ஏப்ரல் 25: வியக்கத்தக்க மனிதர்களாய்

நற்செய்தியாளர் புனித மாற்கு திருவிழா  

இன்று நாம் தியானிக்கும் நற்செய்தி பகுதியை நான் படிக்கும்போதெல்லாம் மறக்க முடியாத நினைவு ஒன்று உண்டு... பல ஆண்டுகளுக்கு முன்னாள் நடந்த ஒரு நிகழ்வு... என் உறவினர்களில் ஒரு சிறுவனுக்கு இன்றைய நற்செய்தி பகுதியை பற்றி விளக்கிக்கொண்டிருந்தேன். நம்பிக்கை கொண்டோரை பற்றி கிறிஸ்து கூறும் பண்புகளை கூறிக்கொண்டிருந்தேன் ... சீரும் பாம்பை கையில் எடுப்பார்கள், நஞ்சை உண்டாலும் அசையாது நிற்பார்கள், பேய்களை ஓட்டுவார்கள்... அவன் சற்று நிமிர்ந்து என்னை பார்த்தான். கண்கள் விரிய ஒரே கேள்வியில் விளக்கத்தை நிறைவு செய்தான்: "அப்படியானால் நாம் எல்லாம் சக்திமானா?" (சக்திமான் - அந்த நாட்களில் தொலைக்காட்சியில் பிரபலமாய் இருந்த குழந்தைகள் தொடர் அது. சிலருக்கு நினைவிருக்க கூடும்.) 

ஆம் அப்படிப்பட்ட சக்திமான்களாய், வியக்கத்தக்க மனிதர்களாய் வாழவே நாம் அழைப்பு பெற்றுள்ளோம். ஏனெனில் நமக்கு அருளப்பட்டிருக்கும் ஆவியோ கோழையுள்ளத்தை கொண்ட ஆவியல்ல, வல்லமையும் அன்பும் கட்டுப்பாடும் கொண்ட ஆவி! நமது வாழ்வை கண்டு இந்த உலகம் வியந்து நிற்க வேண்டும், எள்ளி நகைக்க கூடாது. 

இப்படிப்பட்ட வியக்கத்தக்க குணங்கள் இருப்பினும் தாழ்ச்சியோடும் பணிவோடும் நற்சான்றோடு வாழ நம்மை அழைக்கிறது இன்றைய திருவிழா...ஏனெனில் இப்படிப்பட்ட வியக்கத்தக்க கூட்டத்தில் தான் சிறுவனாய் இளைஞனாய் இருந்த மாற்கு இணைகின்றார்... அவரது திருவிழாவையே நாம் இன்று கொண்டாடுகின்றோம். 

பேதுருவிடமிருந்தும், பவுலிடமிருந்தும் கேட்டறிந்த தரவுகளை வைத்து தனது நற்செய்தியை எழுதும் மாற்குவின் சித்தரிப்பில் கிறிஸ்துவின் உண்மை மனித தன்மை அழகாய் வெளிப்படுகிறது. அன்பும், கனிவும், புரிந்துணர்வும், எளிமையும் நிறைந்த ஒரு கிறிஸ்துவை நாம் இந்நற்செய்தி வழியாய் அறிகின்றோம்... அப்படியே நாமும் நமது வியக்கத்தக்க அழைப்பை உணர்ந்தவர்களாக அதே சமயம் அன்பும் கனிவும் புரிந்துணர்வும் நிறைந்தவர்களாக வாழ முற்படுவோம்.

Superhuman but simply human!
25th April, 2018: Feast of St. Mark, the Evangelist 
1 Pet 5: 5b-14; Mk 16: 15-20

I cannot forget an experience that I had a few years ago, once I was trying to explain today's Gospel reading to one of the tiny tots in the family. After I had explained all that Jesus had said about picking up the serpent and drinking the deadly potion and fighting the demon... the boy just looked at me and asked : so all of us are Shaktimaan? (Shaktimaan was one of those superhuman cartoon characters those days in India).

The readings today remind us of the superhuman call that we have all received! We are given the Spirit that is the Spirit of courage, power and self control and the way we live has to be tremendous to the world which looks on. If only we realise the freedom, the love and the hope that is confered on us by God, by our Saviour and by the indwelling Spirit, we would marvel at ourselves and the blessings we are endowed with!

In spite of those superhuman qualities, we are called to be humble and loving, compassionate and kind. That makes the powers given to us more efficacious, just like the Lord whom we mirror in our own selves. 

Mark a simple young boy joined the band of these superhumans and today we celebrate him. In his Gospel, which he writes from the preachings that he heard primarily from Peter and Paul, of course, we see that human Jesus so beautifully manifested - in his compassion, simplicity and down to earth living. Just as this simple young boy, let's join the band too... proclaiming in our own way everyday the Gospel of love and hope, compassion and understanding.

Ways to belong to the Flock: Find the hand of God

4th week in Eastertide: 24th April, 2018
Acts 11: 19-26; Jn 10: 22-30

The hand of God was with them, we read in the first reading today. And Jesus says in the Gospel that no one can take his sheep away from his hand or from his Father's hand! The hand of God is that which gives us protection in times of trials and victory in times of struggle. The Word invites us to live with the confidence that the hand of God is always with us. 

Very easily we hear people say, what is the use of being with the Lord...I am facing so many problems? Or others who say, is this how I am repaid for my faithfulness to God? As a Church or as individual persons of God, we cannot be lost in a moment of crisis. The moments of difficulty has to strengthen us further. My sheep will never be lost; they know me and listen to me, says Jesus.

When we embark upon a journey that is in keeping with the will of God, when we take up projects that glorify the name of God, and when we start the good things that we are upto in the name of God, we are called to count on the hand of God. And not just then, but very specificall along that journey when situations turn trying and difficult, we are called to hold firm to the hand of God.

We see great feats achieved by people that transform the world and enhance humanity, they are done with the hand of God. When selfishness and self glory dominates, the great things may happen but its efficacy will not last long! As St. Paul would say, "whether we eat or drink, or whatever we do, let us do everything for the glory of God" (cf. 1 Cor 10:31). Then we will dare to count on the hand of God!

ஏப்ரல் 24: அவரது மக்களாக சில வழிகள்

2. அவரது கைவன்மையை காணுங்கள் 

ஆண்டவரின் கைவன்மையை அவர்கள் பெற்றிருந்தார்கள், என்று திருத்தூதர் பணி இறைவனின் மக்களை குறித்து நமக்கு கூறுகிறது. கிறிஸ்துவோ, தன் மந்தையை சேர்ந்தவர்கள் தன்னை அறிந்திருப்பார்கள், தன் கையிலிருந்து அவர்களை யாரும் பறித்துக்கொள்ள இயலாது என்று கூறுகிறார். நமது ஆபத்தான வேளைகளிலோ, இருள் சூழ்ந்த பொழுதுகளிலோ, இறைவனின் கைவன்மை, அவரது பாதுகாக்கும் கரம் நம்மோடு இருப்பதை நாம் உணரவேண்டும்.

கடவுளோடு இருந்து என்ன பயன், என் வாழ்வில் ஏன் இத்தனை துன்பங்கள்? அவருக்கு உண்மையுள்ளவனாய் உள்ளவளாய் இருந்ததற்கு அவர் தரும் வெகுமதி இது தானா, இது ஏன் எனக்கு நிகழ வேண்டும்? என்றெல்லாம் கேள்வி கேட்போரை எவ்வளவு எளிதாக காணமுடிகிறது... உண்மையிலேயே நாம் அவரது மந்தையை சார்ந்தவர்கள் என்றால் எந்த நேரத்திலும் நாம் அவரது கைவன்மையை காண தவற கூடாது. 

இக்கட்டான நேரத்திலும், இருள் சூழும் பள்ளத்தாக்கிலும், இறப்பின் வேளையிலும் கூட அவரது கைவன்மை நம்மை சூழ்ந்தபடியே உள்ளது என்பதை நாம் உணரவேண்டும் - அப்போது மட்டுமே நாம் அவரது மந்தையின் மக்களாகிறோம், அவரது மக்களாகிறோம்!

Monday, 4th week in Eastertide
23rd April, 2018: Acts 11: 1-8; Jn 10: 11-18

The Son of God decided that he will lay his life down for us, for the entire humanity, for every one whom God has created in God's own image and likeness! 

We have just celebrated the Shepherd Sunday: and this week the Word begins to speak to us of the Ways to belong to that Flock, to God's flock. And the first of it is to accept everyone, absolutely everyone, without discrimination!

Can anyone segregate some, on the basis of whatever be the reason, and speak in terms of one being excluded from God's purview, or in terms of being more acceptable or less acceptable in the eyes of God than the others...who can hinder God from loving God's own children and from showing them God's mercy? 

Any logic of seclusion, segregation, stratification...think of them in our context: churches closed in the name of caste, churches divided in the name of language, churches still working on the logic of rich and poor, haves and have nots, powerful and the ordinary...can these define the flock of the Lord?

There is nothing that can hinder us from belonging to the flock of the Lord...there is nothing that can hinder God showering God's love an care on us - only one thing can hinder us: our choices, our personal choices for or against God and belonging to God. Condemnation, Discrimination, Condescension - are all mindsets that are un-Christian. Obedience, Surrender and loving submission to God are traits of a child of God! 

ஏப்ரல் 23: அவரது மக்களாக சில வழிகள்

1. அனைவரையும் ஒன்றென கருதுங்கள் 

நமக்காக தன்  உயிரையே தர முன்வந்தார் இறைமகன்: யாருக்காக? நமக்காக... ஒருசிலருக்காக அல்ல... நம் அனைவருக்காக. 

இறைவனை நல்லாயனாய் கொண்டாடிய ஞாயிறை தொடர்ந்து வரும் இந்த வாரத்திலே... இந்த ஒரே ஆயனின் மந்தைகளாக, ஒரே இறைவனின் மக்களாக நமக்கு ஒரு சில நிபந்தனைகளை முன் வைக்கிறது இறைவார்த்தை... நம் அனைவருக்காக இறைமகன் மரித்தார் என்பதை நாம் முதலில் ஏற்க வேண்டும்... ஏற்றுவிட்டோமே என்று நினைக்காதீர்கள்...

எல்லா இறைசமூகங்களும் ஏற்று விட்டனவா? இறைவனின் மகன் மகள் என பெயர் கூறி கொள்ளும் அனைவரும் ஏற்றுவிட்டோமா? சாதியின் பெயரால் மூடி கிடக்கும் ஆலயங்கள், மொழியின் பெயரால் பிரிந்து கிடக்கும் இறைசமூகங்கள், இன்னும் உயர்ந்தவர் தாழ்ந்தவர் என்ற பாகுபாடுகளோடே  சென்றுகொண்டிருக்கும் பங்குகள், பணம்பெற்றவர்கள் இல்லாதவர்கள், பதவியில் இருப்பவர்கள் சாதாரணமானவர்கள், பெரும் புள்ளிகள் சாமானியர்கள்... என்றெல்லாம் நமக்குள்ளே இன்னும் எண்ணங்கள் இருக்கின்றனவா இல்லையா? 

அவ்வாறு இருந்தால் நாம் இன்னும் அந்த ஒரே ஆயனின் மந்தையாக மாறவில்லை என்று பொருள்... ஒரே இறைவனின் மக்களாக நாம் மாறவேண்டும் என்றால், அனைவரையும் ஒன்றென கருதும் மனப்பான்மை நம்மில் வளரவேண்டும். 

அனைவரையும் சகோதர சகோதரிகளாக காணாத ஒருவர், ஒரே தந்தையும் தாயுமான இறைவனின் மகனாய் மகளாய் மாற முடியாது... நிறை வாழ்வு பெற இயலாது... நாம் நிறைவாழ்வு பெறவே கிறிஸ்து வந்தார் என்பதை உணர்வோம், அனைவரையும் ஒன்றென ஏற்போம்.

Saves, Summons and Sends...

4TH SUNDAY OF EASTER 

22nd APRIL 2018: THE SHEPHERD SUNDAY
Acts 4: 8-12; 1 Jn 3:1-2; Jn 10:11-18

Imagine it in real: can sheep become the shepherd? Sheep are sheep, and the Shepherd is a human being - thinks, plans, acts, helps and serves! Can sheep truly become shepherd? That is what the Lord invites us to... that is what our Shepherd invites us to... from Sheep to become Shepherd! And with God nothing is impossible!

The Fourth Sunday of Easter is celebrated as the Shepherd Sunday and in the Universal Church, this day is suggested to be celebrated as Vocation Sunday - just to remind us of the transformation that we are called to in our life. 

Here is our Shepherd... who Saves us, Summons us  and Sends us...

He saved us... ready to give up his life, ready to totally surrender himself to God, his Father! We have been saved, when blood of the lamb was strewn the wood that was planted between the heaven and the earth. The sheep had already become the Shepherd, laying his life down for the Sheep...that is our Shepherd, identified by the Father himself and given to us, for our salvation! Do we recognise and acknowledge what the Shepherd has really done for us?

He summons us... the Shepherd summons us, that we come to him and be saved, he bids us that we may come to him drink from his life giving streams, he invites us that we may come to him and become the children of God, yes that is what we are made by that sacrifice and our belief in that sacrifice: for to those who believed in him and accepted him, he gave the power to become children of God (Jn 1:12). In our daily life and situations, do we hear this call coming to us constantly to make a difference wherever we are, to tell ourselves and the world that we are truly children of God, the sheep of the Shepherd who made such a huge difference in and through his life?

He sends us... the Shepherd sends us on a mission, to announce the name of this Shepherd, the name in which everyone shall be saved, summoned and be sent! We do not announce the name of an emperor or a dictator, we announce the name of a Shepherd - who reaches out to serve, save and give life. Yes, we are sent.. sent on a mission, sent to be shepherds - in our families shepherds to each other; in our society shepherds to the weak, in our faith community shepherds to the children of God. Are we truly, shepherds after the heart of that One True Shepherd?

We fall in line with this Shepherd only in as much as we accept that salvation that comes from the Shepherd, respond to the summon and be ready to be sent in our daily life, to be shepherds after the heart of that Shepherd, our Shepherd, my Shepherd!

இதோ என் ஆயன்...

அணைக்கும், அழைக்கும், அனுப்பும் ஆயன்

ஏப்ரல் 22 - நல்லாயன்  ஞாயிறு 

பாஸ்கா காலத்தின் நான்காம் ஞாயிறு நல்லாயன் ஞாயிறாக கொண்டாடப்படுகிறது... இன்றைய தினம் உலக திருச்சபையிலே இறையழைத்தலின் ஞாயிறாக தியானிக்கப்பட வேண்டுமென திருச்சபை கருதுகிறது. 

நம் ஆயன் நம்மை அணைக்கிறார்... தேடி வந்து, தூக்கியணைத்து, மன்னித்து நம்மை மீட்கிறார்; தன உயிரையே கொடுத்து மீட்கிறார் (நற்செய்தி யோ 10:11-18).

நம் ஆயன் நம்மை அழைக்கிறார்... அவரது ஆடுகளாய் மட்டுமல்ல, அவரை போலவே ஆயர்களாய் மாற... நம்மை அழைக்கிறார். ஆனால் அவரது ஆடுகளாய் முதலில் மாறாமல் நாம் ஆயர்களாய் மாறமுடியாது என்பதால் முதலில் அவரை ஏற்று இறைவனின் பிள்ளைகளாய் மாற நம்மை அழைக்கிறார் (1 யோ 3:1-2). 

நம் ஆயன் நம்மை அனுப்புகிறார்...நம் அன்றாட வாழ்வில் ஆயர்களாய்....நம் குடும்பத்திலே, சமூகத்திலே, உறவுகளிலே ஆயர்களாய், அழைக்கப்பட்டவர்களாய், அவரது பெயரிலே அனைவருக்கு நற்செய்தி அறிவிக்க அனுப்புகிறார் (தி.ப 4:8-12).

Am I with Jesus?

Saturday, 3rd week in Eastertide

21st April, 2018: Acts 9: 31-42; Jn 6: 60-69

Peter is the hero today in the Word...when many were leaving Jesus one by one, there were just the select few who remained with Jesus and Peter was the leader among them. Even later when Jesus was taken to suffer, Peter in spite of his weakness, never wished to leave Jesus. He gives a fabulous reason today: to whom shall we go, you have the Words of eternal life! This is why Peter could do all that we hear him do in the Acts!

Staying with Christ is the criterion to being like Christ. Whatever Christ did Peter did: Jesus said to the crippled, get up, pick up your mat and walk and Peter says the same today to Aeneas; Jesus said Talithacum...that is Rise little child and that is what Peter says today to Tabitha - to rise! Peter did all that Jesus did - it was possible because, Peter decided to Stay with Jesus!

When we stay with Jesus, we naturally become good to others, reach out to others, love others, free others, empower others, encourage others, affirm others, appreciate others, give life to others! Enough to stay with Jesus from the depth of our hearts, all that we do will be life giving..because Jesus said: one who believes in me will do all that I did and more than that.

When we are not with Jesus, we may think we are doing good, we are doing great things... but the sad fact would be we are not life giving, we are not affirming others and we are not empowering others but in all that we do, we are only desperately trying to blow our own ego, gain power for ourselves, become popular for our own sake and try to fend for ourselves!

It is crucial therefore dear friend, to ask ourselves: Am I  with Jesus?

ஏப்ரல் 21: இயேசுவோடே...

அவரோடே வாழ்வோம், அவராகவே வாழ்வோம். 

இன்றைய இறைவார்த்தையில் விஞ்சி நிற்பவர் - பேதுரு! பலரும் இயேசுவை விட்டு விலகி சென்றபோது  ஒரு சிலர் மட்டுமே அவரோடு தங்கினர்... அவர்களில் பேதுருவே தலைவராக நிற்கிறார். கிறிஸ்து கைதாகி துன்புற நேர்ந்தபோதும் கூட, அவரது இயலாமையையும் தாண்டி கிறிஸ்துவோடே இருக்க வேண்டும் என்று துடித்தவர் பேதுரு. அதற்கு இன்று தலையாயதொரு காரணத்தையும் தருகிறார்: யாரிடம் செல்வோம் இறைவா... வாழ்வு தரும் வார்த்தைகள் உம்மிடம் அன்றோ உள்ளன! 

கிறிஸ்துவோடே தங்குதல் என்பது அவரை போல் வாழ்வதற்கான ஒரு அடிப்படை தேவையாகும். அவரை போன்றே அனைத்தையும் செய்தார் பேதுரு... முடமானவரை கண்டு எழுந்து நட என்றதும், தபிதாவை பார்த்து எழுந்திரு என்றதும், கிறிஸ்து செய்த அதே செயல்கள் என்பதை நாம் அறிவோம்...இது அவரால் முடிந்தது ஏனெனில், அவர் இயேசுவோடே வாழ்ந்தார். 

நாமும் இயேசுவோடே வாழும் போது அவரைப்போலவே பிறருக்கு உயிரூட்டுபவர்களாய், ஊக்கமூட்டுபவர்களாய், உடனிருப்பவர்களாய், நன்மை புரிபவர்களாய், கைகொடுப்பவர்களாய், வாழுவோம். நாம் செய்யும் அனைத்தும் அடுத்தவருக்கு வாழ்வளிப்பதாய் மாறும். ஆனால் அவரோடு நாம் இல்லையெனின் நாம் செய்யும் அனைத்தும் நன்மையாகவே இருப்பினும், அது நமது சுயநலத்திற்காகவும், நமது நற்பெயருக்காகவும், நமது பெயர் பரவுவதற்காகவும், நம்மையே நாம் முன்னிறுத்துவதற்காகவும் மட்டுமே பயன்படும்.

நாம் செய்யும் அனைத்திலும், நாம் சிந்திக்கும் அனைத்திலும் நம்மையே நாம் கேட்டுக்கொள்ள வேண்டிய கேள்வி ஒன்று உள்ளது: நான் இயேசுவோடே இருக்கிறேனா?
