Wisdom and Foolishness

Friday,  21st week in Ordinary Time 

31st August, 2018: 1 Cor 1: 17-25; Mt 25: 1-13

The world today has its own definition of wisdom and foolishness, success and failure... everything, to put it simply, calculated in terms of benefits and gains in comparison to effort and investment. Convenience and comfort seem unfailing criteria of choice. But can these be Christian parameters?

The Christian paradigm, as Paul says is the Cross and the hope that it projects. However hard we may try, no other paradigm can make sense within a Christian mindset. The sacrifices we make and the selfless goodwill that we have towards others are true Christian parameters of righteousness. 

The shrewdness of the world and the folly of God... the foolishness of the world and the wisdom of God... the difference is crucial. That is what makes a Christian Paradigm!

Doing good without expecting anything in return or without looking for its credits, and more than that, 'being' good in spite of persons who contemplate evil and circumstances  that spread fear, is the cross we are called to embrace if we wish to belong to the Bridegroom!

Waiting...but how?

30th August, 2018: 1 Cor 1:1-9; Mt 24: 42-51

The Word today brings out the all important spiritual practice of Waiting. Waiting is a daily-life experience for most of us, if not all of us. When we look at it from a larger perspective of Spirituality and life changing experiences, it can be of three modes depending on the disposition with which a person waits.

Utopian Waiting, is a kind of excited waiting. It is more or less like a child who is waiting with excitement for a Christmas gift from the Santa. There is so much of dreaming and planning about the gift. The gift is opened and admired and experienced, all in imagination or at the mental plane, even before it reaches the hands of the beholder. Here there is so much of noise made about it though no one is absolutely sure what it is all about. About waiting for the Lord too, there are people who do this, aren't they?

Slumberous Waiting, is a kind of inactive waiting, just waiting to kill the time till it all happens. There is nothing much done about it, or practically nothing, because the person waiting does not expect anything spectacular at the end of it all. There is a kind of indifference and cynicism, even a bit of pessimism! There is nothing new under the sun and what is going to be has always been, they believe. They feel they have nothing much to accomplish and there is so much of compromise and lethargy here, that when it really happens they are hardly prepared!

Spiritual Waiting, is a  kind of wholesome waiting, which lives the present moment with a holistic mindset that contains within this particular moment the gratitude for the past and the hope for the future! It is a kind of spiritual disposition that is sincere and genuine about the present life, with all its responsibilities and trials, joys and difficulties, without belittling what has gone before and what awaits. It is fundamentally living one's life to the full, joyfully waiting for the plan of eternity to unfold in all its grandeur.

Martyrdom - A matter of fact!

29th August, 2018: The beheading of John

Jer 1: 17-19; Mk 6: 17-29

Recently discussing about martyrdom with a group of youngsters,  one asked me, 'why should they go up to martyrdom?' In the same tone I replied, 'they don't go up to it,  it comes after them!'

Martyrdom is not a given-up mode of life.  It is a fruit of living one's life to the full till the end,  never losing the core purpose of that life for even a moment.

Martyrdom is not an option to choose.  It is a consequence of the choices made,  absolute choices for truth and righteousness. It is not a choice to die, but a choice to live - live for God, for truth and for righteousness, where eventually death unsuccessfully vies to have its last word. 

Martyrdom is not an unprecedented event.  One sees it coming all the time.  It is always there in front of the person threatening him or her. But for the person who is concerned with things that truly matter, martyrdom remains just a matter of fact!

Be Scandal Proof!

Tuesday, 21st week in Ordinary time

28th August, 2018: Remembering St. Augustine
2 Thess 2: 1-3a, 14-17; Mt 23: 23-30

I was shocked a few years ago, when I saw a video posted by an anti catholic brother. He was criticising everything 'Catholic' and went to the extent of calling the then Holy Father, the Anti-Christ who is to come. Taking the matter to another priest, I expressed my shock at this. And the priest just smiled at me and said: "a fruitful tree has to foresee stones coming its way!" 

Oppositions, today more than ever, keep growing to unbelievable proportions against the faith and tradition that we have grown with. There are splendid ways of God that we come across in spite of all these oppositions. At same time there is no dearth of examples that fail to communicate God's benevolence to us. 

What we are to do is, simply remain calm and composed at times when we are troubled. No use lamenting the absence of witnesses for the Lord, but being one myself - that is what really matters. And whether we are a model or not, it is important and urgent today to observe, notice and identify the counter witnesses! And it is more important and crucial to be scandal proof! 

Yesterday we celebrated St. Monica and today we have her son St. Augustine! We can imagine how scandal proof Monica would have been to have a husband like hers and the son. Augustine too, was not merely influenced but led himself gradually towards an experience of true conversion and ardent conviction, thanks to St. Ambrose. We are surrounded by sacred memories of these saintly people today: let us resolve never to give scandal to others and to grow more and more scandal proof these days!

Growing to be children of the Reign

Monday, 21st week in Ordinary time 

27th August, 2018: Remembering St. Monica
2 Thess 1: 1-5, 11-12; Mt 23: 13-22

Children of God or Children of the Hell... what decides our identity? Not what we claim to believe in nor the group we belong to. It will depend on my personal integrity says the Lord today. If I declare what I believe and live what I am convinced of, I will be a daring disciple of Christ and that is what Christ wants of us. 

It will require that we live in such a way "that our God may make us worthy of his calling and powerfully bring to fulfillment every good purpose and every effort of faith, that the name of our Lord Jesus may be glorified in you and you in him, in accord with thy grace of our God and Lord Jesus Christ" (2 Thes 1:11-12.)

To grow to be worthy of our calling as children of the Reign, is the call that we have everyday. Let nothing that is part of us - our speech, our action, our attitudes, our values - let nothing that is part of us offer a message that is against the Reign of God. Let everything that we are involved in be a proclamation of the Gospel, proclamation of the goodness of God, proclamation of the glory of God in Lord Jesus Christ.

St. Monica wished this for her son, that he realises his call and becomes a child of the Reign...he not only became a child of the Reign, but a champion of the Reign!

FIDELITY TO THE FAITHFULNESS

Responding to the Faithfulness of the Lord

21st Sunday in Ordinary time: 26th August, 2018

Josh 24: 1-2,15-18; Eph 5: 21-32; Jn 6: 60-69

The God of Israel has always been identified as the God of the Covenant: I shall be your God and you shall be my people. Through ups and downs, during plenty and calamities, in peace and war, the Lord ever remained faithful to the covenant, even when the people went away from it and abandoned it. That is why the people of Israel did not contain themselves with saying God is faithful, but believed firmly that God is Faithfulness!

Today we have Joshua who understands and expresses exactly what is expected of the people of God: as for me and my household, we shall always serve the Lord. Being faithful to God was not his initiative, Joshua knew it well. It was only in response to the faithfulness of God. 

This faithfulness of God is compared to the faithfulness that is observed in a marriage fidelity between the husband and the wife! It is a faithfulness of utmost sacrality and as much as it concerns the Lord, it is absolute! 

I am reminded of an account narrated about an old man, close to his nineties, who would come everyday to a dispensary to dress a wound on his thumb. When the time nears the mark of midday, he would get anxious and restless, telling the nurses to hurry up or to let him go as he had to go to attend to his wife at noon! When they enquired about his wife, he would tell them that she is in a state of unconsciousness (coma) for the past 6 months! The nurses would ask, 'anyway, she would not know if you came on time or not, or even whether you were there or not, why do you give it so much of an importance?'. The man would respond: 'it does not matter to me whether she knows it or not, I have made a promise to her to be at her side everyday at noon without fail, and I will keep my promise come what may!' That is what the Lord's fidelity is all about - keeping the promise!

To whom shall we go, Lord, for you have the words of eternal life. Peter reminds us today that our fidelity to God does no good to God but gains us the eternal life that we long for. Our fidelity to the Faithfulness is a grace unto ourselves.

And we would do well to ask ourselves how faithful we are to God's fidelity! 

BREAD THAT TRANSFORMS

Children, Friends and Favourites

20th Sunday in Ordinary time: 19th August, 2018
Pro 9: 1-6; Eph 5: 15-20; Jn 6: 51-58

You become what you eat, they say! In fact there are problems in the world today depending what and how persons and societies eat. There are some who suffer of obesity and there are some who suffer due to hunger and malnutrition. Eating is an existential need of persons, invariable of their social status, age or economic bearings. If we look at the Word today from the background of this fact, we have a deep message to reflect on: I am the bread that has come down from heaven, anyone who eats of this bread will live for ever.

While the ordinary bread that we eat becomes part of us, the Bread that comes from heaven does exactly the contrary - we become part of it! Jesus Christ, the Son of God is the Bread from heaven; the eternal life of God promised to all who trust in the Lord. When we eat of the bread that is Jesus the Son of God, we become part of Him, we become sharers in the eternal life, life without end. This is why what Jesus says is so literally justified: one who eats of me, shall live forever. It is not merely an analogical or a poetic statement.

The divine bread has the special capacity to transform us, into children of the Father, friends of the Son and favourites of the Spirit!

Children of the Father: 
We receive the power to become children of God when we believe, accept and eat of the One who has come down from heaven! Yes the Eucharist makes us truly children of God: we eat of Christ and we become Christ...we are transformed into the image of God, that is Christ. As St. Paul says: he is the image of the invisible God, the image in which we were created! The challenge we have here is to check at regular intervals, how Godly we have grown, and how truly we live as children of God the Father and Mother.

Friends of the Son:
I don't call you servants but friends and there is no other love greater than laying down one's life for one's friends! This is what Jesus has made of us: his friends! When we eat of this bread, the Eucharist, we partake of the sacrifice that Jesus made on our behalf. By claiming the Spiritual endowment that Jesus has made in this wonderful sacrament, we become his friends. Becoming friends is not merely a privilege, it is a challenge too! A challenge to do what pleases our friend, to be ready to give of ourselves fully for his sake without counting the cost.

Favourites of the Spirit:
In eating the Bread, we are filled with the Spirit that enlivens our body, mind, heart and soul. Wisdom is the gift of the Spirit that enables us to understand the effects of being created in the Image of God, making us look beyond what is apparent. We become favourite dwelling place of the Spirit, with the coming of the flesh and blood of Christ into our hearts. This is the most evident transformation and even a measure of the other two transformations. The challenge here is to remain open to the promptings of the  Spirit and dare to take decisions that are outlined by Paul as a recipe for Spirit-filled Christians. Dont we know we are the dwelling place of the Holy Spirit!

As we approach the Eucharistic Table today, let us resolve to look deeper into our innermost Image, to analyse our friendships and prioritise our frienship with Christ and consciously and confidently grow to be true, fitting and favourite dwelling places of the life giving Spirit!

Being children versus being childish

Saturday, 19th week in Ordinary time

Ezek 18: 1-10, 13, 30-32; Mt 19: 13-15

There is a difference, a vast one at that, between being children and being childish! 

Being children is being free, natural, spontaneous and simple. It is being dependent with love, being attached in affection, being truthful in relationships and being unsullied in words and deeds. 

Being childish is being frightened, artificial, calculative and complicated. It is being unduly dependent out of fear, frightfully clinging on to practices, being calculative in relationships and selfishly seeking one's own good at the cost of the other.

In the Word today, while Jesus makes a concerted call to be children, Ezekiel warns us against becoming childish! We need to grow - not from being children to being adults but from being childish to being truly children, truly children of God, children of one loving God!

Goodness: God's natural choice!

Friday, 19th week in Ordinary Time

Ezek 16: 1-15, 60, 63; Mt 19: 3-12

The Word today brings out the Merciful face of God at its best. The Lord is upset that the people of Israel have abandoned the covenant that they had entered into with the Lord. When the Lord contemplates even a penalty, he contemplates it in terms of goodness! 

Being good to them and being good to all those who will respect the commandment, this is what the Lord contemplates. The people of Israel lose their privilege as  'chosen race' but every race becomes special provided they had chosen the Lord. 

It is again back to that key element of any spiritual maturity: choice!  The Lord is always good...and we can taste that goodness if we choose to! We can become the chosen race, if we choose God to be our priority!

Our goodness has to be seen in our daily life, specially in our relationships. The mutual respect and the good of the other have to be the yardsticks that measure the extent to which we can be known as people of God. In short, we need to grow in our choice and goodness is the natural choice of God.

Time to pack your bags!

Thursday, 19th week in Ordinary time

Ezek 12:1-12; Mt 18:21 - 19:1

We have two interesting parables for our reflection today: the first one is an action parable  by Ezekiel, however the director of the act is God; the second one is a parable by Jesus hitting the nail on its head! Though there is nothing common to these two parables per se, if we pay attention to the underlying message they are connected to each other. 

What Jesus wants to establish through the parable he narrates is basically the Golden Rule: you wish you would be forgiven every time you make a mistake and if so, what stops you from forgiving the other every time the other makes a mistake! Look at and become aware of the numerous times that you have been forgiven by God - and if you are truly cognizant of this fact in all its dimensions, you would never ever regret to forgive your brother or your sister.

The very fact that you resist forgiving the other is an indication of your haughtiness, your self righteousness and your rebelliousness against the goodness of God that is demanded from you. If your give into this, Ezekiel warns, it would soon be time to pack your bags - time to lose all the goodness that you have received from the Lord, time to fall out of grace, out of an authentic relationship with God.

Become aware of the amount of gratuitous benefits that you have received from the Lord, that actually forms your baggage! If you fail to realise its immensity and the responsibility it places on you, you would soon be required to pack your bags and leave the grace that your are enjoying - BEWARE!

மரியாளின் விண்ணேற்பு: எதிர்நோக்கின் சின்னம்

ஆகஸ்ட் 15, 2018: மரியன்னையின்  விண்ணேற்பு பெருவிழா 

தி.ப 11:19, 12:16-20; 1 கொரி 15: 20-26; லூக் 1: 39-56 

என்னில் நம்பிக்கை கொள்வோர் இறப்பினும் வாழ்வர், என்று கூறிய கிறிஸ்துவின் உயிர்ப்பின் மகிமை நம் அனைவருக்குமே எதிர்நோக்காய் அளிக்கப்பட்டிருக்கிறது. அவரது இறப்பிலும் உயிர்ப்பிலும் நமது வாழ்வு நிலைவாழ்வாக மாற்றப்பட்டுள்ளது. அந்த நிலைவாழ்வு, அந்த எதிர்நோக்கின் இலக்கு, எப்படிப்பட்டதாக இருக்கும் என்பதை நமக்கு புரிய வைக்க இறைவனால் நிகழ்த்தப்பட்ட மற்றொரு மறைபொருளே மரியன்னையின் விண்ணேற்பாகும்! 

சில கத்தோலிக்கரல்லாத சகோதர சகோதரிகள், இது தவறானது, கிறிஸ்துவுக்கு இணையாக மரியாளை உயர்த்தும் செயலிது என்றெல்லாம் உளறிக்கொட்டும் போது கத்தோலிக்கர்களாகிய நாம் இதை தெளிவாய் புரிந்துகொள்ள வேண்டியிருக்கிறது. மரியன்னை இறந்தார் ஆனால் அவரது கல்லறை எங்கும் இல்லை என்று தொடக்க கால திருச்சபை முதலே தெளிவாய் உணர்ந்துவந்தனர் கிறிஸ்தவர்கள்! ஏன் அவரது கல்லறை இல்லை என்று கேட்டபோது தான் அவர்களது நம்பிக்கையின் அனுபவம் பகிரப்பட்டது!

கிறிஸ்துவால் மீட்கப்படுவோர் நிலைவாழ்வு பெறுகிறார்கள் என்பதை தான் நமது எதிர்நோக்கு என்று நாம் முழுமையாய் நம்புகிறோம்... இந்த எதிர்நோக்கின் அடையாளமாய், மனிதர்களிடையே தனிப்பேறு பெற்றவளாய், இறைமகனை உலகிற்கு தந்தவளாய் இருக்கும் மரியன்னை இறைவனால் உடலோடும் ஆன்மாவோடும் எடுத்துக்கொள்ளப்பட்டார் என்பதே அந்த நம்பிக்கையின் அனுபவம்! இங்கு விண்ணேற்புக்கும், விண்ணேற்றத்திற்கும் நடுவே உள்ள வேறுபாட்டை நாம் உணரவேண்டும், புரிந்துகொள்ளவேண்டும். 

இறைமகன் கிறிஸ்து இறந்து உயிர்த்து விண்ணேறி தன் தந்தையின் வலப்பக்கம் வீற்றிருக்கிறார் என்று நாம் நம்புகிறோம். மரியன்னையோ இறைத்தந்தையின் பேரன்பிற்குரிய மகளாக, தூய ஆவியின் இணையற்ற கருவியாக, இறைமகனின் அன்னையும் முதல் சீடத்தியுமாக விண்ணேற்கப்பட்டார், எடுத்துக்கொள்ளப்பட்டார், கொண்டுசெல்லப்பட்டார். இது இறைவனால் அவருக்கு தரப்பட்ட தனிப்பட்டதொரு கொடையாகும்... இதனாலேயே  இன்றைய நற்செய்தி இறைபுகழுரைக்கும் நற்செய்தியாக, அன்னைக்கு இறைவன் செய்த பெரும்காரியங்களை நினைவுகூரும் நற்செய்தியாக தேர்ந்தளிக்கப்பட்டிருக்கிறது. 

நாமும் அன்னையின் கீழ்படிதலையும், இறைசித்ததை மட்டும் செய்யும் புனிதமான வாழ்வையும் கொண்டிருந்தோமெனில், நமக்கும் இதே கொடை எதிர்நோக்காய் காத்திருக்கிறது என்பதை நமக்கு விளக்கும்  திருவிழா இது. அன்னையின் பிள்ளைகளாய் மகிழ்வோம், அவள் வாழ்விலிருந்து பாடங்கற்போம், இறைவனின் மகிமையை முழுதாய் காண்போம்!

Assumed into heaven - a sign of Hope

Solemnity of the Assumption of our Blessed Mother

August 15, 2018: Ap 11:19, 12:16-10; 1 Cor 15: 20-26; Lk 1: 39-56

The crossing of the red sea and the Babylonian Exile are said to be the watershed for the God experience of the people of Israel. It was their walk from slavery to freedom that gave an identity to the people of the Old Testament. 

In the New Testament too it was a similar experience that proved to be the watershed... the passing from death to life; the event of life giving Hope! The hope that Jesus' resurrection brought to humankind reaches its fulfillment, when Mary shares the fruits of it as the first one to do so, in union with her Son and Lord Jesus Christ.

Mary was instrumental in bringing in the light of the world. She remained faithful to the One who had called her and thus wins favour in God's eyes. Hence it is that many a saint spoke of her as the lady of the Apocalypse, bringing forth the Son and fighting the dragon. She is given these honours due to the humility with which she went about doing the will of the One who had called her.

It was this humility and docility that made her so grateful and recognizant of God's mighty presence with her on a constant basis. This recognition makes her a strong person: so free and so responsible. When she sings that hymn of glory to the Lord it was not merely a wishful prayer but also an expression of commitment towards the Reign of God, the reign of equality and justice to all.

There is a difference between Ascension and Assumption: let us not be carried away by those who argue that it is unjust to raise Mary to this level and that it is almost like granting her a place equivalent to Jesus who ascended into heaven! The Church teaches that Christ, the Son of God after his resurrection ascended to the Father. The same Church teaches us in clear terms, "Mary was assumed" into heaven by the grace of God! This was a grace bestowed on Mary, not a feat achieved by Mary. Hence what we celebrate today is the goodness and generosity of God in granting God's beloved daughter and the Mother of the Son of God, a singular privilege which further manifests God's glory!

May the feast of Assumption bring us to a humble recognition of the ways in which God wants to use us here and now, that we too may one day experience the fulfilment of our Hope in the Lord.

தன்னலம் துறப்பதே கிறிஸ்தவ வாழ்வு!

ஆகஸ்ட் 14, 2018: புனித மேக்ஸ்மில்லியன் கோல்பே 

தன் தந்தையின் சித்தத்திற்காகவும், நமது மீட்பிற்காகவும் மட்டுமே தன் வாழ்வை துச்சமென மதித்து அதை இறைவனின் கையில் ஒப்படைக்க முன் வந்த கிறிஸ்துவின் சீடர்கள் நாம் என்பதை நாம் எண்பிக்க வேண்டுமென்றால், நமது வாழ்வில் தன்னலம் என்ற பேச்சிற்கே இடம் இருக்க கூடாது என்று நமக்கு கற்பிக்கும் புனிதர் ஒருவரை நாம் இன்று கொண்டாடுகின்றோம். ஐந்து நாட்களுக்கு முன்னர் நாம் நினைவுகூர்ந்த மற்றொரு போலந்து நாட்டை சார்ந்த புனிதை எடித்து ஸ்டெய்ன் போன்று புனித மேக்சிமில்லியன் கோல்பேவும் 1941ம் ஆண்டு நாசிப்படைகளின் கைதியாக சிறையில் அடைக்கப்பட்டார். 

அவுஸ்விச் என்ற இடத்தில இருந்த கான்செண்ட்ரேஷன் கேம்ப் எனப்படும் அந்த நாசி சிறையில் ஒரு விதிமுறை இருந்தது, யாரவது கைதி தப்பி ஓடினால், உள்ளிருக்கும் கைதிகளில் பத்து பேர் கொல்லப்படுவர் என்று. ஒருமுறை ஒரு கைதி தப்பித்து செல்ல, கொல்லப்படவேண்டிய பத்து பேர் தேர்ந்தெடுக்கப்பட்டனர். அதில் ஒருவர் தனது மனைவி குழந்தைகளை நினைத்து கதறி அழ ஆரம்பித்தார். வரிசையில் நின்று இதை பார்த்துக்கொண்டிருந்த ஒருவர் முன் வந்து இவருக்கு பதிலாக நான் சாக தயார் என்று கூறினார். படைத்தலைவர் ஏளனமாய் அவரை பார்த்து யார் நீ என, அந்த மனிதர்: நான் ஒரு கத்தோலிக்க குருவானவர், என்று திடமாய் பதில் கூறினார். ஓ கத்தோலிக்க பன்றியா... நீ யாராக இருந்தால் எனக்கென்ன என்று கூறி, கதறிய அந்த மனிதருக்கு பதிலாக இந்த குருவானவரை கொல்லப்படுவதற்கு அனுப்பினார் அந்த படை தலைவர். 

யாரென்றே தெரியாத ஒருவருக்காக, எந்த விதமான எதிர்பார்ப்புமின்றி, தான் ஒரு கிறிஸ்தவன் என்பதனால் மட்டுமே, தான் ஒரு கத்தோலிக்க குருவானவர் என்பதனால் மட்டுமே அடுத்தவருக்காக இறக்க முன்வந்த இந்த புனிதர் இன்றைய தன்னலம் மிகுந்த சூழலில் நமக்கு ஒரு மாபெரும் எடுத்துக்காட்டே!

அடுத்தவருக்காக தன்  உயிரை தருவதை காட்டிலும் மேலானதொரு அன்பு வேறொன்றுமில்லை.

Obstinacy of Human Selfishness

August 14, 2018: Remembering St. Maxmilian Kolbe

Ezek 2:8 - 3:4; Mt 18: 1-5, 10, 12-14

The Rebellious people have eyes to see but do not see; they have ears to hear but do not hear. How good, loving, forgiving, merciful and bountiful God is to me - I am so aware of it right until the time that I myself have to be good, loving, forgiving and generous with those around me! I begin to count, calculate, justify, judge, grudge and grumble when I have to give or forgive or show mercy or be loving. 

I have the eyes to see God's goodness but I lack the vision to see that I need to be good too. I have the ears to hear the merciful whisperings of the Divine but I don't have the ears to hear the pleading for mercy in the eyes of my brother and sister! What is this but an awful obstinacy of human selfishness?

The Obstinacy of Human Selfishness does not allow me to share with the others whatever God has given me; it blocks even the natural consciousness and awareness of the extent to which I have received. In comparison to the amount of love that God has showered on us, where does the level of love that I show to others stand? In comparison to the sins and the wickedness that God has forgiven in me, where do the simple faults committed by my brother or my sister stand? 

Maxmilian Kolbe, stands tall in this regard as he offers to give of himself to a brother of his, whom he knew not, from whom he received not, for whom he did not make any calculations whatsoever - a simple but profound way of loving as God does. Even if not giving my life for the other, can I resolve today not to be insensitive, not to close my eyes at the struggles of the other, not to shut my ears from the cries of the helpless? Can I think beyond me, beyond the obstinacy of human selfishness?

Magnificence: the God-perspective of our lives!

Monday, 19th week in Ordinary time

August 13, 2018: Ezek 1:2-5,24-28; Mt 17: 22-27

We belong to a God who is mighty, grandiose and magnificent. And because we belong to this God we too are mighty and magnificent. And this magnificence loses its true colour if it is detached from its origin, that is God. It dissipates into arrogance or pride and degrades humanity. As long as it is strongly linked to the Lord, it is ready to put up with sacrifices, sufferings, unjust treatments, and so on. 

As St. Paul would put it, "the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory about to be revealed to us" (Rom 8:18). We will learn this only when we begin to see everything from the perspective of God and that is what Jesus teaches us in the Gospel. 

Jesus shows us an example of looking at everything in life, absolutely everything in life, from the perspective of God. Even a question of paying taxes leads Jesus to reflect on the fact that we are sons and daughters of God, that we are free by virtue of our participation in the Divine Nature of God! 

The capacity of Jesus to move from the ordinary things of the daily life to a reflection on our relationship with God, is something amazing and something that we need to practice ourselves too. Let us at the end of this day, look back and see how many God-talks we were inspired to, all along this day. That would be possible only if we decided to live our life conscious of our magnificence, that is the God-perspective of our lives!

மனிதமும் மாட்சியும்

ஆகஸ்ட் 13, 2018: எசேக் 1:2-5,24-28; மத் 17:22-27

இறைவனின் மாட்சிமை நம் கண்கொண்டு காண இயலாதது என்பதை எசேக்கியேல் அழகாய் விளக்குகிறார். அந்த இறைவனின் உருவிலும் சாயலிலும் படைக்கப்பட்ட நாமும் அதே மாட்சியை தங்கியவர்கள் என்பதை நாம் ஏன்  அவ்வப்போது மறந்துவிடுகிறோம்? இறைவனில் இணைந்து இருக்கும் வரை நமது மாட்சியும், உலகம் வியக்க மின்னுகிறது. ஆனால் இறைவனை விட்டு விலகி சிந்தித்தால் அதே மாட்சி, கர்வமாய், தற்புகழ்ச்சியாய், திமிராய், அரக்கத்தனமாய் அழிவுக்கு வழிவகுக்கிறது. இறைவனோடு இணைந்து உள்ளவரை இந்த மாட்சியே நம் அன்றாட வாழ்வின் துன்பங்களையும் துயரங்களையும் சோதனைகளையும் தாங்கிக்கொள்ளும் ஆற்றலை நமக்கு அளவில்லாது தருகிறது. 

நற்செய்தியிலே கிறிஸ்து இந்த மாட்சியை தக்கவைத்துக்கொள்ள ஒரு வழியை நமக்கு கற்பிக்கிறார். வாழ்வின் ஒவ்வொரு தருணத்தையும் இறைவனின் கண்ணோட்டத்திலிருந்து காண கற்றுக்கொள்ளுங்கள், என்கிறார் கிறிஸ்து. அது வெறும் வரி செலுத்தும் ஒரு செயலாக இருந்தாலும் அதை எப்படி இறைவனின் கண்ணோட்டத்தில் காண்பது என்பதை நமக்கு எடுத்துக்காட்டாய் வழங்குகிறார். 

வாழ்வின் சாதாரண நிகழ்வுகளையும் கூட இறைவனின் கண்ணோட்டத்தில் கண்டு புரிந்துகொள்ளும் தன்மையை நமக்குள்ளே வளர்த்துக்கொள்ள வேண்டும். அவ்வாறு செய்யும் போது நன்மையோ தீமையோ, இன்பமோ துன்பமோ, வெற்றியோ தோல்வியோ, நிறைவோ குறைவோ எல்லாவற்றிலும் இறைவனின் மாட்சி மிளிர்வதை நம்மால் உணர முடியும், அதே மாட்சி மனிதர்களாகிய நம்மிடமும் இருப்பதை நம்மால் நம்ப முடியும். இறைவனின் கண்ணோட்டத்தில் வாழ்வை காண்போம், நமக்குள் குடியிருக்கும் இறைவனின் மாட்சியை கண்டுணர்வோம்!

BREAD FOR THE JOURNEY

Bread, the destiny and the Journey

19th Sunday in Ordinary time: 12th August, 2018

1 Kgs 19: 4-8; Eph 4:30 - 5:2; Jn 6: 41-51

When we were kids, I am speaking of almost three decades ago when eating at hotels or restaurants was still reserved for exquisite occasions, we would go on family pilgrimages that lasted over a couple of days. Apart from the spiritual value it had, I am reminded of the special preparations that preceded, specially those of preparing food for those days, which we would take along with us. There were certain types of rice preparations that would last for two days without the necessity of refrigeration or anything of that sort, but it meant extra care and special recipe at the time of preparation. As a kid, I remember I would get excited at the spread because the more it was, the longer the journey were to be. The preparation already gave us an idea of the duration of the journey. 

Get up and eat, the Angel tells Elijah, it is going to be a long journey! The food was not merely to be eaten for the moment, but it was a source of sustenance. The Word this Sunday invites us to look at the Bread for the Journey, which means to look at the bread, to look at the destiny that is long and to look at the journey itself which could be trying. But do not be preoccupied says the Lord, because, I am the bread for the journey, I am the destiny of the journey and I am the journey!

I am the bread for the journey.

I am the bread, not any bread but the bread that has come down from heaven, and only the bread that has come from heaven can prepare you for heaven. Remember that you are bred for heaven, that is, you are being nurtured for heaven and I am the bread that can transform you into true stuff meant for heaven. The longer the journey is, the stronger the food has to be; the more trying the journey is, the more nourishing the food has to be. As bread from heaven, I have within me not merely all sweetness but all that it takes for you to make this journey!

I am the destiny of your journey.

You have to reach me, and you cannot come to me unless my Father draws you to me! My father has drawn you, that is why we are here conversing with each other. I am the way and not merely the way, I am the destiny too! Fix your gaze on me and do not get lost on your way. There would be pitfalls all along: the grudge that you can have against your brothers and sisters will distract you from progress, the anger that you harbour at heart can weigh you down and dampen your spirit; the spite that you have for others might make you lose your vision ahead. If you have to reach me, you need to take care of your relationship with others - be friendly; you need to pay special attention to those in need - be kind; and you need to be loving towards those who do not love you - forgive! The Holy Spirit has given you the capacity to make all this possible, do not waste that power invested on you - make it up to me, I am waiting!

I am the journey.

Do you think I am sounding like a task master, having given you a task and waiting to see if you got it completed? No, I am not only the destiny of your journey, I AM your journey! I am the way, I have told you this! I am the way, I am the journey, and I am the bread for the journey, all you need to do is, look up to me, learn from me, feed on me and be nourished by me. Eat of me, and become like me. Drink from me and be filled with my Spirit. Eat and drink, that you may grow into my very self... that is the journey - growing to be me! It is a life long journey, a journey of becoming me!  

You have embarked upon this journey right from the time you received the Spirit from my Father, that was when the Father drew you to me! Now that you are well on the way, my child, realise that I am the journey and never stop your progress, that I am the destiny of your journey and do not take you eyes off me and that I am the bread for your journey, be strengthened by me and be transformed into me!

Just a bit of faith...

Saturday, 18th week in Ordinary time

August 11, 2018: Hab 1:12 - 2:4; Mt 17:14-20

Righteous shall live by their faith!

Faith... if we have it, we have everything; if we have everything but faith, there is  a lack that nothing else can complete. This is why Jesus expresses his displeasure in such plain terms to his disciples.

Today, many might complain as does the father to Jesus in the Gospel today: your disciples were not able to cure my son! They will be looking at us and deriding us, you so-called disciples of Christ you are not able to prove this, you who call yourselves Christians you are not able to safeguard yourself and how are you going to save the world, you who claim to be followers of Christ where is your God in all the evil that is taking place around you! We are bound to hear those voices: let us not ignore them. They have a point. They remind us, how powerful a little bit of faith can be. If we truly have faith, how much we can do for the good of the creation!

Prophet Habakkuk speaks of the great promises of the Lord and recommends the anxious awaiting hearts to faith and says, in faith the righteous ones shall see every word of the Lord come true! The delay that is involved in the designs of the Lord coming to pass, is a painful crisis to every expectant heart. We would be listed among the ranks of the righteous if we hold on in faith and have the patience of seeing the power of God shine through. It is like the new life that sprouts from a field so clueless!

A bit of faith will make us strong, enduring, persevering, resilient, patient, persistent, serene, unassailable... yes, just a bit of faith! That is all it takes.

கடுகளவு நம்பிக்கை...

ஆகஸ்ட் 11, 2018: அப 1:12 - 2:4; மத்  17: 14-20 

நேர்மையுடடையோர் தம் நம்பிக்கையால் வாழ்வடைவர். 

நம்பிக்கை... நம்பிக்கை நம்மிடம் இருந்தால் நம்மிடம் அனைத்தும் உள்ளன. ஆனால் அனைத்தும் இருந்தும் நம்பிக்கை நம்மிடம் இல்லையென்றால், முழுமைபெற ஏதோ ஒன்று நம்மிடம் குறையாகவே உள்ளது என்பதை நாம் உணர்கிறோம். இதையே கிறிஸ்து தன் சீடர்களிடம் வெளிப்படையாய் எடுத்துரைக்கிறார்.

இன்றைய நற்செய்தியில் 'உம் சீடர்களால் இதை செய்ய முடியவில்லை' என்று சுட்டிக்காட்டும் தந்தையை போல, இன்றும் நம்மை நோக்கி பலரும் பலவகையில், நமது குறையை சுட்டிக்காட்டக்கூடும்.  நீங்கள் கிறிஸ்துவின் சீடர்கள் என்கிறீர்கள் இதை உங்களால் சாதிக்க முடியுமா, கிறிஸ்துவர்கள் என்று உங்களையே அழைத்துக்கொள்ளும்  உங்களால் உங்களையே பாதுகாத்து கொள்ள முடியவில்லை நீங்கள் எப்படி உலகை மீட்கப்போகிறீர்கள், கடவுளின் மகனை பின்செல்பவர்கள் என்று கூறிக்கொள்கிறீர்களே உலகில் இவ்வளவு தீமை நடக்கும் போது உங்கள் கடவுள் எங்கே பதுங்கியுள்ளார், என்றெல்லாம் பல கேள்விக்கணைகள் நம்மை நோக்கி வரலாம். இவற்றை ஏற்க மறக்கவேண்டாம், அதே சமயம் அவற்றை கண்டு நடுங்கிடவும் வேண்டாம். நமது நம்பிக்கையின் உண்மையான ஆற்றல் என்னவென்று நமக்கு உணர்த்தும் கேள்விகள் இவை. இந்த நம்பிக்கை கடுகளவு நம்மிடம் இருந்தால், இந்த உலகிற்கும், உள்ள படைப்புக்கள் அனைத்திற்கும் எவ்வளவு நன்மை நாம் செய்யலாம்!

இறைவாக்கினர் அபகூக்கு இறைவனின் வாக்குறுதிகளை குறித்து நம்மிடம் பேசுகிறார். இந்த வாக்குறுதிகளுக்கு உரியவர்களாக நாம் தகுதி பெற வேண்டுமெனின் நம்மிடம் கடுகளவாவது நம்பிக்கை இருத்தல் வேண்டும் என்கிறது இன்றைய இறைவார்த்தை. நீதி பிறக்க காலம் தாழ்ந்து போகிறது, உண்மை உறங்குவது போல் தோன்றுகிறது, நன்மை ஒவ்வொரு நாளும் சாகடிக்கப்படுகிறது என்று நாம் உணரும் போது நமது ஆன்மா சோர்வடைவது மட்டுமல்லாமல் அவநம்பிக்கையில் சிக்க வாய்ப்பும் உள்ளது, அதை நாம் அறிந்து விழிப்போடிருக்க வேண்டும் என்று நாம் அழைக்கப்படுகிறோம். கட்டாந்தரையாய் இருக்கும் நிலமொன்றை துளைத்துக்கொண்டு முளைக்கும் சிறு துளிரை போல நமது நம்பிக்கை நமக்கு புதுவாழ்வு தரும் என்று நாம் நம்ப வேண்டும். 

ஆம், கடுகளவு நம்பிக்கை இருந்துவிட்டால் நம்மிடம் ஆற்றல், மனதிடம், துணிச்சல், எதையும் தாங்கும் நெஞ்சுரம், துவண்டுவிடா மனநிலை, இடைவிடா முயற்சி ஆகியவை பிறந்துவிடும், நாமும்  புதுவாழ்வு பெறுவோம்! ஏனெனில், நம்பிக்கையினால் நேர்மையாளர் வாழ்வடைவர். 

தருதலில் சிறந்த தருதல்

அகமகிழ்வோடு தருபவர்கள் பேறுபெற்றோர்!

ஆகஸ்ட் 10, 2018: : 2கொரி 9: 6-10; யோ 12: 24-26



நேற்று நடந்த ஒரு நிகழ்வோடு தொடங்குகிறேன். நான் செய்யும் தியாகங்களை எல்லாம் நான் அன்பு செய்கின்றவர் புரிந்துகொள்வதே இல்லை என்ற குறையோடு வந்த ஒருவரிடம் நான் பேச நேர்ந்தது...  நான் கூறியது: உண்மை தான், தியாகங்கள் உணரப்படாதபோது ஏற்படும் வலி கொடியதே. ஆனால் மற்றொரு உண்மையும் உண்டு... அன்பு உண்மையானது எனின், நான் செய்வது தியாகங்கள் என்றே எனக்கு தோன்றாது, என்றேன். அந்த நபருக்கு நான் சொன்னது ஏற்றுக்கொள்ள சற்று கடினமானதாக தான் இருந்தது ஆனால், என்னவொரு வியப்பு! நான் பேசிவிட்டு வந்தவுடன் முகநூல் நண்பர் ஒருவர் பகிர்ந்திருந்த காணொளி பதிவு ஒன்று என் கண்களில் பட்டது. அதன் சாரம் என்னவென்றால், ஓர் அன்னை தன் குழந்தைக்காக செய்யும் எதையும் தியாகம் என்று ஒருபோதும் கருதுவதில்லை ஏனெனில் அவளிடம் இருப்பது உண்மையான அன்பு! 

இன்று நாம் நினைவுக்கூரும் புனித லாரன்சு அவர்களின் சாட்சியமும், இறைவார்த்தை நமக்கு அளிக்கும் பாடமும் இதையே நமக்கு நினைவூட்டுகின்றன. தறுதலில் சிறந்த தருதல், தன்னையே தருதலாகும். தனக்குள்ள நிறைவிலிருந்து தருவது, தனக்குள்ள சிறிதிலிருந்து தருவது, தனக்கே இல்லாவிட்டாலும் துணிந்து தருவது என்ற இவை ஒன்றைவிட ஒன்று சிறந்த வகையான தருதல்களாகும். எனினும் அனைத்து வகை தருதல்களிலும் சிறந்த தருதல், தன்னையே தருதல் என்பதை இறைமகனும் இறைவார்த்தையும் நமக்கு தெள்ளத்தெளிவாக எடுத்துக்கூறுகின்றனர்.

இன்று புனித லாரன்ஸை நாம் நினைவு கூறும் போது தொடக்க கால திருச்சபையில் இந்த படிப்பினை எவ்வளவு ஆழமாக இருந்தது என்பதை சிந்திக்க அழைக்கப்படுகிறோம். இந்த தருதலாலே தான் பலரும் கிறிஸ்துவர்களை கண்டு வியந்தனர், அவர்களை போல வாழவேண்டும் என முடிவெடுத்தனர். புனித ஸ்தேவானாக இருந்தாலும் சரி, புனித பவுலாக இருந்தாலும் சரி, இவர்களுக்கு பிறகு வந்த நூற்றுக்கணக்கான கிறிஸ்தவ மறைசாட்சிகளாக இருந்தாலும் சரி, இன்றைய புனிதராம் லாரன்ஸாக இருந்தாலும் சரி... இவர்கள் அனைவருமே, அகமகிழ்வோடு தருபவர்கள் பேறுபெற்றோர் என்பதை ஆணித்தரமாய் நம்பினார்கள். தாங்கள் தர அழைக்கப்பட்டுள்ளோம் என்பதை யாரிடமிருந்து இவர்கள் கற்றுக்கொண்டார்கள்: தங்கள் ஒப்பில்லா தலைவரும் போதகருமான இறைமகன் கிறிஸ்துவிடமிருந்தே!

அவரே மண்ணில் விழுந்த கோதுமை மணி... தன்னையே மாய்த்து கொண்டு பலநூறு மடங்கு பலனை பிறருக்கு தரும் கோதுமை மணி. இதுவே கிறிஸ்துவின் வாழ்க்கை, கிறிஸ்தவ வாழ்க்கை. நாம் இதை புரிந்து கொள்வது எவ்வளவு அவசியம்! தருவதில் சிறந்த தருதல், தன்னையே தருதலே!

The Call to Give - a life of fruitfulness

Remembering St. Lawrence, the Deacon-Martyr

August 10, 2018: 2Cor 9: 6-10; Jn 12: 24-26



For some it would appear a coincidence, but for me it was a miracle. Just yesterday, I had to talk sense to someone who was complaining that the person's sacrifice was not respected by the one whom the person loved. I had to tell the person, it is true that lack of recognition of the sacrifices made, pains. But it is also true that true love does not consider those as sacrifices! The miracle was when I returned after the conversation and I came across a video-post shared on a friend's page describing how a mother's love never considers anything done for her child, a sacrifice but just an expression of love! 

The Word and the feast today reminds us of the same message: the best of all giving is, giving of oneself! Giving from one’s abundance, giving of whatever little that one has and giving even if one does not have enough for oneself – these are praise worthy acts in their respective order. But the highest of all giving is Self-giving. 

Celebrating the Deacon-martyr, St. Lawrence, we are reminded of the early Christian communities that were so much characterized by persons who were blessed with the special charism of Giving of their own selves, apart from what they possessed. They were cheerful givers, and so we find their numbers kept growing unprecedentedly. The very spirit that they radiated held captive those who saw them and multitudes were drawn to emulate it. They were ready and willing to die to themselves that Christ may come alive in them! 

St.Paul’s words were true in so many of those early Christians – “I live, it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me” (Gal 2:20) and “for me to live is Christ and to die is gain” (Phil 1:21). These were not mere catchy sayings; they were true lived experiences and we witness it in great martyrs like St. Stephen, the apostles and St. Paul himself. St. Lawrence follows suit very closely later in the third century. 

After all, they had but one model who had invaded and conquered their minds, hearts and spirits - Jesus the ultimate personification of self-giving - the grain of seed that chose to fall to the ground, that it may abound in its fruits: we are the fruits and let us be worthy of the grain which has borne us. 

உடன்படிக்கைக்கேற்ற உள்ளமொன்று!

ஆகஸ்ட் 9, 2018: எரே 31: 31-34; மத் 16: 13-23

தொடர்ந்து மூன்றாவது நாளாக இன்று உடன்படிக்கையை குறித்து சிந்திக்க நம்மை அழைக்கிறது இறைவார்த்தை. உடன்படிக்கை என்பது அடிப்படையிலே ஒரு உறவு! நமக்கும் நம் இறைவனாம் ஆண்டவருக்கும் இடையே உள்ள உறவு - இந்த உறவின் ஆழம் எதனால் அறியப்படுகிறது தெரியுமா? இந்த உடன்படிக்கையில் ஈடுபட்டுள்ள இருத்தரப்பினரும் ஒருவரை ஒருவர் எவ்வளவு ஆழமாய் அறிந்திருக்கிறார்கள் என்பதை பொறுத்தே! இறைவன் நம்மை முற்றிலும் அறிவார் என்பது நாம் அறிந்ததே... ஆனால் அவரை குறித்த நமது அறிவு, தெளிவு, உணர்வு, எப்படியுள்ளது என்பதே இங்கு கேள்வி! 

'இதோ, இறைவனை தெரிந்துகொள்ளுங்கள்' என்று ஒருவர் மற்றவரை பார்த்து சொல்லவேண்டிய அவசியம் இல்லாத நாள் ஒன்று வரும், ஏனெனில் ஒவ்வொருவரும் இறைவனை ஆழமாய் அறிந்து உணர்ந்திருப்பர் என்று எரேமியா கூறிய நாள் வந்தேவிட்டது... இயேசு பேதுருவை பார்த்து 'நீ பேறுபெற்றவன் ஏனெனில் இறைமகனை குறித்த இந்த அறிவு இறைவன் உனக்கு தந்ததே' என்று பாராட்டுவதை நாம் காண்கின்றோம்! ஆம், இறைவனே தம்மை நமக்கு வெளிப்படுத்தியிருக்கிறார்... நாம் பேறுபெற்றவர்களே!

இறைவன் தன்னையே நமக்கு இவ்வாறு வெளிப்படுத்தினாலும், நாம் வெகு விரைவில் அதை மறந்துவிடும் மக்களாய் இருப்பதனால் பல நேரங்களில் இறைவனோடு நமக்குள்ள உறவை நாம் ஓரந்தள்ளிவிடுகிறோம். கடவுளுக்கும் நமக்கும் எந்த ஒட்டோ உறவோ இல்லாதது போல் நடந்து கொள்கிறோம். இந்த மறக்கும் மனம், இந்த ஒவ்வாத உள்ளமே நம்மை நமது உடன்படிக்கையை விட்டு விலக செய்கிறது, ஆனால் இறைவனோ மறப்பதும் இல்லை, நம்மை விட்டு விலகுவதுமில்லை. 

இதோ இன்றும் நமக்கு ஒரு உறுதியளிக்கிறார்... 'உங்களுக்கு இந்த உடன்படிக்கைக்கேற்ற உள்ளமொன்று தருவேன்... பெற்றுக்கொள்ளுங்கள், மனம் மாறுங்கள், என்னிடம் திரும்பி வாருங்கள், எத்தனை தொலைவு நீங்கள் சென்றிருந்தாலும் என்னை விட்டு விலகமுடியாது ஏனெனில், நான் உங்களை விட்டு விலகுவதில்லையே!' என்று நம்மை அன்போடு அழைக்கிறார்... அவரது மக்களாய், அவரது மந்தையை சேர்ந்தவர்களாய், அவரைப்போன்றே அன்பின் உள்ளம் பெற்றவர்களாய், நமது உடன்படிக்கையின் உறவிற்கு திரும்புவோம், புத்துயிர் பெறுவோம். 

A heart worthy of the Covenant

Thursday, 18th week in Ordinary time

August 9, 2018: Jer 31: 31-34; Mt 16: 13-23

For the third day today, the discussion about the Covenant of the Lord continues. The covenant is fundamentally a relationship between the Lord and us, God's people, God's children! And the gauge with which one's connectedness to the covenant is measured is the depth or the intimacy of the mutual knowledge of the partners of the covenant. There is no doubt, the Lord knows us through and through. What about our knowing the Lord?

The day will come when you will not have to teach your loved ones to know God...for every one will know God in those days, promises the Lord. Jesus applauds Peter, saying his knowledge of Christ was exceptional, because it was God given! The day has come when Peter knew who the Lord was, as we read in Jeremiah.

The reality is, though God reveals Godself to us and we get to know God so intimately, our memories are so very fickle and short lived. We give into our human tendencies so easily and readily as if there were nothing so great between us and God! Our memories may be thus short, but not God's. God forgives, waits and readily renews the covenant that God made with us. 

The Lord promises to give us a new heart, a heart of flesh, a heart that takes after the sensibilities of God, a heart that sees as God does, a heart that hears as God does, a heart that feels as God does, a heart that loves as God loves... a heart that is worthy of the covenant that God has made with us.

எஞ்சியோரும், மற்றோரும்!

ஆகஸ்ட் 8, 2018: எரே 31: 1-7; மத் 15: 21-28

நான் உங்கள் கடவுளாய் இருப்பேன், நீங்கள் என் மக்களாய் இருப்பீர்கள், என்று தன் மக்களோடு தான் செய்த உடன்படிக்கையை இறைவன் என்றுமே மறந்ததில்லை. மக்கள் எத்தனை முறை தவறுகள் செய்து அவரை விட்டு விலகினாலும், அவரோ அம்மக்களை திரும்ப அழைத்து அணைத்த வண்ணமே இருக்கிறார். இதையே இன்று எரேமியாவும் நமக்கு எடுத்து சொல்கிறார். ஆனால் இறுதியில் இறைவனின் நன்மை தனத்தை அனுபவித்து மகிழ இருப்பவர்கள் யார் என்று இறைவார்த்தை நமக்கு கூறும்போது, எஞ்சியோரும் மற்றோருமே இறுதியாய் மகிழ்வார்கள் என்று நம்மை எச்சரிக்கிறது! 

எஞ்சியோர் என்பவர்கள் இந்த உலகமே ஒரு வழியில் செல்ல, தாங்கள் மட்டும் நிதானித்து சரி எது பிழை எது, இறைவனுக்கு ஏற்றது எது ஏற்பில்லாதது எது, என்று சிந்தித்து முடிவெடுத்து தங்களுக்கு அளிக்கப்பட்ட வழியிலிருந்து தவறாமல் இறுதியாய் எஞ்சி நிற்பவர்களாவர்.   

மற்றோர் என்பவர்கள் பொதுவாக யாராலும் முக்கியத்துவம் தரப்படாது, தாங்களே இறைவனுக்கு உரியவர்கள் என்று தங்களையே உயர்திக்கொள்ளும் கூட்டத்திலிருந்து மாறுபட்டு, கடவுளையே தாங்கள் தான் குத்தகைக்கு எடுத்துவிட்டதுபோல் மார்தட்டி திரியும் மூளையற்ற மனிதர்களிடமிருந்து தனித்து விடுபட்ட எளிமையான மக்கள்... இவர்களின் எளிமையில் இறைவனை மட்டுமே நம்பும் குணத்தை பெற்றவர்கள், இறைவன் முன் தாங்கள் ஒன்றுமில்லை என்பதை உண்மையில் உணர்ந்து நம்புபவர்கள், உண்மையையம், அன்பையும் இறைவனின் இரக்கத்தையும் மட்டுமே முதன்மைபடுத்தி வாழ்பவர்கள். 

இந்த எஞ்சியோரும் மற்றோரும் மட்டுமே இறுதியில் இறைவனின் உடன்படிக்கைக்கு உரியவர்கள் ஆவார்கள் என்று விளக்கும் இன்றைய வாசகங்கள் நமக்கு தரும் பாடம் ஒன்றே: உலகத்தின் போக்கின் படி ஒழுகாதீர்கள், மாறாக கிறிஸ்துவில் மாற்றம் பெற்று புது படைப்பாகுங்கள்! 

The Remnant and the Rest

Wednesday, 18th week in Ordinary time 

August 8, 2018: Jer 31: 1-7; Mt 15: 21-28

The Lord renews the covenant with the people  inspite  of their failures because the Lord had always loved  them with an everlasting love. Today the Word warns us that those who will finally taste the fruits of God's faithfulness are the remnant and the rest of the people who come by and stick to the Lord.

The remnant are those who choose to differ from the mainstream inspired  by a genuine conviction and sincere effort to be integral. While the entire world runs after some things that they consider important, even more important than the absolutes like God, love and humanity, there are a few who remain strong, unmoved and totally committed to truth. These form the remnant that pleases God.

The rest are those who are least expected to be favoured in the eyes of the Lord. The world has its own criteria of judgement but the Lord has a totally different set of criteria... single minded dedication to the Lord, genuine love for God's people and authentic life after the mind of God. Whatever the world may say, these become the beloved of God!

The message is simple and straightforward but highly challenging: Do not conform to the world;  instead be transformed in Christ into new beings!

The Courage to Wait

Tuesday, 18th week in Ordinary time

August 7, 2018: Jer 30: 1-2,12-15,18-22; Mt 14: 22-36

Waiting seems an undue demand on persons these days. Traffic, queues, public modes of transport...everywhere this is the feeling we see invariably - people resent to wait. With the Lord, there is no other way to peace than to wait... for God abides in eternity!

Jeremiah today speaks of an imminent and wholesome intervention by God on behalf of the people of Israel. All this while he would be taking to task those people who spoke of a positive change of the times, he would find fault and challenge them. But now they are all silenced, but Jeremiah speaks of it: restoring, rebuilding and raising Israel back from its dust, to be God's people.

Jesus' intention was to state without doubt the fact that whatever happens the Lord never leaves us- be it storming sea or the threatening world around, the last word is the Lord's and we need to wait till the last word is said! It takes enormous courage to do that. 

Our patience runs dry, our ground appears to give way, our trust shifts focus and our minds begin to question. When every thing around us seems to be going wrong, can we just hold the hands of the Lord and keep walking come what may... that requires the courage to wait!
