மே 2: பிரச்சனைகளில் கிறிஸ்துவின் மனநிலை

இணைந்திடாவிடில் கணிதர இயலாது! 

தி. ப. 15:1-6; யோ 15: 1-8

இன்றைய பதிலுரைப்பாடல் நம்மை மகிழ்ச்சியோடு எருசலேம் செல்ல அழைக்கிறது... முதல் வாசகத்தில் இருவர் செல்வதை நாம் காண்கின்றோம் - பவுலும் பர்னபாவும். ஆனால் மகிழ்ச்சியோடு அல்ல... சிறிது பிரச்சனையோடு. பிரச்சனை இங்கு என்னவென்றால், யார் சரி யார் தவறு, யார் பெரியவர் யார் சிறியவர், என்பதல்ல. விசுவாசிகள் மீது தேவைக்குமேல் பாரத்தை சுமத்த கூடாது என்ற எண்ணமே மேலோங்கி நிற்பதை நாம் காணமுடிகின்றது. 

அங்கு இருந்த பிரச்சனை, அதற்கு அவர்கள் கண்ட தீர்வு இவ்விரண்டையும் தாண்டி, அந்த பிரச்னையை அவர்கள் சந்தித்த விதம், நமக்கு பெரும் பாடமாய் உள்ளது. இதுவே கிறிஸ்துவின் மனநிலையோடு பிரச்சனைகளை அணுகும் முறையாகும். இன்று திருச்சபைக்குள்ளே சிறு பிரச்னை என்றாலும், சுவரொட்டிகள், பதாகைகள், மொட்டைக்கடிதங்கள், முகநூலில் அவதூறான பதிவுகள், பெயர் சிதைப்புக்கள் என இறங்கிவிடும் கலாச்சாரத்தில், பொறுமையோடு, ஒரு குடும்பமாய், இறைவனின் உறவில், பிரச்னையை சிந்தித்து பார்த்து, எது சரி என்று சீர்துக்கி பார்த்து, இறைவனுக்கு எது உகந்தது என்பதை மட்டும் மனதில் நிறுத்தி, இறைவனின் மக்களுக்காக முடிவுகள் எடுக்கும் முறை என்பது சற்று பதத்து தான் போய்விட்டது.   

வேறொன்றும் எனக்கு மனதில் வருகிறது... இந்த புரிதலின்மை, தவறான புரிதல்கள், சிறு சண்டைகள் அனைத்துமே எப்படி கையாளப்படுகின்றன? இந்த நாட்களில் நான் நான்கைந்து முகநூல் குழுமங்களிலிருந்து வெளியேறிவிட்டேன்... காரணம், கிறிஸ்தவர்கள் - கத்தோலிக்கர்கள், கத்தோலிக்கரல்லாதவர்கள் என்று ஒருவரை ஒருவர் எதிர்த்து போடும் பதிவுகளும் கருத்துக்களும், சண்டைகளும்... அருவறுக்கத்தக்கதாய் இருக்கின்றன. கலந்தாலோசித்தல், உரையாடல் இவை நல்லது தான். ஆனால் ஒற்றுமை, புரிதல், என்ற இலக்குகளை நோக்கி இருக்கவேண்டும். அடுத்தவரை இழிவு படுத்த, சிறுமை படுத்த, நானே சரி என்று நிரூபிக்க, அடுத்தவரின் மனதை புண்படுத்த, தீர்ப்பிட, குறைகூற... என்ற இவையே இலக்காகும் போது அது உண்மையிலே கிறிஸ்துவின் மனநிலையோடு செய்யப்படுகிறதா என்று கேட்க தோன்றுகின்றது. 

ஒன்றை மட்டும் மனதிற்கொள்வோம்: என்னில் நீங்கள் இணைந்திடாவிடில் கணிகொடுக்க இயலாது. என்னில்  நீங்கள்... இணைந்திடாவிடில்! நாம் கிறிஸ்துவின்  சீடர்களாய் இணைந்திடாவிடில் கணி கொடுக்க இயலாது என்பதை உணர்வோம்... கிறிஸ்துவின் மனநிலையை அணிந்துகொள்வோம்!

Unite to Resolve Conflicts

Wednesday, 5th week in Eastertide 

2nd May, 2018: Acts 15: 1-6; Jn 15: 1-8

The responsorial psalm invites one to go to Jerusalem with rejoicing and we see two people going there in today's first reading: Paul and Barnabas. However, not with rejoicing but they go with a crisis. A noble fact is that they are insistent that they wouldn't burden the people unnecessarily. The forward thinking, right priorities and empathy for the believers are a few of the salient qualities that stand out in this passage. 

Apart from the crisis and the solution that they sought, the clear cut lesson is to understand the method of facing and resolving a crisis in 'Christ'ian terms. Banners and posters, anonymous letters and abusive posts, indecent demonstrations and political insinuations...none of these were used when the crisis arose. They simply got together. They united in the Lord, to find out what the Lord willed for them as one family of God. 

There is another thing that comes to my mind thinking of 'crisis' or lack of agreement or possibility of misunderstanding. These days I have gotten out of atleast four or five facebook groups because there were so many Christians - Catholics versus Non Catholics - getting into so many unnecessary arguments and fights. Dialogue and Conversation are fine, provided they are for further understanding and unity building. Not for the sake of mudslinging, finger-pointing and sheep stealing! It disgusts! 

One thing we are called to remember: we cannot bear fruit apart from the Lord; we cannot bear much of them without uniting as one heart and one mind in the Lord! That readiness to unite gave a moral authority to the Early Christian Community and made them true and attractive witnesses (cf. Acts 2:47). Are we ready to unite? Or are we fighting to prove each other wrong? 

மே 1: உழைப்பும் இறைவனின் அழைப்பும்

தூய வளனார் நினைவு நாள் 

இன்றைய வாசகங்கள்: தொ நூ 1:26 - 2:3; மத் 13: 54-58

உழைப்பு, வேலை, பணி... இவை அனைவரின் வாழ்விலும் தவறாத ஒரு அங்கம். உழைப்பு என்பது கிறிஸ்தவ வாழ்விலே வெறும் செய்யும் வேலை என்பதை தாண்டி, ஆழமான ஒரு பொருளை பெற்றுள்ளது. இந்த புரிதலை ஆழப்படுத்தவே தூய வளனாரை நமக்கு முன் மாதிரியாக, உழைப்பாளர்களின் பாதுகாவலராக இன்று நினைவுப்படுத்துகிறது திருச்சபை. 

நாம் செய்யும் எந்த ஒரு பணியும் மூன்று பரிமானங்களை கொண்டிருக்க வேண்டும்...

முதலாவது, தன்னடையாளத்தின் வெளிப்பாடு : என் உழைப்பு, என்னையே நான் அடுத்தவருக்கும் அனைவருக்கும் வெளிப்படுத்தும் வழியாகும். ஒரு வேலையை நான் செய்து முடிக்கும் போது என்னையே நான் அதில் காணவேண்டும். ஒரு சிலர் செய்த வேலைகளை யார் செய்தது என்பதை அவர்கள் சொல்லாமலேயே தெரிந்துகொள்ளலாம். அவ்வாறே, இறைவன் இன்று முதல் வாசகத்திலே...தான் செய்து முடித்த அனைத்தும் நல்லது எனக்கண்டார் என்று நாம் படிக்கிறோம். அவர் தன்னையே தன் படைப்பில் கண்டார். 

இரண்டாவது, அடுத்தவரின் நலன் பேணுவது: நான் செய்யும் ஒவ்வொரு வேலையும் அடுத்தவரின், மானுடத்தின் நன்மையை மனதிற்கொண்டு செய்யப்பட வேண்டும். உழைப்பில் ஈடுபடும் நாம் நமது நலனுக்காக மட்டுமல்ல, மனிதத்தின் நன்மைக்காக, இறைவனின் அனைத்து பிள்ளைகளின் நன்மைக்காகவும் செயகிறோம், என்று உணர்ந்து ஈடுபடவேண்டும்.

மூன்றாவதாக, கடவுளின் கரமாதல்: நாம் செய்யும் பணியால், நமது பயிற்சியால், நமது மதி நுட்பத்தால், நாம் இறைவனின் கரங்களாய் மாறும் வழியே நமது உழைப்பு. நம் ஒவ்வொருவரையும் படைத்த இறைவன், நமக்கென ஒரு அழைப்பை கொடுத்துள்ளார்...அந்த அழைப்பின் இணைப்பிரியா வெளிப்பாடு நம் உழைப்பு! 

நாம் செய்யும் வேலைகளை இந்த மனநிலையோடு செய்கிறோமா என்று இன்று சிந்திப்போம்: நமது சுயவெளிப்பாடாக, மனிதத்தின் நன்மையை பேணுவதற்காக, கடவுளின் கரங்களாய் நாம் உருவாவதற்காக நமது பணிகள் நமக்கு உதவுகின்றனவா?

இவற்றில்... எங்காவது பணம், விலை, மதிப்பு என்று ஏதாவது நாம் பேசியுள்ளோமா? ஆனால்  நடைமுறையில், வேலை என்றாலே பணத்தோடும், அதன் விலைமதிப்போடும் மட்டுமே இணைத்து சிந்திப்பது ஏன்? எங்கேயோ, ஏதோ தவறான பாதையில் சென்றுவிட்டது போன்று தோன்றுகிறதா?

Three Integral dimensions of Work 

Celebrating St. Joseph, the Worker: 1st May, 2018Gen 1:26 - 2:3; Mt 13: 54-58

Work... is part of everyone's life. As the world celebrates the Day of Work and the Workers, the Church presents to us a beautiful model of a Worker - St. Joseph, the Carpenter. 

Every work that we do should have three dimensions to it, to make it truly holistic! On a day such as today, it is right that we dwell on this aspect of Work and reflect a little. 

The First dimension is the SELF: Work as a self expression of the one who works. Everything that I do, should become part of what I am. I should be able to see at the end of the work, in the outcome, a bit of me. The beautiful example is given in the first reading today, where we see God at work and at the end of it all, God found that it was good; God found that God was present in the works that God had created.

The Second dimension is the OTHER: Work should add to the common good. Every work of mine should add to the common good in some way or the other, directly or indirectly. A carpenter for example is someone who expresses his or her self in a product that would serve the common good; or a sculptor or an engineer or a teacher... 

The Third dimension is GOD, the author of all work: Work should be a participation in the divine design, the eternal plan, the creative mission of God. The psalm brings out the crux of it, invoking the Lord to give success to the work of our hands. It is in the eternal plan that our work draws its meaning and success. At  work, we partake in our role as co-creators with God the Creator!

Having said all this: let us ask a question. How many of us are involved in a work, an occupation, a livelihood that reflects all these 3 dimensions? And, where is the place of "money" within this grand picture of 3 dimensions? Are our thoughts about our work and our calculations about our career, fitting into this framework? Or have we moved far far away from any such holistic thought pattern?

ஏப்ரல் 30: நம்மில் வாழும் இறைவன்

உலகம் நம்மிடம் காண விழைவது என்ன?

இன்றிலிருந்து புதியதொரு கருத்தை முன்மொழிகிறார் கிறிஸ்து... நாம் உண்மையில் இறைவனோடு இணைந்தவர்களாய் இருந்தால், இந்த உலகம் நம்மில் காண விழைவது என்ன?

கிறிஸ்துவை ஏற்போருக்கு கிறிஸ்து இன்று வாக்களிக்கும் கொடையாம் தூய ஆவி இறைவனை நம்மில் வாழ செய்கிறார். நாம் இறைவனை தேடி எங்கும் வேறெங்கும் செல்ல வேண்டாம் ஏனெனில் அவர் நமக்குள்ளே வாழ்கிறார்... நம்மில் வாழும் இறைவன் நம் வழியாய் இந்த உலகிற்கு தன்னையே வெளிப்படுத்துகிறார். ஞானத்தின் இறைவன், உண்மையின் இறைவன், வலுவூட்டும் இறைவன், திடமளிக்கும் இறைவனாம் தூய ஆவியார் நம்மில் வாழும் போது நம்மை காண்பவர்கள், இறைவனின் மகிமையை காண்பார்கள். பவுல் பர்னபாஸ் இவர்களில் இன்றைய முதல் வாசகத்தில் மக்கள் கண்டது இதுவே! 

சென்ற வாரம் முழுவதும் கிறிஸ்து தனது சீடர்கள் எப்படி இருப்பார்கள் என்று இதைத்தான் நமக்கு அறிவுறுத்தினார்: என்னில் நம்பிக்கை கொள்பவன் நான் செய்பவற்றை செய்வான், என்னிலும் மேலானவைகளை செய்வான்! நற்செய்தியின் மகிழ்ச்சி என்ற தனது திருத்தூது செய்தியிலே திருத்தந்தை பிரான்சிஸ் நாம் அனைவரும் நற்செய்தி அறிவிப்பாளர்களாக அழைக்கப்பட்டுள்ளோம்... ஆவியால் ஆட்கொள்ளப்பட்ட நற்செய்தியாளர்களாக நாம் மாற வேண்டும் என்று நமக்கு அறிவுறுத்துகிறார். 

ஆவியால் ஆட்கொள்ளப்பட்ட நற்செய்தியாளர்கள் எப்படி இருப்பார்கள்... தங்கள் குரலை உயர்த்தாமலேயே இறைவனை குறித்து உரக்க பேசுபவர்களாய், ஒரு வார்த்தையும் கூறாமலேயே இறைவனை மற்றவர்களுக்கு விளக்குபவர்களாய், அதை பற்றி சிந்திக்காமலேயே இறைவனை மற்றவர்களுக்கு உணர்த்துபவர்களாய், சுருங்கக்கூறின் தூயஆவியால் நிரப்பப்பட்டு அவர்களில்  வாழும் இறைவனை உலகம் காண செய்பவர்களாய் இருப்பார்கள். 

நம்மில் வாழும் இறைவனை... நம்முள் உணர்வோம், இவ்வுலகம் உணரச்செய்வோம் .

The Lord alive in us

Monday, 5th week in Eastertide

30th April, 2018: Acts 14: 5-18 ; Jn 14: 21-24

Jesus initiates the next phase... he promises his Spirit who will reside in our hearts and instruct us of the right thing to be done at the right time. The Spirit of truth and counsel, the Spirit of strength and determination. It is the Spirit that makes them so strong and powerful that Paul and Barnabas were considered to be like gods.

This is a reminder of what Jesus promised us in last week: the one who believes in me will do all that I do, and even more than that! The Holy Father in his letter Evangelium Gaudium speaks of Spirit-filled Evangelisers... that is what the Lord wants us to become,  in and through our daily life,  within our families and wherever we are... Spirit filled Evangelisers.

People who proclaim without raising their voice; people who explain without uttering a word, people who manifest the Lord without being even conscious of it, people who make the Lord present wherever they are without having to try hard to do so: in short, people who become so filled with the Spirit that the world sees the Lord alive in them!

Remain, Realise and Rejoice! 

5th Sunday of Easter: 29th April, 2018

Acts 9: 26-31; 1 Jn 3:18-24;Jn 15: 1-8

The annual general body meeting of the Ocean World was in progress. The customary speech of the President came and the Blue Whale came up to speak: "The Ocean is great, mighty and merciful. The Ocean gives us all that we need and there is no lack for us. The Ocean sustains us and in the Ocean we live, move and have our being." A just born sardine was playing around her mother but her ears attentive to what was being said. Suddenly she got curious and asked the mother: Mom, where is this Ocean? Can we go to see it? When can we go? The mother was wondering for an answer! Are you wondering too: such is a question we often ask about the Lord. Where is the Lord? Where can we find the Lord? The fact is: WE ARE IN THE LORD. That is why it is so difficult to find the Lord when we search. Be Still and know that I am (Ps 46:10), says the Lord. We are in the Lord, there is no need to search, we have to become aware of it, become conscious of it and be grateful for it.

If we become truly aware of it, we would rejoice. Whatever happens to us, good or bad, it happens in the Lord. We would rejoice over it. Today, as in the week past, we see that the early christians, the apostles, and especially Paul, are put into difficulty, persecuted, misunderstood, rejected, laughed at... but that did not matter to them. All that they did was, they rejoiced in the Lord. We read that yesterday in the first reading...they were filled with joy and the holy spirit! That is the reason they increased, they bore fruit, they multiplied, they inspired others, they drew people to themselves. They were so rooted in the Lord and the Lord's teachings that they bore abundant fruit! 

Today, we are in a situation that is not much at ease. The times are changing and a believer seems to be slowly growing out of place in this world. Specially a Christian seems to be appearing irrelevant to the scene today. The Christian life principles come under so much of scrutiny and criticism these days. But we cannot give up on them merely for this reason. The only way we can make our meaning is by remaining in the Lord. We remain in the Lord when we keep the Lord's commandments. The choice we make in favour of the precepts of the Lord is a choice we make for God and for a God-centred life. 

Let us remain in the Lord and bear much fruit. Let us realise that fact and grow in it. Let us rejoice in the Lord and draw the world to Him. Then will the Lord be glorified in and through us.

Ways to belong to the flock: Possess Joy and the Holy Spirit

Saturday, 4th week in Eastertide
28th April, 2018: Acts 13: 44-52; Jn 14:7-14

The disciples were filled with joy and holy spirit, says the first reading today. It becomes hard to connect that this is the ending note of a passage speaking about the rejection and insult of the apostles by their own fellow Jews. Elsewhere too we would read that they returned happy that they were able to suffer for the sake of the name of  Jesus (cf. Acts 5:41). 

However it would make clear sense once we read and understand what Jesus tells us in the Gospel today: whoever believes in me will do the works that I do and will do greater ones than these. The apostles seem to have inherited it from their Master to consider themselves blessed for having to suffer for righteousness sake, to thirst for justice. Joy, for Jesus meant being in the Spirit and being in the Spirit meant standing by the Lord, with truth and dexterity!

It used to be my normal experience to be laughed at, when I speak to groups about standing for truth and facing the consequences. Be it groups of youngsters or groups of consecrated people, they smile when I say, 'stick to the truth and stand for the right wherever you are.' They would smile and conclude saying, 'then that would be the end of us"...meaning that they would lose any future if they did it! It would be like, they telling me: that sounds good when said, but living it is not feasible. I appreciate the honesty of these people, but constantly question myself: when will we be matured enough to shake the dust off our feet and walk, and keep walking!

ஏப்ரல் 28: அவரது மக்களாக சில வழிகள்

6. ஆவியில் மகிழ்ந்திருங்கள் 

சீடர்களோ தூய ஆவியால் ஆட்கொள்ளப்பட்டு மகிழ்ச்சியில் திளைத்திருந்தார்கள், என்று இன்றைய முதல் வாசகம் முடிகிறது. இந்த முடிவுக்கும், வாசகத்தில் நாம் படிப்பதற்கும் எந்த தொடர்பும் இல்லாதது போல தோன்றும், ஏனெனில் வாசகம் முழுவதும் சீடர்கள் எவ்வாறு நிராகரிக்கப்பட்டார்கள் என்பதையே படிக்கிறோம்... ஆனால் அத்தனை புறக்கணிப்புக்களுக்கு பிறகும், அவர்கள் மகிழ்ச்சியில் திளைத்திருந்தார்கள் என்கிறது இறைவார்த்தை.  வேறொரு இடத்திலும் கூட, அவர்கள் கிறிஸ்துவுக்காக துன்புறுவதில் மகிழ்ச்சியுற்றார்கள் என்று நாம் படிக்கிறோம் (தி.ப. 5:41)

உண்மையில் இதற்கு பொருள் கொள்ள வேண்டுமென்றால்  இன்றைய நற்செய்தியில் கிறிஸ்து கூறுவதை நாம் புரிந்துகொள்ள வேண்டும்: என்னில் நம்பிக்கை கொள்பவன் என்னை காட்டிலும் அறிய செயல்கள் செய்வான்! தங்கள் குருவை முழுமையாய் பின்தொடரும் சீடர்களை நாம் இங்கு பார்க்கிறோம். அவரை போலவே, நீதிக்காக பசி தாகம் கொண்டவர்களாக வாழவும், உண்மைக்கு சான்று பகர்வதே தங்கள் அழைப்பு என்பதை உணரவும் அவர்கள் தங்கள் ஆசிரியராம் கிறிஸ்துவிடமிருந்தே கற்றுக்கொண்டார்கள். தங்கள் குரு கிறிஸ்துவை போன்றே அவர்கள் தூய ஆவியால் ஆட்கொள்ளப்பட்டு மகிழ்ச்சியில் திளைத்திருந்தார்கள்!

பலமுறை எனக்கு நிகழ்ந்த ஒரு அனுபவம் உண்டு - இளைஞர்களோடும் சரி, இளம் துறவிகளோடும் சரி... அவர்கள் எதிர்கொள்ளும் சில பிரச்சனைகளை குறித்து பேசும்போது "உண்மைக்காக நில்லுங்கள், அதனால் ஏற்படும் விளைவுகளை சந்திக்க தயாராக இருங்கள்" என்று நான் கூறும்போதெல்லாம்  என்னை பார்த்து ஒரு சிறு புன்னகையோடு அவர்கள் கூறியதுண்டு: 'அதோடு எங்கள் கதை முடிந்துவிடும்' என்று. அவர்களது வெளிப்படையான கருத்தை நான் பாராட்டினாலும் எனக்குள்ளாக ஒரு கேள்வியை கேட்டுக்கொள்வேன்: கால்களில் உள்ள தூசியை தட்டிவிட்டு அடுத்த நல்ல காரியத்தை நோக்கி செல்லும் மாற்றம் நமக்குள் எப்போது வரப்போகிறது ?

5. உள்ளம் கலங்காதீர்கள் 

அவரது மக்களாய் வாழ கிறிஸ்து கற்று தரும் அடுத்த வழி: நீங்கள் உள்ளம் கலங்காதீர்கள். 

கிறிஸ்துவே நமக்கு அளிக்கபட்ட வாக்கு, அவரே அதன் நிறைவு; அவரே வழி அவரே நாம் சென்றடைய வேண்டிய இலக்கு; அவரே உண்மை, அவரே வாழ்வின் உண்மையான பொருள். அவரை நாம் கொண்டிருக்கும்போது நமக்கேதும் குறையேது? அவரை நாம் கொண்டிராவிடில் நமக்கு நிறைவளிப்பது எது? குழப்பங்களும், சோதனைகளும் வரும்போது நாம் கலங்கினோம் என்றால், அவரது உடனிருப்பை நாம் மறக்கிறோம் என்று பொருள். எதை கண்டும் நான் அஞ்சிடேன் - ஏனெனில் உண்மையை நான் அறிவேன், உண்மை வழி என் கண் முன்னே உள்ளது, என் வாழ்வு என் கையில் உள்ளது, ஏனெனில் என் ஆண்டவர் என்னோடு உள்ளார்! 

எதை கண்டும் நான் அஞ்ச தேவை இல்லை, ஏனெனில் அவரறியாது எதுவும் நடப்பது இயலாது - என் ஆற்றலுக்கு மீறிய சோதனையும் என்னை அணுகாது. அவரில் நான் ஊன்றி வாழும்போது என் வாழ்வே அவருக்கு சான்றாகி மிளிர்கின்றது...சான்றாய் மாறாது வாழும் எந்த வாழ்வும் கிறிஸ்தவ வாழ்வாய் இராது. கலங்காதிருப்போம், அவர் மக்களாவோம், நம்மில் அவரை பூரிப்படைய செய்வோம்!
