Can we live divided lives?

1 Kgs11: 29-32, 12: 19; Mk 7: 31-37

For the people of Israel there was no difference between their political life and their religious life. For them everything was just one; an integral mode of living as people of God; forever the people of the Covenant: 'I shall be your God and you shall be my people'. But at a certain point, as we read in the first reading today, the misery befalls them - Politics and Religion part their ways. 

Further, something that happens makes things worse: using religion for political ends or politics for religious reasons. It becomes almost an unjust alliance and remains so even to this day! That is history, but can happen in our personal life too: the division between our religious life and our civil life, and worse still if we use one for the manipulation of the other. 

Jesus is totally against this division and considers it always an hypocrisy. One cannot call oneself a shepherd and still remain untouched by the miseries of the people. One cannot call oneself a 'Christ-ian' and live a life that is totally insensitive towards others. One cannot call oneself a child of God and look down on his brother or sister, or much worse ill-treat, exploit or oppress them. If one does that, he or she is giving into idolatry, claiming to belong to Christ but divided within oneself, externally professing Christ but totally against Christ at the level of the inner self. 

Can we really live that divided lives?

பிப்ரவரி 9: நானே உன் கடவுள்!

இறைவனில் வாழும் வாழ்வே நிலை வாழ்வு

வாழ்வும் வீழ்வும், உயர்வும் தாழ்வும், எழுச்சியும் வீழ்ச்சியும் உண்மையில் எதில் அடங்கியுள்ளது என்பதை சிந்திக்க அழைக்கிறது இன்றைய இறைவார்த்தை. இரண்டு அரசுகளை குறித்து நாம் படிக்கின்றோம்... வீழ்கின்ற ஒன்றும் எழுகின்ற ஒன்றும்! தாவீதுக்கு இறைவன் அளித்த அரசின் வீழ்ச்சியும், என்றும் அழியாத இறையரசின் எழுச்சியும் நம் கண் முன்னே வைக்க படுகின்றது. செவிடர் கேட்கின்றனர் ஊமையர் பேசுகின்றனர் என்ற அந்த கூற்று, இறையரசின் அறிவிப்பாய் நமக்கு தரப்படுகின்றது... அதற்கான காரணம்? இறைவார்த்தை அறிவிக்கப்பட்டது, இறைவார்த்தை ஏற்கப்பட்டது, இறைவார்த்தையின் படி வாழ அவர்கள் முன் வந்தனர் என்பதே. 

நான், என் சாதனைகள், என் வெற்றி, என் திட்டங்கள், எனது வாழ்வு என்று தற்பெருமையிலும், அகந்தையிலும் நான் வாழும் போது நெருங்கி வரும் வீழ்ச்சியை காணாமலேயே நான் என்னையே இழந்து விடுகிறேன். இறைவனின் சித்தப்படி, அவரது வார்த்தையின் படி வாழ்வதை நான் முன் நிறுத்தாது, எனது விருப்பப்படி, எனது ஆசையின்படியெல்லாம் வாழ முனையும் போது எனது வீழ்ச்சிக்கு நானே வழிவகுக்கிறேன் என்று உணர வேண்டும். ஆதாம் ஏவாளின் அனுபவமோ, பாபேல் நகர கோபுரத்தின் அனுபவமோ, சாலமோன், சிம்சோன் என பலரின் அனுபவமோ நமக்கு தரும் எச்சரிக்கை இதுவல்லவோ? எனது தற்பெருமையும் அகந்தையுமே  பாவத்தின் நுழைவாயில்!

இந்த தற்பெருமையாலும், அகந்தையினாலேயும் தான் நான் எனக்கென சில கடவுள்களை உருவாக்கிக்கொள்கிறேன் - நான் என்ற கடவுள், என் பெயரும் புகழும் என்ற கடவுள், என் சாதனைகள் என்ற கடவுள்,எனது சுகவாழ்வு என்ற கடவுள் என்று எத்தனை கடவுள்கள்! 

இன்று இறைவன் நமக்கு தரும் நினைவூட்டல் இதுவே: நானே உன் கடவுள், என் குரலுக்கு செவிமடு! இறைவனின் குரலை கேட்டு, இறைவனில் வாழ்ந்து நிலை வாழ்வுக்கு உரியவர்களாவோம்! 

Pride, Rebellion and Hearing God's Voice

1 Kings 11:4-13; Mark 7:24-30

The readings today speak of two kingdoms...one that was ending and the other which was rising. Prophet Ahijah instructs Jeroboam about the role that he has to play in the fall of David's kingdom. And in the Gospel we see the people who rejoice at the coming of the Kingdom (Reign) of God: "the deaf hear and the mute speak" they exclaim - that phrase was symbolic and indicative of the Reign of God to the people of Israel. 

The message is obvious - it is an invitation to turn away from a tendency of human pride and rebellion and place the absolute dominion always in the hands of God. Right from the beginning (explained by the stories of Adam and Eve, the tower of Babel and so on), the ruin of humankind has been due to human pride; the entry point of sin into humanity has been rebellion. 

It is in that rebellion and pride that we make gods for ourselves - making gods of our own ego, of our successes, of our plans and projects, of our prospects and the social ladders, of our attachments and cravings. At times, only when drastic things happen we realise our folly! 

The Lord reminds us today: I am the Lord you God, hear my voice...let us make it our habit to hear the Lord's voice and live by it everyday.

பிப்ரவரி 8: கடவுளையே வியக்கச் செய்பவர்கள்

முற்றிலும் சரணடையும் மனநிலையில் வளர...

பாவத்தின் அதி பயங்கரமானதொரு குணம் என்ன தெரியுமா... கொஞ்சம் கொஞ்சமாய், நமக்கே தெரியாமல் நம்மை தனக்கே அடிமையாக்கிக்கொள்ளும் ஆற்றலே! உடலில் ஏறிய நஞ்சு நம்மை அறியாமலே வலியேதும் இல்லாமலே உடல் முழுவதும் பரவுவது போல, பாவம் நம்மைக் ஆட்கொள்ளுகிறது. ஏதும் உணராமல் இருந்துவிட்டு, திடீரெனெ விழித்து கொள்ளும் போது ஏற்கனவே காலம் கடந்து போனதொரு உணர்வை எத்தனை முறை நாம் பெற்றிருக்கிறோம்! இன்றைய முதல் வாசகத்தில் சாலமோன் பெரும் அனுபவம் இது தான். கொஞ்சம் கொஞ்சமாய் கடவுளின்  செல்லப்பிள்ளை என்ற தனது அடையாளத்தை இழக்கிறார் சாலமோன்...சுதாரித்துக்கொண்ட போது  ஏற்கனவே காலம் கடந்து இருந்தது.

சுருக்கமாய் கூறினால் பாவம் என்பது முரண்டு பிடிப்பது - கடவுளின் சித்தத்திற்கு எதிர்த்து முரண்டு பிடிப்பது. அப்படியானால், அதற்கு தீர்வு என்ன? கடவுளின் பிள்ளைகளாய் அவரிடம் நம்மையே முழுமையாய் சரணாக்குவது, எந்த தயக்கமோ, மாற்றுச் சிந்தனையோ இல்லாமல் நம்மையே முற்றிலுமாய் தாவீதை போல ( 1 அரசர் 11:6) நம்மையே இறைவனின் கரங்களில் சரணாக்குவதே வழி, வேற்றினப்பெண்ணாய் இருந்தும் தன் தாழ்ச்சியாலும் தன்னளிப்பாலும் இயேசுவையே வியக்க வைத்த அந்த தாயை போல, நம்மையே இறைவனின் சித்தத்திற்கு குழந்தைகளை போல சரணாக்கும் போது நாம் உண்மையில் கடவுளின் வியத்தகு பிள்ளைகளாகிறோம். 

இப்பெண்ணே கடவுளை வியக்க செய்த பல புனிதர்களின் முன்னோடியாகிறாள்... பவுலடிகளார், தொடக்க கால மறைசாட்சிகள், பிற்கால புனிதர்களான ஜான் மரிய வியான்னி, மாக்சிமில்லியன் கோல்பே, ஆஸ்கர் ரோமெரோ, ராணி மரியா, என இந்த பட்டியல் நீண்டு கொண்டே போக்கக்கூடியது. நாம் செய்ய வேண்டியதெல்லாம் ஒன்று தான். நம்மையே முற்றிலும்  சரணாக்கி இறைவனையே வியக்கச் செய்யும் பிள்ளைகளாவோம்! பெரிது உமது நம்பிக்கை என இறைவன் கூறுவதை கேட்டு மகிழ்வோம்!

Saints who surprise God

1 Kgs 11:4-13; Mk 7: 24-30

The most dangerous character of sin is, it takes over little by little that, all too soon we find it to be too late! Solomon who was a sign of God's glory in the early days of his kingship, soon finds himself in a point of no return, because he had given away his heart little by little to ways that took him away from God! 

In simple words sin can be understood as a rebellion against God... a lack of surrender into God's hands. The remedy is: a childlike surrender into the hands of God; following God unreservedly as did David (1Kgs 11:6); a faith that becomes a humble surrender to God's Will, like the Syrophoenician woman that we see in the Gospel. 

She becomes the prototype of the saints who surprised God... who surprised God by their total surrender...like St.Paul, or the early martyrs, or the later saints like John Maria Vianney, or Maxmillian Kolbe, or great models like Blessed Oscar Romero, Blessed Sr. Rani Maria... the list goes on, and the challenge is that we add our names to that. 

Let our surrender to the Lord be so total, that in God's pleasant surprise miracles abound. Can we surprise God by our surrender?... that will be a wonderful sign of growing in holiness.

பிப்ரவரி 5: இறைபிரசன்னத்தை உணர்கிறார்களா?

மக்களை தேடி சென்ற கிறிஸ்து, அவரை தேடி வந்த மக்கள் 

முதல் வாசகத்தில் உடன்படிக்கையின் பெட்டகம் கோவிலை தேடி வருகிறது; நற்செய்தியில் கிறிஸ்து மக்களை தேடி வருகிறார். இவ்விரண்டுக்கும் ஏதேனும் தொடர்பு உண்டா எனின், அதிகம் உண்டு! இறைமக்களே இறைவன் வாழும் முதல் கோவில் என்பதை நாம் உணரவேண்டும் என்பதே அந்த தொடர்பு. நீங்கள் கடவுள் வாழும் கோவில் என்று உங்களுக்கு தெரியாதா என்று பவுல் அடிகளார் கொரிந்தியருக்கு எழுதிய மடலில் நம்மை பார்த்து வினவுகிறார் அல்லவா? (1 கொரி 3:16). சிறப்பாக, தேவையில் உழல்வோர், வருத்தத்தில் இருப்போர், துன்பத்தில் திணறுவோர், துணையின்றி வாடுவோர், வழியின்றி திகைப்போர், இவர்கள் எல்லாம் இறைவன் வாழும் ஆலயங்களே. இவர்களில் இறைவனை காண இயலாதவர்கள் இறைவனை எங்குமே காண இயலாது.

கோவிலின் முக்கியத்துவத்தை கிறிஸ்து குறைத்து கூறவில்லை, ஆனால் அதையும் தாண்டி இறைபிரசன்னத்தை உணர நம்மை அழைக்கிறார்: ஒரு நாள் வரும், இறைவனை ஆவியிலும் உண்மையிலும் வழிபடுவீர், என்று நம்மை அழைக்கிறார். பெரிய கோவில்கள் கட்டுவது சிறப்பே, ஆனால் உண்மையில் இறைமக்களை கட்டி எழுப்புவது அதைவிட முக்கியமானதன்றோ? பெரும் விழாக்கள் கொண்டாடுவது தேவையே ஆனால் அதைவிட மக்களை, மனிதர்களை, நம் சகோதர சகோதரிகளை கொண்டாடுவது முக்கியமானதன்றோ! 

பெரும் விழாக்களில் லட்சலட்சமாய் செலவு செய்தபின்னும் ஒருவரின் வாழ்வை கூட தொட இயலவில்லையென்றால், துன்பப்படும் ஒருவரின் உள்ளத்தை கூட உற்சாகமூட்டவில்லையெனில், ஒருவரின் துன்பப்படும் குடும்பத்தை கூட ஒளிபெற செய்யவில்லையெனில், அந்த விழாவை கொண்டாடி என்ன பயன்? 

எங்கெல்லாம் கிறிஸ்து சென்றாரோ அங்கெல்லாம் மக்கள் சென்றார்கள்... இறைபிரசன்னத்தை உணர்ந்தார்கள்; எங்கெல்லாம் சீடர்கள் சென்றார்களோ அங்கெல்லாம் மக்கள் சென்றார்கள்... இறைபிரசன்னத்தை உணர்ந்தார்கள் ( தி.ப. 5:12-15); நாம் செல்லும் இடமெல்லாம் மற்றவர் வர விரும்புகின்றார்களா? இறைபிரசன்னத்தை உணர்கின்றார்களா? சிந்திப்போமா!!!

Is God's presence felt?

Monday, 5th week in Ordinary Time
1 Kgs 8:1-7,9-13; Mk 6: 53-56

The Ark comes to the Temple and Jesus comes to the people: where does the link lie here? Obviously, it lies in the fact that the people of God are the true temples of God! Do you not know that you are God's temple and that God's Spirit dwells in you? , asks St. Paul (1 Cor 3:16). Specially the needy and the poor, the sick and the suffering, the lonely and the unloved... they are the temples where we can encounter God face to face. 

Jesus does not depreciate the importance of the Temple when he said: a day will come when you will worship the Lord in Spirit and in Truth (Cf. Jn 4:23,24). He invites us to look at a new perspective. Building churches are important but it is more important to build the Church, that is the people of God. Celebrating the feasts and solemnities are important, but it is more important to celebrate persons and ensure humanity, happiness and wholeness to every person. 

What would we have gained if we spent tons of money on a well organised festivity, if we had not touched even one needy person, or made happy one grieving heart, or given joy to one drooping spirit? Wherever Jesus went, people went and God's presence was felt; wherever the apostles went, people went and God's presence was felt (compare with Acts 5:12-15); wherever we Christ-ians go, God's presence should be felt... Is it really felt?

LIVE LIFE CHRIST-LIKE

The 3P Recipe: Proclaim, Practice and be Prepared!

5th Sunday in Ordinary Time: 4th February, 2018
Job 7:1-4,6,7; 1 Cor 9: 16-19, 22,23; Mk 1: 29-39

Remember those words of Mahatma Gandhi - "I like your Christ; but I dont like your Christians. Because your Christians are so unlike your Christ". That man had the clue to what it means to be Christians - it is to be Christ like!

To Live Life Christ-like...that is the call that the Word gives us today. To live for the Gospel, to live for the Reign, to live for the People of God and to love everyone with your heart and soul: that is the life task given to you and me, to everyone called in the name of Christ.

Proclaim to the world that God is love! Live that love and spread it around, a true and genuine love that does not possess but a love that brings the whole world together. A love that reaches out, heals, frees, unites, enhances, enriches and rends every one whole. We hear a lot of voices today, that claim to be "christian" but speak of things other than love: they speak of condemnation, they speak of vengeance, they speak of violence, they speak of closing in, they speak of rejection of people...are they truly Christian? Proclaim..proclaim love, proclaim peace, proclaim wholeness - only that is Christ like!

When you proclaim that, you will have trouble. Because there are forces that stand for a heartless egoism, a selfish development, an inhuman exploitation and an unbridled avarice! Now you will become the odd one out, when you speak of love and live for it. But still you will do it: because that is what you are called for: to live life Christ-like!

The need is to answer three questions-

First of all, to which band do I belong: Am I truly an apostle of love? Only I can answer the question regarding the deepest motivations of my soul. I may be so by name, I may even appear so - but whether I am or not in reality: only I know, apart from the Lord who knows everything!

Secondly: If I proclaim the message of the Reign, the Gospel of love, does my style of life coincide with the proclamation. In simple words, do I walk the talk? Is there that moral integrity within me because of which I can command the evil forces with authority and they will go silenced before me! The authority that Jesus had before the demons and all other forces that challenged the wholeness of life.

Thirdly: If I identify myself with Christ and Christ's message, what do I do on a daily basis to justify my identity, stay relevant to my self-claim and be counted in that number? Will my lifestyle speak before my words ever leave my tongue? Will the values I stand for, make me stand before the Lord or cringe at His sight? Have I felt the burden of the Reign within my heart, an urgency that unsettles my heart, a passion that sets me afire?

May be today, these questions will orient us to respond to the call that the Word gives us: to live life Christ-like!

பிப்ரவரி 3: புரிந்துணர்தல் - இதுவும் புனிதமே!

அடுத்தவரின் உணர்வை புரிந்து அதையே நானும் உணர்வது...

செல்வ செழிப்போ, நீண்ட ஆயுளோ கேட்காமல் மக்களை புரிந்து உணரவும், சரியான நீதியளிக்கவும் தேவையான ஞானத்தை கேட்கிறார் சாலமோன். தன் சீடர்கள் ஊரெல்லாம் சென்று திரும்பி வந்த போது அவர்கள் எவ்வளவு அயர்வாக இருப்பார்கள் என்பதை உணர்ந்து ஓய்வெடுக்க சொல்லுகிறார் கிறிஸ்து. மக்களை பார்த்தவுடனே அவர்களது தேவையை உணர்ந்து விடுகிறார் கிறிஸ்து. சாலமோன் கேட்ட ஞானத்தின் உச்ச நிலை இது! பரிவு கொள்வது என்று இறைவார்த்தையில் சொல்லப்பட்டாலும்,  இதை தான் புரிந்துணர்தல் என்று கூறுகிறோம். அடுத்தவரின் உணர்வை முழுமையாக புரிந்து கொண்டு அதை உள்வாங்கி, அதையே தானும் உணர்ந்து அதற்கு பதிலளிப்பது என்பதே புரிந்துணர்தலாகும். 

என்னோடு இருப்பவர்கள் என்னை சுற்றி இருப்பவர்கள் என்னை சார்ந்து இருப்பவர்கள் எனக்கு தெரிந்தவர்கள் என யாரானாலும் அவர்கள் என்ன உணர்வோடு இருக்கிறார்கள் என்பதை புரிந்து கொண்டு, அவர்களது உள்ளத்தில் இருக்கும் சோகத்தையோ,  மகிழ்ச்சியையோ, குழப்பத்தையோ, துன்பத்தையோ, தனிமையையோ, கோபத்தையோ, உற்சாகமின்மையையோ, உணர்ந்து உள்வாங்கி புரிந்து அவர்களின் தேவைக்கு ஏற்றாற்போல உடனிருக்கும் பண்பையே புரிந்துணர்தல் என்கிறோம். 

யாருக்கு என்ன நடந்தால் எனக்கென்ன? என் வாழ்வுண்டு, நானுண்டு என்று நான் வாழ்ந்தால், நான் கிறிஸ்துவின் சீடனாக சீடத்தியாக வாழமுடியுமா? அழுவாரோடு அழவும், மகிழ்வாரோடு மகிழவும் இறைவன் என்னை அழைக்கின்றார். அதற்காக அழிவாரோடு அழியவும் தவறிழைப்பரோடு தவறிழைக்கவும் நாம் அழைக்கபடவில்லை. நமது புரிந்துணர்வு இறைஞானமுள்ளதாய் மாறுவது எப்போதென்றால், மற்றவரின் உணர்வை புரிந்து கொண்டு, அவர்கள் இறைவனின் சித்தப்படி மேன்மையடைய அடுத்து செய்யவேண்டியதற்கு அவர்களை நாம் அழைக்கும்போதே! இதுவும் ஒருவகை புனிதமே.

ஆம். புரிந்துணர்தலும் ஒரு வகை புனிதமே. அடுத்தவரை புரிந்துகொள்வதும், அவர்கள் உணர்வதை உணர்வதும், அவர்களுக்கு நன்மை தரக்கூடியதை  உணர்த்துவதும் இறைவனின் கொடையே! இதுவும் புனிதமே!

Compassion - the quality closest to Sanctity

1 Kgs 3: 4-13; Mk 6: 30-34

"An understanding heart to guide God's people", is what Solomon asks of the Lord... and that is what he was given! We see Jesus, who understood the tiredness of his apostles and counselled them to relax. We see Jesus looking at the people and understanding their need, their thirst, their yearning for life...he was filled with compassion! 

Compassion, which comes from com-pati (latin),  to have the same feeling as someone, is basically an understanding of the other! When someone next to me is undergoing a crisis, when someone in my vicinity is going through a suffering, when persons in front of my eyes are experiencing a situation that stifles their lives... can I really feel with them, can I really suffer with them? That would be compassion! That is the sensibility that Jesus exhibits, that is the sensibility that Christ requires of us, if we have to call ourselves Christians! 

A compassionate person alone can be a person of God. When I feel depressed, when I feel oppressed, when I feel spent, when I feel exploited, when I feel angry, when I feel disappointed, only a person with compassion can feel exactly what I feel. The person becomes a person of God, when the person feels what I feel and take me to where God wants me to move on. Yes, compassion is crying with those who cry and laughing with those who laugh, but it is not drowning with those who drown and decaying with those who decay! Compassion has to be a Godly presence of suggesting the right thing at the right time!

Compassion is the quality closest to sanctity! To be Christ-ians, we cannot but be compassionate; like Solomon, let us ask the Lord, and the Lord will grant us a heart that is wise and understanding, loving and compassionate.
