மார்ச் 1: துன்புறுவோரை காணும் கண்கள் பெறுவோம்

அடுத்தவரின் துன்பம் உணரும் மனம் வளர்ப்போம்

பலமுறை நான் எண்ணியதுண்டு... அந்த செல்வந்தன் செய்த பாவம் தான் என்ன. இலாசரை அவன் துன்புறுத்தவோ, இலாசர் கேட்டு கொடுக்காமலோ இருந்ததாக கூறப்படவே இல்லை. அவன் இலாசரை கண்டதாக கூட கூறப்படவில்லை! அதுவே அவனது தவறானது... தன்  காலுக்கடியிலேயே துன்புற்று கிடந்த போதும் இலாசரை கண்டுகொள்ளாததே அந்த செல்வந்தனின் குற்றமாகிவிட்டது. அவனது வளமே அவனுக்கு சாபமாகிவிட்டது. அவனது நல்வாழ்வே அவனுக்கு அழிவாகிவிட்டது. அந்த நலன்களால், அந்த வளங்களால், அவன் பிறரின் துன்பங்களை காண இயலாதவனாக, இல்லாத ஒருவரின் நிலையை உணரமுடியாதவனாக மாறிப்போயிருந்தான். நமது நல்வாழ்வும், வளங்களும் பிறரை காணமுடியாதவர்களாய் நம்மை மாற்றிவிடக் கூடும். 

இன்று சிரியாவில் நடக்கும் மனிதாபிமானமற்ற அழிவை பாருங்கள். எதுவும் புதிதாக நடக்கவில்லையே என்பது போல் இந்த உலகம் போய்க்கொண்டிருக்கும் போக்கை பாருங்கள். ஆங்காங்கே எதிர்ப்புக்குரல்கள் எழுந்தாலும் வன்முறையின் சத்தமும் ஒட்டுமொத்த உலகின் நிசப்தமும் ஒருசேர அந்த குரல்களை வலுவிழக்க செய்துவிடுகின்றன. யார் எக்கேடு கேட்டால் எனக்கென்ன என்று பணம் சுருட்டும் முதலைகள் சுருட்டியவண்ணமே இருக்கின்றன, ஆதிக்க சக்திகள் இந்த இடைவெளியில் தங்கள் ஆதிக்கத்தை எங்காகினும் நிலைநிறுத்த தேடிக்கொண்டே இருக்கின்றன. வஞ்சகத்திலும் வன்மநோக்கிலும் பிறருக்கு எதிராய் செயல்படுபவர்கள் தாங்கள் நினைத்ததை செய்வதிலேயே குறியாய் உள்ளார்கள். நலமும் வளமும் இறைவனிடமிருந்து வருவன என்று அறிந்தவர்கள் கூட அது தாங்களாக தேடிக்கொண்டது என்பதுபோல் தங்கள் நலனை மட்டுமே காண விழைகிறார்கள். 

இறைவனிடமிருந்து நாம் பெற்றுக்கொள்ளும் நன்மைகளும் நம் வாழ்வில் உள்ள வளங்களும் நம்மை அடுத்தவரின் துன்பத்தை உணராதவர்களாய் மாற்றிவிட கூடாது. நம் அருகே இருப்பவர்கள், நமது குடும்பத்தை சார்ந்தவர்கள், கண்முன்னே இருப்பவர்கள் என நம்மை சுற்றியே எத்தனையோ பேர் துன்பத்தில் இருக்கும் போது நான் என் தேவை, என் ஆசை, என் நலன், என் கவலை, என் இன்பம், என் மகிழ்ச்சி, என் திட்டம், என் கனவு, என் உரிமை, என் வளர்ச்சி என்பதில் மட்டும் குறியாய் இருந்தேன் எனில், அந்த செல்வந்தனை போல வருந்த வேண்டியிருக்கும்... அடுத்தவரின் துன்பம் உணரும் மனம் வளர்ப்போம், இறைவனின் உண்மையான பிள்ளைகளாவோம்.

Revive your Sensitivity to the Suffering

Thursday, 2nd week in Lent: 1st Mar, 2018

Jer 17: 5-10; Lk 16: 19-31

At times I used to wonder what mistake did that rich man do? And in what way he is responsible for Lazarus' misery? In no way is he responsible, but he is responsible for his attitude towards Lazarus. That he did not care to even see the miseries of the person right at the foot of his table, looking for the crumbs - oh, what a gross insensitivity, sheer blindness! And the worst of all, that blindness comes from his blessings, the abundance that he had for himself. The Blessings blinded him. 

Look at the situation in Syria... the world at large seems to be oblivious of the sad fact. There are stray voices that call for a global attention, but nothing seems to be working! The affluent are busy making more money. The powerful are looking out for an opportunity to demonstrate their power over the rest. The crooked are making use of every chance to reach their hidden agenda at all cost. 

The blessings should make us more grateful and more sensitive; unfortunately, it can also blind us to those in need around us - within the family, in the neighbourhood, in our workplaces, in our known circles or outside the immediate circle! We can grow so comfortable and cosy about our life that we may forget to look out, out just beside our doorsteps, out right next to us, out there in the broad day light, people suffering, struggling and stifling themselves to death. 

Let our blessings make us more aware of those in need! Let us revive our sensitivity to the suffering!

பிப்ரவரி 28: இறையாட்சியின் நிலைப்பாங்கிற்கு மாறுவோம்!

இறையாட்சியின் நிலைபாங்கா இவ்வுலகின் நிலைபாங்கா? 

இன்றைய வார்த்தை வாழ்வின் இரண்டு நிலைப்பாங்குகளை (MODES) முன்னிறுத்துகின்றது - ஒன்று, இறையாட்சியின் நிலைப்பாங்கு மற்றொன்று இவ்வுலகின் நிலைப்பாங்கு.

இறையாட்சியின் நிலைப்பாங்கு என்பது கிறிஸ்துவின் நிலைப்பாங்கு : தன் வாழ்வை இறைவனின் பார்வையிலிருந்து புரிந்து வாழ்வது. இறைவனுக்கும் இறைசித்தத்திற்கும் முக்கியத்துவத்தை வழங்குவது, அடுத்தவரின் நலன் கருதுவது, எல்லாருக்கும் பணிபுரியும் மனநிலை கொள்வது, மனிதம் முழுவதும் வாழ்வு பெறவேண்டும் அதை முழுமையாய் பெற வேண்டும் என உழைப்பது! 

இவ்வுலகின் நிலைப்பாங்கை பாருங்கள்: நான், எனது, என் உயர்வு, எனது ஆதாயம், எனது நலன் என்று என்னை பற்றி மட்டுமே சிந்திக்கும் மனநிலை அது. கோடிக்கணக்கான மக்கள் ஒரு வேளை உணவின்றி தவிக்கும் இதே பாரத நாட்டில் ஆயிரக்கணக்கான கோடிகள் மோசடி செய்யப்படுவதும் கையாடப்படுவதும் நடக்கக்கூடும் என்றால் இதை விட பெரிய எடுத்துக்காட்டு வேண்டுமா என்ன? 

அடுத்தவரை குறை கூறுவது எளிது... ஆனால், நான் எந்த நிலைப்பாங்கில் என் வாழ்வை வாழ்ந்துகொண்டிருக்கிறேன் என்று நான் மட்டுமே உண்மையில் கூற முடியும். பல வேளைகளில் நமது வாழ்வு இறையாட்சியின் நிலைப்பாங்கிற்கும், இவ்வுலக நிலைப்பாங்கிற்கும் இடையே மாறி மாறி வாழப்படலாம். அது எப்போது இறையாட்சியின் நிலைப்பாங்கிற்கு உறுதியாய் மாற்றப்பட போகிறது என்று கிறிஸ்து நம்மை வினவுகிறார். 

பவுலடிகளார் கூறுவது போல நாம் கிறிஸ்துவின் மனநிலையை அணிந்துகொள்ள (பிலி 2:5) அழைக்கப்படுகிறோம். அதை அணிந்துகொள்ளும் போதே நம் வாழ்வு இறையாட்சியின் நிலைப்பாங்கிற்கு உறுதியாய் மாறுகிறது!

Revive the Reign Mode

Wednesday, 2nd week in Lent: 28th February, 2018

Jer 18: 18-20; Mt 20: 17-28

The readings today present to us the stark contrast between the Jesus' way of thinking and the Worldly terms of thinking. 

Jesus' way of thinking is Reign mode of thinking; thinking of the primacy of God, thinking of the framework of love, thinking of the criterion of service, thinking of the fullness of life of all! 

The Worldly mode of thinking is thinking of one's gains at all cost, thinking of one's comfort mindless about the struggles of others, thinking of scaling the ladder and not serving my brothers and sisters, thinking of every one and every situation as an opportunity for my own gains! Look at the hundreds of millions of scam that are being spoken of these days, in India...a place where millions go hungry out of misery everyday. 

Each of us can judge for ourselves, in which mode we live our life today. Or some times the modes may be off and on; that is, occasionally we may have the two of them alternating between themselves. But which of it is the predominant mode?  And when are we going to clearly switch to the Reign Mode? St. Paul instructs in his letter to the Philippians: 'Put on the mind of Christ' (2:5).

Let us revive the Reign Mode of our life!

பிப்ரவரி 27 : என் முடிவு என் கையில்!

தனி மனித சுதந்திரம் என்னும் அரிய கொடை 

என் சிந்தனைகள், என் சொற்கள், என் செயல்களுக்கு நான் யாரையும் பொறுப்பாக்க முடியாது. பல வேளைகளில் நாம் சொல்லும் ஒரு சொல்லுக்கோ, நாம் செய்யும் ஒரு செயலுக்கோ வேறு யாரவது ஒருவரை அல்லது வேறு ஏதாவது ஒரு சூழலை பொறுப்பாக்கிவிட்டு தப்பிக்க நாம் நினைப்பதுண்டு. அது நம் தனி மனித சுதந்திரம் என்னும் கொடையை வீணாக்கும் ஒரு மனநிலை என்று இன்றைய வார்த்தை குறிப்பிடுகிறது. 

இதை மனதில் நிறுத்தியே கிறிஸ்து இம்மண்ணில் உங்களுக்கு தந்தையாக யாரையும் கொள்ளாதீர்கள் என்று கூறுகிறார். எபிரேய பண்பாட்டிலே தந்தை என்பவர் தான் அனைத்தையுமே எனக்கு முடிவு செய்வார். நான் என்ன செய்ய வேண்டும் எதை தேர்ந்துகொள்ளவேண்டும் என்று அனைத்தையும் முடிவு செய்வது தந்தையே! இவ்வுலகில் யாரையும்  உங்களுக்கு தந்தை என்று அழைக்காதீர்கள் என்று கூறுவதன் பொருள் இதுவே: உங்கள் முடிவுகள் உங்களுடையதாய் இருக்கட்டும் என்பதே!

தனி மனித சுதந்திரம் என்பது இறைவன் நமக்கு அளித்துள்ள மாபெரும் கொடையாகும். நன்மையானவற்றை நாமாக எந்த வற்புறுத்தலும்  இன்றி தேர்ந்துகொள்வதே தனிமனித சுதந்திரமாகும். சில நேரங்களில் இதுவே நாம் தவறானவற்றை தெரிந்துகொள்வதற்கு பயன்படுத்தப்படுகிறது என்பதும் உண்மையே! இதையே நாம் தவறு என்றும் பாவம் என்றும் கூறுகிறோம். தவறான தேர்வை உணர்ந்து அதை திருத்திக்கொள்ளும் போது நாம் வளர்கிறோம், ஆளுமை பெறுகிறோம்! இதையே இறைவன் நம்மிடமிருந்து எதிர்பார்க்கிறார். 

நாம் தனிமனித சுதந்திரத்தோடு நன்மையை தேர்ந்துகொள்ளவேண்டும், தீமையை விளக்கவேண்டும், தவறி அதில் விழுந்துவிட்டால் விரைவில் எழுந்து விலகவேண்டும் என்று அழைக்கிறார். தவக்காலம் என்பது இந்த வாழ்முறையை நமக்கு கற்பிக்கும் காலமாகும், உணர்ந்து இக்காலத்தை தொடர்ந்து வாழ்வோமா?

Revive personal responsibility for your choices!

Tuesday, 2nd week in Lent: 27th February, 2018

Is 1: 10, 16-20; Mt 23: 1-12

Let no one be responsible for your judgments, your behaviours, your decisions and your choices! That is what Jesus meant when he said, let no one be your father or master here on earth. 

For a Hebrew, father would mean that person who decides everything for you! You have nothing else to say, because the father's decision is final. The master is some one who holds a total authority over you; what he decides to be right has to be right for you; what he decides to be desirable has to be desirable for you! 

The point that Jesus is making here is that, a person will be responsible for one's own choices. It is no more the case that a person does something or decides on something and passes the blame on to some one else: his or her father, or generations before, or persons in authority. 

Let each one take responsibility for one's own choices, challenges the Word today. Your choices determine your destiny, apart from the all pervading love that is God. It is this love that has invested us with such a great personal will and freedom, using which we are challenged to choose God and all that pertains to God.

Let us quit looking for scapegoats; let us revive our personal responsibility for our choices. 

RevivaLent 2018 - # 13

Revive your Christ-Criterion

Monday, 2nd week in Lent: 26th February, 2018

Dan 9: 4b-10; Lk 6: 36-38

Once I remember, as it has happened many a times, I stepped out of the Sacristy after the Sunday Eucharist, and a person approached me and said: "Fr., thanks for the homily today! It was really beautiful, but I am afraid too difficult to practice!" And I smiled at her reassuringly and said, "If I were to think of living my life anyway, with compromises, it would be much easier! But living a true and convinced Christian life is any day, difficult." She smiled, and bowed for a blessing!

"To live by the law you gave us", prays prophet Daniel today in the first reading! And Jesus gives us a criterion, to follow the law. Let what you expect from others for yourself be the criterion for your dealings with others! But the difficult part follows: Jesus says, let what you expect be the criterion but not what you actually get! You may or may not get what you expect, but you have an obligation to give the others what you expect from them! What do you get in return? Does that actually matter?

An apt day to pray with St. Francis of Assisi, 'Lord, grant that I may seek to understand, than to be understood; to love than to be loved; to forgive than to be forgiven'. To give, give and to give..that is the Christ-Criterion!

Revive your choice to be peculiarly God's own!

Saturday, 1st week in Lent : 24th February, 2018

Dt 26: 16-19; Mt 5: 43-48

A couple of years ago, I remember, there was a row on a comment passed by a leader of one of the religious nationalist groups in India on Mother Teresa and her motivations behind all the service she had rendered to the least of the Indian Society. Of all the retorts that came by, I loved the cartoon some one posted; it was a cartoon depicting Mother Teresa holding that gentleman who spoke rather ill of her, as a mother would hold her little child! And the caption read in Mother's own words: if you judge others, you will not have the time to love them. For me this was the best response, because it brings out our nature: people peculiarly God's own(Dt 26:18)!

We have had so many examples of this peculiarity which the Word demands from us - Pope John Paul II who met the one who attempted to assassinate him, the family of Sr. Rani Maria who accepted the murderer of their daughter as one of their family members, Mrs. Gladys Steins who instantly forgave the one who burnt her husband and two sons alive and the mother of the two brothers among the 21 coptic christians beheaded in Egypt! 

These people are peculiar in the eyes of the world and that is our call too: to be people peculiarly God's own. The only way to belong to God is to be God-like in our love for others, loving everyone with no conditions, no limits and no expectations! Difficult? Yes! Any alternative options? Definitely No, not if we want to be truly God's own!

Let us revive our choice to be peculiarly God's own!

Revive your choice for Right Righteousness

Friday, 1st week in Lent: 23rd February, 2018

Ezek 18: 21-28; Mt 5: 20-26

The "Scribes and the Pharisees"...we find this phrase very often in Jesus' words. What did he have against them? Was he then a sectarian too... dividing and categorising people by the group they belong to? No! Never! Jesus himself was a Pharisee, hold some historians and he of course had disciples among pharisees, tax collectors and zealots. Then where is the justification for the frequent usage of this phrase, 'the scribes and the pharisees'? 

The phrase actually refers to, that category of people, need not be necessarily only the scribes and the pharisees, who consider the external signs and legalistic fulfillments more important or significant than the interior disposition. What we do is important, but why we do what we do, matters much more! 

The internal disposition with which something is carried out, truly determines the value of the act or the attitude. Righteousness often can remain a matter of image building or opinion creation. Jesus, explains today his version of righteousness - the right righteousness. It consists of meekness and humility, openness (lack of judgments) and acceptance, endurance and perseverance, and endless hopefulness. Against these measures on the scale, where does my righteousness stand?

Let us revive our choice for Right Righteousness!

Revive the sense of the Lord at hand

Thursday, 1st week in Lent: 22nd Feb, 2018

Est 12: 14-16; 23-25; Lk 7:7-12

The Lord is at hand, always, in all circumstances, specially in difficulties and troubles. This is the promise of the cross. Because as the letter to the Hebrews would affirm, we do not have a master who does not understand us. We have someone who understands us and knows us, for he himself has gone through all that we are put through in life. A very Christ-ian attitude in the face of difficulties and struggles would be to approach any situation with an endless hope, a limitless certainty that God is with me, whether I can feel it or not at a concrete moment, in a concrete manner. 

There have been moments in the lives of the saints when they have been through darkness and obscurity. It is in the manner that they handled such experiences that they have deserved their identity of sanctity. Today, we are growing weaker and weaker in our faith-life, that we are discouraged, desperate in the first moment of our failure or trial. The increasing number of suicides and increasing multitudes of God-forsakers are only symptoms of such a deficiency. 

Our Christian faith would be meaningless without this conviction, for which Esther today stands witness and Jesus shines as an advocate - the conviction that the Lord is at hand, always, in all circumstances, especially when I am through struggles and difficulties!

Let us revive our sense of the Lord at hand!
