UNITY OCTAVE 2018 - DAY 5

22nd January, 2018

Hark, the cry of my poor people 

from far and wide in the Land! 

Readings: 

Deuteronomy 1:19-35   The Lord God goes before you and carried you

Psalm 145:9-20             The Lord upholds all who are falling

James 1:9-11                The rich will disappear like a flower in the field

Luke 18:35-43               Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!

Happening today: 

Third World economies have traditionally been based on the production of raw materials for the European market and so have never been self-sustaining. As a consequence, borrowing on the international market became important for development. The requirements of such borrowing impose a reduction of spending on transport, education, health and other public services, which impacts most severely on the poor. The Church as a whole should address the current debt crisis in the third world regions and through their international networks to come to the aid of the poor.

Reflection:

We can imagine the noise of the crowd as Jesus enters Jericho. Many voices shout down the cry of the blind beggar. He is a distraction and an embarrassment. But through all this tumult Jesus hears the blind man’s voice, just as God always hears the cries of the poor in the Hebrew Scriptures. The Lord who upholds the falling not only hears, he responds. Thereby, the beggar’s life is radically transformed.

The disunity of Christians can become part of the world’s tumult and chaos. Like the arguing voices outside Jericho, our divisions can drown out the cry of the poor. However, when we are united we become more fully Christ’s presence in the world, better able to hear, listen and respond. Rather than increasing the volume of discord, we are able to truly listen and so discern the voices that most need to be heard.

Prayer

Loving God,
you lift up the poor and distressed
and restore their dignity.
Hear now our cries for the poor of our world,
restore their hope and lift them up,
that all your people may be one.
This we pray in Jesus name.

Amen.

The right hand of God
is lifting in our land,
lifting the fallen one by one;
each one is known by name,
and rescued now from shame,
by the lifting of the right hand of God.

அழைக்கும் இறைவன் - உன் பதில்?

இறைவன் அழைக்கிறார்... என்ன சொல்ல போகிறாய்? 

திடீரென உங்கள் கைப்பேசியில் GOD CALLING...என்று  வருகிறது என்று வைத்துக்கொள்ளவோம்... கடவுள் உங்களை அழைக்கிறார்... என்ன பதில் அளிப்பீர்கள்.

வேண்டாம் என்று அழைப்பை துண்டித்து விடலாம். இன்று பலரும் அதை தான் செய்து கொண்டு இருக்கிறார்கள். வேண்டாம் என்று கடவுளை தள்ளி வைத்து இருக்கிறார்கள். நமது முடிவுகள், நாம் தேர்ந்துகொள்ளும் உண்மைகள், நாம் தரும் முக்கியத்துவங்கள் இவைகளில் எல்லாம் உலகம் இன்று இறைவனின் அழைப்பை நிராகரித்தே வருகிறது.

இதற்கு நான் பிறகு பதிலளிப்பேன் என்று தள்ளி வைக்கலாம். ஆனால் இறைவன் கூறுவது அது அல்ல... நேரம் நெருங்கிவிட்டது, இனியும் உங்கள் பதிலை நீங்கள் தள்ளி போட இயலாது... இன்றே இப்போதே உங்கள் தேர்வு என்ன என்பதை தெரளிவு படுத்துங்கள், என்கிறார். சீடர்களை பாருங்கள்... அவர் அழைத்தார் அவர்களும் உடனே அவரை பின் தொடர்ந்தனர் என்கிறது நற்செய்தி.

இறைவனிடம் நமது மாற்றுக் கருத்தை தெரிவிக்கலாம். இறைவனிடமே மாற்று கருத்தா என்று நாம் சிந்தித்ததாலும் இதை தான் பலமுறை செய்கிறோம்... நம் மனதிலே ஒன்றை நினைத்துக்கொண்டு அப்படியே நடக்க வேண்டும் என இறைவனை நிர்பந்திக்கின்றோம். யோனா அதையே முயற்சித்தார். அனால் இறைவன் சற்றே கடினமான முறையிலானாலும், அவருக்கு சரியானது எது என்று உணர்த்தினார். அப்படி இறைவன் உணர்த்தும் படியாக தன்னை இறைவன் கைகளில் சரணாக்கினார் யோனா...அதுவே அவரது சீடத்துவத்தை எண்பிக்கிறது.

இறுதியாக...உண்மையிலேயே நாம் செய்ய வேண்டியது...சீடர்களை போல அழைக்கும் இறைவனின் குரல் கேட்டு உடனே அவருக்கு பதில் அளிப்பதே ஆகும். இதோ இறைவா உம திருவுளம் நிறைவேற்ற நான் வருகின்றேன் என்று எழுந்து நடந்திட வேண்டும் என்று இறைவார்த்தை நமக்கு பணிக்கின்றது. இறைவனின் அழைப்பை ஏற்போம், பேசும் இறைவா அடியேன் கேட்கின்றேன் என்று இன்றே பதிலளிப்போம். 

GOD... CALLING - Respond Now!

3rd Sunday in Ordinary Time

Jon 3: 1-5, 10; 1 Cor 7: 29-31; Mk 1:4-20

Just imagine you get a call on your mobile today: GOD CALLING...What would be your response! In fact, the readings speak to us of a reality as such. The Lord calls each of us today; right now! 

We can DECLINE it...swiping the red button! I have been given the freedom to say "yes" to God. I can use the same freedom to say NO. And that is the fact - many in the world today are continuously saying that no to the Lord. In the choices that they make, in the attitudes that the take, in the decisions they abide by, even by the silence that many observe in the face of things that revolt, militate against God, many are saying no! They are declining that call that God gives on a daily basis.

We can set a REMINDER to it...saying, 'may be, I will decide on it later!'. But the Lord says, "The times has come... you cannot postpone it any longer'. We cannot postpone it, we cannot have it our way! Today, we need to respond to the Lord. Today, we need to take up the cause of the Lord. If I wait for a tomorrow, the difference that I have to make will no more be relevant. If the Lord calls me today, to do something, to say something, to take upto something, there is a particular purpose for it. I cannot postpone it. The disciples did not postpone it, they left everything and instantly followed Christ.

We can send a MESSAGE to the Lord... saying, 'you see, it is not convenient right now or it is not convenient the way you want it' - oh, how presumptuous of us! Jonah tried it. He had difference of opinion from the Lord. He resisted. He wanted his way. We know the Lord gave him an unforgettable experience to realise, after all the Lord had it right! The Lord is always right, we do not understand things that happen in our life. At least, Jonah has the openness to throw himself into the hands of God and allow God to take him where God wanted. 

The ideal is to ACCEPT the call! Yes Lord, Here I come to do your will. Take me O Lord and use me as you wish! I shall be a humble instrument in your hand, do great things for the world. I shall be a simple harp in your hand, make my life a music. I shall be a little pencil in your hands, go ahead and work your masterpiece! Yes, Speak O Lord, I am listening!

UNITY OCTAVE 2018 - DAY 4

Hope and Healing 

Readings: 

Isaiah 9:2-7a          His authority shall grow continually, and there shall be endless peace

Psalm 34:1-14        Seek peace, and pursue it

Revelation 7:13-17   God will wipe away every tear from their eyes

John 14:25-27          Peace I leave with you

Happening today: All over the world today, violence is a problem to which the churches are called to respond. There is an alarmingly high rate of hatred, much of which stems from domestic abuse, gang warfares, religious fundamentalism, economic manipulation and other forms of criminality. There is also a rising rate of self-harm and suicide in various parts of the world. Can the Christian soul today rise to promise peace to the world?

Reflection

The kingdom which God promised, the kingdom which Jesus proclaimed and made manifest in his ministry, is a kingdom of righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit. What does this Good News mean for those trapped in the darkness of violence? In the prophet’s vision, light shone on those who lived in a land of deep darkness. But how can Christians bring the light of Jesus to those living in the darkness of domestic and gang violence? What sense of hope can Christians offer? It is a sad reality that division among Christians is a counter-sign, which hampers the communication of hope.

However, the quest for peace and reconciliation between the different churches and confessions is the opposite of that. When Christians strive for unity in a world of conflict, they offer the world a sign of reconciliation. Christians who refuse to enter a logic of privilege and status, who refuse to demean others and their communities, give witness to the peace of God’s kingdom, where the Lamb guides the saints to springs of the water of life. This is a peace the world needs, and one which brings healing and comfort to those afflicted by violence.

Prayer

God of all comfort and hope,
your resurrection defeated the violence of the cross. 
As your people,
may we be a visible sign
that the violence of the world will be overcome. 
This we pray in the name of our risen Lord. 

Amen.

The right hand of God
is pointing in our land,
pointing the way we must go;
so clouded is the way,
so easily we stray,
but we’re guided by the right hand of God.

சனவரி 20: மதிமயங்கியவராய்...

பிழைக்கத்தெரியாதவர்களாய் மதிமயங்கியவர்களாய் 

இன்றைய முதல் வாசகத்தில் தாவீதை சந்திக்கிறவர்கள் தற்போதைய சூழலிலிருந்து சிந்தித்தால், ஒன்று அவன் நடிக்கிறான் அல்லது அவன் ஒரு மதிகெட்டவன் என்று வெகு எளிதில் கூறிவிடுவார்கள். அரசன் சவுல் இறந்துவிட்டான், அந்த அரியாசனத்துக்கு ஒரே வாரிசு யோனத்தானும் இறந்து விட்டான் என்ற செய்தி தாவீதை வந்து அடைகிறது. தான் அரசனாவதற்கு வழி திறந்தே உள்ளது என்று உணராமல் அழுதுகொண்டிருக்கும் தாவீதை இன்றைய உலகம் அப்படி தான் சொல்லும். நம்மை சுற்றி நடக்கும் அளப்பறைகளை நாம் கவனிக்காமலா இருக்கிறோம். ஆனால் தாவீதின் அந்த அழுகை உண்மையாகவே அவனது உள்ளத்தின் ஆழத்தில் இருந்து வந்தது. அவன் அன்பு செய்த தலைவன் சவுல், அவனை உயிராய் நேசித்த நண்பன் யோனத்தான் - இவர்களின் இழப்பு தாவீதின் உள்ளத்தை தைக்கத்தான் செய்தது.

இன்றும் அடுத்தவரின் நலனுக்காக, பிறர் மகிழ்ச்சியாய் இருக்க வேண்டும் என்பதற்காக, சமூகம் தழைக்க வேண்டும் என்பதற்காக தன் வாழ்வு, உணவு, உறக்கம், உறவுகள் என்று எதையும் பொருட்படுத்தாது உழைக்கும் ஒருவனுக்கு இந்த உலகம் கொடுக்கும் பெயர் : ஒன்று அவன் பிழைக்க தெரியாதவனாய் இருக்க வேண்டும் இல்லை அவன் பெரும் நடிகனாய் இருக்க வேண்டும் என்பதே!

அன்று கிறிஸ்துவையே அப்படி நினைத்தார்கள். மக்களோடே மக்களுக்காகவே என்றெல்லாம் இன்று கூறுபவர்கள் உண்டு, ஆனால் அதை வாழ்பவர்கள் சொற்பமே. அன்று தன தந்தையின் சித்தம் நிறைவேற, மக்கள் வாழ்வு பெற, அந்த வாழ்வை முழுமையாய் பெற  உணவு, உறக்கம், உறையுள் என்று எதையும் பொருட்படுத்தாது வாழ்ந்த இயேசுவை மதிமயங்கியவர் என்று நினைத்தனர் அவருடைய உறவுகள். ஆம், கடவுளுக்காக, கடவுளின் சித்தத்திற்காக மதிமயங்கியவராகவே அவர் வாழ்ந்தார்.

அன்பிற்குரியோரே... நீங்களும் நானும் கூட அழைக்கப்பட்டுள்ளோம் - பிழைக்க தெரியாதவர்களாய்  வாழ... மதிமயங்கியவர்களாய் வாழ... கடவுளுக்காக கடவுளின் சித்தத்திற்காக மதிமயங்கியவர்களாய்!

TO BE OUT OF OUR MINDS, FOR GOD

WORD 2day: 20th January, 2018 

Saturday, 2nd week in Ordinary Time

2 Sam 1:1-4,11-12,17,19,23-27; Mk 3:20-21

If anyone looked at what is happening in the first reading from today's standards, they would say either David is gone mad or David is faking! Saul the King is dead, the only claim to the throne Jonathan is dead - the way is clear for David to accede the throne! That is how the world would look - we know the political dramas that take place every now and then all around us. But David was not faking! He truly loved Saul and held Jonathan very close to his heart. And his moaning was a genuine cry from his soul.

These kind of people will be considered mad today - even those days! People who are all time caught up in noble ideas and do not want to stoop to the so called worldly standards, people who are fixated with doing good for the others even at the cost of their beings, people who genuinely seek the good of the other and put anything at stake for it, people who see a purpose to their life, which no one else can really see - these people would certainly be branded -mad, out of their minds, lunatics, strange!

Jesus was considered "out of his mind"...yes he was! All that filled his mind was doing the will of his Father. Neither food nor drink nor sleep nor dwelling nor health nor life nor death bothered him - he wanted to do good to the people, take the good news to the people, because that is what the Father wanted of him. He was out of his mind, FOR GOD! As his disciples, isn't that our call too - to be out of our minds for God? 

UNITY OCTAVE 2018 - DAY 3

Your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit 

Readings: 

Exodus 3:4-10          God frees those who are in human bondage

Psalm 24:1-6             Lord, we are the people who seek your face

1 Corinthians 6:9-20 Therefore glorify God in your body

Matthew 18:1-7        Woe to the one by whom the stumbling block comes!

Happening Today: Many Christian churches share a concern about the issue of pornography, especially via the internet. Pornography has destructive consequences for human dignity, particularly for children and young people. Like slavery, it commodifies human beings, ensnares those addicted to it and damages wholesome loving relationships. As one body of Christ, united on earth, we are called to resolve against this disease of humanity and restore the dignity of human beings on earth.

Reflection

The book of Exodus demonstrates God’s concern for people in human bondage. God’s revelation to Moses at the burning bush was a powerful declaration of his will to free his people. God observed their misery, heard their cry and so came to deliver them. God still hears the cry of those who are subject to enslavement today, and wills to deliver them. While sexuality is a gift of God for human relationships and the expression of intimacy, the misuse of this gift through pornography enslaves and devalues both those caught up in producing it and those who consume it. God is not impervious to their plight and Christians are called to be similarly concerned.

St Paul writes that we are called to give glory to God in our own bodies, which means that every part of our lives, including our relationships, can and should be an offering pleasing to God. Christians must work together for the kind of society that upholds human dignity and does not put a stumbling block before any of God’s little ones, but, rather, enables them to live in the freedom which is God’s will for them. 

Prayer

By your heavenly grace, O God,
restore us in mind and body,
create in us a clean heart and a pure mind
that we may give glory to your Name.

May the churches attain unity of purpose
for the sanctification of your people,
through Jesus Christ
who lives and reigns with you
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
for ever and ever.

Amen.

The right hand of God
is healing in our land,
healing broken bodies, minds and souls;
so wondrous is its touch,
with love that means so much,
when we’re healed

சனவரி 19: அவருக்குரியவர்களாய்....

அவரோடு இருக்கவும், அவர் வார்த்தையை அறிவிக்கவும், அவராக வாழவும்...

தன் சீடர்களாய் தன்னோடு இருக்கவும், தன் வார்த்தையை அறிவிக்கவும், தன்னால் அனுப்பப்பட்டவர்களாய் உலகெங்கும் செல்லவும் பன்னிருவரை கிறிஸ்து தேர்ந்தெடுக்கிறார். அவரோடு இருக்கவும் அவர் வார்த்தையை அறிவிக்கவும் என்றால் அவராகவே வாழ்வது அவருக்குரியோராய் வாழ்வது என்று பொருள்படும். ஆம் சுருங்கக்கூறின் அதுவே நமது அழைப்பு - அவருக்குரியோராய் வாழ்வது. அது இதில் அடங்கியுள்ளது என்பதை இன்றைய முதல் வாசகம் தெள்ளத்தெளிவாய்  எடுத்துரைக்கிறது. 

சவுலும் ஆண்டவரால் தேர்ந்துகொள்ளப்பட்டவரே தாவீதும் அவ்வாறே. ஆனால் தேர்ந்துகொள்ளப்பட்டவராய் வாழ்ந்தது யார் என்று பார்த்தால் அது தாவீதே. பொறாமையாலும், தீய எண்ணங்களாலும் இறைவனுக்கு உரியவற்றை தெரிந்துகொள்ளாமல் தவறானவற்றை தேர்ந்துகொண்ட சவுல் தான் இறைவனால் தேர்ந்துகொள்ளப்பட்டவன் என்ற நிலையையே இழந்துவிடுகிறார். தாவீதோ நன்மையை தேர்ந்துகொள்ளும் தனது குணத்தால் இறைவனுக்குரியவராய் உயர்ந்து நிற்கிறார். 

நான் இருந்த சூழல் அப்படி, என்னோடு இருந்தவர்கள் கூறியது அப்படி, நானாக அந்த முடிவை எடுக்கவில்லை, என்று பலவகையான காரணங்களை நான் அடுக்கலாம், ஆனால் என் சொற்களுக்கு பொறுப்பு நானே; என் சிந்தனைகளுக்கு பொறுப்பு நானே, என் முடிவுகளுக்கு பொறுப்பு நானே, என் செயல்களுக்கு பொறுப்பு நானே! இதை நான் மறுக்கவே முடியாது! நான் எதை தேர்ந்துகொள்கிறேனோ அதுவாகவே நான் மாறுகின்றேன். 

நாம் அழைக்கப்பட்டவர்கள்... அழைக்கும் இறைவனுக்கு உரியவற்றை தேர்ந்துகொண்டு, அவருக்குரியவர்களாய் வாழ முடிவெடுப்போம், முயற்சிப்போம்.

TO BE GOD'S

WORD 2day: 19th January, 2018 

Friday, 2nd week in Ordinary Time1 Sam 24:3-21; Mk 3: 13-19

Jesus chose the twelve to be His apostles, to be with him and to be sent out to preach, heal and sanctify; in short, to be His! In the first reading we have Saul and David, both of whom God chose, to belong to God, to be God's! But we see Saul reaching a despicable state because of his continual wrong choices one over the other; and David stands tall today because of that Godly choice that he makes to respect Saul for what he was and spare his life -  an act of kindness and mercy, forgiveness and love, which comes from the godliness from within. 

At any point of time in our life, we become what we choose to be. We can blame it on the situation, on the persons around, on the circumstances, the way things worked out and so on and so forth, but we know it is ultimately the choice that we make at any given time. Be it a thought we entertain in the secret of our hearts, a word we utter to our own hearing, or a decision we make regarding something, or a judgement we pass on another person - it is our choice and we have to take responsibility for it. It is that choice that will define who I am!

The Lord has chosen us, you and me - to be God's! If so, we need to show that by our choices! We cannot blame the world or the times and say, I cannot but choose to do this or say that. No! The choice is mine; the choice is ours! Let us strive always to be worthy of the One who has chosen us to be His, to be God's!

UNITY OCTAVE 2018 - DAY 2

19th January, 2018

No longer as a slave, but a beloved brother

Readings: 

Genesis 1:26-28       God created humankind in God’s own image
Psalm 10:1-10          Why, O Lord, do you stand far off?                
Philemon                  No longer as a slave but more than a slave, a beloved brother
Luke 10:25-37         The Parable of the Good Samaritan

Happening Today: Human trafficking is a form of modern-day slavery in which victims are forced or tricked into sex work, child labour and the harvesting of organs for the profit of the exploiters. It is a global, multimillion-dollar industry. Churches in various regions have formed networks against this trafficking but there should be more concerted effort at the local levels, where we need to get into solidarity with the humanity that is being deprived of its true dignity.

Reflection: 

One of the first things we learn about God in the Hebrew and Christian Bible is that God created humankind in his own image. However, this profound and beautiful truth has often been obscured or denied throughout human history. For instance, in the Roman Empire, the dignity of those enslaved was denied. The Gospel message is entirely different to this. Jesus challenged the social norms that devalued the human dignity of Samaritans, describing the Samaritan as the ‘neighbour’ of the man who had been attacked on the road to Jericho – a neighbour to be loved, according to the Law.  And Paul, made bold in Christ, describes the once-enslaved Onesimus as ‘a beloved brother’, transgressing the norms of his society and affirming Onesimus’s humanity.

Christian love must always be a courageous love that dares to cross borders, recognising in others a dignity equal to our own. Like St Paul, Christians must be ‘bold enough in Christ’ to raise a united voice in clearly recognising trafficked persons as their neighbours and their beloved brothers and sisters, and so work together to end modern-day slavery.

Prayer: 
Gracious God,
draw near to those who are victims of human trafficking,
assuring them that you see their plight and hear their cry.
May your Church be united in compassion and courage to work for that day
when no one will be exploited
and all will be free to live lives of dignity and peace.
This we pray in the name of the Triune God
who can do immeasurably more than we can ask or imagine.
Amen.
