MARY HELP OF CHRISTIANS - 150 - NOVENA - Day 1

2018 - is a very special year! It is 150 years since the Basilica of Mary Help of Christians in Valdocco, Turin was consecrated, in 1868. The Basilica was commissioned by the Blessed Mother herself, through her beloved apostle - St. John Bosco! The title itself has a great history to narrate but most of all, the years,the decades and the centuries of experience of the nearness and protection of the Blessed Mother to a suffering and persecuted son, daughter or people of God, is what matters most. This is why the Mother told Don Bosco, about the Basilica: This is my house, from here shall my glory go forth! 

The title Help of Christians, more than anything refers to the special protection that the Blessed Mother offers to those who love her most beloved Son, our Lord Jesus Christ. As true sons and daughters of our Blessed Mother, we are called to love Jesus our Lord and follow his steps. We shall pray the Novena together this year... loving children of the Help of Christians, and grow closer to our Saviour, Lord Jesus Christ. 

15th May, 2018 - Day 1

Hail, Star of the sea, Blessed Mother of God, 

ever fruitful Virgin, happy gate of heaven.

BIBLE READING:

“And a great sign appeared in heaven: A woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars.” (Rev. 12: 1)

“And the dragon was angry against the woman: and went to make war with the rest of her seed, who keep the commandments of God and have the testimony of Jesus Christ. (Rev. 12: 17)

Mary the Blessed Mother is an unparalleled distinguishing mark of an authentic faithful, who promises to remain faithful unto death, to the One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church.

PRAYER: 

O Virgin Most Holy, powerful help of Christians, I confidently appeal to the throne of your mercy. Hear the prayers of this poor sinner that begs your help, so I may always flee from sin and from the occasions of sin. Behold the first grace that I ask from this novena. Amen

மே 15: ஒரே இறைவனின் ஒரே ஆவியானவர்!

அவரை சார்ந்தவர்களாய், அவரால் அனுப்பப் பட்டவர்களாய் 

தி ப. 20: 17-27; யோ 17: 1-11

பவுலடிகளாரும் இயேசுவும் இருவரும் ஒரே மனநிலையோடு இன்று காணப்படுகிறார்கள்... விடைப்பெரும் மனநிலை. பவுலடிகளாருக்கு வரவிருக்கும் துன்பங்கள் தெளிவாய் தெரிந்தது; அவ்வாறே இயேசுவுக்கும் வரவிருக்கும் பாடுகளும் இறப்பும் கண்முன்னே நின்றது! அவர்களுக்கு கொடுக்கப்பட்ட கடமையை நிறைவேற்றிய உணர்வு இருவருக்கும் நிறைந்திருக்கிறது. தங்களுக்கு அளிக்கப்பட்ட பணியை தொடர்ந்து வருபவர்களுக்கு வார்த்தளிக்கும் மனநிலையோடே இருவரும் பேசுகின்றனர் - பவுலடிகளார் அவரை தொடர்ந்து வரும் மூப்பர்களிடமும், கிறிஸ்து தன் அப்போஸ்தலர்களிடமும். தொடரவேண்டிய அப்பணியின் ஒற்றுமையை உறுதி செய்பவராக ஒருவரே இருக்கிறார்: தூய ஆவியானவர். நம்மை படைத்து அழைத்து அனுப்பும் ஒரே இறைவனின் ஒரே ஆவியானவர். 

இயேசு கிறிஸ்துவில் காணப்பட்ட அதே ஆவியானவர், கிறிஸ்து தன் அப்போஸ்தலர்களும், பவுலடிகளாருக்கும், பவுலடிகளார் தன்னை தொடர்ந்து வந்த மூப்பர்களுக்கும் அளித்த அதே ஆவியானவர், வல்லமையும், அன்பும், கட்டுப்பாடும் தரும் அதே ஆவியானவர். இன்று நம்மையே நாம் கேட்டுக்கொள்ள வேண்டிய கேள்வி ஒன்றுண்டு... நாம் நம்மை அனுப்பினவருடைய சுவடுகளில் தான் பயணித்துக் கொண்டிருக்கிறோமா? என்னை அழைத்து, எனக்கென ஒரு பணி கொடுத்து அதை வாழ்ந்து காட்டி, எனக்கு முன் சென்று, தான் விட்டு சென்ற பணியை நான் நிறைவு செய்வேன் என்று எண்ணில் விசுவாசம்கொண்டு காத்திருக்கும் என் இறைவனாம் கிறிஸ்துவின் பாதையில் தான் நான் சென்றுகொண்டிருக்கிறேனா? அவரது மனநிலையை எண்ணில் உறுதி செய்யும் அவர் ஆவியை எனக்குள் இயக்கம் கொள்ள நான் அனுமதிக்கிறேனா? அவராகவே நான் மாற என்னை உருவாக்கும் அந்த ஆவியை நான் எனக்குள் உணர்கிறேனா?

ஒரே இறைவனின் ஒரே ஆவியை பெற்ற ஒரே இறைமக்கள் நாம்... அவரை நோக்கி தொடர்ந்து பயணிப்போம்!

The One Spirit of the One who sends!

Tuesday,  7th week of Eastertide

15th May,  2018: Acts 20: 17-27; Jn 17: 1-11

We see both Paul and Jesus in a parting mood;  Paul is sensing an imminent trouble and Jesus is sure of a fast approaching end. But both have a sense of having completed the task given to them. Apart from that both have a note of passing on the mission to those around them - Paul to the presbyters and Jesus to the apostles. There is one thing in both cases that ensures the continuity: the One Spirit.

The same Spirit that was in Jesus,  he gave to his apostles,  to Paul and then Paul to the elders... the Spirit of courage and strength. As Paul would explain in 2 Tim 1:7, the Spirit of power,  of love and of self discipline. Power, which makes us fearless;  love which makes us feel for the others;  and self discipline which enables us to do the will of the One who calls us,  come what may!

It is important to ask ourselves today: am I really on the footsteps of the One who has called me, who has walked this path, who has showed me the way and who counts on me to bring to completion the task that he commenced with? Is the Spirit given to me, truly at work within me and through me? Am I allowing that Spirit to transform me to resemble the One in whose image and likeness, in whose Words I am formed?

Let us keep moving closer to the Spirit...that we discover who we are and grow to be exactly that!

மே 14: நானே உங்களை தேர்ந்துகொண்டேன்

புனித மத்தியாஸ் திருத்தூதர் விழா 

தி.ப. 1: 15-17, 20-26; யோ 15: 16

உண்மை உறவுகள் தேர்ந்துகொள்ளப்படுகின்றன, திணிக்கப்படுவதில்லை. ஒருவரோடு உறவுகொள்ள நான் எண்ணும் போது, அவரோடு உறவுகொள்ள நான் முடிவெடுக்கிறேன், அதை தேர்ந்துகொள்கிறேன் அதை வெளிப்படுத்துகிறேன்... அதோடு எனது பங்கு முடிந்துவிடுகின்றது... என்னோடு உறவுகொள்வதா வேண்டாமா என்று அடுத்தவர் தான் முடிவு செய்ய வேண்டும். இப்படி பிறப்பதே உண்மையான உறவு, பொருளுள்ள உறவு, முதிர்ச்சிபெற்ற உறவு. கட்டாயத்தின் பேரிலும், நிபந்தனைகளின் பேரிலும் திணிக்கபடுபவை அல்ல. இறைவனோடு நமக்குள்ள உறவும் இப்படிப்பட்டதே... நீங்கள் சிந்தித்ததுண்டா? அவர் நம்மை அன்பு செய்கிறார், தேர்ந்துகொண்டுள்ளார்... அதற்கு பதிலளிப்பதோ அதற்கேற்றாற்போல் வாழ்வதோ நமது முடிவாகும்.

நீங்கள் என்னை தேர்ந்துகொள்ளவில்லை நான் தான் உங்களை தேர்ந்துகொண்டேன், என்று திட்டவட்டமாய் அறிவிக்கின்றார் கிறிஸ்து. இன்றைய முதல் வாசகத்தில் அதற்கான அழகான உதாரணமும் நம் முன் நிற்கின்றது. பதினொருவரோடு ஒருவரை சேர்க்க எண்ணியபோது, யாரை சேர்க்க வேண்டும் என இறைவனிடமே கேட்டு முடிவெடுக்கின்றார்கள். இறைவன் நம்மை  தேர்ந்துகொள்ளும்போது பெரும் திரளாய், வெறும் கூட்டமாய் தேர்ந்துகொள்வதில்லை... மாறாக... நம்மை பெயர்சொல்லி அழைக்கிறார், நம்மை முழுமையாய் அறிந்து தேர்ந்துகொள்கிறார். நிறைகுறைகள் நம்மை அவருக்குரியவர்களாய் மாற்றுவதில்லை, அவர் என்னை தேர்ந்துகொண்டிருக்கிறார் என்ற தெளிவே நம்மை அவருக்குரியவராய் மாற்றுகிறது.

தேர்ந்துகொள்ளப்படுவது என்பது பெருமையல்ல, அது ஒரு சவால், ஒரு பணி, ஒரு கடமை, ஒரு அழைப்பு. தேர்ந்துக்கொள்ளப்பட்ட மக்கள் என்ற நிலையில் இருந்த இஸ்ராயேல் மக்கள் தாங்கள் ஏற்றுக்கொண்ட சவாலுக்கும், பணிக்கும், தியாகங்களுக்கும், கீழ்படிதலுக்கும் ஏற்றவர்களாக வாழ முன்வரவில்லை - இன்று கிறிஸ்துவை ஏற்றுக்கொண்டிருக்கும் நாம் ஒவ்வொருவரும், உண்மையிலேயே தேர்ந்துகொள்ளப்பட்டவர்களாய் வாழ்வது என்பது நமது அழைப்பு, கடமை, தியாகம், சவால் என்பதை உணர்ந்திருக்கிறோமா? 

நானே உன்னை தேர்ந்துகொண்டேன் என்று நம்மை பார்த்து கூறும் இறைவனின் அழைப்பை உளமார ஏற்க நாம் தயாரா? 

I CHOSE YOU

The Feast of St. Mathias the Apostle

14th May, 2018: Acts 1: 15-17, 20-26; Jn 15: 16

Every relationship is a response! Relationships can never be forced upon persons. I wish to relate to a person, I choose to relate to the person and then I leave the response of the person, to the freedom of that person! Only then there is a healthy relationship that blooms. It is the same with God's choice too!

You have not chosen me, I chose you!, reminds Jesus today. With the beautiful example of Mathias and Barsabbas, the Word brings out another element of the election theology! When God chooses, God chooses individuals (not masses), for a unique purpose and specific plan. As God reminds us through Jeremiah, God has a plan for each of us (Jer 29:11) and God alone knows what the plan is and how it would come through. All that we need to do is submit, surrender to that plan and walk by it.

And when God chooses, God chooses not for merely privilege, position and power; but for commitment, suffering and giving one's life! At times today, as the readings of these weeks around the birth of the New People of God reminds us, we cannot stop with thinking we are chosen therefore we are special! We are chosen, we are special but it does not stop with that; we are specially chosen to strive, fight, struggle, suffer and thus, usher in the Reign of God. 

Mathias is counted in the band of apostles. Of course a privilege, but with that came the burden of the Messenger of the Word, the burden of the Elder of the Community and the burden of a Shepherd. 

The Word tells us today: You are chosen! Are you ready for all that it entails? 

May 13... a day with a lot to celebrate!

Added to the Ascension of the Lord that we celebrate today this year, we have quite a few other things to remember to thank God for...

As the world raves over celebrating today what they really do not even understand (the so-called Mothers' day), we Catholics really do have a mother to celebrate today! Our Blessed Mother of Fatima...a great revelation by the Mother of God, 101 years ago. inspired by the love that she has for her Son and for the children she has begotten because of her Son! The Fatima phenomenon has been a great mysterious show of God's love in the past century and it continues to be so! May our blessed mother continue to guide and encourage us.

Yet another event that we cannot miss today is something that happened this day 37 years ago: the Assasination Attempt on Pope Saint John Paul II. Ali Agca, who shot at the Saintly Pontiff was chosen specially to accomplish that task and naturally he was a sharp shooter. But when he missed accomplishing the task, he was intrigued and when Pope John Paul II went to meet him in the prison after his surgery and recuperation, the first question Agca asked was, how come I missed that aim! And the smiling Pope seemed to have retorted: You might have chosen the right gun and the right spot but you chose the wrong day! 

There is yet another remembrance today (though liturgically this year it has to be celebrated tomorrow, that too only by the Salesian Sisters of Don Bosco): the Feast of St. Mary Mazzarello, a saintly young girl who turned into a mature and seasoned leader by her mere dedication to grow in this love of the Lord. Everything you do, do it for the love of God, she would say! Her yearning for sanctity, the right persons she met in her life (Fr. Pestarino and Don Bosco), and the extraordinary love that she had for the Lord took her all the way to her sanctity.

The Fad of the Mothers' Day!

Mothers' Day - for whom? for what? why today?

The Second Sunday of May is by now celebrated by all online savvies and those pressurised by them as Mothers' Day! Going to see why, how many really know the facts? The facts that it was started as a campaign by one individual in 1905 and by 1908 celebrated locally and in 1914 made a national holiday... all in the United States of America. The one who was campaigning for it was Anna Jarvis and 1905 was the year that her mother passed away and the one who made it national was Woodrow Wilson! It is another curios fact that already in 1920, the same Anna Jarvis who campaigned for the Mothers' Day, called for a boycott on it, because she felt it had been commercialised (already then!).

I understand if I celebrated my mother on her birthday...that is my mother's day! I understand it if it has to be a common celebration... we celebrate our mothers on a day when we celebrate our common mother - may be Mother Mary for the Christians, a significant Mother for those who share the same social experience, a person who made a difference as a mother to a common experience that we have had... what has this second sunday got to do with your mother and mine?

It is not throwing wet blanket on the human craving for festivities, but a simple call to be conscious of what we wish to believe, what we are convinced of, what we hold important and why we do it all. Mothers' day cannot just become a fad... because the first love that teaches a person what love is, is the mother's love!

THE SOLEMNITY OF ASCENSION

The Lord Goes.. To be.. To be with us forever!
13th May, 2018: 7th Sunday of Easter 
Acts 1:1-11; Eph 4: 1-13; Mk 16:15-20

Ascension. The Lord goes up, the Lord goes up to his Father, to the One who sent him, to the one who had given him a mission to accomplish! The Lord goes up, but has he accomplished?

The Lord goes up, with the PROMISE OF THE FATHER: I am going, but you remain! 

I am going says the Lord; but assures that he will not abandon us totally. The Lord will give us an helper who would fill us with the same passion and fire that was in the Son of God. The promise is so concrete and sure, that the next step depends on that. They would be told to do what they have to do. And then it happens...the promise of the Father, crying out to the apostles, to us: you are my beloved sons and daughters, today I have begotten you in my Son! It is the promise of the Father as we read in the Book of Joel (chapter 2) that the Father will fill us with the Spirit!

The Lord goes up, with a PARTING MESSAGE: I am going, You too go!

Go and be my witnesses! Go proclaim my message! Go continue my task! It is like the famous relay race! The Lord has done his rounds, and now the baton is in our hands. It depends on us to take it forward, says the Lord, as he gives his parting message to the Apostles. Go all over the world; Go to all people; Go to take my message!

The Lord goes up, into a PRESENCE BEYOND: I am going, but I am with your forever. 

This going of the Lord is not a going in the literal sense of the word, because if the Lord were to be gone, we would not exist. The Lord goes, to be with us ever more powerfully, ever more closely and ever more unceasingly. As the Lord promises, the Lord have overcome the World (Jn 16: 33). The Lord goes, precisely that he could be with us always and everywhere, till the end of times, as a conqueror, as the power that enlivens us, as a person who has gone before us showing us the way.

The Lord Goes... to be with us...forever, always and everywhere!

மே 12: யாருக்காக?

தந்தையிடமிருந்து, தந்தையாம் அவருக்காகவே!

12th May,  2018: Acts 18: 23-28; Jn 16: 23-28

அப்பொல்லோ, பிரிஸ்கில்லா, அக்கில்லா, பவுல் என அப்போஸ்தலர்கள் அணிவகுத்து நிற்கின்றார்கள் இன்றைய முதல் வாசகத்தில். இவர்கள் அனைவருமே இறைவனின் வார்த்தையையும், கிறிஸ்துவின் வாழ்க்கையையும் அனைத்து மக்களுக்கும் எடுத்துச்செல்ல வேண்டுமென  தங்களையே அற்பணித்து வாழ்ந்து வந்தவர்கள். அவர்களது வாழ்க்கைமுறையிலிருந்து நமக்கு ஒரு உந்துதல் தரப்படுகிறது. நானா நீயா யார் பெரியவர் என்றோ, சேவை புரிவதா பெறுவதா என்றோ, யார் யாருக்கு கற்று தவறுவது என்றோ எந்த 'தன்மையப்படுத்தும்' எண்ணங்கள் எதுவுமின்றி செயல்பட அவர்களால் எப்படி முடிந்தது?

இயேசுவும் நற்செய்தியில் தன்னையும் தன்  தந்தையையும் பற்றி நமக்கு கூறும் போது... அவர்களுக்கு இடையே உள்ள ஒற்றுமையையும் ஒருமைப்பாட்டையும் கோடிட்டு காட்டுகிறார். தந்தையிடமிருந்தே வந்தேன்,   தந்தையிடமே திரும்புகிறேன் என்று தன் வாழ்க்கையை  சுருங்கவிளக்கும் அவரது பாணியே அவரது சீடர்களிடமும் காணப்படுகிறது. 

இதையல்லவா பவுல் உண்டாலும் பருகினால் நாம் அவருக்காகவே செய்கிறோம் (1 கொரி 10:31) என்றும், நாம் வாழ்ந்தாலும் இறந்தாலும் அது அவருக்காகவே (உரோமை 14:8) என்றும் தெள்ளத்தெளிவாக எடுத்துக்கூறுகிறார்? இன்று கிறிஸ்தவ குடும்பங்களிலும், துறவற வாழ்விலும், மற்ற குழுக்களிலும், கிறிஸ்தவ சமூகத்திலும் பல பிரச்சனைகளின் அடிப்படை காரணத்தை ஆய்ந்தறிய முற்பட்டோமென்றால், நமக்கு விளங்குவது இந்த உண்மையாய் தான் இருக்கும்: நாம் யாருக்காக,  யாரால், எதற்காக, எதை நோக்கி வாழ்ந்துகொண்டிருக்கிறோம் என்ற தெளிவு நம்மிடம் இல்லாமல் போய்விடுகின்றது. 

நாம் தந்தையிடமிருந்தே  வந்தோம்,அவருக்காகவே வாழ்கிறோம், அவரை நோக்கியே பயணிக்கிறோம் என்று தெளிந்துவிட்டோமென்றால், தேவையற்ற தேடல்களும், மோதல்களும் அகன்றுவிடும்.

Saturday, 6th week in Eastertide

12th May,  2018: Acts 18: 23-28; Jn 16: 23-28

Apollos, Priscilla, Acquilla, Paul... there is a band of apostles, all working in the name of the Lord. Among themselves and when in company of others, they did not consider their ego as something inviolable. They were ready to give in, to be corrected and to be taught. We see this lived out beautifully in the first reading today.

Jesus in the Gospel too, offers himself and the Father as an example of living in union of spirit. They think alike, they plan alike and they form a worthy part of the salvific band of God. I have come from the Father and I leave to go to the Father, he declares. 

Just yesterday, I had the opportunity of discussing with another person about the various problems that we find reported about religious life today. We were sharing, if we go to find out the fundamental reason that underlies all problems there, it is simply this: we have forgotten we come from the Lord, we are called by the Lord, we are sent by the Lord, and as St. Paul says, whether we eat or drink we do it for the Lord (1 Cor 10:31); or whether we live or die, we do it for the Lord (Rom 14:8). Whether it is married life or religious life, whether we are young or old, whoever we are and whatever we do... we need to remember that we are sent by the Lord... with life and with a particular call. 

Are we conscious of the fact that we are living a life that is given by the Lord? Are we aware of the fact that all that we are involved in, our work and life, is towards a plan that God has in mind? Have we the readiness and will to be concerned about God's ventures!
