Compassion - the quality closest to Sanctity

WORD 2day: 3rd February, 2018

Friday, 4th week in Ordinary Time
1 Kgs 3: 4-13; Mk 6: 30-34

"An understanding heart to guide God's people", is what Solomon asks of the Lord... and that is what he was given! We see Jesus, who understood the tiredness of his apostles and counselled them to relax. We see Jesus looking at the people and understanding their need, their thirst, their yearning for life...he was filled with compassion! 

Compassion, which comes from com-pati (latin),  to have the same feeling as someone, is basically an understanding of the other! When someone next to me is undergoing a crisis, when someone in my vicinity is going through a suffering, when persons in front of my eyes are experiencing a situation that stifles their lives... can I really feel with them, can I really suffer with them? That would be compassion! That is the sensibility that Jesus exhibits, that is the sensibility that Christ requires of us, if we have to call ourselves Christians! 

A compassionate person alone can be a person of God. When I feel depressed, when I feel oppressed, when I feel spent, when I feel exploited, when I feel angry, when I feel disappointed, only a person with compassion can feel exactly what I feel. The person becomes a person of God, when the person feels what I feel and take me to where God wants me to move on. Yes, compassion is crying with those who cry and laughing with those who laugh, but it is not drowning with those who drown and decaying with those who decay! Compassion has to be a Godly presence of suggesting the right thing at the right time!

Compassion is the quality closest to sanctity! To be Christ-ians, we cannot but be compassionate; like Solomon, let us ask the Lord, and the Lord will grant us a heart that is wise and understanding, loving and compassionate.

பிப்ரவரி 2: சோதனைகள் - விழப்போகிறாயா? எழப்போகிறாயா?

இயேசுவை காணிக்கையாக ஒப்புக்கொடுத்த திருவிழா 

எங்களை சோதனையில் விழவிடாதேயும் என்று ஒவ்வொரு நாளும் செபிக்கின்றோம்... சோதனைகள் இன்றி மனித வாழ்வு இல்லை. இந்த சோதனைகளின் மத்தியில் தான் நமது வாழ்வின் உண்மையான தரம் விளங்குகின்றது. இன்று கோவிலிலே அந்த அற்புத குழந்தையை கையில் ஏந்தி நிற்கும் மரியன்னையின் வாழ்வில் தான் எத்தனை எத்தனை சோதனைகள்... ஆனால் எதுவுமே அவரை பாதிக்காதது போல அவரால் எப்படி வாழ முடிந்தது? அதுவே அவர் நமக்கு தரும் மாபெரும் பாடம்: தன்னையே முழுமையாய் இறைவனிடம் சரணாக்கியதால் வந்த ஆழ்மன அமைதி அது. எத்தனை துன்ப அலைகள் சூழ்ந்தாலும் ஆழ்கடலை போல அமைதியாய் வாழும் நிலை - எவ்வளவு அழகானதொரு எடுத்துக்காட்டு!

சோதனைகள் வரும் போது விழுவதும் எழுவதும் எதை பொருத்தது தெரியுமா? அந்த சோதனைகளை எந்த மனநிலையோடு நாம் எதிர்கொள்ளுகின்றோம் என்பதை பொருத்ததே. என் வாழ்வில் வரும் சோதனைகள் எல்லாம் என்னை புடமிடவே, தூய்மைப்படுத்தவே, செம்மையாக்கவே, உறுதியூட்டவே என்று உணர்ந்து அவற்றை எதிர்கொண்டால்  என் மனம் நிதானமடைகின்றது. அத்தனை குழப்பங்கள் இருந்தும் அமைதியாய் காணப்படும் தூய யோசேப்பை பாருங்கள்... ஆழ்மன அமைதிக்கு மற்றுமொரு அருமையான எடுத்துக்காட்டு. 

வரும் ஒவ்வொரு சோதனையும் என்னை விழச்செய்யும் அல்லது வீறுகொண்டு எழச்செய்யும். விழுந்துகிடக்கின்றேனா அல்லது எழுந்துநடக்கின்றேனா என்பதை பொறுத்தே நான் இறைவனின் பிள்ளையா இல்லையா என்பது விளங்கும். இன்று காணிக்கையாக்கப்படும் அந்த குழந்தை கடவுளின் மகன் என்பதை தன் பிறப்பினால் மட்டுமல்ல, வாழ்வின் ஒவ்வொரு தருணத்திலும் விளங்க செய்தார் - தன்னையே முழுவதும் இறைவனுக்கு சரணாக்கியதன் வழியாக. அவரை விட சோதனைகளால் உறுதிபெற்று எழுந்து ஒளிவீசிய ஒரு எடுத்துக்காட்டை நம்மால் காண முடியுமா?

இவற்றால் தான் இந்நாளை உலக துறவறத்தார் நாளாக கொண்டாட திருச்சபை நம்மை அழைக்கின்றது. துறவறத்தாருக்காக மட்டுமல்ல, இறைவனின் பிள்ளைகளாகிய நம் ஒவ்வொருவருக்காகவும் இன்று செபிப்போம். நம் வாழ்வை இறைவனிடம் முழுமையாய் சரணாக்கி வாழ்ந்து, ஆழ்மன அமைதியை நாம் ஒவ்வொருவரும் கண்டுக்கொள்ள வேண்டுமென்று செபிப்போம்.

Tests, Results and Outcomes!

THE WORD AND THE FEAST 

The Presentation of the Lord: 2nd February, 2018

Mal 3:1-4; Heb 2: 14-18; Lk 2: 22-40

Do not bring us to the test we pray everyday,  but our life is full of tests. It is in and through these tests the real quality of our life is brought to the fore. Mary at the temple today stands model to this brave spirit of a God-filled person: to face everything with a serenity that God alone gives!

More than the results of the tests,  what matters is the manner in which we go through it. They are not mere situations to be overcome but are experiences to learn from. The true result is not whether you succeed or not;  but that you come out of it better,  refined,  polished,  purified, and made more whole. St. Joseph after every crisis that he faces comes out more flexible at the hands of God. Another example of serenity!

The marks of these tests should be seen in your capacity to offer yourself into God's hands more and more. The effect of the tests could either make you stronger or break your spirit... the mark of a God-filled person is to come out of it ever more stronger in his or her will to surrender to the Lord. That child presented today at the temple,  will grow  up to be the best ever example of someone who grew out of every test and remained faithful to his consecration!

This is the reason the Church wishes to remember this day as the world day of consecrated life... not just for the consecrated men and women of the world, but for each and every one of us let us pray that we shall grow evermore capable of living our lives with serenity that comes from an absolute surrender to God!

பிப்ரவரி 1: இறையாட்சியின் பணியாளர்களாய்

இன்று இறையாட்சிக்கான  எனது பங்கை செய்துவிட்டேனா?

ஆட்சியில் அமரவிருக்கும் தன் மகன் சாலமோனுக்கு தனது இறுதி அறிவுரையை வழங்குகிறார் தாவீது. அவ்வாறே தனது தூதர்களாய் செல்லவிருக்கும் தன் அப்போஸ்தலர்களுக்கு தனது அறிவுரையை வழங்குகிறார் இயேசு கிறிஸ்து. இந்த இரண்டு அறிவுரைகளிலும் ஒரு ஆழமான கருத்து இழையோடுவதை நாம் கவனிக்க வேண்டும். 

இவ்விரு அறிவுரைகளில் மட்டுமல்ல இறைவார்த்தை முழுவதிலும், மனுவுருவான இறைவார்த்தையாம் கிறிஸ்துவின் வாழ்விலும் இதே அறிவுரை தான் விஞ்சி நிற்கின்றது: எல்லாவற்றிற்கும் மேல் இறையாட்சியை நாடுங்கள், மற்றனைத்தும் உங்களுக்கு சேர்த்து கொடுக்கப்படும் (மத் 6:33), என்பதே அது. 

அப்போஸ்தலர்களும், முதல் கிறிஸ்துவ சமூகமும், தொடக்க கால  இறையூழியர்களும் இதையே தங்கள் உயிர் மூச்சாய் கருதினர். தங்கள் உடல் நலமோ, சுக வாழ்க்கையோ, இன்பமோ துன்பமோ, ஏன் உயிரும் கூட அவர்களுக்கு பெரிதாக தோன்றவில்லை. இறையாட்சி மண்ணில் மலர வேண்டும் என்ற ஒரே எண்ணம் அவர்களை ஆட்கொண்டிருந்தது.

சாலமோனும் கூட தனது தந்தையின் மகிமையிலிருந்து விழ நேர்ந்தது அவர் இறைவன் அமைத்த  ஆட்சி என்ற எண்ணத்தை மறந்தபோது தான் என்பதை நாம் நினைவில் கொள்ளவேண்டும். நாம் இறையாட்சி என்ற ஒரு புள்ளியை மறந்துவிட்டோம் என்றால் நாம் செய்யும் அதிமிக பெரிய பணிகள் கூட அதன் உண்மை பொருளை இழந்து விடும். நமது பெருமைக்காகவும், நமது சிறு ஆதிக்க வட்டாரங்களை தக்க  வைத்துக்கொள்ளும் முயற்சியாகவும், நமது சிறு அரசுகளை கட்டி எழுப்பும் செயல்பாடுகளாகவும் மாறிவிடும். இறையாட்சியின் மீது நமது கண்களை பதியவைத்து நாம் சின்னஞ்சிறு செயல்கள் செய்தாலும் அது இறைவனின் முன்னிலையில் மாபெரும் சாட்சியமாய் உருவெடுக்கும் என்பதில் எந்த ஐயமும் இல்லை. 

இறையாட்சிக்கான நமது முன்னெடுப்பை உறுதி செய்வோம். நீதியின் அரசை, அன்பின் அரசை, சகோதரத்துவத்தின் அரசை, இறைவனின் அரசை இம்மண்ணில் நிறுவிட நம் அன்றாட வாழ்வில் சிறு சிறு செயல்களை இறையாட்சியின் மனநிலையோடு செய்வோம். ஒவ்வொரு நாளும், நாம் ஒவ்வொருவரும் இறையாட்சியின் பணியாளர்கள் என்பதை மறவாது வாழ்வோம்.

அனுதினமும் இந்த கேள்வியை நமக்குள்ளே எழுப்பிக்கொள்வோம்: இன்று இறையாட்சிக்கான எனது பணியை நான் செய்துவிட்டேனா?

Done your part for the Reign of God today?

Thursday, 4th week in Ordinary Time

1 Kgs 2:1-4, 10-12; Mk 6:7-13

David gives instruction  to young Solomon as he is about to take over the Kingdom. Jesus gives instruction to his apostles as they are about to set out for a mission! The common element is the instruction and there is a common thread that runs through the two sets of instructions too. 

For that matter the whole of the Word of God, and Jesus as the Word of God made flesh, always has this ready message to give us: Seek first the Reign of God, and all other things will be given unto you (Mat 6:33). 

The apostles, the first christian communities, the early missionaries... every one of them was filled with this same zeal. Health. wealth, pleasure, not even life mattered more than the Reign of God for them! 

Solomon would later fall from the glory of his father, precisely because he would lose sight of the Reign that God wanted to establish. When we lose sight of the Reign, even the most beautiful things we do in the name of God, will become things done for our own glory and our own petty kingdoms. The more we grow conscious of our call to live for the Reign, the more our work and our efforts would make sense. 

Let us renew our commitment towards the Reign of God today - the Reign of justice, love, peace, brotherhood and sisterhood... in short SHALOM, Wholeness, God's presence! Let us make present these in our little way everyday, that would be our part towards the Reign for today!

சனவரி 31: வழக்கமானவைகளில் இறைவனை காண

தவறுதலும் தவறவிடுதலும் இயல்பே எனினும்...

தவறுதல், பாவம் செய்தல், நம் குறைகளில் வீழ்தல் என்பன இயல்பான அனுபவங்கள் தான். எனினும் விழுந்த தவறிலேயே இருப்பேன் என்று எண்ணுதல் இறைவனின் பிள்ளைகள் என்ற நிலைக்கு ஒவ்வாததாகும். தாவீது இறைவனின் தேர்ந்துகொள்ளப்பட்ட மகனாக இருந்தும் தவறுகள் செய்தார், அதை திரும்ப திரும்பவும் செய்தார். அனால் அதன் பின்விளைவுகளை சந்தித்த போது தன் பிழையை உணர்ந்துகொண்டார். பல வேளைகளில் இப்படியே, என்றும் நம்மோடு இருக்கும் இறைவனை மறந்துவிட்டு ஏதாவது குழப்பத்தை நமக்கே வருவித்துக்கொண்ட பிறகு அவரை தேடி அலறியடித்து செல்வதை நாம் வழக்கமாகவே கொண்டுள்ளோம். 

இயேசுவின் வாழ்வில் நடந்த அனுபவத்தை பாருங்கள்... இறைமகன் அவர்களோடு இருப்பதை அவர்களால் உணரக்கூட முடியவில்லை. ஏனெனில் இயேசு யார் என்று அவர்கள் அளவுக்கு அதிகமாய் அறிந்திருந்தார்கள். இவ்வளவு சாதாரணமானவரா இறைவனின் மகனாக இருக்க முடியும்? இவர் தச்சனின் மகன் அல்லவா...வழக்கமான சாமானிய மனிதன் அல்லவா என்று புத்திசாலித்தனமாக தங்களுக்குள்ளே சொல்லிக்கொண்டார்கள். அந்த வழக்கமானவற்றில் தான் இறைவனை தவறவிட்டுவிட்டார்கள்.

இறைவனின் ஆழ்ந்த பிரசன்னம் எல்லா வேளைகளிலும் நம்மோடே உள்ளது என்பதை நாம் அறிந்து புரிந்து உணர்ந்து வாழ அழைக்கப்பட்டுள்ளோம். நமது வழக்கமான நாட்களில், அனுதின அனுபவங்களில், சாதாரண மனிதர்களில், ஆரவாரமற்ற நிகழ்வுகளில் இறைவனையும், இறைவனின் செய்தியையும் தேடி சந்திக்க கற்றுக்கொள்வோம். இல்லையெனில் தாவீதை போல நேரம் தாழ்ந்த பிறகே உணர்ந்து வருந்துவோம். 

வழக்கமானவை என்று நாம் கருதும் எல்லா சூழலையும் மனிதர்களையும் மதிப்போடு அணுகிப்பார்ப்போம், இறைவனை கண்டுகொள்வோம். 

To behold the Lord in the Ordinariness of Life

Wednesday, 4th week in Ordinary Time

2 Sam 24: 2,8-17; Mk 6: 1-6

Falling into sin, giving into our imperfections, are a common human experience. The most problematic experience is when we have fallen and we do not want to get out of it. David was a chosen one of God. He was blessed with experiences and graces that no one else had been blessed with... but he falls and he falls repeatedly. 

When things go wrong and miseries come his way he realises his folly. The Lord's grace is ever present with us - but it is possible that we do not realise it or we refuse to behold it in our obstinacy. 

The ordinariness of Jesus was an obstacle for the people to accept the great things that he was upto. They were not ready to notice or behold anything divine in Jesus, because they knew him too well! They were fixated in their idea that the ordinariness in which God's glory was set to shine, did not appeal to them.

It is important that we learn to behold the Lord's graceful presence, in the ordinariness of our lives; if not, it will be too late when we realise it, as it happens to David. Let us resolve to be ready and eager to behold the presence of the Lord in the ordinariness of our days. 

சனவரி 30: வித்தியாசமானவர்களாய் ...

கடவுளின் கண்ணோட்டத்திலிருந்து வாழ்ந்து பழகு 

சில நேரங்களில் சிலர் வித்தியாசமானவர்களாய் தோன்றுவதுண்டு. இன்று தாவீது அவருடன் இருந்தவர்களுக்கு அவ்வாறே தோன்றுகிறார். தாவீதை கொள்ளவேண்டுமென துடித்த அவரது மகன் அப்சலோம் போரிலே இறந்த செய்தி தாவீதையும் அவருடன் இருந்தோரையும் வந்து சேருகின்றது! ஒரு எதிரி ஒழிந்தான் என்று அவர்கள் கூடி கொண்டாட, தாவீதோ கண்கலங்கி மாளா துக்கத்தில் ஆழ்ந்துவிடுகிறார். 

கிறிஸ்துவும் சற்று வித்தியாசமாகவே இன்று தோன்றுகின்றார். எங்கு நோக்கினும் மக்கள் கூட்டமாய் இருக்க எல்லா பக்கங்களிலிருந்தும் உரசலும் அழுத்தமுமாய் இருக்க, என்னை யார் தொட்டது என்று இயேசு கேட்கும் கேள்வி சற்று அர்த்தமற்றதாய் வித்தியாசமானதாய் தான் தோன்றியிருக்கும். இறந்த சிறுமியின் அறைக்குள் செல்லும் முன் அவள் இறக்க வில்லை தூங்குகிறாள் என்று அவர் கூறியது இறக்கும் போது உடன் இருந்தவர்களுக்கு வித்தியாசமானதாக தான் இருந்திருக்கும். 

ஆனால் மற்றவர்களிடமெல்லாம் இல்லாத ஒன்று, மற்றவர்கள் எல்லாம் காண தவறிய ஒன்று, மற்றவர்களுக்கெல்லாம் தோன்றாத ஒன்று கிறிஸ்துவிடமும் தாவீதிடமும் இருந்தது என்பதே இதற்கு காரணம். கடவுளின் கண்ணோட்டத்திலிருந்து அனைத்தையும் பார்க்கும் திறனே அது!  

தன்னை கொள்ள நினைத்த ஒருவன் இறந்திருந்தாலும், கடவுளின் கண்ணோட்டத்திலிருந்து பார்த்த தாவீதுக்கு கடவுள் அளித்த கொடையாம் ஒரு மகனை இழந்தது தான் தெரிந்தது. அந்த நோயுற்ற பெண் இயேசுவை தொட்டபோது எந்த அன்போடும், எதிர்நோக்கோடும், நம்பிக்கையோடும் தொட்டாரோ அது இயேசுவுக்கு தெளிவாய் தென்பட்டது, அதை மற்றவர்கள் அறிந்திருக்க வாய்ப்பு இல்லைதான். அந்த இறந்த பெண்ணை கடவுளின் காணோட்டத்திலிருந்து பார்த்த போது ஒரு இறந்த உடலாக அல்ல ஆனால் இறைவனின் மகிமை வெளிப்பட ஒரு மாபெரும் வாய்ப்பாகவே அவருக்கு தென்பட்டது. 

நம் வாழ்வின் வெற்றி தோல்விகளையும், இன்ப துன்பங்களையும், தடைகளையும் தடங்களையும், சோதனைகளையும் வாய்ப்புகளையும், அல்லல்களையும்  எல்லா அனுபவங்களையும் இறைவனின் கண்ணோட்டத்தில் காணக் கற்றுக்கொண்டால் நமது வாழ்வு வேறுபட்டே தோன்றும்... அடுத்தவருக்கு வித்தியாசமானதாகவும், நமக்கு உன்னதமாயும் தோன்றும். இறைவனின் கண்ணோட்டத்திலிருந்து வாழ்வை வாழ தொடங்குவோம், வித்தியாசமானவர்களாய் வாழ்வை அணுகுவோம்... இறைவன் நம்மோடே!

Does not matter if you appear strange!

WORD 2day: 30th January, 2018

Tuesday, 4th week in Ordinary Time

2 Sam 18: 9-10,14,24-25,30-19:3; Mk 5: 21-43

Sometimes we might appear 'strange'. David does, in today's first reading! To those with David, it seemed well deserved that Absalom met with such an end for all that he had done to David; but for David, it was unbearable; he cries inconsolably. He appears strange for the people who wanted to celebrate the victory. 

Jesus looks strange, when he asks who is that who touched him, when there was a whole multitude that was crushing him! He appears strange when he tells those people at Jairus' house, 'the child is sleeping.' In fact, the disciple expressed their surprise and the people ridiculed him. 

There is an element here that those around did not see, which made it natural for Jesus (and David) but, for the people it was strange. The element is, the capacity to see everything from the eyes of God and feel everything from the perspective of God! 

When David looked at it from the perspective of God, it was his loving child who was dead! When Jesus felt the touch from the perspective of God, it was a touch of intense prayer and when He saw the child on the death bed, it was God's glory yet to be revealed.

When we look at our own successes, failures, difficulties, trials, temptations and struggles from the eyes of God - they will have completely different meanings - 'strange' for others, 'miracles' for ourselves! Begin to live your life from the perspective of God, it does not matter if you appear strange!

30th January, 2018: Don Bosco - A Man who lives on in his holiness 

Our Challenge: That we come to understand our special calling from the Lord, live our life to the full and march ahead towards sanctity

Our Prayer:

Lord God, thank you for Don Bosco, a man who lives on even today in his holiness, even after 130 years of his death. You gave him the grace to realise his special calling and dedicate his entire life for the salvation of the young. Grant that we may be attentive to the Spirit that we may understand our calling, feel your inspiration and march with determination towards sanctity, by serving those to whom you send us. We make this prayer through Christ Our Lord. Amen
