THE HEART AFFIRE

Burning with love for us!

8th June, 2018 - Solemnity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus

Hos 11:1,3-4,8-9; Eph 3:8-12,14-19; Jn 19: 31-37

One of the striking elements of the image of the Sacred Heart is the flame that accompanies it. That is the only thing that this naive generation has left out, from the Sacred Heart, when they adapted its symbol to indicate the love between two persons! The heart with an arrow piercing it...you have seen it for sure, haven't you!

But this flame is a special symbol of the Heart of Jesus and it has three significant messages and challenges to give us - about what we understand by true love:

1. Sacrificing: the flame establishes that the sacred heart is a sacrificing heart, not an expecting heart! The flame burns and it consumes the heart...the love that Jesus has for us consumes Jesus...the sacrifice on the Cross, the giving of Jesus' body and blood - even the last drop of blood and water, as the Gospel reminds us today. These are all clearly evidences of this quality of the heart of Jesus, which burns itself in love for us. It gives of itself and never expects anything in return! How sacrificing is my love?

2. Seeking: the flame is also characteristically something that seeks to reach out. Look at a fire as it burns will it remain in just one spot and be satisfied? No. It seeks. Jesus seeks, seeks to reach out to us, seeks to warm our hearts, seeks to enlighten our paths, seeks to ease our troubles, seeks to meet our needs as a father or a mother seeks to do to their children. Prophet Hosea presents this scene so vividly in his poem...as the Lord expressing how much the Lord seeks to care for us and how insensitive we turn. A love that seeks us for our good. A love that goes in search of the one who is loved for the good of the other! It is not a ego-filled, self seeking, fulfillment of one's own cravings. How selfless is my love?

3. Shining: the flame is radiant. It shines forth, it shines to invite us to follow the model.  St. Paul portrays this quality so well when he says in Jesus what has been hidden for centuries has come to light - the love of God can no more be hidden from humanity. It is revealed and revealed to its full. The shining flame is an open challenge - can you be like me, can you love like me, can you care for the others like me, can you be sacrificing like me, can you seek to serve others, can you be affire as I am, passionate about filling this world with true love and make it a better place, a heaven on earth, the Reign of God here and now!

Faithfulness - an ever flowing Stream!

Thursday, 9th week in Ordinary Time

7th June, 2018 - 2 Tim 2: 8-15; Mk 2: 28b -34

Even if we are unfaithful the Lord is faithful, because he cannot deny himself! God is faithfulness personified. Our faithfulness to the Lord is a response that we give to the faithfulness of the Lord. We love because, God loved us first. We are faithful because the Lord is faithful to us! In fact, our faithfulness is our readiness and our commitment to be faithful to the faithfulness of the Lord!

In fact on wedding days, ordination anniversaries or anniversaries of religious profession, I never feel comfortable sending a 'Congrats' note to people! It is not merely a moment of merit... but a moment to be grateful, grateful to the faithfulness of God. It is a sign that God has been faithful to us, in spite of all our weaknesses and unfaithfulness. I feel more comfortable wishing people all the best and celebrating the goodness of the Lord.

Our life is one long celebration of the faithfulness of God. Every time we fail, it is not that we are failing God but we are failing ourselves, we are losing the grace of the faithfulness of God - such a gratuitous and gracious gift that God keeps giving us. The sweetest of the news is that: that faithfulness of God will not be denied to us at any point of time. Even at the last moment of his life, the thief who was crucified beside Jesus was able to inherit paradise!

As the responsorial psalm affirms, the faithfulness of God is a never drying stream and an ever flowing river - all that we need to do is make ourselves capable to drink of it!

Fanning into a Flame the Gift of God

Wednesday, 9th week in Ordinary Time

6th June, 2018 - 2 Tim 1: 1-3,6-12; Mk 12: 18-27

A beautiful expression that Paul uses today, which explains the truth of Christian faith: fanning into a flame the gift of God. Just imagine the embers, which look all out and gone, but when you fan it, there comes a flurry of ashes and then a small little spark that flickers from beneath, and in no time blazes into a devouring fire! That is faith. That is Christ, that is the Risen Lord. 

This is an imagery of Hope, an imagery that Resurrection has left in the heart of every disciple of the Risen Lord. Everything seemed dead; the apostles and disciples and the pious women along with Mary, were still and quiet - when the flame was fanned into a blaze - the Lord arose and everything changed!

In our life too, when there are sorrows and failures, troubles and downfalls, and every things seems down and out, remember there is a fire that is lurking beneath - the fire of power, love and self control and that fire shall be fanned in time, into a flame by faith with which we endure!

Those who think of nothing but failure and finding fault, judging and criticising, discouraging and demotivating are people who neither know God nor understand the Word. If we truly understand the Word and know God, we would rise above all petty considerations, childish bickerings, worthless competitions, lifeless relationships! 

We are called constantly to be aware of the God of the living, the God of life, the God of marvelous gifts and keep fanning into a flame that gift of God, the gift of the Spirit: Our Faith!

ஜூன் 6: தூண்டி எழுப்பிட ...

எழுப்புதல் என்பதன் உண்மை பொருள் என்ன?

2 திமோ 1: 1-3,6-12; மாற் 12: 18-27

இது எழுப்புதல் கூட்டங்களின் காலமாகிவிட்டது. எங்கு பார்த்தாலும் எழுப்புதல் கூட்டங்கள், எழுப்புதல் செபங்கள் என்ற பெயரில் கரகோஷங்களும், கூச்சல்களும், சில வேளைகளில் காலக்கொடுமையான கூத்துக்களும் நடந்து கொண்டிருக்கின்றன... இந்த பின்னணியில் இன்றைய இறைவார்த்தையில் பவுலடிகளார் நம்மை உண்மை எழுப்புதலை குறித்து சிந்திக்க தூண்டுகிறார். அவர் பயன்படுத்தும் அழகான உவமையை பாருங்கள்... நான் உன் மீது கைகளை வைத்து செபித்தபோது இறைவன் உனக்குள் தந்த கொடைகளை "தூண்டி எழுப்பிட" உன்னை அழைக்கிறேன், என்று தீமோத்தேயுவிடம் கூறுகிறார். 

நாம் மனதில் கொள்ள வேண்டிய உவமை - எரிந்து முடிந்தாற்போல் இருக்கும் கங்குகளை பாருங்கள்... அனைத்தும் முடிந்துவிட்டது என்று சிந்திக்க தோன்றும் நிலை. ஆனால் அதை நாம் ஊதி தூண்டும் போது பறந்து பரவும் சாம்பலுக்கு அடியிலே சிறியதாய் இன்னும் கண்சிமிட்டிகொண்டிருக்கும் அந்த நெருப்பு பக்கென்று பற்றி எறியும் அந்த நேரம் வரும்! அது தான் எதிர்நோக்கு! அதை தூண்டி எழுப்புவது நமது நம்பிக்கை... மாறாத மறையாத நம்பிக்கை. 

கிறிஸ்து இறந்த போது அனைத்தும் முடிந்துவிட்டதாய் தான் தோன்றியது. சீடர்களும், அப்போஸ்தலர்களும், பெண்டீரும் மரியன்னையும், இன்னும் அமைதியாய் தவித்திருந்தபோது... தூண்டிவிடப்பட்ட நெருப்பாய் கனன்றெழுந்த உயிர்த்த கிறிஸ்துவின் எதிர்நோக்கு இதுவே! 

நம் வாழ்விலும், துன்பங்களும், தோல்விகளும், தொய்வுகளும், திணறல்களும், அடுத்தடுத்து வந்தாலும், நம் உள்ளத்திலே இறைவனின் கொடை இன்னும் அணையா கங்குகளாய் இருப்பதை நாம் உணர்வோம்! ஆற்றலின் ஆவி, அன்பின் ஆவி, தன்னடக்கத்தின் ஆவி, வாழ்வோரின் இறைவன் நமக்கு தந்துள்ள கொடைகளை நாம் உணராவிட்டால் இறைவனை அறியாதவர்களாய், இறைவார்த்தை புரியாதவர்களாய், குறைகூறுவதிலும், புலம்புவதிலும், தேவையற்ற சிந்தனைகளிலும், அன்பற்ற உறவுகளிலும் நமது வாழ்வை வீணடித்துவிடுவோம்! 

இறைவனின் கொடைகளை உணர்வோம், நம் உள்ளத்தில் அவற்றை தூண்டி எழுப்புவோம்... நமது நம்பிக்கை நமக்கு எதிர்நோக்கு தரும்!

Wait-time Warriors!

Tuesday, 9th week in Ordinary Time

5th June, 2018: 2 Pet 3:11-15,17-18; Mk 12:13-17

Peter speaks to us about a waiting mode of living out life! We are here in this life and we are not permanent here. We are passing by and all of us are waiting for that day when the glory of God will be fully revealed! What kind of a waiting is it? An inactive, helpless and a clueless waiting? No.

I remember this scene from a movie, where a group of candidates are made to wait for a long time in the lounge before an interview for a job. Each one has his or her own reaction to it and they keep expressing it in various modes. There is one singled out among them (obviously the hero) who is patient, sensitive to others, compassionate, objective in his judgement, decent in his remarks and enduring in his perseverance. At a point of time one among the group stands up and declares that the interview is done and the candidate is selected. When asked he reveals that he was the Human Resource Consultant who were to interview them. It is clear who was selected!

Though just a story, it explains what Peter tries to impress upon us: yes we are waiting; but in the meanwhile let us live a life that is saintly, holy, just, godly, pure and true. Thus when the Lord comes we would be ready to be found worthy. This is also what Jesus calls: giving to Caesar what belongs to him and giving God what belongs to God. In other words, living our life as persons ever prepared, warriors ever girded, never to be caught unawares, never compromising and always on the right footing. 

A Christian life of virtues, or as St. Peter calls it today, a saintly life is not something that is done at an extraordinary moment, rather the dedication and earnestness with which every moment of our life is lived. There may be slight falls and slackening, but we are called to pull ourselves up and keep our head high, always focused as wait-time warriors!

ஜூன் 5: காத்திருக்கும் காவல் வீரர்களாய்

கடமை தவறாத காத்திருப்பு, கண்ணிமைக்காத பொறுப்பு 

2 பேதுரு 3:11-15,17-18; மாற் 12:13-17

காத்திருத்தலை குறித்து நமக்கு விளக்குகிறார் பேதுரு. நமது இருப்பிடம் இவ்வுலகு அன்று. நாம் இங்கு வெறும் வழிப்போக்கர்களே. தனது முழுமையான மகிமையில் இறைவன் வெளிப்படும் அந்த தருணத்திற்காக நாம் காத்திருக்கிறோம், என்று கூறுகிறார் பேதுரு. ஆனால் இது எப்படிப்பட்ட காத்திருப்பு? ஏதும் செய்யாது, கண்ணயர்ந்து கிடைக்கும் காத்திருப்பா? கிடையவே கிடையாது; இருக்கவே முடியாது!

சில மாதங்களுக்கு முன்பாக ஒரு காணொளியில் பார்த்த காட்சி ஒன்று நினைவுக்கு வருகிறது. அதில் ஒரு பெரிய கூட்டமாய் நேர்காணலுக்காக காத்திருக்கும் பட்டதாரிகளை காண்போம். பல மணி நேரமாய் காத்திருந்தும் அவர்களில் யாருமே நேர்காணலுக்கு அழைக்கப்படாததை கண்டு அவர்கள் சற்றே பொறுமை இழந்து தங்கள் எரிச்சலையும், ஏமாற்றத்தையும் பல விதங்களில் வெளிப்படுத்துவதையம், அவர்களில் ஒருவர் மட்டும் (கதாநாயகன் என்பதை சொல்லவே வேண்டாம்) பொறுமையோடும், அடுத்திருப்பவரில் அக்கறை உள்ளவராயும், தன் வார்த்தைகளில் கண்ணியமாயும், கனிவோடும், சிரித்த முகத்தோடும் இருப்பதை நம்மால் காணமுடியும். ஒரு நேரத்தில் அவர்களில் ஒருவர் எழுந்து நேர்காணல் முடிந்துவிட்டது என்றும், உரிய நபர் தேர்ந்தெடுக்கப்பட்டுவிட்டார் என்றும் அறிவிக்க அனைவரும் திகைத்தவண்ணமாய் காண்பர். அவரோ தான் தான் நேர்காணல் செய்ய வேண்டிய அலுவலர் என்றும் அவர்கள் மத்தியிலே அவர்களை அறியவே அமர்ந்திருந்ததாகவும் கூறுவார். 

இது வெறும் கதை ஏனென்றால் பேதுரு இன்று நமக்கு தரும் பாடத்திற்கு இது அழகானதொரு விளக்கமாகும். ஆம் நாம் காத்திருக்கிறோம்... ஆனால் காத்திருக்கும் இந்த தருணங்கள் மிக அழகானவை, அவசியமானவை. இவற்றை புனிதமாய், அன்பாய், தூய்மையாய், உண்மையாய், நியாயமாய், இறையுணர்வோடு வாழ்வோம் என்கிறார் பேதுரு. அதை தான் கிறிஸ்து, செசாருக்கு உரியதை செசாருக்கும், இறைவனுக்கு உரியதை இறைவனுக்கும் தாருங்கள் என்று கூறுகிறார். அதாவது - என் கடமை என்னவென்று உணர்ந்து அதை அடுத்தவரின் கண்களுக்காக அல்ல, எனது வாழ்வை முழுமையாய் வாழ்ந்திட, உண்மையாய் வாழ்ந்திட, தூய்மையாய் வாழ்ந்திட நான் செய்து முடிக்கும் போது, நான் காத்திருந்தாலும் தயாராய் இருக்கிறேன்!

காத்திருக்கும் காவலர்கள் கண்ணயர முடியுமா? சற்று கண்ணயர்ந்து விட்டால் காத்திருந்ததற்கே பொருளில்லாமல் போய்விடும் அல்லவா? நமது கிறிஸ்தவ வாழ்வும் அப்படியே அமைத்தல் வேண்டும். கடமை தவறாத காத்திருப்பு, கண்ணிமைக்காத பொறுப்பு... இதுவே நம்மை காத்திருக்கும் காவல் வீரர்களாக்கும், கிறிஸ்துவின் உண்மை சீடர்களாக்கும். 

Grow or Get Stuck!

Monday, 9th week in Ordinary Time

2 Pet 1:2-7; Mk 12:1-12

If you are truly a son or a daughter of God, Grow Up, says Jesus! If you do not grow up you get stuck! 

We see Jesus trying his best to challenge the Jews who are stuck to their childish obstinacy and blind legalism. They are not able to grow up to see the truth that is so obvious right in front of their eyes! At times, we may be in that state too - not that we do not understand what God wants from us, but we refuse to understand, we refuse to see, we refuse to grow up, getting stuck to what we wish and what we are convenient with. 

Peter today suggests to us eight stages of Growth, like ingredients to add, as we make of ourselves truly Persons of God. The itinerary is clear, yet difficult; well laid out yet challenging. Here are the eight: Faith, with which we begin our journey with the Lord; Goodness with which we show to ourselves and to the world the faith we have within us; Understanding with which we come to realise what is expected of us at a given instance in our lives; Self Control which helps us go beyond our wish and desire to see what is right and what is true; Patience with which we endure the struggles involved in choosing what is right; Devotion with which we do not mind any amount of suffering or struggle for the sake of the One who shows us what is right; Kindness with which we bear witness to the One to whom we are devoted; and finally, Love which is the very nature and form of the one whom we wish to reach in this life-journey!

In short, our life is one long journey. As the year passes by, just as seasons progress, we are called to keep moving, keep growing!

ஜூன் 4: வளர்ந்திடுவோம்...

வளர்ச்சியே வாழ்வின் அறிகுறி 

2 பேதுரு 1:2-7; மாற் 12:1-12

உண்மையிலே இறைத்தன்மையுடையவரானால், வளர்ந்திடுங்கள் - என்று சவால்  விடுகிறார் கிறிஸ்து. வளராவிட்டால் வாழ்வின் அறிகுறியே அற்றுப்போகும். 

தங்கள் கண்முன்பாக நடந்துகொண்டிருந்த அனைத்தையும் கண்டும் இறைவனை அறிந்துகொள்ளாது இருந்தனர் கிறிஸ்துவின் காலத்து மக்கள். அவர்களுக்கு உண்மையை உணர்த்த கிறிஸ்து படாத பாடு படுகிறார் என்றே சொல்லலாம் - அவர்களுக்கு புரியாமலில்லை, அவர்கள் புரிந்துகொள்ள விரும்பவில்லை; அவர்களுக்கு தெரியாமலில்லை அதை உணர்ந்துகொள்ள அவர்களுக்கு மனது இல்லை. இதையே கிறிஸ்து சாடுகிறார்.

அவ்வாறு இல்லாமல் நம் வாழ்விலே இறைத்தன்மை என்பதை புரிந்துகொண்டு வாழ, வளர பேதுரு நமக்கு ஒரு படிநிலை திட்டத்தை வகுத்து கொடுக்கிறார். இந்த திட்டம் எட்டு படிகளை கொண்டுள்ளது - எளிமையானது ஆனால் சவால் மிக்கது; தெளிவாய் புரியக்கூடியது ஆனால் கடினமானது. 

முதல் படி நம்பிக்கை - இதுவே இறைவனோடு நமது பயணத்தின் தொடக்கப்புள்ளி. இரண்டாவது, நற்பண்பு - இதன் மூலமே நமக்குள் குடிகொண்டுள்ள நம்பிக்கையை நாம் வெளிக்காட்ட முடியும். மூன்றாவது, அறிவு - இதுவே நம்மிடமிருந்து என்ன எதிர்பார்க்கப்படுகிறது என்பதை நாம் உணர்ந்து செயல்பட நமக்கு உதவுகிறது. நான்காவது, தன்னடக்கம் - நம் விருப்பு வெறுப்புக்கள், ஆசாபாசங்கள் அனைத்தையும் தாண்டி உண்மையையும், சரியானதையும் தேர்ந்துகொள்ள நமக்கு உதவுவது இதுவே. ஐந்தாவது, மனவுறுதி, உண்மையானதையும் சரியானதையும் தேர்ந்துகொள்ளும்போது ஏற்படும் இன்னல்களையும் இடறல்களையும் தாங்கும் ஆற்றலை தருவது இதுவே. ஆறாவது, இறைப்பற்று - இதுவே அனைத்து இன்னல்களையும் பொறுத்துக்கொண்டு சரியானதை இறைவனுக்காக தேர்ந்துகொள்ளும் மனதை நமக்கு தருகிறது. ஏழாவது சகோதர நேயம் - நாம் யாருக்காக யாரோடு பயணிக்கிறோம் என்பதை சாட்சியமாய் வெளிப்படுத்துவது இதுவே. இறுதியாக, அன்பு - நம்மை அழைத்தவரின் இயல்பும், உருவும் இதுவே!

சுருங்கக்கூறின், நமது வாழ்வு என்பது ஒரு பயணம், ஒரு வளர்ச்சி... ஆண்டின் காலங்கள் மாறி உரிய காலத்தில் உரிய மாற்றங்கள் ஏற்படுவதை போல நமது வாழ்விலும் வளர்ச்சி காணப்பட வேண்டும். இல்லையேல் நமது வாழ்வே கேள்விக்குறியாகிவிடும். வாழ்வோம், வளர்வோம்!

WITH US, IN US AND FOR US

Covenantal Presence, Corporal Union and Concrete Commitment 

The Solemnity of Corpus Christi: 2nd June, 2018

Exo 24:3-8; Heb 9: 11-15; Mk 14: 12-16, 22-26

The Feast of Corpus Christi reminds us of a drastic decision that God made in our favour -  With Us, In Us and For Us - God loved us, God came amidst us and God came to stay within us! The solemnity that we celebrate today explicates this decision inspiring in us a similar attitude as we live our daily life.

WITH US: That decision to stay with us is a Covenantal Presence... As St. Paul writes to Timothy, even if we are unfaithful, God is faithful forever. God has made a covenant with us throughout the ages, and finally God had sealed it and convalidated it wtih the very body and blood of God's Son, and that covenant is, to be with us forever! The Covenantal Presence of God with us is the highest form of security and protection that we can feel. It gives us the sense of sonship and daughterhood. The call here is to be WITH OTHERS, specially when someone suffers, struggles, grapples and fights to live meaningfully.

IN US: The decision to stay with us is a desire for Corporal Union... Our Lord and Saviour becomes one with us, unites in our bodily existence too, enabling us to say, It is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me. It is a decision to be in us forever. It is a decision to purify us from within us, it is a decision to infuse sanctity within us, it is a decision to make us whole from within. The call here is to be IN THE LIVES OF THE OTHERS. Just like the Son of God becomes one with us, we are called to empathise with others with whom we share this common home: the World. It is crucial with whom we side: with those who really need empowerment or with the dominant rows.

FOR US: The decision to stay with us is a Concrete Commitment that the Lord take on our behalf; that we may be saved, sanctified and brought back to God. It is a call that Christ gives us to offer ourselves entirely to God, in every thing we are and everything we do. This is my body; this is my blood which shall be shed for you, says the Lord. It is a concrete commitment the Lord makes to be forever for us. And the call is obvious: to GIVE OF OURSELVES FOR THE OTHERS. A truly Christian life is a life that is lived for Others, for it is in living for others that we live for God. The Others here would begin from one's one immediate family, the faith community, the universal brothers and sisters, specially those who are weak and oppressed. 

The Body and Blood of Christ that we celebrate is a living reminder of the extraordinary love that God has to be WITH us, IN us and FOR us! Let us heed the invitation and become persons with others, in others, for others!
