Grow or Get Stuck!

Monday, 9th week in Ordinary Time

2 Pet 1:2-7; Mk 12:1-12

If you are truly a son or a daughter of God, Grow Up, says Jesus! If you do not grow up you get stuck! 

We see Jesus trying his best to challenge the Jews who are stuck to their childish obstinacy and blind legalism. They are not able to grow up to see the truth that is so obvious right in front of their eyes! At times, we may be in that state too - not that we do not understand what God wants from us, but we refuse to understand, we refuse to see, we refuse to grow up, getting stuck to what we wish and what we are convenient with. 

Peter today suggests to us eight stages of Growth, like ingredients to add, as we make of ourselves truly Persons of God. The itinerary is clear, yet difficult; well laid out yet challenging. Here are the eight: Faith, with which we begin our journey with the Lord; Goodness with which we show to ourselves and to the world the faith we have within us; Understanding with which we come to realise what is expected of us at a given instance in our lives; Self Control which helps us go beyond our wish and desire to see what is right and what is true; Patience with which we endure the struggles involved in choosing what is right; Devotion with which we do not mind any amount of suffering or struggle for the sake of the One who shows us what is right; Kindness with which we bear witness to the One to whom we are devoted; and finally, Love which is the very nature and form of the one whom we wish to reach in this life-journey!

In short, our life is one long journey. As the year passes by, just as seasons progress, we are called to keep moving, keep growing!

ஜூன் 4: வளர்ந்திடுவோம்...

வளர்ச்சியே வாழ்வின் அறிகுறி 

2 பேதுரு 1:2-7; மாற் 12:1-12

உண்மையிலே இறைத்தன்மையுடையவரானால், வளர்ந்திடுங்கள் - என்று சவால்  விடுகிறார் கிறிஸ்து. வளராவிட்டால் வாழ்வின் அறிகுறியே அற்றுப்போகும். 

தங்கள் கண்முன்பாக நடந்துகொண்டிருந்த அனைத்தையும் கண்டும் இறைவனை அறிந்துகொள்ளாது இருந்தனர் கிறிஸ்துவின் காலத்து மக்கள். அவர்களுக்கு உண்மையை உணர்த்த கிறிஸ்து படாத பாடு படுகிறார் என்றே சொல்லலாம் - அவர்களுக்கு புரியாமலில்லை, அவர்கள் புரிந்துகொள்ள விரும்பவில்லை; அவர்களுக்கு தெரியாமலில்லை அதை உணர்ந்துகொள்ள அவர்களுக்கு மனது இல்லை. இதையே கிறிஸ்து சாடுகிறார்.

அவ்வாறு இல்லாமல் நம் வாழ்விலே இறைத்தன்மை என்பதை புரிந்துகொண்டு வாழ, வளர பேதுரு நமக்கு ஒரு படிநிலை திட்டத்தை வகுத்து கொடுக்கிறார். இந்த திட்டம் எட்டு படிகளை கொண்டுள்ளது - எளிமையானது ஆனால் சவால் மிக்கது; தெளிவாய் புரியக்கூடியது ஆனால் கடினமானது. 

முதல் படி நம்பிக்கை - இதுவே இறைவனோடு நமது பயணத்தின் தொடக்கப்புள்ளி. இரண்டாவது, நற்பண்பு - இதன் மூலமே நமக்குள் குடிகொண்டுள்ள நம்பிக்கையை நாம் வெளிக்காட்ட முடியும். மூன்றாவது, அறிவு - இதுவே நம்மிடமிருந்து என்ன எதிர்பார்க்கப்படுகிறது என்பதை நாம் உணர்ந்து செயல்பட நமக்கு உதவுகிறது. நான்காவது, தன்னடக்கம் - நம் விருப்பு வெறுப்புக்கள், ஆசாபாசங்கள் அனைத்தையும் தாண்டி உண்மையையும், சரியானதையும் தேர்ந்துகொள்ள நமக்கு உதவுவது இதுவே. ஐந்தாவது, மனவுறுதி, உண்மையானதையும் சரியானதையும் தேர்ந்துகொள்ளும்போது ஏற்படும் இன்னல்களையும் இடறல்களையும் தாங்கும் ஆற்றலை தருவது இதுவே. ஆறாவது, இறைப்பற்று - இதுவே அனைத்து இன்னல்களையும் பொறுத்துக்கொண்டு சரியானதை இறைவனுக்காக தேர்ந்துகொள்ளும் மனதை நமக்கு தருகிறது. ஏழாவது சகோதர நேயம் - நாம் யாருக்காக யாரோடு பயணிக்கிறோம் என்பதை சாட்சியமாய் வெளிப்படுத்துவது இதுவே. இறுதியாக, அன்பு - நம்மை அழைத்தவரின் இயல்பும், உருவும் இதுவே!

சுருங்கக்கூறின், நமது வாழ்வு என்பது ஒரு பயணம், ஒரு வளர்ச்சி... ஆண்டின் காலங்கள் மாறி உரிய காலத்தில் உரிய மாற்றங்கள் ஏற்படுவதை போல நமது வாழ்விலும் வளர்ச்சி காணப்பட வேண்டும். இல்லையேல் நமது வாழ்வே கேள்விக்குறியாகிவிடும். வாழ்வோம், வளர்வோம்!

WITH US, IN US AND FOR US

Covenantal Presence, Corporal Union and Concrete Commitment 

The Solemnity of Corpus Christi: 2nd June, 2018

Exo 24:3-8; Heb 9: 11-15; Mk 14: 12-16, 22-26

The Feast of Corpus Christi reminds us of a drastic decision that God made in our favour -  With Us, In Us and For Us - God loved us, God came amidst us and God came to stay within us! The solemnity that we celebrate today explicates this decision inspiring in us a similar attitude as we live our daily life.

WITH US: That decision to stay with us is a Covenantal Presence... As St. Paul writes to Timothy, even if we are unfaithful, God is faithful forever. God has made a covenant with us throughout the ages, and finally God had sealed it and convalidated it wtih the very body and blood of God's Son, and that covenant is, to be with us forever! The Covenantal Presence of God with us is the highest form of security and protection that we can feel. It gives us the sense of sonship and daughterhood. The call here is to be WITH OTHERS, specially when someone suffers, struggles, grapples and fights to live meaningfully.

IN US: The decision to stay with us is a desire for Corporal Union... Our Lord and Saviour becomes one with us, unites in our bodily existence too, enabling us to say, It is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me. It is a decision to be in us forever. It is a decision to purify us from within us, it is a decision to infuse sanctity within us, it is a decision to make us whole from within. The call here is to be IN THE LIVES OF THE OTHERS. Just like the Son of God becomes one with us, we are called to empathise with others with whom we share this common home: the World. It is crucial with whom we side: with those who really need empowerment or with the dominant rows.

FOR US: The decision to stay with us is a Concrete Commitment that the Lord take on our behalf; that we may be saved, sanctified and brought back to God. It is a call that Christ gives us to offer ourselves entirely to God, in every thing we are and everything we do. This is my body; this is my blood which shall be shed for you, says the Lord. It is a concrete commitment the Lord makes to be forever for us. And the call is obvious: to GIVE OF OURSELVES FOR THE OTHERS. A truly Christian life is a life that is lived for Others, for it is in living for others that we live for God. The Others here would begin from one's one immediate family, the faith community, the universal brothers and sisters, specially those who are weak and oppressed. 

The Body and Blood of Christ that we celebrate is a living reminder of the extraordinary love that God has to be WITH us, IN us and FOR us! Let us heed the invitation and become persons with others, in others, for others!

Stewards Affire...

Friday, 8th week in Ordinary Time

1st June, 2018: 1 Pet 4: 7-13; Mk 11: 11-26 

We are given with gifts, and every gift comes with a responsibility. The right mentality of using those gifts is not exactly "like a boss" as the trend among the young says today, but as a servant, as stewards who are entrusted with special responsibilities to be carried out. We are given our life and everything in it as a gift and we are given with it for a purpose. Our life in a particular place and time and history is for a particular purpose! 

The Word reminds us today to understand our call, the purpose and live it to the full. We are called not to be mere servants, or lifeless stewards, but to be stewards affire! To be stewards who are full of fire to live our life to the full, accomplish what God has willed and do it with an unquenchable passion.

The more we are convinced of our purposefulness and the more we are able to give ourselves to the full to God's purposes, the more shall we be in a position to challenge others and remind them of their responsibility. Jesus dared to challenge them because he was integral himself, he was convinced that he was God's steward and he lived that out to the full, affire within! 

மே 31: கடவுள் நம்மோடு, நம்மில்... நாமாய்!

மரியாள் எலிசபெத்தம்மாளை சந்தித்த திருவிழா 

செப் 3: 14-18a; லூக் 1: 39-56

மரியன்னை எலிசபெத்தம்மாளை சந்தித்த திருவிழாவை நாம் இன்று நினைவு கூறுகிறோம். இந்த சந்திப்பு மிக ஆழமான கிறிஸ்தவ பாடங்களை நமக்கு கற்பிக்க கூடும். மரியன்னை எலிசபெத்தம்மாளின் வீட்டிற்குள் நுழைந்த போது இறைபிரசன்னம் உணரப்பட்டது. அதற்கு இரண்டு காரணங்கள் இருந்தன: ஒன்று, மரியாள் இறைமகனை தன் வயிற்றில் சுமந்துகொண்டிருந்தார். இரண்டு, மரியன்னையே அங்கு சுற்றியிருந்தவர்களுக்கு இறைபிரசன்னமாய் மாறினார்!

இன்றைய முதல் வாசகம் இறைவன் நமது மத்தியில் இருக்கிறார் என்றும், நம்மில் களிகூருகிறார் என்றும், நம்மை புதுப்பிக்கிறார் என்றும், நம்மை குறித்து மகிழ்ந்து ஆடி பாடுகிறார் என்றும் கூறுகிறது! நம்மில் களிகூரும் எவரும், நமது மகிழ்ச்சியில் மகிழும் எவரும், நம்மில் அக்கறை கொண்டு நம்மை புதுப்பிக்கும், திருத்தும் எவரும், அடுத்தவரை குறித்து மகிழ்ந்து ஆடிப்பாடும் எவரும் இறைவனின் பிரசன்னத்தை உணரச்செய்கிறார்கள் என்பதை மிக அழகாக விளக்குகிறது இவ்வாசகம். 

மரியன்னையை நோக்கி, என் ஆண்டவரின் தாய் என்னிடம் வர நான் என்ன தவம் செய்தேன் என்று வியக்கும் எலிசபெத்தம்மாள், மரியன்னைக்கு அவரிடம் குடிக்கொண்டுள்ள இறைவனின் பிரசன்னத்தை நினைவுறுத்துபவராக மாறுகிறார். என் ஆன்மா இறைவனை ஏற்றி போற்றுகின்றது என்று எலிசபெத்தை கண்டு இறைவனுக்கு மாட்சிப்பாடும் மரியன்னையோ எலிசபெத்தம்மாளுக்கும் அவ்வில்லத்தை சார்ந்த அனைவருக்கும் இறைவனின் பிரசன்னத்தின் அறிகுறியாகிறார். 

இறைவனின் பிரசன்னத்தை உணர்ந்தவர்களாக, உணர்த்துபவர்களாக... கடவுள் நம்மோடு நம்மில் வாழ்கிறார்... கடவுளே நாமாய் வெளிப்படுகிறார் என்று உணர்ந்து வாழ நாம் அழைக்கப்படுகிறோம்... உணர்வோம், வாழ்வோம்!

God in the midst of us!

31st May, 2018: Feast of Visitation

Zeph 3: 14-18a; Lk 1: 39-56

We celebrate the feast of the Visitation of our Blessed Mother to Elizabeth. When Mary entered Elizabeth's household, there was a sense of God that was felt, for two reasons. The first, Mary was carrying Jesus within her and the effect was felt! The second, Mary herself was transformed into the presence of God for Elizabeth! 

The first reading today turns our attention to the words of Zephaniah explaining what the Lord in our midst is doing: God exults, God renews and God dances! God exults in the wonderful gifts that we are to Godself. God renews those parts of us that are not as good as they can be! God dances with joy over everything that we are able to do in God's eternal plan. Anyone who expresses this exultation of the Lord, this call for renewal and the rejoicing of the Lord in God's children, is a reminder of the presence of God.

Infact when Elizabeth says, 'what have I done to deserve that the Mother of my Lord should visit me!', she becomes the reminder of the presence of God to Mary! When Mary turns to Elizabeth and says, 'My heart exults in the Lord and my soul rejoices in God my saviour', she becomes the reminder of the Lord's presence to Elizabeth and to the entire household!

We are called to be reminders of the presence of God, to be the presences of God to those around us. When we exult in the Lord, when we do our part to renew those around us, correcting them with care and love, when we rejoice in the goodness of others and the good things that happen to them, we become God's presence amidst God's people!

Can we be today, God's presences wherever we are!

Wednesday, 8th week in Ordinary Time

30th May, 2018: 1 Peter 1: 18-25; Mk 10: 32-45

A tree is known from its fruits, the Word would remind us! The Word today speaks of a similar reality. It presents to us two crops of people: one an old crop and the other a new crop, a newly born community of persons, born anew in the blood of Christ. The seed of the latter crop is the very blood of Christ! The Question is: which crop do I belong?

Jesus presents to us both the contrasting mentalities, the popular mentality of dominance and control and the Jesus mentality of service and collaboration; the popular mentality of judgment and categorisation and the Jesus' mentality of compassion and understanding; the popular mentality of division and superiority and the Jesus' mentality of communion and solidarity! 

One will not fit in the other for they two are contrasting mentalities and the Lord wants us to make a choice and make it known! Jesus is preparing his disciples today in the Gospel, to be a crop of the latter kind. Of course, he finds it tough but he does not mind it and he will never compromise on it. 

The same he expects from us - that we grow to bear fruits, fruits belonging to the crop of Christ himself! We better become aware, to which crop we belong and we better check our seed!

மே 30: உனது விதை?

உனது வெளிப்பாடுகளே உனது விதையை வெளிப்படுத்தும். 

1 பேதுரு 1: 18-25; மாற் 10: 32-45

ஒரு மரம் அதன் கனிகளிலிருந்து அறியப்படுகிறது என்கிறது இறைவார்த்தை. இன்றைய இறைவார்த்தையும் அப்படிப்பட்ட ஒரு உண்மையை தான் நமக்கு முன்னிறுத்துகிறது. கிறிஸ்து இன்று இரண்டு வகையான மக்களை குறித்து நம்மிடம் பேசுகிறார்... ஒன்று உலகப்பாங்கான ஒரு வகை மக்கள், மற்றொன்று கிறிஸ்துவின் மனநிலையை கொண்ட மக்கள் - இந்த இரண்டாம் வகையினர், கிறிஸ்துவின் இரத்தத்தினாலே பிறந்தவர்கள் என்று முதல் வாசகம் நமக்கு விளக்குகிறது. இவர்களது விதை கிறிஸ்துவின் இரத்தமே!

இந்த இரண்டு வகையினரையும் நமக்கு நினைவுறுத்துகிறார் கிறிஸ்து - ஆட்சியையும் அதிகாரமும்வேண்டுவோர் ஒருவகை, அன்பும் சேவையும் கருதுவோர் மறுவகை; தீர்ப்பிடுதலையும் தங்கள் விருப்பத்தை திணிப்பதையும் விரும்புவோர் ஒருவகை, புரிதலையும் அடுத்தவரின் உணர்வை மதித்தலையும் முன்னிறுத்துவோர் மறுவகை; பிரிவினையும் ஏற்றத்தாழ்வும் பாராட்டுவோர் ஒருவகை, சமத்துவத்தையும் ஒருமைப்பாட்டையும் முன்னெடுப்போர் மறுவகை. 

ஒன்றிற்கு ஒன்று ஒவ்வாதவை இவை. இதில் எந்த மனநிலை எண்ணில் மேலோங்கியுள்ளது என்று சிந்தித்து தெளிய அழைக்கிறது இன்றைய வார்த்தை. இதில் இரண்டாம் வகையினராக தன்  சீடர்கள் இருக்கவேண்டும் என்று விழைகிறார் கிறிஸ்து. அவர்களுக்கு அதை தொடர்ந்து அறிவுறுத்தியும் வருகிறார்... அவர்களோ அதை புரிந்துகொள்வதாய் இல்லை. ஆனால் அவர் தன் நிலைப்பாட்டிலிருந்து பின்வாங்க போவதில்லை... தான் மறித்தாவது அவர்கள் அந்த வேறுபாட்டை உணர்ந்துவிட வேண்டும் என்று தொடர்ந்து போராடுகிறார். 

நம்மையும் அதே நிலைபாட்டிற்கே அழைக்கிறார்... கிறிஸ்துவின் மனநிலையை நாம் கொண்டிருக்க வேண்டும் என்றால், அவரது இரத்தத்தினால் பிறந்தவர்களாக நாம் மாறவேண்டும், வளரவேண்டும். அன்பு சகோதரமே... உனது நிலைப்பாடு என்ன? கிறிஸ்துவின் இரத்தமே உனது விதையா?

The choice to be Holy

Tuesday, 8th week in Ordinary Time

29th May, 2018: 1 Pet 1:10-16; Mk 10: 28-31

From yesterday's call to prove our mettle fitting the Reign, follows today's call to remain holy! Holiness is not merely an act, but an attitude; it is not doing a few things in a manner that is considered popularly to be holy, but living our life, every moment of it, in a manner that is Godly. 

We are called to be holy because the one who has called us is Holy, reminds St. Peter today, resounding the call given in the book of Leviticus. When we decide for ourselves and choose to embark upon a sincere journey of holiness, Jesus promises us beautiful things - things that make us secure, persons who love and admire us, protection of God almighty that would guide us - but along with this, persecution... and ofcourse eternal life, of which we partake already by virtue of our Baptism! 

Hence, the choice is ours: to choose God, remain in God and persevere through all trials or to give up and choose the desires of ignorance, as explained in the first reading, and lose our original identity and the dignity of children of God! 

Salvation is not some magical act that the Lord performs for us, but it is our 'growing into heaven'. It is our daily maturity, by our constant faith, persistent hope and unfailing love - it is our choice for holiness! 

மே 29: தூய்மையுள்ளவர்களாய்...

அவர் தூயவராதலால், நாமும் தூயோராய்.

1 பேதுரு 1:10-16; மாற் 10: 28-31

நாம் அனைவரும் அழைக்கப்பட்டவர்கள்... நாம் தீயினில்  புடமிடப்பட்டவர்களாய் வாழ வேண்டும் ஏனெனில், நாம் அழைக்கப்பட்டவர்கள். நம்மை அழைத்தவர் தூயவராய் இருப்பதனால் நாமும் தூயோராய் வாழ அழைக்கப்பட்டுள்ளோம். தூயோராய் வாழ்வது என்பது ஒரு தேர்வு... நாமாக தெளிந்து தேர்வது. இறைவனை போல் வாழ, அவரது விழுமியங்களுக்கு ஏற்ப வாழ நாமாக தேர்ந்து தெளிவது!

இதை நாமாக தேர்ந்துகொள்ளும் போது நமக்கு கிறிஸ்து பலவற்றை வாக்களிக்கிறார் - நாம் தியாகம் செய்வதை விட நூறு மடங்கு, ஆசீர்வாதம், பிறரிடமிருந்து அன்பு, உறவுகள்... இவற்றோடு இன்னல்களும்கூட... மேலும் மறுமையில் நிலை வாழ்வும்! நமது திருமுழுக்கிலே இந்த அழைப்பை பெற்றுக்கொண்ட நாம், அதே திருமுழுக்கிலே இந்த நிலைவாழ்வையும் பெற்றுக்கொண்டுள்ளோம்! ஆனால், அந்த நிலைவாழ்விற்குள் நாம் படிப்படியாய் வளரவேண்டும். 

நமது அன்றாட வாழ்வு, அதில் நாம் மேற்கொள்ளும் தெரிவுகள், நமது முடிவுகள், நமது முக்கியத்துவங்கள், இவற்றினால் நாம் நமக்கு அளிக்கப்பட்டிருக்கும் நிலைவாழ்விற்குள் படி படியாய் வளரவேண்டும். இதுவே, தூயோராய் வாழ்தல். இறைவனுக்குரியத்தை தேர்ந்துகொள்வதோ, இவ்வுலகத்திற்குரிய மடமையை தேர்ந்துகொள்வதோ, நமது கையில் தான் உள்ளது என்பதை ஆணித்தரமாக கூறுகிறது இன்றைய இறைவார்த்தை... நாம் எதை தேர்ந்துகொள்ளப்போகிறோம்?

அவர் தூயவராதலால், நாமும் தூயோராய் வாழ முடிவெடுப்போம்... சரியான தருணத்தில் சரியான முடிவுகளை எடுத்து அன்றாட வாழ்வில் நாம் தூய்மையுள்ளோராய் வளர்வோம்!
