Revive your decision to reform hardened hearts

Thursday, 3rd week in Lent: 8th Mar, 2018

Jer 7: 23-28; Lk 11: 14-23

The world today is living a life of indifference,  an inhuman and incredible indifference, so cold and selfish. Nothing matters to anyone until it hurts him or her personally. Be it individuals, groups, institutions or even local churches... we are overwhelmed by concerns of security in the face of increasing injustice in the larger society. 

The Word today invites us to listen to the Lord speaking, speaking through the cries of the innocent victims - the cries of the poor,  the tears of those who have lost their dear ones to violence and crime,  the miseries of those who have never understood the meaning of 'sufficient', those who are left to live in the brink of death day in and day out!

Let's beware of branding the poor as lazy,  citing fate for the miseries of some in stark contrast to the filthy affluence of the others,  brushing aside the sufferings of those who are victims of injustice saying we have nothing to do with it. ..when we do all these we are closing our eyes,  shutting our ears and hardening our hearts against God! 

With hardened hearts we will only be against God, scattering what God wants to gather. With hardened hearts we will only push God into the dark and the dark forces right unto the fore! Let us revive our decision to reform our hardened hearts, to transform them into hearts truly of flesh and blood!

மார்ச் 8: இதயங்கள் கணியட்டும், இறையாட்சி மலரட்டும்

அடுத்தவரின் குரலில் இறைவனின் குரலுக்கு செவிமடுப்போம்  

இன்றைய உலகம் இதயமற்ற உலகமாய் மாறிக்கொண்டே வருகிறது... தன்னலத்தின் உச்சத்தை என்பிக்கும் சில வெளிப்பாடுகளை நாம் கண்டுகொண்டு தான் இருக்கிறோம். யாருடடைய அழிவோ அழுகுரலோ எவ்விதத்திலும் பாதிக்காத நிலையில், தனக்கென்றால் மட்டும் தாண்டவமாடும் தன்னலப்போக்கு தனி மனிதர்களிடமும், சமூக குழுக்களிடமும் ஏன் சில சமயங்களில் திருச்சபைகளிடமும் கூட காணப்படும் போது வியப்பதா நொந்துக்கொள்வதா என்று தெரியவில்லை. 

இன்றைய இறைவார்த்தை நம்மை செவிமடுக்க அழைக்கின்றது... இறைவனின் குரலுக்கு, குற்றமற்ற நிலையிலும் துன்பத்திற்கு உள்ளாவோர் வழியாய் எழும் இறைவனின் குரலுக்கு, உண்மையாலும் உழைப்பாலும் ஓடாய் தேய்ந்தவர்கள் இன்னும் சமுதாயத்தால் சுரண்டப்படும் போது எழும் இறைவனின் குரலுக்கு, எந்த பாவமும் அறியாதவர்கள் அடுத்தவரின் தன்னலத்தாலும் பேயாசையாலும் (எழுத்து பிழையல்ல) நாதியற்று நடுத்தெருவில் நிற்கும் போது எழும் இறைவனின் குரலுக்கு செவிமடுக்க அழைக்கின்றது. 

அடுத்தவரின் வலியை உணரவில்லை என்றாலும் அவர்களை ஏளனம் செய்யாமலிருப்போம்; உதவவில்லை என்றாலும் உதாசீனப்படுத்தாமல் இருப்போம்; அநீதிகளை எதிர்த்து கேட்கவில்லை என்றாலும் அவற்றிற்கு துணை போகாமலிருப்போம்... இல்லையேல் இறைவனின் குரலை கேட்க மறுத்தவர்கள் ஆவோம், அவரை புறக்கணித்தவர்கள் ஆவோம், அவரையே ஏளனம் செய்தவர்கள் ஆவோம், அவர் பெயருக்கு களங்கம் விளைவித்தவர்கள் ஆவோம், அவர் கூட்டி சேர்க்க நினைத்ததை சிதறடித்தவர்கள் ஆவோம்!

நம் இதயங்களை கணியச்செய்வோம், நம் சகோதர சகோதரிகளை உண்மையாய் அன்பு செய்வோம்... இறைவனின் குரலுக்கு செவிமடுப்போம். இதயங்கள் கணியட்டும், இறைவனின் ஆட்சி மலரட்டும். 

மார்ச் 7: நம்பிக்கையில் வேரூன்ற

கட்டளைகளும் கிறிஸ்தவ வாழ்வும்...

சட்டத்திற்கும் சட்டவல்லுனர்களுக்கும் பரிசேயருக்கும் எதிராக எவ்வளவு தான் பேசியிருந்தாலும், கிறிஸ்து திருச்சட்டத்தை எதிர்த்தவர் அல்லர்... ஆனால் அந்த சட்டத்திற்கு ஆழமான அர்த்தம் ஒன்று உண்டு, அதை தவறவிட்டு விட கூடாது என்பதில் கண்ணும் கருத்துமாய் இருந்தவர்! 

திருச்சட்டம் என்பது, அல்லது நம் பொதுவான பேச்சு வழக்கில் கூறினால், கட்டளைகள் என்பது வெளிப்படுத்தப்பட்ட இறைசித்தமாகும். இறைவனின் சித்தத்தை செய்ய நாம் விரும்புகிறோம், முயற்சிக்கிறோம்... அனால் அதை எப்படி அறிந்து கொள்வது என்பது நம் அனைவருக்குமே இருக்கின்ற ஒரு கேள்வி. அவ்வாறிருக்க இறைவனின் சித்தம் நமக்கு தெளிவாக எடுத்து கூறப்பட்டுள்ள ஒரு வழி, கட்டளைகளாகும். என்னை அனுப்பினவரின் சித்தத்தை செய்வதே எனக்கு உணவு என்று கூறிய கிறிஸ்து இதை எதிர்ப்பாரா? 

அவர் எதிர்த்ததெல்லாம் கண்மூடித்தனமாக எதை செயகின்றோம், ஏன் செய்கின்றோம் என்ற புரிதலே இல்லாமல் சிலவற்றை செய்தே ஆகவேண்டும் என்று சாதிப்பதையே. கட்டளைகளுக்கும் நமது நம்பிக்கைக்கும் உள்ள தொடர்பே நமது மனதில் உள்ள புரிதல் தான் என்பதை நாம் உணர வேண்டும். 

இறைவனுக்காக எதை செய்தாலும் அதை உள்மனபுரிதலோடு, ஆழ்மன நிலைப்பாடோடு செய்யும் போதே அது உண்மையான நம்பிக்கையின் வெளிப்பாடாகின்றது. கட்டளைகளை கடைபிடிப்பது நமது நம்பிக்கையில் வேரூன்ற செய்ய வேண்டும், நம்பிக்கையை மறந்து செயல்களில் மட்டுமே நின்றுவிடச்  செய்யக்கூடாது. 

இதை உணர்ந்து ஒவ்வொரு நாளும் இறையுறவில் புரிதலுடன் வளர்வோம், நம்பிக்கையில் வேரூன்றுவோம்.

Revive your rootedness to the Foundation

Wednesday, 3rd week in Lent: 7th Mar, 2018

Dt 4: 1,5-9; Mt 5: 17-19

The Commandments were nothing but the expressed wish of the Lord who brought the people up to their status of God's people. The Old Testament people felt assured that when they walked in the path of the commandments, they were on the right track. At times this assurance and the anxiety to hold on to this assurance made them even highly legalistic. 

Though Jesus stood tooth and nail against legalism, he too respected the commands of the Lord and taught his disciples how to make it humanly possible to abide by those commandments. The expressed wish of the Father, was something sacred and holy to Jesus and he declared that they are never changing, eternal and foundational for our faith. 

Our faith, that is, our rapport with the Lord, our faithfulness to God has to be based firmly on something and Jesus offers the right solution: the Word of the Lord. The Word which contains the expressed wish of the Father, the word that will never perish, is the Rock foundation on which our faith has to be established! 

Whoever obeys and teaches these, will be called greatest in the kingdom of heaven. Let us revive our rootedness to our foundations!

மார்ச் 6: அவரது திருமுன் வாழக்கூடியவராய்...

அவரோடு அவரைப்போன்றே வாழப் பயில்வோம். 

என்னை அவரது உருவிலும் சாயலிலும் படைத்த இறைவனின் பிள்ளை நான் என்ற அடையாளத்தோடு தான் நான் வாழ்கின்றேனா, என்ற ஆழமான கேள்வியை எழுப்புகிறது இன்றைய இறைவார்த்தை. அவரது உருவின் பல பரிமானங்களில் சிறப்பான ஒன்று மன்னிப்பு. இறைவன் நமது பாவங்களை மன்னிக்காவிடில் நாம் இம்மண்ணில் வாழ்வதே இயலாது என்று நம் அனைவருக்குமே தெரியும். மன்னிக்கும்  இறைவனின் உண்மை மக்களாக நாம் வாழவேண்டுமானால், நாமும் அவரது சாயலை தாங்கியவர்களாக, மன்னிக்க வேண்டும். 

நாம் மன்னிக்க மறுக்கும் போது நமது உண்மை அடையாளத்தை உணர மறக்கின்றோம், மறுக்கின்றோம். மன்னிக்கப்பட்டவர்களாய் மன்னிக்க முன்வரும் போதே மன்னிக்கும் இறைவனின் மக்களாகின்றோம். ஏதோ ஒரு சில முறைகள் அல்ல, தெரிந்த முகங்களை மட்டுமல்ல, எல்லா முறைகளும், எல்லா மனிதர்களையும், எல்லா சூழல்களிலும் மன்னிக்க முன்வருவதே இறைமக்கள் பண்பு. 

இன்று நம்மை சுற்றி பழிக்கூறுவோரும், பழித்துரைப்போரும், பிழைக்காண்போரும் அதிகரித்துவரும் நிலையிலே, நமது நிலைப்பாடு என்னவாக இருக்கப்போகிறது என்று நாம் சிந்திக்க அழைக்கப்பட்டுள்ளோம். பாடம் கற்பிக்க துடிக்கின்றோமா? பழி வாங்க நினைக்கின்றோமா? அவர்கள் அழிவதை காண உளமார ஆசிக்கின்றோமா? கடவுளின் மக்கள் என்றால், அவர்களை மன்னிப்போம், அவர்களுக்காக செபிப்போம்... இதுவே கடவுளின் சாயல்!

இன்று நாம் தியானிக்கும் உவமையில் வரும் மனிதன் தன் தலைவன் முன்னிலையில் வாழும் தகுதியை கூட இழந்துவிடுகிறான், இருட்டறைக்கு தள்ளப்படுகின்றான். இறைவனின் முன்னிலையில் வாழக்கூடியவராய், அவரோடே அவரைப்போன்றே வாழப் பயில்வோம்!

Revive your desire to remain God's favoured ones!

Tuesday, 3rd week in Lent : 6th Mar, 2018

Dan 3: 25, 34-43; Mt 18: 21-35

The Word today invites us to understand the figure of the Lord as forgiving. The Lord gives and forgives;  if not,  we would die and perish. When the Lord offered us the greatest of all gifts,  God's own image and likeness,  God gave us this very nature that God beholds. We were made like God,  little less than the angels. God forgives and so we are called to forgive. 

Yes, if we consider ourselves truly God's children, it is our nature to forgive too. When we do not forgive we are negating our very nature; we become alien to ourselves,  we turn not only ungodly but even inhuman! 

Let us realise the image we bear and live up to that image! Let us forgive,  not just a few times or just when it is convenient but all the time and amidst all tribulations. Seems a needed message for the present times! 

We see numerous persons and groups of persons plotting and scheming things against the innocent, the God fearing and good willed. What would our response be? Teaching them a lesson? Planning an action tit for tat? Praying for their destruction and wishing their downfall? A true child of God will forgive them and pray for them, however bad the situation created may be! That is what we are taught. 

In the parable narrated today, the man ends up in the dungeon because he lost his identity as "the favoured one" in the eyes of his master. Let us never lose that identity. Let us revive our desire to remain God's favoured ones!

மார்ச் 5: விளிம்புகளை தேடிச்செல்வோம்

விளிம்புகளற்ற மனிதமே இறையாட்சி!

விளிம்புகளை தேடிச்செல்வோம் - இதுவே திருத்தந்தை பிரான்சிஸ் திருச்சபைக்கு அளித்த முதல் அறிவுரை என்பது நமக்கு நினைவிருக்கலாம். இவ்வழைப்பிற்கான காரணமென்ன, நீங்கள் சிந்தித்ததுண்டா? பலமுறை இந்த சிந்தனை என் மனதை துளைத்ததுண்டு. இன்றைய இறைவார்த்தை அதற்கான ஒரு தீர்வை நமக்கு அளிப்பதாகவே நான் காண்கிறேன். 

நாம் விளிம்புகளை தேடிச்செல்லவேண்டும் ஏனெனில் இவ்வுலகை படைத்த இறைவனை பொறுத்தவரை விளிம்புகள் என்பதே இல்லை. நாம் தான் அவற்றை ஏற்படுத்தி வைத்துள்ளோம். இறைவனை பொறுத்தவரை அனைவருமே மையத்தில் தான் உள்ளோம்; அவரது உள்ளத்தின் ஆழத்தில் தான் உள்ளோம். எல்லா இடங்களும் அவரது இருத்தலால் நிறைந்தே உள்ளது. எல்லா நிகழ்வுகளும் அவரது இருத்தலிலேயே நடக்கிறது. அப்படி இருக்க விளிம்புகள் ஏது? 

அந்நியர்கள் என்றும், வேற்றினத்தார் என்றும், நம்மை சாராதவர்கள் என்றும் நாம் தான் பிரித்து வைத்துள்ளோமே தவிர இறைவனின் திருமுன்னே ஒவ்வொரு மனிதரும் இறைவனின் பிள்ளையே, மானுடத்தின் மையமே! அது சாரிபாத்தின் கைம்பெண்ணாக இருக்கட்டும் அல்லது சிரியா நாட்டின் நாமானாக இருக்கட்டும்... யாராகிலும் அவர் இறைவனின் பார்வையில் மையமாகவே தென்பட்டார் என்பது தான் உண்மை.  விளிம்பு என்று நாமாக ஒதுக்கி வைத்துள்ள நிலைகளை தேடிச்செல்ல நாம் அழைக்கப்படுகிறோம். அவற்றை அகற்ற... விளிம்புகளை ஏற்படுத்தும் மனநிலையை அகற்ற, விளிம்பு நிலை மக்களை உருவாக்கும் அமைப்புகளை அகற்ற, விளிம்பு நிலை சமுதாயத்தை உருவாக்கும் அரசியல் பொருளாதார போக்குகளை அகற்ற...ஏனெனில் விளிம்புகளற்ற மனிதமே இறையாட்சியின் சமூகமாகும்.

யாருமற்றவர்கள் என்று தங்களையே கருதிக்கொள்வோரை, தன்மதிப்பற்ற வாழ்க்கைக்கு தள்ளப்பட்டோரை, இறைவனின் உண்மை அன்பை சுவைக்க மறந்தோரை, வாழ்க்கையின் உண்மை பொருளை உணர இயலாதோரை தேடிச்செல்வோம்... விளிம்புகளற்ற மனிதம் படைப்போம்.

Revive your commitment to reach out!

Monday, 3rd week in Lent: 5th Mar, 2018

2 Kgs5:1-15; Lk 4: 24-30

"Go to the existential peripheries", invited the Holy Father as one of his first recommendations to the Church today! But why the insistence? One reason I find very close is, for God there are no peripheries! For God every one is "chosen" in his or her own way; every place is a "chosen place" in its own manner! For God each and every person is at the centre of existence, no one at the existential peripheries, where we have pushed them to. 

We may brand someone 'strange', 'alien', 'outcast', 'unacceptable' or 'not-worth-relating to'... but let us understand they are at the center of the universe that God beholds. Be it the widow of Zarephath or Naman from Aram, they were under God's care! Reaching out is a marked call of Lent, to reach out to the other in need! 

Reaching out means expressing God to the others, being God to those who need, making God felt by those who are broken. When we reach out to the so called marginalised, the so called persons in the periphery, we are actually in the footsteps of the Lord who chose to be with them, chose to be one among them. 

Let us reach out today, atleast to one person whom we have not considered within our circles of relationships. Let us revive our commitment to reach out to the existential peripheries!

Choose Righteousness! Choose God!

Righteousness that Jesus teaches...

3rd Sunday in Lent: 4th March, 2018

Exo 20: 1-17; 1 Cor 1: 22-25;Jn 2: 13-25

How we wish the Lord entered today Syria and whipped all those mongering for power and restored peace with thunder and lightning!

How we wish the Lord took those heartless corporates of the world by their ears and whacked them for their insensitivity to the poor and the neglected and pulled all their money out and distributed them to those who have none!

How we wish the Lord grabbed those crooked politicians by their throats and thwarted all their blatant lies and hidden agenda!

How we wish... the list can go on and on. This what anyone who is tired of what is happening around today would imagine when he or she reads the Gospel today! Jesus swings like a super hero, doing what everyone would wish it is done. But almost immediately the Word comes up with a correction - but that is not always! The ways of God is not always whipping it out...it is the way of the Cross, the sign of "the foolishness of God", says St. Paul today. Where does this foolishness come from? From the fact that God loves humanity beyond all the limitations and defects found in it. True love not only does not hurt, but also takes the hurt on itself without any complains.

God seeks righteousness not vengeance. Righteousness is being right, doing right, living right, but not merely that. There are people today who live right, do right, be right because of various reasons: not to get into trouble, to be applauded by the onlookers, to gain some kind of a remuneration...these are just a few of the numerous reasons there could be. But these will never amount so much to righteousness, as to legalism and levels of self seeking. Recall your mindset when you do something right, do something that has to be done, when you carry out a duty which you are bound to - it could be anything from a simple obedience to traffic rules to duly paying your taxes to the government. But that is not the Righteousness that Jesus teaches.

Righteousness is taking orders only from God. 
Righteousness that Jesus teaches is an absolute obedience to God. The laws that God gave the people of Israel, were the directions for a life that God expected them to live amidst the other people. God's laws are not modes in which God controls us but the way in which God wishes to distinguish us as God's people! When I do good because God wants me to do it, when I be right because God wants me be so, I am being righteous!

Righteousness is taking up your Cross.
Righteousness that Jesus teaches is taught from the Cross. Jesus had to pay the price for having been righteous. Taking up the whip does not work always! At times you are a powerless minority when you live righteous - live it anyway!  At times you are judged a failure when you stand up for righteousness - stand up for it anyway! At times you are taken for granted and trampled on ground for upholding what is right - hold on to it anyway! This is the foolishness of the Cross that Paul teaches us - it is that logic against all strategies of the unrighteous.

Righteousness is taking on the world.
Righteousness that Jesus teaches is a battle, a battle of love! There is no losing in this. You love God absolutely, love God's people absolutely, love God's purposes absolutely...and your opponent that is the world of selfishness and power will go all out to destroy you. Are you ready for that battle - It may appear to be a losing battle but you will never lose when you love! The Cross was originally a sign of curse, failure and death but today it is a symbol of hope, love and resurrection! Are you ready to take on the world, with your righteousness?

Choose Righteousness, Choose God!

Behold God's Love

2nd Sunday of Lent: 25th February, 2018

Gen 22: 1-2, 9a,10-13, 15-18; Rom 8: 31b-34; Mk 9: 2-10

God's love is in demonstration today and we are invited to behold that true, genuine, authentic and matchless love in the name of Jesus our Lord and Saviour!

What does the call to "behold" mean? It means to observe, understand and accept it in all its fullness. We would do well to do it today, with the help of the readings.

Observe that God's love is a love that gives: Are we ready to give? Yes...a bit of our changes in the pocket, a few of our currencies in the wallet, some of us a little more...may be our enjoyment of a movie or two during the season of lent, or our stylish make overs or things of that sort! But Observe, calls the second reading today: observe the love that God has for us. Because that love, God gave, God gave Godself; God's own son, the only Son, the Word who was One with God. 

Understand that God's love is a love that gives all: God's love is not merely a love that gives but a love that gives everything, gives all that God is...The Gospel reminds us of that: Jesus shows us and his disciples, what he has given up for the sake of the love he had for us! The first moment we find it, we feel like holding on to it. The apostles wanted to remain there...Jesus reminds us: "No... you call is to give, to give up, to give all, to give of yourself; that is my love!"

Accept God's love into your heart: To behold God's love would finally mean accept God's love into our hearts, fill our hearts with God's love! Abraham was ready even to give up his son, because he was filled with God's love; by then he had experienced what God's love means and what change it can bring about in his life. That is why he did not consider anything on par with God's love. In our life to, if we believe and behold God's love, that has to be seen. It has to be seen in our lives, our day to day relationships, our choices and our responses to events. To behold God's love is to be held by God's love and hold out that love to all whom we come across! 

May our lives be transformed, by God's love into God's love!
