Wednesday, 8th week in Ordinary Time

30th May, 2018: 1 Peter 1: 18-25; Mk 10: 32-45

A tree is known from its fruits, the Word would remind us! The Word today speaks of a similar reality. It presents to us two crops of people: one an old crop and the other a new crop, a newly born community of persons, born anew in the blood of Christ. The seed of the latter crop is the very blood of Christ! The Question is: which crop do I belong?

Jesus presents to us both the contrasting mentalities, the popular mentality of dominance and control and the Jesus mentality of service and collaboration; the popular mentality of judgment and categorisation and the Jesus' mentality of compassion and understanding; the popular mentality of division and superiority and the Jesus' mentality of communion and solidarity! 

One will not fit in the other for they two are contrasting mentalities and the Lord wants us to make a choice and make it known! Jesus is preparing his disciples today in the Gospel, to be a crop of the latter kind. Of course, he finds it tough but he does not mind it and he will never compromise on it. 

The same he expects from us - that we grow to bear fruits, fruits belonging to the crop of Christ himself! We better become aware, to which crop we belong and we better check our seed!

மே 30: உனது விதை?

உனது வெளிப்பாடுகளே உனது விதையை வெளிப்படுத்தும். 

1 பேதுரு 1: 18-25; மாற் 10: 32-45

ஒரு மரம் அதன் கனிகளிலிருந்து அறியப்படுகிறது என்கிறது இறைவார்த்தை. இன்றைய இறைவார்த்தையும் அப்படிப்பட்ட ஒரு உண்மையை தான் நமக்கு முன்னிறுத்துகிறது. கிறிஸ்து இன்று இரண்டு வகையான மக்களை குறித்து நம்மிடம் பேசுகிறார்... ஒன்று உலகப்பாங்கான ஒரு வகை மக்கள், மற்றொன்று கிறிஸ்துவின் மனநிலையை கொண்ட மக்கள் - இந்த இரண்டாம் வகையினர், கிறிஸ்துவின் இரத்தத்தினாலே பிறந்தவர்கள் என்று முதல் வாசகம் நமக்கு விளக்குகிறது. இவர்களது விதை கிறிஸ்துவின் இரத்தமே!

இந்த இரண்டு வகையினரையும் நமக்கு நினைவுறுத்துகிறார் கிறிஸ்து - ஆட்சியையும் அதிகாரமும்வேண்டுவோர் ஒருவகை, அன்பும் சேவையும் கருதுவோர் மறுவகை; தீர்ப்பிடுதலையும் தங்கள் விருப்பத்தை திணிப்பதையும் விரும்புவோர் ஒருவகை, புரிதலையும் அடுத்தவரின் உணர்வை மதித்தலையும் முன்னிறுத்துவோர் மறுவகை; பிரிவினையும் ஏற்றத்தாழ்வும் பாராட்டுவோர் ஒருவகை, சமத்துவத்தையும் ஒருமைப்பாட்டையும் முன்னெடுப்போர் மறுவகை. 

ஒன்றிற்கு ஒன்று ஒவ்வாதவை இவை. இதில் எந்த மனநிலை எண்ணில் மேலோங்கியுள்ளது என்று சிந்தித்து தெளிய அழைக்கிறது இன்றைய வார்த்தை. இதில் இரண்டாம் வகையினராக தன்  சீடர்கள் இருக்கவேண்டும் என்று விழைகிறார் கிறிஸ்து. அவர்களுக்கு அதை தொடர்ந்து அறிவுறுத்தியும் வருகிறார்... அவர்களோ அதை புரிந்துகொள்வதாய் இல்லை. ஆனால் அவர் தன் நிலைப்பாட்டிலிருந்து பின்வாங்க போவதில்லை... தான் மறித்தாவது அவர்கள் அந்த வேறுபாட்டை உணர்ந்துவிட வேண்டும் என்று தொடர்ந்து போராடுகிறார். 

நம்மையும் அதே நிலைபாட்டிற்கே அழைக்கிறார்... கிறிஸ்துவின் மனநிலையை நாம் கொண்டிருக்க வேண்டும் என்றால், அவரது இரத்தத்தினால் பிறந்தவர்களாக நாம் மாறவேண்டும், வளரவேண்டும். அன்பு சகோதரமே... உனது நிலைப்பாடு என்ன? கிறிஸ்துவின் இரத்தமே உனது விதையா?

The choice to be Holy

Tuesday, 8th week in Ordinary Time

29th May, 2018: 1 Pet 1:10-16; Mk 10: 28-31

From yesterday's call to prove our mettle fitting the Reign, follows today's call to remain holy! Holiness is not merely an act, but an attitude; it is not doing a few things in a manner that is considered popularly to be holy, but living our life, every moment of it, in a manner that is Godly. 

We are called to be holy because the one who has called us is Holy, reminds St. Peter today, resounding the call given in the book of Leviticus. When we decide for ourselves and choose to embark upon a sincere journey of holiness, Jesus promises us beautiful things - things that make us secure, persons who love and admire us, protection of God almighty that would guide us - but along with this, persecution... and ofcourse eternal life, of which we partake already by virtue of our Baptism! 

Hence, the choice is ours: to choose God, remain in God and persevere through all trials or to give up and choose the desires of ignorance, as explained in the first reading, and lose our original identity and the dignity of children of God! 

Salvation is not some magical act that the Lord performs for us, but it is our 'growing into heaven'. It is our daily maturity, by our constant faith, persistent hope and unfailing love - it is our choice for holiness! 

மே 29: தூய்மையுள்ளவர்களாய்...

அவர் தூயவராதலால், நாமும் தூயோராய்.

1 பேதுரு 1:10-16; மாற் 10: 28-31

நாம் அனைவரும் அழைக்கப்பட்டவர்கள்... நாம் தீயினில்  புடமிடப்பட்டவர்களாய் வாழ வேண்டும் ஏனெனில், நாம் அழைக்கப்பட்டவர்கள். நம்மை அழைத்தவர் தூயவராய் இருப்பதனால் நாமும் தூயோராய் வாழ அழைக்கப்பட்டுள்ளோம். தூயோராய் வாழ்வது என்பது ஒரு தேர்வு... நாமாக தெளிந்து தேர்வது. இறைவனை போல் வாழ, அவரது விழுமியங்களுக்கு ஏற்ப வாழ நாமாக தேர்ந்து தெளிவது!

இதை நாமாக தேர்ந்துகொள்ளும் போது நமக்கு கிறிஸ்து பலவற்றை வாக்களிக்கிறார் - நாம் தியாகம் செய்வதை விட நூறு மடங்கு, ஆசீர்வாதம், பிறரிடமிருந்து அன்பு, உறவுகள்... இவற்றோடு இன்னல்களும்கூட... மேலும் மறுமையில் நிலை வாழ்வும்! நமது திருமுழுக்கிலே இந்த அழைப்பை பெற்றுக்கொண்ட நாம், அதே திருமுழுக்கிலே இந்த நிலைவாழ்வையும் பெற்றுக்கொண்டுள்ளோம்! ஆனால், அந்த நிலைவாழ்விற்குள் நாம் படிப்படியாய் வளரவேண்டும். 

நமது அன்றாட வாழ்வு, அதில் நாம் மேற்கொள்ளும் தெரிவுகள், நமது முடிவுகள், நமது முக்கியத்துவங்கள், இவற்றினால் நாம் நமக்கு அளிக்கப்பட்டிருக்கும் நிலைவாழ்விற்குள் படி படியாய் வளரவேண்டும். இதுவே, தூயோராய் வாழ்தல். இறைவனுக்குரியத்தை தேர்ந்துகொள்வதோ, இவ்வுலகத்திற்குரிய மடமையை தேர்ந்துகொள்வதோ, நமது கையில் தான் உள்ளது என்பதை ஆணித்தரமாக கூறுகிறது இன்றைய இறைவார்த்தை... நாம் எதை தேர்ந்துகொள்ளப்போகிறோம்?

அவர் தூயவராதலால், நாமும் தூயோராய் வாழ முடிவெடுப்போம்... சரியான தருணத்தில் சரியான முடிவுகளை எடுத்து அன்றாட வாழ்வில் நாம் தூய்மையுள்ளோராய் வளர்வோம்!

மே 28: புடமிடப்பட...

தீயினில் புடமிடப்படும் பொன்னாய் மின்னிட 

1 பேதுரு 1: 3-9; மாற் 10: 17-27

புடமிடப்படுதல் என்பது பொன்னுக்கு அவசியம்... அது தீயினால் சுடப்பட்டு, உருக்கப்பட்டு, தூய்மையாக்கபட்டு உருப்பெறுதலாகும்... பேதுரு இன்று நமது மண்ணக வாழ்வின் அனுபவத்தை தீயினில் புடமிடப்படுதலுக்கு ஒப்பிடுகிறார் - புடமிடப்படுவது நமது "நம்பிக்கை". நான் இறைவனை நம்புகிறேன், இறைவனின் பிள்ளை நான் என்பதை உறுதியாக ஏற்றுக்கொள்ளுகிறேன் என்று சொல்லினால் உறுதி படுத்தினால் போதாது ஆனால் நமது வாழ்வின் அன்றாட அனுபவங்களில், துன்பங்களில், சோதனைகளில். அதை நாம் உறுதிப்படுத்தவேண்டும், சாட்சியம் பகர வேண்டும். 

இறைவனுக்கு உரியது ஏற்றது எது என்பதை உணர்ந்து அதன் படி நம் வாழ்வை அமைத்துக்கொள்வதும் அவற்றையே தவறாமல் தேர்ந்துகொள்வதுமே நமது நம்பிக்கையை நாம் உறுதிப்படுத்தும் வழிகளாகும். இன்றோ பலரும், தங்களுக்கு வசதியானதை, துன்பம் தராததை, அதிகம் தொந்தரவு தராததை தேர்ந்துகொள்வதிலேயே குறியாய் இருப்பதை நாம் காண்கிறோம். உண்மை, கடவுளுக்கு ஏற்றது, சரியானது, நேர்மையானது என்ற காரணங்கள் அனைத்தும் இடம்தெரியாமல் மறைந்து போவதை நாம் பார்த்துக்கொண்டுதான் இருக்கிறோம். 

துன்பங்கள், சோதனைகள், இன்னல்கள் என்னும் தீயினில் புடமிடப்பட, புடமிடப்பட்ட பொன்னாய் மின்னிட நான் தயாரா? 

The Testing by Fire

Monday, 8th week in Ordinary Time

28th May, 2018: 1 Pet 1: 3-9; Mk 10: 17-27

We need to prove our mettle, to say literally, we need to prove our metal! We need to prove that we are gold, when it comes to our dedication to the Lord. The days are such that compromises are not only permitted, they have become the order of the day. 

One has to become an expert in compromising one's values, without making major breakages. It is a kind of technique learnt and taught by one generation to the other, how to compromise but still appear not to have broken anything too serious. It is all about the level and limits of compromise today. 

But with Lord this can never be true! Even a minor compromise is a major breakage. There are no speaking of the levels and limits of breakage... it is all about yes or no; there or not; whether something is compromised or not. That is why we are to be tested in fire, the fire of daily struggles and unceasing temptations. 

We need to be careful because without our knowledge we would have slid into a situation of compromise. Let us be vigilant, for the devil is prowling round like a roaring lion!

Our Being, Identity and Mission

27th May, 2018 - The Solemnity of the Holy Trinity 

Dt 4: 32-34,39-40; Rom 8: 14-17; Mt 28: 16-20

In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit...

This is the most famous phrase we have grown with. The making of a sign of the Cross with the names of the persons of the Trinity has a number of significance: 
           accepting the rule of the Cross over us,  
           invoking the continuous presence of the Lord in our lives and 
           above all the blessings of the Trinitarian God on ourselves. 

The solemnity we celebrate today is one of the defining truths of a Christian and one of the earliest revelation of God that gave the Christian disciples their identity.

It is very clear to understand that our faith in the Holy Trinity, has its origins from the earliest of the historical times. The Scriptures already possess this clarity which signify that this way of understanding and believing has been there from the Early Christian times.

Apart from this historical roots,  we see in the concept and belief of the Holy Trinity,  an important foundation for Christian life. In the name of the Father and the Son and the Spirit... In their name, we have our being, our identity and our mission! 

In their name we have our being: 
Right at the creation we find God the Creator at work through God's Word, while the Spirit of God hovered over the waters.  God made humans in God's image and blew God's Spirit to give life and the Word took that same image to save that humanity at a later stage. Our very being is in the Trinity. 

In their name we have our identity: 
Believing in the Holy Trinity affects our identity as human persons and as Christians. As human beings we are challenged by the image we possess and as Christians we are challenged by the nature of that image. The nature of God is a communion. Hence, our very identity is communitarian, and our journey has to be constantly towards this perfection - to live in communion, in communion with God and with our brothers and sisters. 

In their name we have our mission: 
The mission that is entrusted to us is not merely what is done by us as individual persons but it is a holistic mission to establish the Reign of God,  that is the Reign of Communion,  the Reign of Love,  the Reign of Equality,  the Reign of Order, the Reign of Justice. This Reign exists and is exemplified in the Trinity. We need to stand for that, fight for that, even be ready to give our life for that Reign - the Reign of Truth and Love!

Today let us grow in our consciousness about the sense of intimacy and connectedness we have with the Trinitarian God. May that consciousness make us immensely grateful,  truly loving and passionately communitarian. In the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, Amen!

மே 26: குழந்தைகளாய் வளர்வோமா?

இறையரசு குழந்தைகளுக்கே உரியது!

யாக் 5:13-20; மாற் 10:13-16

சிறுபிள்ளைத்தனம் என்று பல நேரங்களில் நாம் குறிப்பிடுவது முதிர்ச்சியற்ற சிந்தனைகளையும் செயல்பாடுகளையுமே. இன்றைய வார்த்தையோ, இதையே இறையரசிற்கு தேவையான மனநிலையாய் நமக்கு முன்னிறுத்துகிறது. முதிர்ச்சியென்பது குழந்தை பருவத்தைவிட்டு வளர்வது எனினும், குழந்தை மனநிலையை விட்டு அகல்வது அல்ல. 

வளர்ந்தவர்கள் என்று தங்களையே அடையாளப் படுத்திக்கொள்ளும் இன்றைய சமுதாயத்தின் மாந்தர்கள் எப்படிப்பட்டவர்களாக இருக்கிறார்கள் - நிர்ணயிக்கப்பட்ட சிந்தனைகள், கணிக்கப்பட்ட தீர்ப்புக்கள், காரணமில்லாத வரையறைகள், உலகம் தங்களை பற்றி என்ன நினைக்கிறது என்பதை முன்னிறுத்தியே செயல்படும் போக்கு, அடுத்தவர் இழைத்த தீங்கினை மறவாது கணக்கு வைத்திருக்கும் பாங்கு, உள்மன அமைதிக்கும் உண்மையான மகிழ்ச்சிக்கும் மேலாக அடுத்தவரின் அபிப்பிராயங்களை உயர்த்தும் சிந்தனை... என மேலோட்டமாகவே வாழும் மாந்தர்களாக இன்றைய மனிதர்கள் வாழ்ந்துவிடுகிறார்கள். 

குழந்தையின் மனநிலை என்பது எதில் அடங்கியுள்ளது: தூய்மையான மனது, இறைவன் மீது குழப்பமில்லா சார்பு, தீர்ப்பிடாத உறவுகள்... இதுவே குழந்தையின் மனநிலை, சிறுபிள்ளையின் வாழ்க்கைமுறை. நாம் வளரும் போது இழந்துவிடும் சில அருமையான குணங்கள் இவை. இவற்றை நாம் தக்கவைத்துக் கொண்டோம் என்றால், என்றும் சிறுபிள்ளைகளாகவே இருப்போம். நாம் சிறுபிள்ளைகளாகாவிடில் இறையரசில் நுழைய மாட்டோம் என்பதை உணர்ந்து தெளிவோம்... நம் அன்றாட வாழ்வில் குழந்தைகளாய் வளர்வோமா?

Can we grow up to be children?

26th May, 2018: Saturday, 7th week in OrdinaryTime

James 5:13-20; Mark 10:13-16

When we call something a child's play, we intend to say it is an easy task, a no-taxing job, an uncomplicated project! Today Jesus calls the Reign of God a child's play... but meaning to say just the contrary: to say how difficult it is for the grown ups to reach! 

Grown ups, in varied senses. Grown ups... are typically those who have totally fixed mindsets, prefabricated judgments, do's and don't's that have not much rationale, obsessed with what the world thinks of them, keeping a meticulous account of the wrongs that others have done, placing social recognition even before interior peace and true joy and various other attitudes that dominate the human thinking today.

The qualities of a Child that are underlined here by the first reading and the Gospel are: innocence of heart, unsophisticated dependence on God and non judgmental relationships! These are the very things we lose as we grow up. Remaining a child in these will make us part of the Reign of God...that is why it is a child's play, not a grown up's game! 

Can we grow up to be childlike?

Being Christians Today - A Feast day Assurance

Feast of Mary Help of Christians: 24th May, 2018

Mary Help of Christians, is a title that has been attributed our Blessed Mother right from the third century, but got its prominence in the 16th century and made popular in the 19th century! 

The battle of Lepanto won in the 16th century was a victory of the Christians over the Ottoman Turks; and in 19th Century Don Bosco's experience of an ever present mother in the Blessed Mother, specially when the Waldensian anti-catholics were up against him, and the re-entry of Pope Pius IX from  his political exile, made Don Bosco polemic about the Lady help of Christians. 

Looking at the historical significance of the title directly connected to the 16th century battle of Lepanto and the exile of the Pope in the 19th century, we tend to think today, that this title comes alive as the battle against the Christians is thickening all over the globe. 

The Christian way of life and the Christian values are put to question by the so-called free thinking individuals, relativising every thing to the extent that there is nothing left to hold on to, to firmly base ourselves or to have any certainty in life. Life is relativised, morals are relativised, truth and justice are relativised and even humanity is relativised today! 

This is not a moment for us Christians to give up, but a moment to stand up and proclaim the Truth, the Way and the Life... Mary Help of Christians, will be our inspiration and protection. Speaking particularly of India, or other places were religious fundamentalism seems to be raising its head against Christian faith - we are marching towards a future that holds for us more and more troubles and testing, hypothesizing with the present run of the course. Mary Help of Christians, is a title that is apt today and it calls for three immediate actions on our part as Christians:

UNITE as Christians under One Lord who has called you! 

UNTIE the knots that keep you locked from each other and establish seamless relations!

UNDERSTAND the true faith and its holistic meaning, beginning to live your faith everyday!

May Mary Help of Christians, help us Christians today, to live true to our faith!

2018 - is a very special year! 

It is 150 years since the Basilica of Mary Help of Christians 

in Valdocco, Turin was consecrated, in 1868. 

Let us heed to the call of our Blessed Mother and 

unite as loving children of the Help of Christians, 

and grow closer to her son and our Saviour, Lord Jesus Christ.
