ABSOLUTE ALLEGIANCE TO THE ALMIGHTY

4th Sunday in the Ordinary Time

Dt 18: 15-20; 1Cor 7: 32-35; Mk 1: 21-28

It was a home for street kids. As I entered, a calendar caught my attention. It had the words running thus: with the young missionaries of hope and joy. I hoped to see some young religious in formation or some people getting ready to go on a mission. But the picture that accompanied it was more surprising. It was a click of a bunch of street kids with eyes all shining and faces beaming with smiles. They had called them 'missionaries of hope and joy'. Today's first reading came alive to me when I saw this. When the Lord said,  the Lord would raise a prophet as good as moses and that prophet was not only Jesus who did great wonders when he was still alive but in and through Jesus,  it is you and I who are called to be prophets today, here and now. 

The second reading points to us the way of being powerful prophets of God...and the way is,  an absolute allegiance to the almighty. To profess our allegiance to God with nothing to distract us,  nothing to preoccupy us,  nothing to hinder our speaking God's word or doing God's works. There is a saying in Tamil that says, only when you have something to safeguard under your care, you have anything to fear. When you have nothing to lose, you have nothing to fear. These kind of persons are true prophets!

  

The Gospel presents to us the model par excellence of a prophet of God: the very Son of God who professes and practices such a perfect allegiance to God that every one who saw him,  heard him was either taken up or threatened.   He had nothing to lose, because all that mattered to him was doing his Father's will. Neither the powerful high priests and scribes, nor Herod not even the demons could frighten him - what an absolute man of God! His was an authority that came from his personal integrity and flawless faithfulness to God. 

Our absolute allegiance to the almighty will make us like children who trust and depend totally on their parents. At times even a blind following of the directions given by God would suffice for us to work on our Sanctification and that of those around us.

28th January, 2018: Don Bosco - A lover of the young

Our Challenge: That we understand our call to love the young, those in our care, those who depend on our goodness 

Our Prayer:

Lord God, thank you for Don Bosco, a man who loved what the young loved, in order to make them love what they ought to love. Like Don Bosco, grant us the grace to place always the needs of the others, especially those who depend on us in some way, before any of our needs. May we be sacrificing enough to give up anything for their good and for their salvation. We make this prayer through Christ Our Lord. Amen

சனவரி 27: அவரன்றி நீயேது?

இரவோ பகலோ புயலோ மழையோ ....

தாவீது என் மகன் என்று இறைவன் உரிமையோடு சொல்ல காரணமென்ன, சிந்தித்திருக்கிறீர்களா? அவரது போர்த்திறனா? வீரமா? வெற்றிகளா? அல்லது பேராற்றலா? இறைவனின்றி இவையெல்லாம் அவருக்கு ஏது? இவற்றிற்கெல்லாம் மேலாக ஒரு குணம் தாவீதுக்கு இருந்தது...அதுவே அவரை கடவுளுக்கு நெருக்கமானவராக, நமக்கு மாபெரும் எடுத்துக்காட்டாக பிரித்துக்காட்டுகிறது. அவரது தாழ்ச்சியும் இறைவனின் குரலுக்கு செவிமடுக்க அவரிடம் இருந்த தயார்நிலையும் தான் அது. 

தாழ்ச்சி என்பது உண்மையை காணக்கூடிய ஆற்றலாகும். நான் யார், என் வாழ்வில் நான் பெற்றுள்ள அனைத்தும் எங்கிருந்து வந்துள்ளது, இதை எல்லாம் பெற்றுள்ள நான் செய்ய வேண்டியதென்ன என்ற உண்மைகளை முழுமையாய் உணர்ந்திருத்தலே தாழ்ச்சியாகும். இந்த உண்மை உணர்வு இருந்தால் நான் வெற்றிபெறும் போது ஆழமான மகிழ்வும், தவறும் போது நிதானமான சீர்தூக்கலும் எனக்குள்ளே நிகழும், என்னை மனிதனாக்கும். அதை தான் முதல் வாசகத்தில் தாவீதின் வாழ்வில் நாம் காண்கின்றோம். தனது தவற்றை நாத்தான் சுட்டிக்காட்டும் போது முதலில் அது தன்னை குறித்து தான் சொல்லப்படுகிறது என்று தெரியாமலே கேட்டுக்கொண்டிருக்கும் தாவீது, "நீயே அந்த மனிதன்" என்ற வார்த்தைகளை கேட்டவுடனேயே இவ்வளவு நேரம் தன தவற்றை உணர்த்தியது இறைவன் தான் என்பதை உணர்ந்து அவரிடமே சரணாகின்றார்.  

நம் வாழ்விலும் கூட, இரவோ பகலோ, வெயிலோ மழையோ, புயலோ பூகம்பமோ, வெற்றியோ தோல்வியோ, சாதனையோ சோதனையோ, இன்பமோ துன்பமோ, எதுவானாலும் இறைவன் நம்மோடே இருக்கிறார் என்பதை உணர்ந்து வாழ கற்றுக்கொள்ள வேண்டும். ஒரு சிறு இடர் வரினும் எல்லாம் முடிந்துவிட்டது போன்று நாம் திணறும் பொது, உண்மையிலே இறைவனின் பிரசன்னத்தை நாம் கேள்விக்குள்ளாக்குகின்றோம். மற்ற நேரங்களில் எல்லாம் பேசிய பேச்சுகள் என்ன, வீசிய சூளுரைகளென்ன... இவையெல்லாம் வீணே. உள்ளம் உடையும் நேரத்தில் தான் உண்மைகள் வெளிப்படும்... நம் உள்ளம் உடையும் அனுபவத்தில் தான் இறைவனோடு நமக்குள்ள உறவு வெளிப்படும்.

புயல் கண்டு திணறும் சீடர்களை போலல்லாமல், தாவீதை போல  உள்ளம் உடைந்தாலும் அதை இறைவனுக்கு சரணாக்குவோம்... உடைந்த உள்ளத்தை இறைவன் ஒருபோதும் ஒதுக்குவதில்லை.

Saturday, 3rd week in Ordinary Time

2 Sam 12: 1-7, 10-17; Mk 4: 35-41

The first reading today brings out the best element of David for our consideration. David was favoured in the eyes of God, not for his valour or for his victories, nor for his eloquence or for his talents. The outstanding quality of David, that makes him an example to all of us, is his humility and his capacity to listen to the Lord. 

Humility is the ability to see the truth. And the capacity to listen to the Lord is the easiest way to observe the truth; the truth that is ever present right in front of our eyes. Even while Nathan was speaking, David did not realise the truth; but when the prophet said to David, "You are the man!", David realised his folly, that he has deluded himself from seeing the Lord who was right there with him all the while, even when David indulged in all the evil that he did. In his humility, he submits himself instantly to the mercy of the Lord. 

Weak as we are and tempted as we are, our capacity to listen to the Word of the Lord and our humility to submit ourselves to the mercies of the Lord, are those which can really make us persons of faith. The storm and the sea, the heavens and the creatures therein, everything obeys the Lord, and why should we hesitate to submit to the Lord? 

In faith let us ask the Lord and the Lord will give us a pure heart and a steadfast spirit!

NOVENA TO THE FEAST OF ST. JOHN BOSCO - DAY 6

27th January, 2018: Don Bosco - Father and Friend of Youth

Our Challenge: That we understand our call to have a filial attachment to Don Bosco, as a man who had a special charism from God! 

Our Prayer:

Lord God, thank you for Don Bosco, a man who loved the young genuinely, with the heart of a father and friend. Grant us the grace of loving people with sincerity of heart. May we make a difference in the lives of those who are around us, that they may feel related to us - as father, or friend, or guide or companion! May our relationships be genuine and life changing that we may be efficacious agents of your Reign on earth. We make this prayer through Christ Our Lord. Amen

சனவரி 26: விதையும் அதன் பலனும்...

திமோத்தேயுவும் தீத்துவும் தரும் பாடம் 

திமோத்தேயுவும் தீத்துவும் இன்று நமக்கு மாதிரிகளாய் தரப்படுகின்றார்கள்... இருவரும் அப்போஸ்தலராம் பவுலடிகளாரின் சீடர்கள். தன் வார்த்தையை கேட்பவர்களையும் தன் வாழ்க்கையை காண்பவர்களையும் இறையேசுவுக்காக வென்றெடுப்பதில் தூய பவுல் அடிகளாருக்கு இணை அவர் மட்டுமே. இறையாட்சி மண்ணில் மலர இவ்வப்போஸ்தலர்களும் சீடர்களும் தங்கள் வாழ்க்கையை எந்த அளவுக்கு தியாகம் செய்தார்கள் என்று சிந்திக்க அழைக்கும் அதே நேரத்தில் இன்றைய வாசகங்கள் நமக்கும் அதே அழைப்பு தரப்பட்டுள்ளது என்பதை நினைவில் கொள்ள நம்மை அழைக்கின்றன. 

கொடையாய் நமக்கு தரப்பட்டுள்ள கிறிஸ்தவ நம்பிக்கையை குறித்து எவ்வளவு அழகாக பவுலடிகளார் திமோத்தேயுவுக்கு எழுதுகிறார் என்று இன்றைய முதல் வாசகத்தில் காணுங்கள். விதையாய் நம் மனதில் தூவப்பட்டுள்ள இந்நம்பிக்கையை காத்து வாழ்வது, அதை அடுத்தவரோடு பகிர்ந்து கொண்டாடுவது என்ற நமது அழைப்பை நாம் உணர்ந்திருக்கின்றோமா?

நம் உள்ளத்தில் தரப்பட்டிருக்கும் இந்த கொடையாம் நம்பிக்கை இறையாட்சி என்னும் பயிராய் முளைக்க வேண்டும், பலன் தரவேண்டும் என்பது இறையழைப்பு. ஆனால் அதை வளரச்செய்வது நமது கையில் இல்லை...அது இறைவன் தரும் கொடையாகும். பொறுமையிழக்காமல், ஆர்வமிழக்காமல், கவனம் சிதறாமல் விதைக்கப்பட்ட விதையை (நம்பிக்கை) பாதுகாப்பது நம் பொறுப்பு, அதை பலனளிக்க செய்து பயிராக (இறையாட்சியாக) உருமாற்றுவது இறைவனின் பொறுப்பு - இதை உணர்ந்து வாழ்வதே கிறிஸ்தவ அழைப்பு. 

சோதனைகள் எதிர்ப்புக்கள் சவால்கள் மத்தியில் கிறிஸ்தவ மதிப்பீடுகளை இழக்காமல் வாழ்வதே நம் நம்பிக்கையை காப்பது என்று பொருள்படும். இது நம்மால் முடியும் ஏனெனில் ஆற்றலின் ஆவியை, அன்பின் ஆவியை, சுய கட்டுப்பாட்டின் ஆவியை இறைவன் நமது உள்ளத்தில் பொழிந்துள்ளார். திமோத்தேயுவை போல தீத்துவை  போல பவுலடிகளாரின் பாதையில் இறைவார்த்தையின் மக்களாய் நம்பிக்கையில் நம் வாழ்வை ஊன்ற செய்வோம், இறையாட்சியின் அறுவடையை பலுகச் செய்வோம்.

26th January: Remembering Sts. Timothy and Titus

2 Tim 1: 1-8; Mk 4: 26-34 

Timothy and Titus are two models we are presented with today.  They were both finds of the Apostle Paul on his journeys. Inspiring the listeners to make a life choice is a special gift that some are given with. St. Paul possessed this and used it well for the Reign of God. Timothy and Titus join the great band of apostles that Jesus initiated. 

How beautifully Paul speaks of faith in the first reading of today (we have chosen the one from the letter to Timothy)...as something that is gifted, something that has to be nurtured and something that has to be handed over and celebrated! 

Faith is a gift from God, as life and growth are. Just like the sower sows and waits for the grains to sprout, so do we sow all the goodness that we can and wait for the life and growth that God alone gives. We cannot be impatient and agitated to see their fruits, fruits will appear in God's own time, for it is the Lord who is at work!

Our faith has been sown in the ground of our hearts, it has to grow into the Reign of God on earth. Our responsibility is to nurture the seed (the faith) and await the fruit (Reign). It is not within our capacity to establish the Reign where we are, but it is within our capacity to live our faith to the full, because we are given a Spirit of power, love and self control! When we live it, the Reign will sprout!

The call the establish the Reign, however remains open and obligatory even today. Because, the Reign is yet to be made visibly present in the world. Every baptised person is entrusted with the task of establishing the Reign of God and what is your response? Do examples such as Timothy's and Titus' impel us towards action?

26th January, 2018: Don Bosco - A Spiritual Father

Our Challenge: That we understand our Catholic Spirituality and follow it in its depth. 

Our Prayer:

Lord God, thank you for Don Bosco, a man who promoted reverence to the Blessed Sacrament, love for Blessed Mother and loyalty to the Holy Father. He was a Spiritual Father to hundreds of youth and continues to be the same for millions of them today. Make us grateful for the Catholic faith we have and help us deepen our understanding and appreciation for it. We make this prayer through Christ our Lord.

சனவரி 25: மனமாற்றம் - கடவுளுக்கான முழுமன தேர்வு

கடவுளை நோக்கிய வாழ்வுக்கான மாற்றம்

தூய பவுலடிகளாரின் மனமாற்றத்தை நினைவுகூரும் நாள் இன்று. நமது மனமாற்றத்தை குறித்து சிந்திக்க அழைக்கிறது இவ்விழா. இன்றைய  காலச்சூழலில் மனமாற்றமும் மதமாற்றமும் ஒன்றிற்கொன்று குழப்பம் தரக்கூடிய சொற்களாக  பயன்படுத்த படுகின்றன. நற்செய்தி அறிவிப்பு என்பது மதமாற்றத்தை நோக்கியதல்ல, மாறாக மனமாற்றத்தை நோக்கியது என்று நாம் ஆழமாக இன்று புரிந்துகொள்ள முயல்வோம். நற்செய்தியை அறிவிக்காவிடில் ஐயோ எனக்கு கேடு (1 கொரி 9:16) என்று கூறுவதை மனதிற்கொள்வோம். 

ஒவ்வொரு நாளும் நற்செய்தி நம்மை வந்து அடைந்த வண்ணமே உள்ளது... அன்று பவுலடிகளாருக்கு ஏற்பட்ட பெரும் காட்சியை போல் இல்லை எனினும், இறைவனின் வார்த்தை நம்மோடு பேசாத தினமே இல்லை, பேசாத பொழுதே இல்லை என்பதே உண்மை. அவ்வாறிருக்க, நாம் இவ்வார்த்தையை உணர்ந்து உள்வாங்குகின்றோமா, ஒவ்வொரு நாளும் மனம் மாறுகின்றோமா என்பதே கேள்வி. இந்த மனமாற்றம் என்பது இறைவனை நோக்கிய பயணம், முழுமையாய் கடவுளை தேர்ந்துக்கொள்ளும் வாழ்க்கை, முழுமனதோடு முழு உள்ளத்தோடு, முழு ஆன்மாவோடு, வாழ்வின் முழு ஆற்றலோடு இறைவனை தெரிந்துகொள்ளும் வாழ்க்கை முறை. இது அன்றாட வாழ்வின் ஒரு சவால் தானே?

 இறைவன் தன் பேசுகிறார் என்று உணர்ந்த மறு தருணமே தரையில் கிடந்த சவுல் கேட்கும் கேள்வியை காணுங்கள்: இறைவா நான் என்ன செய்ய வேண்டும்? இதுவல்லவா நாம் தினம்தினம் கேட்க வேண்டிய கேள்வி - இறைவா இன்று நான் என்ன செய்ய வேண்டும் என்று எதிர்பார்க்கின்றீர்? உம்மை தேர்ந்துகொண்ட வாழ்வு வாழ நான் உண்மையில் என்ன செய்ய வேண்டும்?

25th January: Conversion of St. Paul

Acts 22: 3-16; Mk 16: 15-18

The feast of Conversion of St. Paul invites us to reflect on our conversion. Unfortunately, in today's context, the word 'conversion' has more political connotation than spiritual! 

In fact today is a beautiful occasion for us to remind ourselves that conversion is not about numbers and increasing the fold. It is a personal decision to go towards God, an about-turn (as the Greek word 'metanoia' suggests); it is an absolute choice for God! Choice for God...because we begin to see the role that God has played in our life and choose to actively acknowledge it; Absolute... because nothing else matters as much as God and God's will do! 

We are called to conversion... may not be as dramatic as that of St. Paul's, as we read in the first reading today, but more demanding! Yes, we are called to daily conversion. To be aware, each day and each moment, of those things that take us away from our progress towards God. Nothing - no demonic powers, no distracting languages, no cunning serpents, no poisoning lifestyle - should lead us away from God... we are called to make an absolute choice every day, for God and for God's Word.  Not merely in words but by my very life, I am obliged to proclaim God's message. "Woe to me if I do not preach the Gospel," reminds me St.Paul (1 Cor 9:16). 

Notice the very first question that Paul asks the Lord after he recognises it was the Lord: What am I to do Lord? That is a relevant question for each of us to ask every day: What am I to do Lord, to turn to you and to make an absolute choice for you!
