Do not get lost...

18th Sunday in Ordinary time: 5th August, 2018

Exo 16: 2-4,12-15; Eph 4: 17, 20-24; Jn 6: 24-35

O Christian, realise your dignity: those words of Pope St. Leo the Great is something that pulls up our attention constantly towards living a life that is worthy of the splendour we are invested with. This Sunday's Word brings this back strongly to our minds. We need to remember we are not any kind of beings. Even among the so-called human beings, we have received and we claim to have accepted a revelation, very special and precious. And hence we need to remember that we are people bred for heaven! 

The Word reminds us that we are different and we need to make a difference. We need to feel the presence of the Lord who makes a difference for us! We need to start living that difference in our life, on a daily basis, by showing to the world that our value systems are different, that our priorities are different and that our foundation is different. 

We have an obligation to make a difference, wherever we are! Because we are bred for heaven! Our home is heaven, our origin is God and our destiny is eternal life! We are fed by the bread from heaven and we are bred for heaven! 

We cannot get lost in the world, in the crowd, in the so called normalcy of life. We are warned against three things in which we can possibly get lost:

Do not get lost in things that do not last. 

The world seems to be running crazy behind things that cannot last - possessions and pleasure are ranked the highest in the list of priorities in life today. The sad fact is, after all the running and an eventual achievement there is a disillusionment that follows almost immediately! We lose everything to reach where we cannot stay forever, to achieve things that would not remain with us forever, to have a feeling which would not follow us forever. Jesus gets seemingly upset with the people because they were attaching a disproportionate importance to the gross benefits of following Jesus, losing the actual and the ideal good that Jesus was proposing to them, a different way of life! The only thing that lasts, the Lord says today, is the life that God alone can give, the eternal life. 

Do no get lost with the ways of the crowd.

Do not go on living an aimless kind of life, St. Paul insists in his letter to the Ephesians! Live as people who have seen the Way, the Truth and the Life. See that difference, make that difference and live that difference. Let the world turn around and look at you, don't be following the crowd. Do not conform to the ways of the world (Rom 12:2), Paul would say elsewhere. Be singled out, by your way of life! Be noticed, by your priorities. Be imitable, by the priceless model that you have, Jesus the Lord. Be imitators of me as I am of Christ, said Paul. 

Do not get lost being carried away by the apparent.

Do not go by the external show and the make-belief practices. Do not be carried away by what appears and what is projected - they can mislead you. The people thought Moses gave them the bread from heaven. Jesus had to teach them, it was not Moses but the Father in heaven who gave them the bread and that the same bread had come down in flesh and blood amidst them. They could not see it, because they were fixated with the apparent, with the external, with the outward show. They could not delve deeper and get their faith right. Today we have come a long way, we have seen the revelation of God, the experience of God, the majesty of God...and we cannot get lost in the apparent. 

We are not meant for the passing things and temporal benefits... yes, they are necessary but there is life over and beyond them all. We are truly made for God! We are bred for heaven! Let us never lose sight of it and never stop marching towards it!

The plight of a prophet

Remembering St. John Marie Vianney

August 4, 2018: Jer 26: 1-11,16 ; Mt 14: 1-12

Constant threat to life, drastic insecurities of life, total nonacceptance from the rest of the so called normal people, pressures of helplessness...these form part of the usual plight of a prophet, not just in the days of Jeremiah and John the Baptist but even today. That explains why real prophets are a rare phenomenon. However, it has often occurred to me that, the difference between a true prophet and a self-righteous egoist is very thin and dangerously subtle.

The first element that can demarcate the two is the FOCUS. When Jeremiah spoke to the people and the princes, he never looked for support or people who can come to his defence. His focus was determinantly on what God wanted him to say and nothing else.

The second element is DETACHMENT from the result. Though the message is definitely pointed towards a change, a result,  the prophet is not excessively anxious about it. At times a self righteous person can be on a ego trip claiming credits and proving his point. A true prophet desists this tendency naturally.

The third element is absolute FEARLESSNESS. A fearlessness that makes them hard people to handle for the authorities and the hierarchy. But that fearlessness comes from their unwavering trust, confidence and hope in the never failing presence of the Lord!

We have a saint today who shines as an epitome of these qualities at any point in his life, whether at the moment when he was about to be sent out of the seminary for his dullness of intellect,  or when he was rather dumped into a 'god forsaken' village as they thought, or when the people did not even bother about the new priest at the Church, or when he had just empty pews to preach to, he never gave up!  He was always mindful of the fact that it was the Lord who had called him and sent him to that village. That faith paid off!  That village experienced a revival. He proved a true prophet!

As we resolve today to take the faith perspective of our life seriously,  let us whisper a prayer for every priest whom we know, specially for those who are in some kind of crisis. May Vianney intercede for a revival.

முழுமையான இறைவாக்கினர்களாக...

புனித ஜான் மரிய வியான்னி - நினைவு

ஆகஸ்ட் 4, 2018: எரே  26: 1-11,16 ; மத் 14: 1-12

கொலை மிரட்டல்கள், நிராகரிப்பு, ஏற்றுக்கொள்ளப்படாமை, யாருக்காக அனைத்தையும் செய்கிறோம் என்று நினைக்கிறோமோ அவர்களிடமிருந்தே வெறுப்பு - இவையே ஒரு முழுமையான இறைவாக்கினரின் வாழ்வாகும். எரேமியாவின் காலத்திலும், திருமுழுக்கு யோவானின் காலத்திலும் மட்டுமல்ல, இன்றும் இதுவே உண்மையாக இருப்பதை நாம் காணமுடிகிறது. ஆகையால் தான் உண்மையான முழுமையான இறைவாக்கினர்கள் தோன்றுவது அரிதாகின்றது. எனினும் நம் கவனத்தை ஈர்க்கும் ஒரு உண்மை என்னவென்றால், உண்மை இறைவாக்கினர்களுக்கும், தற்பெருமை சாற்றும் போலி இறையூழியர்களுக்கும் ஒரு மெல்லிய கோடே வேறுபாடாய் என்றும் அமைந்துள்ளது! 

இந்த வேறுபாடுகளில் முதன்மையானது, நோக்கம். எதை நோக்கி நமது சொற்களும் செயல்களும் நகர்கின்றன, மற்றவர்களை நகர்த்துகின்றன என்று நாம் கூர்ந்து கவனிக்க வேண்டியுள்ளது. எரேமியாவோ, யோவானோ, தாங்கள் பேசியபோது இறைவன் விரும்பியதை பேசினார்கள், யாருடைய ஆதரவையோ, அரணையோ அவர்கள் எதிர்பார்க்கவில்லை. 

இரண்டாவதாக, விளைவின் மீது பற்றின்மை. தாங்கள் சொல்வது ஒரு விளைவை, மாற்றத்தை நோக்கி இருந்தாலும், அந்த மாற்றத்தின் அல்லது விளைவின் மீது அவர்கள் எந்த ஒரு பற்றுமின்றி இருந்தார்கள். சில நேரங்களில் இறையடியார்கள் என்று கூறிக்கொள்ளும் சிலர், தங்கள் பெயர், புகழ், நினைவு என்றும் நிலைக்க வேண்டும் என்பதற்காகவே பலவற்றை செய்வதை நாம் கண்டதுண்டு அல்லவா?

மூன்றாம் வேறுபாடு, பயமின்மை. இதுவே அவர்களை பெரும் ஆற்றல் வாய்ந்தவர்களாக மாற்றிவிடுகின்றது. யாருக்கும் எதற்கும் அஞ்சாத, இறைவனுக்கு மட்டுமே கட்டுப்படக்கூடிய மனநிலை என்பது கட்டுக்கடங்காத ஆற்றலை உண்மையிலேயே தரக்கூடிய குணமாகும். இந்த பயமின்மை அவர்களது தனிப்பட்ட துணிச்சலிலிருந்து வருவதல்ல. மாறாக இறைவனின் உடனிருப்பில் அவர்கள் கொண்டுள்ள அசைக்க முடியாத நம்பிக்கையிலிருந்தே பிறக்கிறது.

இம்மூன்று வேறுபாடுகளையும் தன்னகத்தே மிக ஆணித்தரகமாக கொண்ட புனிதர் ஒருவரை நாம் இன்று கொண்டாடுகின்றோம் - புனித ஜான் மரிய வியான்னி! குருவாவதற்கான பயிற்சியின் இடையில் அவரது இயலாமையை காரணம் காட்டி அவரை வெளியேற்ற சிலர் நினைத்த போதும் சரி, யாரும் கேள்விப்படாத குக்கிராமமமான ஆர்ஸ் என்னும் ஊருக்கு அவரை கண்காணா இடத்திற்கு அனுப்புவதாய் நினைத்து அனுப்பிய போதும் சரி, புதிதாய் வந்துள்ள குரு யாரென்று கூட கவலைப்படாத மக்களாய் தன் பங்கு மக்கள் இருந்தபோதும் சரி, யாருமற்ற வெறும் இருக்கைகளுக்கு மறையுரை ஆற்றவேண்டிய நிலை வந்தபோதும் சரி, ஜான் வியான்னி மனமுடையவில்லை, நிலைகுலையவில்லை. அவரது நம்பிக்கை நிலையாயிருந்தது, அந்த ஊரை மட்டுமல்ல, சுற்றியுள்ள அனைத்து மக்களையும் மனமாற்றியது! இதுவே உண்மையான இறைவாக்கினருக்கு அடையாளம்!

அதே நம்பிக்கையோடு வாழமுடிவெடுக்கும் நாம், இன்று நமக்கு தெரிந்த அனைத்து குருவானவர்களுக்காகவும் ஒரு சிறு செபத்தை ஏறெடுப்போம் ... சிறப்பாக பிரச்சனைகளில் இருக்கும் குருவானவர்கள், நம்பிக்கையில் தளர்ந்துள்ள குருவானவர்கள், இடறல்களில் சிக்கியுள்ள குருவானவர்களை இறைப்பதம் சரணாக்கி செபிப்போம்!

Selective Hearing Loss

Friday, 17th week in Ordinary time  

August 3, 2018: Jer 26: 1-9; Mt 13: 54-58

Once, I had accompanied my mother to a hearing test centre and the technician there was explaining to us: there are different kinds of deafness... mild hearing loss, moderate hearing loss, moderately severe hearing loss, severe hearing loss and profound hearing loss! At times spiritually too these hearing losses can be calculated in a similar fashion, but we need to add one more crucial type of hearing challenge. That is, Selective Hearing Loss! Hearing only what I want to hear, or refusing to hear what I do not want to hear merely because it causes me inconvenience. This is the syndrome that we see the people are in, in both first reading and the Gospel.

When Jeremiah spoke to the people about the impeding danger and their need to return to the Lord, they deemed him liable to death. When Jesus spoke to them on issues that really challenged their daily life, they looked at him with suspicion and despised him for the "ordinariness" from which he hailed.

The Word of God keeps rushing into our hearts. It would cleanse it, refresh it and fill it with life, if only we allow it to. If we are guarded, biased and suspicious, we would break no ground towards perfection. On this first friday of the month, let us allow the words from the Sacred Heart to fill us and challenge us, so that we may not fall prey to the syndrome of 'hearing merely what we want to hear' - Selective Hearing Loss!

வேறுபட்ட கேளாத்தன்மை!

ஆகஸ்ட் 3, 2018: எரே 26: 1-9; மத் 13: 54-58

ஒருமுறை எனது அன்னையோடு காது கேட்கும் திறன்கூட்டும் இயந்திரம் விநியோகிக்கும் மையத்திற்கு சென்றிருந்தேன். அங்கிருந்த பொறியாளர் காது கேளாத்தன்மையை பற்றி எங்களுக்கு விளக்கி கொண்டிருந்தார்... காது கேளாமையில் பல வகைகள் உண்டு: லேசான கேளாத்தன்மை, மிதமான கேளாத்தன்மை, சற்றே தீவிர கேளாத்தன்மை, தீவிர கேளாத்தன்மை, முற்றிலும் கேளாத்தன்மை என்று பட்டியலிட்டு கொண்டே சென்றார்... அப்போது எனக்கு ஒன்று தோன்றியது. இந்த வரிசையில் மற்றொரு கேளாத்தன்மையையும் நாம் சேர்க்க வேண்டியுள்ளது: சிலவற்றை மட்டும் கேளாத்தன்மை! பல வேளைகளில் நாம் அப்படி தான் செயல்படுகிறோம், நமக்கு வேண்டியதென்று நாம் கருதுவதை மட்டும் கேட்டுவிட்டு, நமக்கு தேவையில்லாதது என்று தோன்றுவனவற்றை கேட்காமலேயே விட்டுவிடுவது! இது பல நிலைகளில் நன்மை பயக்கக்கூடும் எனினும், இறைவார்த்தையை பொறுத்தமட்டில் இவ்வகை செயல்பாடு நம்மை அழிவுக்கு கொண்டுச்செல்லும், என்று இன்றைய வாசகங்கள் நமக்கு அறிவுறுத்துகின்றன. 

இறைவனை விட்டு விலகி சென்றுகொண்டே இருப்பதனால் அவர்களுக்கு வரவிருக்கும் அபாயங்களை எடுத்து கூறும் எரேமியா அந்த மக்களுக்கு எதிரியாகிவிடுகிறார், ஏனெனில் அவர்களுக்கு அதை கேட்க விருப்பமில்லை! இயேசு கிறிஸ்து சுற்றி இருந்தோரை பார்த்து அவர்களது வாழ்க்கை முறையை பார்த்து அதில் உள்ள குறைகளை சுட்டி காட்டியபோது அதை அவர்களால் ஏற்றுக்கொள்ள முடியவில்லை, இவர் யார் அதை கூறுவதற்கு! இவருக்கு என்ன தகுதி  இருக்கிறது என்று தங்களுக்குள் பேசிக்கொண்டதை கேட்டார்களே தவிர அவர் சொல்லுவதை கேட்கவில்லை, கேட்க விரும்பவில்லை!

இன்றும் நமது உள்ளங்களில் இறைவார்த்தை என்னும் அருளருவி பாய்ந்தவண்ணமே இருக்கிறது...அது பாய்ந்து, பாயும் இடமெல்லாம் தூய்மையும், செழுமையும் தரக்கூடும். ஆனால் அதை பாயாமல் செயலிழக்க செய்துவிட்டோமேயானால், நம்மில் எந்த ஒரு மாற்றமும் நிகழாது. மாற்றம் இல்லா நிலை, உயிரற்ற நிலையாகும்! நாம் உயிரற்றவர்களாக போகிறோமா, உயிரோட்டம் பெற விரும்பிகிறோமா? அது நம் தேர்வை பொறுத்ததே. 

இறைவார்த்தையை முழுமையாய் கேட்போம், உள்வாங்குவோம், மாற்றம் பெறுவோம், உயிரோட்டம் பெறுவோம், உலகிற்கு உயிரளிப்போம்!

மண் கலன்களும் மகிமையின் கருவூலங்களாகும்!

ஆகஸ்ட் 2, 2018: எரே 18: 1-6 ; மத் 13: 47-53

நான் மண்ணாக இருந்தாலும் குயவனின் கையில் இருக்கும் வரை என் வாழ்வு மகத்துவத்தை நோக்கியே சென்றுகொண்டிருக்கும். குயவனுக்கு மண்ணையும் தெரியும், சுற்றியுள்ள நிலைகளையும் தெரியும், வெறும் மண்ணான நான் பொன்னாக மிளிர, செய்ய வேண்டியது என்னவென்றும் தெரியும். அப்படியிருக்க அவரது கரங்களில் இருப்பதை காட்டிலும் மேலானதொரு பாதுகாப்பும் பொருளும் இருக்க முடியுமா? இதை ஏன் மனிதர்களாகிய நாம் உணர மறுக்கிறோம் என்பதே இன்றைய இறைவார்த்தையின் கேள்வி. 

என் தாயின் கருவிலே நான் உருவாகும் முன்னரே என்னை அறிந்திருக்கும் என் ஆண்டவருக்கு தெரியாததையா நான் தெரிந்துகொள்ள போகிறேன், அறிந்துணர போகிறேன், புரிந்து வளர போகிறேன்? அவரது திட்டத்தின் படி, அவரது சித்தத்தின் படி செயல்பட நான் என்னையே சரணாக்கும் போது என்னிலே பல மின்னல்கள் தோன்றுவது இயல்பே! சில மின்னும், சில பற்றியெறியச் செய்யும் - கவலைகள் வேண்டாம்: உடைந்தாலும், சிதைந்தாலும், குழைந்தாலும், உருகுலைந்தாலும், அவர் கையில் உள்ள வரை நான் உருவாகிக்கொண்டே இருக்கிறேன். ஒரு நாள் வரும், ஒரு தருணம் வரும்... நான் அழகிய மண்பாண்டமாவேன்; வெறும் மண் கலனல்ல, மகிமையின் கருவூலமாவேன்.

துன்பங்களும், துயரங்களும், வேதனைகளும், சோதனைகளும், என்னிலே நன்மையையும் தீமையையும் பிரித்தெடுக்கும் தருணமென்று நான் உணர வேண்டும். பிரித்தெடுத்த பின், பழையதும் புதியதுமாய் என்னுளிருந்து இறைவனின் மகிமை வெளிப்படுவதை நானும் இந்த உலகும் கண்டு அதிசயிக்கும் தருணம் வரும்... நான் செய்ய வேண்டியதெல்லாம் ஒன்று தான்: என்றும் குயவராம் இறைவனின் கையில் வெறும் மண்ணாய், பாசத்தோடு பக்குவப்பட்ட நம்பிக்கையோடு நிலையாய் இருக்க முடிவெடுப்பதே!

மண் கலன்களும் மகிமையின் கருவூலங்களாய் உருவெடுக்கும் அந்த நாள் வெகு தொலைவில் இல்லை - காத்திருப்போம், உருபெறுவோம், இறைவனின் பிள்ளைகளாவோம்!

The Pot and the Store room

Thursday, 17th week in Ordinary time

August 2, 2018: Jer 18: 1-6 ; Mt 13: 47-53

Being a pot in the hands of the potter gives me the hope that I will never go waste. The potter knows me and knows the world that is around. He will make certain that I am relevant and useful in the right time.

God knows me through and through, as the Potter his stuff and his skill. God will make certain that I am relevant and needed in God's own time. There could be moments the shape would degenerate or a single air pocket would put the entire process at stake. But all that I need to ensure is, regardless of all these developments, remain in the hands of the Master Potter! 

God is ever in the process of designing me and certainly at an appointed time God will use me as God's store room of treasures for others!  Saints are such instances! They are those who totally surrendered, limitlessly obeyed and thoughtlessly carried out God's wishes. And so they began to store within themselves great treasures, from which even today, god continues to serve us God's children. 

If I allow myself to be under God's absolute sway, first the good and bad within me will be sorted out. It is not merely a process of judgement, framing me to be good or bad, but a moment of shaping where the edges are roughed and corners are trimmed. I shall soon be shaped and the second process begins, where from within me blessings, both new and old, emanate spreading the glory of God!

All that we need to do is today, decide to place ourselves completely in the hands of God so that we could be in time, simple pots, weak and humble but holding the best of gifts as store rooms of the grace of God.

நம்பிக்கையில் அகலும் இரவுகள்

ஆகஸ்ட் 1, 2018: எரே 15: 10,16-20; மத் 13: 44-46

முதல் வாசகத்தில் இன்று இறைவாக்கினர் எரேமியாவை காணும்போது நமக்கே உள்ளம் கலங்கிவிடுகிறது. இறைவனுக்கென்றே வாழ்ந்த அவருக்கு ஏன் இத்தனை துன்பங்கள் என்று அவர் மீது இரங்கத்தோன்றுகின்றது. அவரும் தன்னையே நொந்துக் கொள்கிறார்... தான் ஏன் பிறந்தேன் என்று வேதனைப்படுகிறார். எத்தனை பேர் இவ்வாறு இன்று சிந்தித்துக் கொண்டிருக்கிறார்கள்... அங்கலாய்த்துக் கொண்டிருக்கிறார்கள்! நம்மில் சிலரும் கூட இப்படிப்பட்ட மனநிலையோடு இன்று வாழ்ந்துக் கொண்டிருக்கலாம்! துன்பங்கள், துயரங்கள், கடன், குழப்பங்கள், உடல்நிலை கேடு, மனநிலை தடுமாற்றம், உறவுகளில் விரிசல்கள், புரிதலின்மை, தவறான புரிதல்கள், சண்டைகள், சச்சரவுகள், என பல நிலைகளில் இருள் நம்மை சூழ்ந்திருக்கலாம்... ஆனால் எரேமியாவுக்கு இருந்த அந்த தெளிவு நம்மிடம் உள்ளதா? எங்கிருந்து வந்தது அந்த தெளிவு? 

எத்தனை துன்பங்கள் வந்தாலும், எத்தனை தோல்விகள் அடைந்தாலும், எவ்வித இருள் என்னை சூழ்ந்தாலும் நான் வீழ்ந்துவிடேன்! ஏனெனில், என் ஆண்டவர் என்னோடிருக்கிறார்... அவர் மீதுள்ள நம்பிக்கையில் இந்த இருள் சூழ்ந்த இரவுகள் கடந்து போகும், அருள் நிறை காலங்கள் என்னை வந்தடையும் என்ற தெளிவு அவரிடம் இருந்தது. ஆண்டவர் என் சார்பாய் இருக்கும் போது எனக்கெதிராக இருப்பவர் யார் (உரோ 8:31), என்று சூளுரைத்த பவுலடிகளாரை போல, பல புனிதர்களை நாம் இந்த நாட்களிலே சந்திக்கவிருக்கிறோம்... நேற்று நாம் கொண்டாடிய இஞ்ஞாசியார், இன்று நாம் நினைவுகூரும் அல்போன்சு லிகோரியார், இன்னும் இவ்வார  இறுதியில் வரும் மரிய வியான்னி என்று அனைவருமே இந்த வாழ்க்கை முறையை நமக்கு முன்மொழிகிறார்கள்!

நிலத்தடியில் மறைந்து கிடந்த புதையலை கண்டடைந்தாற்போல், உலகறியா விலையுயர்ந்த முத்தொன்றை கையிலேந்தியதுபோல் உணர்ந்தார் எரேமியா - ஒரு இறைவாக்கினனின் முழுமையான மனநிலை அது. நாம் ஒவ்வொருவரும் அத்தகையதொன்றையே கண்டடைந்துள்ளோம்: நமது நம்பிக்கை. அது நமது இரவுகளையும் இருளையும் இல்லாமலாக்கும் அரிய ஆற்றல் கொண்டது. அதை நாம் உணர்ந்திருக்கிறோமா? இறைவன் என் பக்கமிருக்க, யார் எனக்கெதிராக இருந்தால் எனக்கென்ன, என்று துணிந்து வாழும் கிறிஸ்துவர்களாய் உருவெடுப்போம்! 

A Clarity amidst all confusions

Wednesday, 17th week in Ordinary time

August 1, 2018: Jer 15:10, 20-21; Mt 13: 44-46

The first reading pictures to us Jeremiah as a person totally lost, confused, demoralised a bit and to an extent even at his wit's end. He speaks of how miserable he is and how he is surrounded by the evil doers and god haters. However, amidst all these confusions, there is a constant clarity that is visible: the clarity that God is for him. He was convinced, whoever be against him, God was for him. As St. Paul puts it, "if God is for us, who can be against us?" (Rom 8:31). That clarity is the lesson today!

Once again falling back  to the first reading we see that, Jeremiah endures all pain and suffering, all persecution and injustice for the sake of the mission entrusted to him, because he was confident that it was God who has entrusted it to him. Like the treasure hidden in the field and that exceptional pearl sighted among the rest, he had the promises of God well fixed in his mind. That was enough a reason for him to risk even his life.

We have had great saints in history who have lived this life of prophecy, who have lived their lives in the midst of utter confusions and endless tribulations. All of them were ready to give up anything in life, or even give up their life, because they had unearthed an unbelievable treasure in the midst of that barren land, because they had sighted the most precious stone in the midst of all the deceiving glitters. If we find the Lord, if we become aware of what the Lord has to offer us, we shall have that enviable clarity amidst confusion; and that alone is enough for a meaningful living.

Tuesday, 17th week in Ordinary time

July 31, 2018: Jer 14: 17-22; Mt 13: 36-43

I was wondering why the Lord made me today listen to a person who was out of the blue sharing with me the whole lot of his personal vocational journey. I was restless to get back to my room to finish up a few commitments of the day, but the person would not leave me. After a long session of listening to the person, I come to reflect on the Word and It strikes me with such a bolt: Rescue us O Lord for the glory of your name! The person was sharing with me the possibility of how so much of our own personal glory and ego could get mixed up with what we call, 'God's will'. 

Killings and Insensitive acts against human dignity fill the dailies of these days. Scandals abound in the Church which I love and treasure. Uncertainties and clueless difficulties keep increasing by the day. Things which we have been upholding for centuries are brought under ruthless questioning at times - and the first reading brought this scenario to my mind with such lucidity. And I questioned, 'why Lord? why this today?'

The Gospel came as a response: because there is evil along with what is truly good; there are intentions and projects initiated by the enemy but everything looks like good. Do not be eager to judge what is good and what is evil - you cannot; you will go wrong! "WAIT" said the Lord. The only thing that you can judge is your own intentions and your own purposes and your own projects and your own thinking! Be sincere - identify the grain and the darnel, but within you! Distinguish the seed from the weed, but within you! What you hold on to, is it from the Lord or is it from the evil one?

Whatever you wish, whatever you say or whatever you do, let it be to give glory to God and to God alone! We have a great example of this in St. Ignatius of Loyola who lived, worked and initiated a movement all for the greater glory of God. Let this wonderful motto be ours too: Ad maiorem Dei gloriam - to the greater glory of God!
