ஏப்ரல் 13: நிலைபெறும் நம்பிக்கை

தப்பித்தல்...நழுவுதல்...தழுவுதல்...நிலைபெறுதல்!

வாழ்வில் சோதனைகளை சநதிக்காதோர் யாரும் இலர்! அதை சந்திக்கும் விதத்திலே தான் மக்கள் வேறுபடுகின்றனர்! கிறிஸ்தவராய் அடையாளம் காணப்பட வேண்டுமென்றால், நாம் சோதனைகளை சந்திக்கும் விதம் எப்படி இருக்கவேண்டுமென இன்றைய இறைவார்த்தை நமக்கு எடுத்து கூறுகின்றது... திருத்தூதர் பணியில் முதற்கிறிஸ்தவர்களும் நற்செய்தியில் கிறிஸ்துவும் இதை நமக்கு கற்றுக்கொடுக்கின்றனர்... 

அத்தனை பெரிய கூட்டம் இருக்கிறது என்று கிறிஸ்து அந்த பிரச்சனையிலிருந்து தப்பித்துவிடவில்லை. எங்களுக்கும் இதற்கும் எந்த சம்மந்தமும் இல்லை என்று சீடர்களும் நழுவிவிடவில்லை! அதுபோலவே, எதிர்த்து நின்ற யூதர்களும் உரோமையர்களும் எத்தனை ஆற்றல் மிக்கவர்களாக இருந்தாலும் பயத்தினால் அவர்கள் சொல்வதை முதற்கிறிஸ்தவர்கள் தழுவிக்கொள்ளவும் இல்லை.

நம் வாழ்வில் சில நேரங்களில் சோதனைகள் வரும்போது எப்படி தப்பிக்கலாம் என்றே முதலில் நாம் சிந்தித்தோம் என்றால் நாம் உண்மையிலே கிறிஸ்துவின் மனநிலையை கொண்டவர்களா? 

சோதனைகள் வரும்போது யார் மீது பழி சுமத்தலாம், நமது பொறுப்பையும், கடமையையும் நமது தோள்களிலிருந்து உதறித்தள்ளி எப்படி நழுவலாம் என்பதே நமது சிந்தனையானால், நாம் கிறிஸ்துவின் சீடர்களா?

நமக்கேன் தொல்லை, சற்று குழைந்து தான் போவோமே என்று எதிர்த்துவரும் ஆற்றல்களை வேறு வழியின்றி தழுவ தயாராகிவிடும்போது நாம் உண்மையிலேயே அவரது வழித்தோன்றல்களா?

எத்தனை சோதனைகள் வந்தாலும் உண்மையிலும் நன்மையிலும் நிலைபெறும் போது... இன்று இல்லையென்றாலும் ஒருநாள் உண்மையும் நீதியும் அன்பும் முளைத்தெழும் என்ற மன உறுதியில் நிலைபெறும் போது... எதை இழந்தாலும், என் உயிரையும் இழந்தாலும், என் உயிர்த்த கிறிஸ்துவோடு இருக்கும் போது எனக்கு இழப்பேது என்ற நம்பிக்கையில் நிலைபெறும் போது ... நான் அவராகிறேன்! அவரது சீடராகிறேன்! அவரது வழித்தோன்றலாகிறேன்! 

நிலைபெறும் நம்பிக்கையில் வளர முடிவெடுப்போம்!

Escape, Shrink, Compromise or ENDURE?

Friday, 2nd week in Eastertide

13th April, 2018: Acts 5: 34-42; Jn 6: 1-15

One term that unites the two readings today is the term "test". Jesus himself is tested with such a big number to feed. He tests his disciples throwing a challenge on them. And in the first reading we have Gamaliel setting up a test for the believers: a test of time! All of these are tests that bring out the quality of Endurance.

If Jesus were to have taken an escapist mode of reaction to the situation,  or the disciples the shirking mode,  or the first believers a comfort seeking compromise mode... we would have nothing of what we believe and belong to today.

May we be have these modes in our way of responding to trying times in our life: 
- Are we on a Escape Mode: trying to run away from the situation, take the shortest exit possible, easy decisions to quit?
- Are we on a Shrink Mode: closing our eyes and refusing to see the problem, recklessly trying to find someone on whom we can blame the entire thing wash our hands off it?
- Are we on a Compromise Mode: saying anything is fine and nothing is wrong, each one has the liberty to do what he or she wants, provided we do not disturb each other?

None of these is expected of a true disciple of Christ! The only mode that is becoming of a Christ-ian is the Endurance Mode.

Endurance is the time tested virtue that enables us to stand the test of time. The Martyrs of old,  great saints in history,  the holy ones of our times,  all of them stand proofs to one fact: Endurance helps faith mature and endurance is a mark of a mature faith!

Obedience - In Spirit, truth and freedom

Thursday, 2nd week in Eastertide

12th April, 2018: Acts 5:27-33;Jn 3: 31-36

We must obey God rather than men; we must obey God's directions rather than men's directives; we must obey the promptings of the Spirit rather than the rulings of men! What a clarity on the part of the disciples. If only we had today that same clarity! 

Do not conform to the standards of the world; rather renewed in Spirit conform to the mind of Christ, instructed St. Paul well in this line (cf. Rom 12:2). At times we justify conformity and compromise on the grounds of peace in the house; other times we create division and sport rebellion under the pretext of being unique and convinced, while it could just be a way of promoting one's own convenience! Our own innermost self is our judge, and ofcourse the one who resides there: the Spirit of the Lord! 

Obedience is not merely conformity to the rule; nor its opposite mere negligence of the rule. It is all about being sincere to the innermost promptings of the Spirit. Being understood when one follows that promptings, is not always guaranteed. Being misunderstood cannot prevent me from being sincere to those promptings. One who obeys will see life (cf. Jn 3:36), because in fact, obedience is seeking Truth and Truth alone shall set us free!

ஏப்ரல் 11: தெளிவு மட்டுமல்ல துணிவும் கூட!

உயிர்ப்பின் ஒளி தரும் புதுவாழ்வு!

சிறை, விலங்கு, தண்டனை, கசையடி, மிரட்டல்கள்... இவை எவற்றுக்கும் அஞ்சாத அப்போஸ்த்தலர்களை இந்த நாட்களில் இறைவார்த்தை நமக்கு அறிமுகப்படுத்தி வருகின்றது. இன்றும் பேதுருவும் ஒரு சில அப்போஸ்தலர்களும் சிறையிலிருந்து அதிசயமாக வெளிவருகிறார்கள்... மீண்டும் பிடிபடுவதற்கே. எனினும் எதற்கும் துணித்தவர்களாய் ஓடி ஒளியாமல் இறைவனின் வார்த்தைக்கு மட்டுமே கட்டுப்பட இசைகிறார்கள். வார்த்தையை அறிவிக்கும் அந்த கடமைக்காக, எதையும் இழக்க அவர்கள் தயாராகும் துணிவு அவர்களுக்கு எங்கிருந்து வந்தது? இதே அப்போஸ்தலர்கள் தானே கிறிஸ்துவை மறுதலித்தார்கள், விட்டு ஓடினார்கள், அவரது வாழ்வு முடிந்துபோன கதை என்று கருதினார்கள்? ஆனால் இப்போதோ...

ஆம் மாற்றத்தின் காரணம் - உயிர்த்த கிறிஸ்துவின் ஒளி! உயிர்ப்பின் ஒளி அவர்களுக்கு தெளிவு தந்தது, புது புரிதல் தந்தது, புது வாழ்வு தந்தது, புத்துயிர் தந்தது. உண்மையை கண்டுவிட்டவர்கள் பெறும் ஒளி அது...எதையும் இழக்க தயாராகும் துணிவை தரக்கூடிய ஒளி. 

சாலக்குடியின் டிவைன் தியான மையத்தின் சகோதரர் மாரியோ அவர்களை பற்றி உறுதியாக கேள்விப்பட்டிருப்பீர்கள்... எனக்கு தெரிந்த ஒரு இளைஞன் தனது 25வது வயதிலே கிறிஸ்துவை அறிந்துகொண்டான், நல்ல வருமானம் தந்த தனது பொறியியல் பணியையும் தூக்கியெறிந்துவிட்டு, தன்னை முழுவதுமாக தள்ளி வைத்த தனது குடும்பத்தை சார்ந்தவர்களையும் விட்டுவிட்டு, யாரும் அறியாத ஓரிடத்தில் சென்று குருவானவராக வேண்டும் என தற்போது பயின்றுகொண்டிருக்கிறான்... இந்தியாவிலும், வேறு பிற இடங்களிலும் கிறிஸ்துவில் தங்களது நம்பிக்கைக்காக பல துன்பங்களை சந்தித்துவரும் சகோதர சகோதரிகளை நாம் அறிவோம்... இன்று திருத்தூதர் பணியில் நாம் கேட்கும் சூழலை இவர்கள் வாழ்ந்துகொண்டிருக்கிறார்கள். 

உண்மையை நான் கண்டுகொண்டேன் என்றால், அதை ஏற்றுக்கொள்ள துணித்துவிட்டேன் என்றால், அதையே என் வாழ்வின் அடித்தளமாய் கொண்டுவாழ நினைத்தேன் என்றால், என்னை யாராலும் தடுக்க முடியாது... ஆனால் அந்த உண்மையை நான் காண, புரிந்துக்கொள்ள, ஒரே வழி தான் உண்டு: உயிர்ப்பின் ஒளியை எனக்குள் நான் கொண்டிருக்க வேண்டும். உயிர்ப்பின் ஒளி தெளிவு மட்டுமல்ல, துணிவும் தரும்!

Wednesday, 2nd week of Eastertide

April 10, 2018: Acts 5: 17-26; Jn 3:16-21

From the prison to freedom,  from the chains to an unfettered spirit,  from fear to total commitment... the Spirit of the Risen Lord strengthens one to walk towards the light! At times truth hurts and at times it costs much,  but if we are in the Spirit, we would count nothing too demanding.

I have always been fascinated by persons like Bro. Mario (those who are familiar with Divine Retreat Centre in Chalakudi, Kerala, would know him well), who have risked their lives for the sake of Christ. Through their lives they have become living illustrations of the episode from Acts that we read today. Another youngster in my life who has inspired me is one known to me, from Tamilnadu, who chose to be a Christian and chose to become a priest, discarding his lustrous engineering post in a firm and disappeared from his family to join a religious congregation, because they were mad at him in the family! Right now there are very many brothers and sisters in places like India, Pakistan, the Emirates and other Middle East nations, who do not consider the sufferings caused in anyway leaving them distraught about following the Lord!

If I have the courage to see the Truth,  accept it and live for it,  nothing can stop me, not even death;  because I have within me eternal life... the Light that sets me, not only on the right path, but even ablaze!

ஏப்ரல் 10: மேலிருந்து...

நம் வாழ்வை புரிந்துகொள்ள ஒரு கண்ணோட்டம்!

நம் வாழ்வு, அதன் பொருள், நமது தேர்வுகள், நமது தெளிவுகள், நமது அழைப்பு, உண்மையான நமது கடமை... இப்படிஎல்லாம் சிந்தித்ததுண்டா? சிந்தித்து பாருங்கள். நானும் வாழ்ந்தேன் இருந்தேன் என்று இருப்பதற்காகவா இறைவன் நம் ஒவ்வொருவரையும் தனித்தன்மையோடு தனித்திறன்களோடு, இத்தனை பொருளோடு படைத்துள்ளார்? சரி தனித்தன்மைகள் திறமைகள் என நான் எனக்காக மட்டுமே வாழ்ந்து மரிக்கவா இத்தனை அழகான அர்த்தமுள்ள உறவுகளை கொடுத்துள்ளார்? துன்பங்கள் தொல்லைகள் என்று இருந்தாலும் வாழ்வில் ஒரு பொருளும், ஆழமும் இருக்கத்தானே செய்கிறது! அப்படியானால் இதை எப்படி புரிந்துக்கொள்வது...

அதற்க்கு தான் இன்றைய வார்த்தை மிக அழகானதொரு பதில் தருகின்றது. அந்த முதற்கிறிஸ்தவர்களை பாருங்கள்... ஒரே மனமும் ஒரே உள்ளமும் கொண்டவர்களாய் வாழ்ந்தார்கள் என்கிறது இறைவார்த்தை... உறவே நம் வாழ்வுக்கு உண்மை பொருளை தரக்கூடியது! உறவுகளே நம் வாழ்வை கிறிஸ்தவ வாழ்வாய் மாற்றக்கூடியது...

இதை நான் குறும்போதே... இந்த உறவுகளில் உள்ள சிக்கல்கள், பிரச்சனைகள், உரசல்கள் இவை யாவும் நமது மனக்கண்முன் வர நேரிடும்... இந்த உறவுகள் அல்லவா வாழ்க்கையை கடினமாக்கிவிடுகின்றன என்று நம்மக்கு தோன்றும். ஆனால்...இதை தான் கிறிஸ்து நமக்கு விளக்குகிறார்...இந்த உறவுகள், நம் வாழ்வு, நம் எண்ணங்கள், நமது கனவுகள்... இவை எல்லாமே எப்போது பொருள் பெரும் எனின், அவற்றை நாம் மேலிருந்து கண்டு பொருள் கொள்ளும்போது மட்டுமே!

மேலிருந்து கண்டு பொருள்கொள்ளுதல் என்பதே கிறிஸ்துவின் கண்ணோட்டம்... அதாவது இறைவன் நம்மிடம் என்ன எதிர்பார்க்கிறார் என்று உணர்ந்து வாழ்வது. நம் வாழ்வை மேலிருந்து புரிந்துகொண்டோமென்றால், நம் உறவுகளை மேலிருந்து புரிந்து கொண்டோமென்றால், சுயநலம், தற்பெருமை, ஒடுக்குமுறை, சுரண்டல்கள், ஏய்ப்புக்கள், ஏமாற்றுக்கள், அநீதிகள், இவை எதுவும் இருக்காது. அன்பு, பொறுமை, விட்டுக்கொடுத்தல், தியாகம், ஒற்றுமை, இனிமை, மகிழ்ச்சி, பூரிப்பு... இவற்றை கேட்கும் போதே எவ்வளவு அழகாயுள்ளது... இதுவே மேலிருந்து கண்டு பொருள் கொண்டு வாழும் முறை...  முயற்சிப்போமா? இதுவே இறையரசின் தொடக்கமும் கூட... சிந்தியுங்கள்...

April 10, 2018: Acts 4: 32-37; Jn 3: 7B-15

The first Chrsitian Community gives us a challenging example today, a prophetic witness! Just imagine that to be the state of our parish communities, or our basic christian communities...or even the Religious Communities of Consecrated life... can this model be emulated today? It is easy to brush it aside, calling it an outdated model, or an impractical ideal, or a time proven failure! But the challenge remains.

Jesus provides the key to the challenge: live your life as if from above. We have received our life and everything in life as a gift from above. And when it is time for us to report back from where we come, we will go without anything in our hands. When we see things from above then, we would laugh at our folly as does the Lord now from heaven (see Ps 2:4). Just look at your life, even as you live it today, a little from above! You will understand how foolish we can be... with our attachments and avarice, jealousy and treachery, and every other inhumanity for the sake of things that do not matter at all!

The Holy Father has presented us with an exhortation today - exactly in these lines... to look at our life from above, from the point of view of the one who has given us the gift of life. If only we have the capacity to remain close to God in every way, how beautiful our life would be - is that not really the Reign of God!

The key is: live life as from above. Learn to look at life from above!

Gaudete et Exsultate - Rejoice and be Glad!

9th April, 2018: Holy Father Pope Francis' Third Apostolic Exhortation

Gaudete et Exsultate... Rejoice and Be Glad in the call that you have received from the Lord and live that call to the full, the call to belong to God and to live that belongingness to the full - that we call holiness. This in short is the message of the Holy Father in the just released Apostolic Exhortation.

Rejoice! - this call from the Holy Father follows his two preceding Exhortations - the Joy of the Gospel and the Joy of Love. In fact, some expected that the Holy Father would clarify some of the controversies created by certain quarters after his previous Exhortation, Amoris Laetitia. But the Holy Father as a true pastor has stayed clear of all polemics and spoken his heart out to his children, calling their attention to the all important and the original call of human persons: to resemble our Creator, because we are made in God's image and likeness. The Holy Father reminds us that it is not merely a wish of the Lord, but an expressed invitation to holiness - the Lord had been calling humanity right from Abraham to 'walk with God and be blameless'!

The Exhortation reckons itself further attractive because it is not too long - just 177 paragraphs and all of them short and precise. The language is simple and straight forward, making the document clear and understandable to everyone who intends to read it. A detailed elaboration and discussion of the document will surely begin in no time, but here, I intend to share just a clue as to what to look out for, as one may begin to read this reflection from the Holy Father.

1. A Reminder to our Original Call

The Call to Holiness is as old as humanity, says the Word of God. Right in our creation we were created with the potential to be holy, to grow holy and remain holy. The Lord has reminded us time and again. This Exhortation is another reminder from the Chief Shepherd to keep to our original path!

2. Beware of the Distractions

As we pursue this call, we can easily be distracted, either getting fixed to one way of thinking or a certain way of doing things in life. The Exhortation invites us to avoid absolutising anything or relativising anything - the call is to stay attentive to the way you are called to live your holiness. Neither a frenetic activity devoid of God nor a psuedo piety devoid of 'the other', can take us all the way. I was tempted to read those lines in Indian terms - we would do good to resist the temptation to absolutise either gnana marg or karma marg in itself, it would not take us anywhere close to God.

3. Learn from the Master

Jesus' life and teaching while on earth, has been a great model set for us. He was someone who chose to be against the flow - when they thought in terms of law and duty, he spoke of love and its beauty; when they feared breaking commandments, he was giving them new ones! It is not in the amount of things you do or accomplish, not in the number of sacrifices you offer to the Lord that you are saved, but in the measure you are able to unite yourself in heart, mind and soul to the Creator and translate the Creator's Will into your daily life: that is holiness!

4. There are already Signs all over

Holiness, as we often think, is not a far cry! It is all around us. There have been people living before us and with us, who have beheld this spark of the divine within them and our call is to follow suit. As we read these lines we can almost hear the voice of Pope Francis yelling into our ears - come on Christian! Pull up! Stay firm! Get up! and Keep Walking towards that holiness you are called to. Perseverance, patience, meekness, joy, humour, courage, sense of belonging to each other and a personal relationship with the Lord - these are the perfect correctives that the Holy Father proposes to the times now.

5. Keep fighting with a Smile

The Holy Father also observes the need to be vigilant against the tendencies that can make us lose our vision...yes, our vision has to be strengthened by our recourse to discernment - knowing what is happening around, understanding all the implications and choosing with calmness and serenity, things that are difficult but meaningful, tough but just, demanding but life-giving. Let our choice be for God and God's will, we shall be well on our way towards holiness.

Holiness is not merely a crown to be expected at the end of our race, but it is the way we conduct ourselves at every step of it. God bless our Holy Father!

ஏப்ரல் 9: அழைக்கும் இறைவன்

கிறிஸ்து பிறப்பின் அறிவிப்பு பெருவிழா 

இவ்வாண்டு இத்திருவிழா மிக தாமதமாக கொண்டாடப்படுகிறது ... காரணம் நமக்கு தெரிந்ததே. மார்ச் 25 அன்று குருத்தோலை ஞாயிறாகிப்போனதால் நாம் இதை இன்று கொண்டாடுகின்றோம்! 

மரியன்னைக்கு மங்களவார்த்தை சொன்ன தினம் என்று நாம் பொருள் கூறும் இந்நாள் மிக அழகானதொரு செய்தியை நம் ஒவ்வொருவருக்குமே தருகிறது! இன்று நம் கண்முன்னே நிறுத்தப்படும் நிகழ்வில் மூன்று நபர்களை நாம் காணலாம்...

1. கடவுளின் தூதர்: நம்பிக்கை!
நம்பிக்கை என்பது, தம்மையே நமக்கு வெளிப்படுத்தும் இறைவனுக்கு நாம் தரும் பதிலாகும். அவ்வாறு தம்மையே நமக்கு கடவுள் வெளிப்படுத்துகின்றார் என்பதை நமக்கு உணர்த்தும் ஒரு குறியீடு, இறைத்தூதர்! கடவுள் நம்மோடு இருக்கின்றார், தொடர்ந்து நம்மோடு பேசி வருகின்றார், நம்மை அவரது உடனுழைப்பாளர்களாக கருதுகின்றார் என்று நமக்கு உணர்த்தும் நபர் இவர்.

2. கடவுளின் தாய்: எதிர்நோக்கு 
எதிர்நோக்கு என்பது நம் வாழ்வில் கடவுளின் உடனிருப்பு என்றுமே உண்டு, நாம் ஒருபோதும் தனித்து விடப்படுவதில்லை என்பதே. இறைவனின் தாயாக தேர்ந்தெடுக்கப்பட்ட மரியாளை பாருங்கள்...சின்னச்சிறு பெண்... பெண்... அதிலும் சிறுமி... உலகம் சிறியது என எதை கருதுகிறது அதையே தன் மாபெரும் ஆற்றலை வெளிப்படுத்துகிறார் இறைவன். இந்த இளம்பெண்ணின் ஒரு சிறுச் சொல்லிலே மனிதத்தின் மீட்பு ஒளிந்திருந்தது என்பது எத்தனை எதிர்நோக்கு தரக்கூடியதொரு குறியீடு!

3. கடவுளின் மகன்: அன்பு 
அன்பு... நாம் அன்பு செய்ய அழைக்கப்பட்டுள்ளோம் ஏனெனில் கடவுள் நம்மை அன்பு செய்துள்ளார், என்பார் யோவான். கடவுளின் அன்பின் மறுக்கமுடியாததொரு அடையாளம், இன்று முன்னறிவிக்கப்படும் இறைவனின் மகன்! இந்த குழந்தை, மனிதம் முழுவதும் ஏங்கி எதிர்பார்க்கும் இந்த மகனே, உலகத்தின் பால் இறைவன் கொண்ட அன்பின் முழுமையான வெளிப்பாடு!

இந்த மூன்று நபர்களின் சங்கமத்திலே தெளிவாய் வெளிப்படும் இறைவனின் செய்தி இதுவே: அழைக்கும் இறைவன் உன்னை இன்று அழைக்கிறார் - உன் பதில் என்ன? அவரது நம்பிக்கையின் கருவியாய், எதிர்நோக்கின் அடையாளமாய், அன்பின் வெளிப்படை இருக்க உன்னை இன்று அழைக்கிறார் இறைவன் - செவி மடுப்பாயா? 

GOD BEGINS...

The Solemnity of Annunciation: 9th April, 2018

Is 7: 10-14, 8:10; Heb 10: 4-10; Lk 1: 26-36

We celebrate the solemnity of Annunciation much later (it should have been March 25th), because of the fact that the feast coincided with the Palm Sunday this year! The Church insists that we do not lose that occasion, however! 

Thinking of the event we celebrate in this feast, I am reminded of something that even as a  boy, I was always taken up. That subtitle in the prayer of the Angelus: GOD BEGINS! 

God is not merely someone who responds... God begins, God initiates, intervenes at the right time even without an asking. That is why St. John proclaimed, we love God because God first loved us (1 Jn 4:19). The feast of Annunciation is a splendid manifestation of this nature of God, the nature of intervening at the appointed time.

We see three people involved here, in this event - in unison they give humanity a holistic life giving message. 

The Angel: stands for Faith - a concrete sign of God's relationship with us. Angels are God's spokespersons, God's messengers and God's extensions which make present God to us. Our Faith is that God continues to live with us, even amidst all the worldliness that we are surrounded by.

Mary: stands for Hope - a concrete sign of Our relationship with God. Mary shines as a counter witness to the hopeless humanity today. Indifference and Individualism marks the humanity of today and Mary's 'yes' is a revolution that spells hope to the world and to the entire humanity. 

The Child: stands for Love - a concrete sign that God still loves the World. God has not given up on us and God will never do! A love that is ready to give totally of Itself (Rom 8:32). The Child that is promised is a sign of God's everlasting and unconditional love that gives life and light to the otherwise darkness filled world today.

Yes, let us remember, God Begins... and we are to respond, respond as soon as possible and as wholeheartedly as possible!
