Am I with Jesus?

Saturday, 3rd week in Eastertide

21st April, 2018: Acts 9: 31-42; Jn 6: 60-69

Peter is the hero today in the Word...when many were leaving Jesus one by one, there were just the select few who remained with Jesus and Peter was the leader among them. Even later when Jesus was taken to suffer, Peter in spite of his weakness, never wished to leave Jesus. He gives a fabulous reason today: to whom shall we go, you have the Words of eternal life! This is why Peter could do all that we hear him do in the Acts!

Staying with Christ is the criterion to being like Christ. Whatever Christ did Peter did: Jesus said to the crippled, get up, pick up your mat and walk and Peter says the same today to Aeneas; Jesus said Talithacum...that is Rise little child and that is what Peter says today to Tabitha - to rise! Peter did all that Jesus did - it was possible because, Peter decided to Stay with Jesus!

When we stay with Jesus, we naturally become good to others, reach out to others, love others, free others, empower others, encourage others, affirm others, appreciate others, give life to others! Enough to stay with Jesus from the depth of our hearts, all that we do will be life giving..because Jesus said: one who believes in me will do all that I did and more than that.

When we are not with Jesus, we may think we are doing good, we are doing great things... but the sad fact would be we are not life giving, we are not affirming others and we are not empowering others but in all that we do, we are only desperately trying to blow our own ego, gain power for ourselves, become popular for our own sake and try to fend for ourselves!

It is crucial therefore dear friend, to ask ourselves: Am I  with Jesus?

ஏப்ரல் 21: இயேசுவோடே...

அவரோடே வாழ்வோம், அவராகவே வாழ்வோம். 

இன்றைய இறைவார்த்தையில் விஞ்சி நிற்பவர் - பேதுரு! பலரும் இயேசுவை விட்டு விலகி சென்றபோது  ஒரு சிலர் மட்டுமே அவரோடு தங்கினர்... அவர்களில் பேதுருவே தலைவராக நிற்கிறார். கிறிஸ்து கைதாகி துன்புற நேர்ந்தபோதும் கூட, அவரது இயலாமையையும் தாண்டி கிறிஸ்துவோடே இருக்க வேண்டும் என்று துடித்தவர் பேதுரு. அதற்கு இன்று தலையாயதொரு காரணத்தையும் தருகிறார்: யாரிடம் செல்வோம் இறைவா... வாழ்வு தரும் வார்த்தைகள் உம்மிடம் அன்றோ உள்ளன! 

கிறிஸ்துவோடே தங்குதல் என்பது அவரை போல் வாழ்வதற்கான ஒரு அடிப்படை தேவையாகும். அவரை போன்றே அனைத்தையும் செய்தார் பேதுரு... முடமானவரை கண்டு எழுந்து நட என்றதும், தபிதாவை பார்த்து எழுந்திரு என்றதும், கிறிஸ்து செய்த அதே செயல்கள் என்பதை நாம் அறிவோம்...இது அவரால் முடிந்தது ஏனெனில், அவர் இயேசுவோடே வாழ்ந்தார். 

நாமும் இயேசுவோடே வாழும் போது அவரைப்போலவே பிறருக்கு உயிரூட்டுபவர்களாய், ஊக்கமூட்டுபவர்களாய், உடனிருப்பவர்களாய், நன்மை புரிபவர்களாய், கைகொடுப்பவர்களாய், வாழுவோம். நாம் செய்யும் அனைத்தும் அடுத்தவருக்கு வாழ்வளிப்பதாய் மாறும். ஆனால் அவரோடு நாம் இல்லையெனின் நாம் செய்யும் அனைத்தும் நன்மையாகவே இருப்பினும், அது நமது சுயநலத்திற்காகவும், நமது நற்பெயருக்காகவும், நமது பெயர் பரவுவதற்காகவும், நம்மையே நாம் முன்னிறுத்துவதற்காகவும் மட்டுமே பயன்படும்.

நாம் செய்யும் அனைத்திலும், நாம் சிந்திக்கும் அனைத்திலும் நம்மையே நாம் கேட்டுக்கொள்ள வேண்டிய கேள்வி ஒன்று உள்ளது: நான் இயேசுவோடே இருக்கிறேனா?

ஏப்ரல் 20: இறையரசின் சாயல்...

இறைவார்த்தை, இறைப்பணி, இறைச்சமூகம் 

விண்ணிலிருந்து ஒரு குரல் அவரை தொட்டது; இறைவனின் ஊழியர் அவரை குணப்படுத்தினார்; விண்ணிலிருந்து உணவு அவரை வலுப்படுத்தியது. இறையரசின் முழுச்சாயலையும் இங்கு நாம் காண்கின்றோம்!

கிறிஸ்துவின் வாழ்வின் முழு பொருளும் இறையரசை நோக்கியே இருந்தது. இறையரசு மண்ணிலே நிறுவப்பட வேண்டும் என்றே அவர் அல்லும் பகலும் விரும்பினார், இன்னலுற்றார், தன் வாழ்வையே தந்தார். இந்த இறையரசு மண்ணில் வர மூன்று கூறுகள் இணைய வேண்டியுள்ளது...அவற்றையே இன்று நாம் காண்கின்றோம்... 

மேலிருந்து நம் உள்ளங்களில் ஒலிக்கும் இறைவார்த்தை... ஒவ்வொரு நாளும் இதற்கு நாம் செவிமடுக்க அழைக்கப்படுகிறோம். செவிமடுக்கவும், அதன் படி வாழ்வை மாற்றவும்.

உடன் வாழும் இறைச்சமூகத்தில் இறைவனின் இருத்தலை உணர அழைக்கப்படுகிறோம்... நானும் இறைவனும் மட்டும் என்று வாழ்ந்தால் அது உண்மையிலேயே கிறிஸ்து கண்ட கணவாகாது. அடுத்தவரை நாம் தொல்லையாக நினைக்கலாம்... அவ்வாறே அனானியா சவுலை நினைத்தார்...ஆனால் இறைவன் செய்த பெரும் காரியங்கள் நமக்கு தெரியும் அல்லவா? 

அருளடையாளங்கள், வழிபாடுகள், சிறப்பாக நற்கருணையால் ஊட்டம்பெற்றவர்களாய் வாழ அழைக்கப்படுகிறோம். 

இம்மூன்றும் இணையும் போது... அது இறையரசின் சாயலல்லாமல் வேறென்ன?

The Word, the Sacrament and the Community!

Friday, 3rd week in Eastertide

20th April, 2018: Acts 9: 1-20; Jn 6 : 52-59

The Voice from heaven touched him;  the man sent by heaven healed him;  the bread from heaven strengthened him. What an example of the Word,  the Sacrament and the Community of faith working together for God's Reign to be established!

This is the ideal faith experience - that we hear the Lord speaking to us in the Word, calling us to transformation. The Word comes to us everyday, provided we are ready to receive it. If we really allow the Word to touch us, we shall be transformed.

The Community is around to welcome us, love us, accept us, affirm us and be enriched by us. We cannot think of our Christian faith without the community - the Christian faith is not complete when it is just me and my God! I may have any number of reasons to say I feel better by myself - that would only be an excuse! Do you feel those in the community are no help at all - that is how Ananias thought of Saul; but we know what God made of him.

The Sacraments, specially the Sacrament of the Eucharist is the summit of our faith experience - the Lord my Saviour gives me of himself, inviting me to give of myself to my brothers and sisters. How beautiful it would be, if I live my Christian faith to the full - with the Word,the Sacrament and the Community all in place! That is the beginning of the Reign of God.

Thursday, 3rd week in Eastertide

19th April, 2018: Acts 8: 26-40; Jn 6: 44-51

A couple of days ago, on a Facebook community, a person had posted a message: Give me one good reason why I should leave my denomination to join the Catholic Church? There were many who were giving him reasons, so valid and so edifying. But when I saw it I felt like, and I did post the following lines:

"Many can give you umpteen reasons to join the Catholic Church, but none of them can suffice, for you arrive there if you feel you are called! Yes, you need to feel the call of the Father, the call of the Saviour, the prompting of the Spirit to arrive there! If you have it in you, join!"

Jesus declares today, it is the Lord who draws one to himself. And the Lord draws those who are drawn to the Lord in their choices,  in their priorities,  in their daily decisions. It is of course the Lord who initiates but it is upto us to readily and promptly acknowledge these initiatives and respond to them from the depths of our beings. The one who begins the good work in us will surely bring it to its completion (cf. Phil 1:6) in God's own time.

Phillip is mightily used by God in the first reading today - taken from place to place by the Spirit. It was because he allowed himself to be used;  he submitted to the plans of God. The Court Official is chosen to belong to the Lord because he had a fundamental thirst for the knowledge of the matters of God.

Yes, the Lord is drawing you close to himself...are your ready and willing to let yourself be drawn?

ஏப்ரல் 19: அவரால் ஈர்க்கப்பட

ஈர்க்கப்பட நான் அனுமதிக்கவேண்டும்!

இரண்டு நாட்களுக்கு முன் முகநூல் குழுமம் ஒன்றில் ஒரு நண்பர் ஒரு கேள்வி ஒன்றை பதிவிட்டிருந்தார்... "நான் இப்போதிருக்கும் சபையிலிருந்து கத்தோலிக்க திருச்சபைக்கு மாற எனக்கு ஒரு காரணம் கூறுங்கள்", என்று. பலரும் பல காரணங்களை பதிவிட்டுக்கொண்டிருந்தார்கள். நான் அந்த கேள்வியை பார்த்த போது என் மனதில் தோன்றியது இதுதான். இதை நான் பதிவிட்டும் இருந்தேன்: "பலரும் பல காரணங்களை உங்களுக்கு தரலாம். அத்தனையும் ஒன்று சேர்ந்தாலும் அந்த காரணம் உங்களுக்கு போதாது... ஏனெனில், நீங்கள் அழைக்கப்படாவிடில் இந்த திருச்சபையில் இருக்க இயலாது. நீங்கள் ஈர்க்கப்பட்டாலொழிய, தந்தையாம் இறைவனின் திருவுளத்தால், இறைமகனின் மீட்பினால், தூய ஆவியின் உள்ளுந்துதலால் நீங்கள் அழைக்கப்படாவிடில், எந்த காரணமும் உங்களுக்கு போதாது. அழைக்கப்பட்டதாக உணர்கிறீர்களா... எந்த காரணமும் உங்களை தடுக்காது"

இன்று கிறிஸ்து நம்மை பார்த்து கூறுகிறார்: என் தந்தையால் என்னிடம் ஈர்க்கப்படாத எவரும் என்னிடம் வர இயலாது! ஆம் அன்புக்குரியவர்களே  ... நம் இறைவன் நம்மை தொடர்ந்து தன் அன்பினால் ஈர்த்தவண்ணமே இருக்கிறார்... அதை நாம் உணர்ந்து நம்மையே ஈர்க்கப்பட அனுமதிக்க வேண்டும். 

இன்று பிலிப்பு இறைவனால் எத்தனை அழகாக பயன்படுத்தப்படுகிறார் என்று நாம் இறைவார்த்தையில் கேட்கிறோம், ஏனெனில் அவர் தன்னேயே ஈர்க்கப்பட அனுமதித்தார். அந்த எதியோப்பிய அமைச்சர் அதிசயமாய் இறைவனை கண்டடைகிறார், திருமுழுக்கு பெறுகிறார்... ஏனெனில் அவரது ஆர்வத்தின் காரணமாய் தன்னையே இறைவனால் ஈர்க்கப்பட அவர் அனுமதித்தார்.

இறைவன் நம் உள்ளத்திலே பல நல்லெண்ணங்களையும் நற்சிந்தனைகளையும் விதைத்த வண்ணமே இருக்கிறார்... அவரால் நாம் ஈர்க்கப்பட வேண்டும்... அப்போது நம் வழியாய் இவ்வுலகம் பெரும் அதிசயங்களை காணும். அவரால் ஈர்க்கப்பட நான் தயாரா?

Jesus - an Experience!

Wednesday, 3rd week in Eastertide

18th April,  2018: Acts 8: 1b-8; Jn 6: 35-40

When things were getting worse the believers were getting stronger. They were scattered, but once in diaspora they continued their witnessing. There was something in them that made them just reckless about their new experience. That experience was so gripping that it made them forget all the pain they had to go through.

We keep receiving news after news of people who are troubled, tortured, maltreated and threatened at the hands of the mindless and irrational fanatics these days. These brothers and sisters too are capable of it because they are gripped by the experience they have had of the Risen one.

Just yesterday we were discussing about some youngsters who have expressed their willingness to go to Syria, to be of assistance and consolation to the people who are suffering due to inhumanity there. What a radical choice -  will it be possible without being gripped by a life changing experience? 

Jesus cannot remain for me an idea to be discussed, nor a principle to be fought for, but a person to be loved, a person to be experienced! For me today Jesus has to become that experience,  that experience which grips me to a total transformation that I will fear nothing, for I know my Lord will raise me up on the last day, come what may!

ஏப்ரல் 18: கிறிஸ்து ஒரு அனுபவம்

கருத்தியல் உண்மைகளும் வாழ்வியல் அனுபவமும் 

இந்த நாட்களிலே தொடக்க கால திருச்சபையை பற்றி நாம் படித்து கொண்டு வருகிறோம். நாம் அறியும் ஒரு தெளிவான உண்மை... அவர்களை சுற்றியிருந்த சூழல் கடுமை ஆக ஆக, அவர்களும் மேலும் மேலும் வலிமை பெற்றவர்களாய் மாறிக்கொண்டே வந்தனர்! காரணம்... அவர்களது அனுபவம், உயிர்த்த கிறிஸ்துவின் அனுபவம்! அந்த அனுபவம் அவர்களை முற்றிலுமாய் மாற்றியிருந்தது. 

இன்று பல இடங்களிலிருந்து கிறிஸ்தவ சகோதர சகோதரிகள் துன்புறுத்தப்படுவது பற்றியும், தாக்கப்படுவது பற்றியும், அச்சுறுத்தப்படுவது பற்றியும், மிரட்டப்படுவது பற்றியும் செய்திகள் நமக்கு வந்த வண்ணமே உள்ளன. சிந்திக்க தயாரில்லாத அடிப்படைவாதிகளின் எந்த அச்சுறுத்தலுக்கும் அஞ்சாது துணிந்து தங்கள் கிறிஸ்தவ வாழ்வையும் சாட்சியத்தையும் தொடரும் இந்த சகோதர சகோதரிகளும் கூட, அதே அனுபவத்தால் ஆட்கொள்ளப்பட்டவர்களே. 

நேற்று நாங்கள் சிலர் பேசிக்கொண்டிருந்த போது  ஒருவர் சில இளைஞர்களை பற்றி பகிர்ந்துகொண்டார்... அந்த இளைஞர்கள் சிரியாவுக்கு செல்ல தாங்கள் தயாராய் இருப்பதாகவும், அங்குள்ள போராலும் அமைதியின்மையாலும் பாதிக்கப்பட்ட மக்களுக்கு ஆறுதல் கூறவும் உதவவும் வேண்டுமென ஆவலாய் இருப்பதாகவும் கூறியுள்ளார்கள். இவர்களும் உயிர்த்த கிறிஸ்துவின் அனுபவத்தால் ஆட்கொள்ளப்பட்டவர்களே!

கிறிஸ்து வெறும் கருத்தியலாய் இருந்துவிட்டால் போதாது, நாம் தாங்கிப்பிடிக்கும் உண்மையாய் இருந்துவிட்டால் போதாது...நம்மை ஆட்கொள்ளும் அனுபவமாக அவர் மாற வேண்டும். கிறிஸ்து யார் என்று நான் எனது அனுபவத்தால் பிறரோடு பகிர வேண்டும். அப்போது மட்டுமே என் வாழ்வு இந்த உலகிற்கும் எனக்கும் ஒரு மாற்றத்தை ஏற்படுத்தும்.

17th April, 2018: Acts 7:51-8:1a; Jn 6: 30-35

Sometimes when I counsel persons to look at Christ and the suffering that he underwent, at the endurance he had and at his capacity to surrender himself into the hands of God, at his capacity to forgive etc.,  they tend to retort saying: 'but he was son of God!" That is a heretic way of thinking,  I threaten them with a smile.

Yes, Jesus was the Son of God but he was a human person and fully so. He was not just appearing to be a human being, he was a human being. As the letter to the Hebrews says,  he was like us,  a human being in everything! That is infact the most challenging part of our faith. That Jesus lived our life,  he went through all that we experience ourselves: feelings and temptations, sufferings and anxieties, irritations and all of human realities. We tend to overlook that because, if we accept it we have to accept also the challenge of we ourselves living in his footsteps.  

The early Church was highly conscious of this call and we have today in the first reading the fruit of this - Stephen. Stephen was a chip from the same block as Christ. Luke while recounting the scene of Stephen's martyrdom, makes it a point to record those words that he said at the end: those were the very words that Jesus said when he died. Luke repeats it here to impress upon us that this is what we are called to be: a chip from that same block.

Do not be carried away by things that you apparently see - the people thought Moses gave them bread - it was God who gave it to them. It is easy for us to be satisfied with the apparent superficial mode of living our Christian life. The Lord says, No - you are challenged to become like Him, like Christ, a chip from that very same block!

ஏப்ரல் 17: அவரை கண்டு, அவராக...

கிறிஸ்தவ வாழ்வு என்பது கிறிஸ்துவாக மாறுவதே 

மனதில் பாரங்களோடு சிலர் வந்து பகிரும்போது, அந்த கவலைகளுக்கு உண்மையிலேயே பொருள் தெரியாத போது, அவர்களை பார்த்து சிலுவையை பாருங்கள், அதில் தொங்கும் கிறிஸ்துவை பாருங்கள், அவர் பட்ட துன்பங்களை பாருங்கள், அனைத்தையும் தாண்டி அவர் தன்னையே தந்தையின் கரங்களில் ஒப்புக்கொடுத்த விதத்தை பாருங்கள், என்று நான் சொல்வதுண்டு... உடனே அவர்கள், "என்னதான் இருந்தாலும் அவர் கடவுளின் மகன்; அவரால் முடியும்" என்பார்கள். உடனே நான் அவர்களை பார்த்து, "நீங்கள் இப்போது சொன்னது ஒரு தப்பறை, இதற்காக திருச்சபையிலிருந்து கூட உங்களை விலக்கி வைக்க முடியும்" என்று பயமுறுத்தி சிரிப்பதுண்டு!

ஆம், கிறிஸ்து மனிதனாக வாழ்ந்தார், அந்த துன்பங்களை எதிர்கொண்டார்... அவர் மனிதனை போல் வாழவில்லை, ஒரு மனிதனாக வாழ்ந்தார்.  எபிரேயருக்கு எழுதப்பட்ட திருமுகம் நமக்கு கூறுவதுபோல, பாவம் தவிர மற்றனைத்திலும் அவர் மனிதனாகவே வாழ்ந்தார். பல முறை நாம் இதை பொருட்படுத்துவதே இல்லை, ஏனெனில், இதை நாம் ஏற்றுக்கொண்டால், வேறொரு சவாலையும் நாம் ஏற்க வேண்டியிருக்கும்... அவரை கண்டு அவராகவே வாழ்வதே அந்த சவால் - அதுவே கிறிஸ்தவர் என்ற பெயருக்கு உண்மை பொருளாகும். தொடக்க கால திருச்சபை இதை தெளிவாய் உணர்ந்திருந்தது.

அதை வாழ்ந்து காட்டிய  ஒருவரை தான் இன்று முதல் வாசகத்தில் சந்திக்கிறோம் - ஸ்தேவான். ஸ்தேவான் கொல்லப்பட்ட காட்சியை விளக்கும் போது லூக்கா மறவாமல் ஸ்தேவான் இறந்தபோது கூறிய வார்த்தைகளை குறிப்பிடுகிறார், அதற்கு ஒரு காரணமுண்டு. அதென்னவென்றால், கிறிஸ்து சாகும் போது சிலுவையில் கூறிய அதே வார்த்தைகளை ஸ்தேவானும் கூறுகிறார்... கிறிஸ்துவின் அதே மனநிலையோடு அவர் உயிர்துறக்கிறார், ஏனெனில் கிறிஸ்துவின் அதே மனநிலையோடு அவர் வாழ்ந்துவந்தார்.

தங்களுக்கு வானிலிருந்து மன்னா அளித்தது மோசே தான் என்று மேலோட்டமாகவே தங்கள் நம்பிக்கை வாழ்வை வாழ்ந்து கொண்டிருந்த அந்த மக்களை சிந்திக்க வைக்கிறார் கிறிஸ்து. வெளியடையாளங்களையும், புறத்தோற்றங்களையும் தாண்டி நமது நம்பிக்கை வாழ்வு வாழப்பட வேண்டும். ஆழமாக கிறிஸ்துவை கண்டு, அவரை புரிந்துகொண்டு, அவராகவே நாம் வாழ்வது தான் உண்மையான கிறிஸ்தவ வாழ்வு என்பதை நாம் எப்போது உணரப்போகிறோம்?
