Ways to belong to the flock: Possess Joy and the Holy Spirit

Saturday, 4th week in Eastertide
28th April, 2018: Acts 13: 44-52; Jn 14:7-14

The disciples were filled with joy and holy spirit, says the first reading today. It becomes hard to connect that this is the ending note of a passage speaking about the rejection and insult of the apostles by their own fellow Jews. Elsewhere too we would read that they returned happy that they were able to suffer for the sake of the name of  Jesus (cf. Acts 5:41). 

However it would make clear sense once we read and understand what Jesus tells us in the Gospel today: whoever believes in me will do the works that I do and will do greater ones than these. The apostles seem to have inherited it from their Master to consider themselves blessed for having to suffer for righteousness sake, to thirst for justice. Joy, for Jesus meant being in the Spirit and being in the Spirit meant standing by the Lord, with truth and dexterity!

It used to be my normal experience to be laughed at, when I speak to groups about standing for truth and facing the consequences. Be it groups of youngsters or groups of consecrated people, they smile when I say, 'stick to the truth and stand for the right wherever you are.' They would smile and conclude saying, 'then that would be the end of us"...meaning that they would lose any future if they did it! It would be like, they telling me: that sounds good when said, but living it is not feasible. I appreciate the honesty of these people, but constantly question myself: when will we be matured enough to shake the dust off our feet and walk, and keep walking!

6. ஆவியில் மகிழ்ந்திருங்கள் 

சீடர்களோ தூய ஆவியால் ஆட்கொள்ளப்பட்டு மகிழ்ச்சியில் திளைத்திருந்தார்கள், என்று இன்றைய முதல் வாசகம் முடிகிறது. இந்த முடிவுக்கும், வாசகத்தில் நாம் படிப்பதற்கும் எந்த தொடர்பும் இல்லாதது போல தோன்றும், ஏனெனில் வாசகம் முழுவதும் சீடர்கள் எவ்வாறு நிராகரிக்கப்பட்டார்கள் என்பதையே படிக்கிறோம்... ஆனால் அத்தனை புறக்கணிப்புக்களுக்கு பிறகும், அவர்கள் மகிழ்ச்சியில் திளைத்திருந்தார்கள் என்கிறது இறைவார்த்தை.  வேறொரு இடத்திலும் கூட, அவர்கள் கிறிஸ்துவுக்காக துன்புறுவதில் மகிழ்ச்சியுற்றார்கள் என்று நாம் படிக்கிறோம் (தி.ப. 5:41)

உண்மையில் இதற்கு பொருள் கொள்ள வேண்டுமென்றால்  இன்றைய நற்செய்தியில் கிறிஸ்து கூறுவதை நாம் புரிந்துகொள்ள வேண்டும்: என்னில் நம்பிக்கை கொள்பவன் என்னை காட்டிலும் அறிய செயல்கள் செய்வான்! தங்கள் குருவை முழுமையாய் பின்தொடரும் சீடர்களை நாம் இங்கு பார்க்கிறோம். அவரை போலவே, நீதிக்காக பசி தாகம் கொண்டவர்களாக வாழவும், உண்மைக்கு சான்று பகர்வதே தங்கள் அழைப்பு என்பதை உணரவும் அவர்கள் தங்கள் ஆசிரியராம் கிறிஸ்துவிடமிருந்தே கற்றுக்கொண்டார்கள். தங்கள் குரு கிறிஸ்துவை போன்றே அவர்கள் தூய ஆவியால் ஆட்கொள்ளப்பட்டு மகிழ்ச்சியில் திளைத்திருந்தார்கள்!

பலமுறை எனக்கு நிகழ்ந்த ஒரு அனுபவம் உண்டு - இளைஞர்களோடும் சரி, இளம் துறவிகளோடும் சரி... அவர்கள் எதிர்கொள்ளும் சில பிரச்சனைகளை குறித்து பேசும்போது "உண்மைக்காக நில்லுங்கள், அதனால் ஏற்படும் விளைவுகளை சந்திக்க தயாராக இருங்கள்" என்று நான் கூறும்போதெல்லாம்  என்னை பார்த்து ஒரு சிறு புன்னகையோடு அவர்கள் கூறியதுண்டு: 'அதோடு எங்கள் கதை முடிந்துவிடும்' என்று. அவர்களது வெளிப்படையான கருத்தை நான் பாராட்டினாலும் எனக்குள்ளாக ஒரு கேள்வியை கேட்டுக்கொள்வேன்: கால்களில் உள்ள தூசியை தட்டிவிட்டு அடுத்த நல்ல காரியத்தை நோக்கி செல்லும் மாற்றம் நமக்குள் எப்போது வரப்போகிறது ?

5. உள்ளம் கலங்காதீர்கள் 

அவரது மக்களாய் வாழ கிறிஸ்து கற்று தரும் அடுத்த வழி: நீங்கள் உள்ளம் கலங்காதீர்கள். 

கிறிஸ்துவே நமக்கு அளிக்கபட்ட வாக்கு, அவரே அதன் நிறைவு; அவரே வழி அவரே நாம் சென்றடைய வேண்டிய இலக்கு; அவரே உண்மை, அவரே வாழ்வின் உண்மையான பொருள். அவரை நாம் கொண்டிருக்கும்போது நமக்கேதும் குறையேது? அவரை நாம் கொண்டிராவிடில் நமக்கு நிறைவளிப்பது எது? குழப்பங்களும், சோதனைகளும் வரும்போது நாம் கலங்கினோம் என்றால், அவரது உடனிருப்பை நாம் மறக்கிறோம் என்று பொருள். எதை கண்டும் நான் அஞ்சிடேன் - ஏனெனில் உண்மையை நான் அறிவேன், உண்மை வழி என் கண் முன்னே உள்ளது, என் வாழ்வு என் கையில் உள்ளது, ஏனெனில் என் ஆண்டவர் என்னோடு உள்ளார்! 

எதை கண்டும் நான் அஞ்ச தேவை இல்லை, ஏனெனில் அவரறியாது எதுவும் நடப்பது இயலாது - என் ஆற்றலுக்கு மீறிய சோதனையும் என்னை அணுகாது. அவரில் நான் ஊன்றி வாழும்போது என் வாழ்வே அவருக்கு சான்றாகி மிளிர்கின்றது...சான்றாய் மாறாது வாழும் எந்த வாழ்வும் கிறிஸ்தவ வாழ்வாய் இராது. கலங்காதிருப்போம், அவர் மக்களாவோம், நம்மில் அவரை பூரிப்படைய செய்வோம்!

Ways to belong to the Flock: Let nothing disturb you!

Friday, 4th week in Eastertide

27th April, 2018: Acts 13: 26-33; Jn 14: 1-6

The fifth way to belong to the Lord's flock is to be aware of the presence of the Lord and not letting anything disturb us. Let nothing disturb you, says the Lord in the Gospel today and repeats the same in our personal lives. 

Jesus is the promise and the fulfilment, he is the way and the destiny, he is the truth and the true meaning of our life. When we have the Lord, we shall lack nothing; when we do not have him with us, nothing can complete us. At times when crises seem to surround us and situations threaten to overpower us, all that we need to do is - take a deep breath and say: I have the truth, I know the way, I have my life - because the Lord is with us!

Nothing can disturb us beyond a limit, if they do we are not sufficiently rooted in the Lord. When we are not sufficiently rooted in the Lord, we cannot be true witnesses to the Lord. If we cannot truly witness to the Lord, we share no goodnews to the world. When we share no goodnews to the world our Christian life is empty! How can we hear the Father say: You are my son, my daughter; today I have become your father and your mother?

Ways to belong to the Flock: Be honestly persevering

Thursday, 4th week in Eastertide 
26th April, 2018: Acts 13: 13-25; Jn 13: 16-20

The first reading presents to us a vast gamut of information: Paul and his companions proceeding while John remaining back, the history of Israel with all the ups and downs, right up to John the Baptist! The Gospel presents Jesus who speaks of being a worthy messenger to the Master and of the one who would turn a traitor. Out faith life is full of experiences of faithfulness and failures. They need not be moments or experiences of desperation, but concrete reminder of our reality and a call to be conscious of my strengths and weaknesses!

I am reminded of a phrase I came across recently somewhere: the Lord does not expect you to be perfect, but he wants you to be honest! Knowing our weakness and knowing our limitations and acknowledging them with humility, and being ready to work on ourselves, begin anew everytime and being at the task given to us by our master: that is being witnesses to the ends of the earth...that is the point. 

Our weaknesses are not truly hindrances as long as we admit them - that is being honest. When we admit them, our weakness become channels of strength - for it is n weakness that we feel the grace of God. Remember Paul's words: for when I am weak, then I am strong. Finally it is all about perseverance... persevering, with honesty; being honestly persevering!

4. தளராத உண்மையுள்ளம் கொண்டிருங்கள்

இன்றைய முதல் வாசகம் பற்பல தகவல்களை நமக்கு அளிக்கின்றது... பவுலும் அவரோடு இருந்தவர்களும் தொடர்ந்து பயணிக்க, யோவான் மாற்கு மட்டும் எருசலேம் திரும்பினார் என்றும், இஸ்ராயேல் மக்களின் வரலாற்றில் நடந்த ஏற்ற தாழ்வுகள், எழுச்சிகள் வீழ்ச்சிகள் அனைத்தை குறித்தும் நாம் காண்கின்றோம். நற்செய்தியில் கிறிஸ்து தனது நம்பிக்கைக்குரிய சீடர் யாரென்றும் தன்னோடே இருந்து வழிமாறவிருக்கும் தவறிய சீடரை குறித்தும் பேசுகிறார். நமது நம்பிக்கை வாழ்வும் இவ்வாறே நிறை குறைகள், வெற்றிகள் வீழ்ச்சிகள் என பலவகை பட்ட அனுபவங்கள் நிறைந்திருக்கும், அனால் இவை நமது மனதை தளரச்செய்ய அல்ல மாறாக நம்பிக்கையில் வளரச்செய்ய என்பதை இன்று நமக்கு இறைவார்த்தை நினைவூட்டுகிறது. 

கிறிஸ்துவின் மந்தையை சார்ந்தவர்கள், கடவுளின் மக்கள் எனப்படுபவர்கள், மனந்தளராதவர்களாய் ஊக்கமிக்கவர்களாய்  வாழக்கூடியவர்கள். அதற்காக தவறுகளிலிருந்து பாடம் கற்க அவர்கள் மறுப்பதில்லை. உண்மையுள்ளம் என்பது, தனது தவறுகளை தெளிவாய் உணர்ந்த உள்ளம், தனது வலுவின்மையை மறைக்காது ஏற்கும் உள்ளம்... ஆனால் எந்நேரத்திலும் தளராத உள்ளமாகவும் வாழ்தலே இறைவனின் மக்களுக்கான அடையாளம். 

என் குறைகள் எனக்கு தடைகளல்ல... அவை என்னை தாங்கும் அவரை எனக்கு உணர்த்தும் வழிகள். வலுவின்மையிலே உண்மையாய் மனம் தளராதவர்களே இறைவனின் மக்களாய் வாழ இயலும், ஏனெனில் அந்த வலுவின்மையிலேயே, இறைவன் எனக்கு அருளூட்டுகின்றார். தளராத உண்மையுள்ளம் வளர்ப்போம், நம்பிக்கையில் ஆழப்பட்டு துளிர்ப்போம்.

Ways to belong to the flock: Carry out Orders

Wednesday, 4th week in Eastertide (if it were not 25th April!) 

Acts 12:24- 13:5a; Jn 12: 44-50

If it were not to be April 25th, then we would have reflected on the third in the series of instructions to belong to the Flock of the One Shepherd...it is to Receive and Carry out Orders. 

A life of faith is all about getting orders and carrying them out. We find in the first reading of the day that the Apostles got orders directly from the Holy Spirit, to set apart Barnabas and Paul for a particular task. Elsewhere too in the Acts we see similar accounts of getting orders for the regular running of the Church. In the Gospel, Jesus clarifies that he got his orders from his father and instructs us that we too need to follow suit. Receive orders and carry them out!

Two things can hinder us from Receiving Orders: One, not hearing: because we do not listen sufficiently. We are so busy with running our own show that we are thoughtless about the orders that direct us constantly! 

The second reason is more serious: pretending not to hear! This is a conscious despise of the orders that are given us. The Lord, the Spirit of the Lord keeps inspiring within us or keeps supplying us with clear cut directions and orders to be on the right path. At times owing to the inconvenience it can cause, or the difficulty it will put us through, we pretend not to hear those orders and proceed with what we think best. And when things turn out for the worst, we begin to panic and blame everyone else, including God.

Can we train ourselves to receive orders and carry them out in our daily life?

ஏப்ரல் 25: வியக்கத்தக்க மனிதர்களாய்

நற்செய்தியாளர் புனித மாற்கு திருவிழா  

இன்று நாம் தியானிக்கும் நற்செய்தி பகுதியை நான் படிக்கும்போதெல்லாம் மறக்க முடியாத நினைவு ஒன்று உண்டு... பல ஆண்டுகளுக்கு முன்னாள் நடந்த ஒரு நிகழ்வு... என் உறவினர்களில் ஒரு சிறுவனுக்கு இன்றைய நற்செய்தி பகுதியை பற்றி விளக்கிக்கொண்டிருந்தேன். நம்பிக்கை கொண்டோரை பற்றி கிறிஸ்து கூறும் பண்புகளை கூறிக்கொண்டிருந்தேன் ... சீரும் பாம்பை கையில் எடுப்பார்கள், நஞ்சை உண்டாலும் அசையாது நிற்பார்கள், பேய்களை ஓட்டுவார்கள்... அவன் சற்று நிமிர்ந்து என்னை பார்த்தான். கண்கள் விரிய ஒரே கேள்வியில் விளக்கத்தை நிறைவு செய்தான்: "அப்படியானால் நாம் எல்லாம் சக்திமானா?" (சக்திமான் - அந்த நாட்களில் தொலைக்காட்சியில் பிரபலமாய் இருந்த குழந்தைகள் தொடர் அது. சிலருக்கு நினைவிருக்க கூடும்.) 

ஆம் அப்படிப்பட்ட சக்திமான்களாய், வியக்கத்தக்க மனிதர்களாய் வாழவே நாம் அழைப்பு பெற்றுள்ளோம். ஏனெனில் நமக்கு அருளப்பட்டிருக்கும் ஆவியோ கோழையுள்ளத்தை கொண்ட ஆவியல்ல, வல்லமையும் அன்பும் கட்டுப்பாடும் கொண்ட ஆவி! நமது வாழ்வை கண்டு இந்த உலகம் வியந்து நிற்க வேண்டும், எள்ளி நகைக்க கூடாது. 

இப்படிப்பட்ட வியக்கத்தக்க குணங்கள் இருப்பினும் தாழ்ச்சியோடும் பணிவோடும் நற்சான்றோடு வாழ நம்மை அழைக்கிறது இன்றைய திருவிழா...ஏனெனில் இப்படிப்பட்ட வியக்கத்தக்க கூட்டத்தில் தான் சிறுவனாய் இளைஞனாய் இருந்த மாற்கு இணைகின்றார்... அவரது திருவிழாவையே நாம் இன்று கொண்டாடுகின்றோம். 

பேதுருவிடமிருந்தும், பவுலிடமிருந்தும் கேட்டறிந்த தரவுகளை வைத்து தனது நற்செய்தியை எழுதும் மாற்குவின் சித்தரிப்பில் கிறிஸ்துவின் உண்மை மனித தன்மை அழகாய் வெளிப்படுகிறது. அன்பும், கனிவும், புரிந்துணர்வும், எளிமையும் நிறைந்த ஒரு கிறிஸ்துவை நாம் இந்நற்செய்தி வழியாய் அறிகின்றோம்... அப்படியே நாமும் நமது வியக்கத்தக்க அழைப்பை உணர்ந்தவர்களாக அதே சமயம் அன்பும் கனிவும் புரிந்துணர்வும் நிறைந்தவர்களாக வாழ முற்படுவோம். 

THE WORD AND THE SAINT

Superhuman but simply human!
25th April, 2018: Feast of St. Mark, the Evangelist 
1 Pet 5: 5b-14; Mk 16: 15-20

I cannot forget an experience that I had a few years ago, once I was trying to explain today's Gospel reading to one of the tiny tots in the family. After I had explained all that Jesus had said about picking up the serpent and drinking the deadly potion and fighting the demon... the boy just looked at me and asked : so all of us are Shaktimaan? (Shaktimaan was one of those superhuman cartoon characters those days in India).

The readings today remind us of the superhuman call that we have all received! We are given the Spirit that is the Spirit of courage, power and self control and the way we live has to be tremendous to the world which looks on. If only we realise the freedom, the love and the hope that is confered on us by God, by our Saviour and by the indwelling Spirit, we would marvel at ourselves and the blessings we are endowed with!

In spite of those superhuman qualities, we are called to be humble and loving, compassionate and kind. That makes the powers given to us more efficacious, just like the Lord whom we mirror in our own selves. 

Mark a simple young boy joined the band of these superhumans and today we celebrate him. In his Gospel, which he writes from the preachings that he heard primarily from Peter and Paul, of course, we see that human Jesus so beautifully manifested - in his compassion, simplicity and down to earth living. Just as this simple young boy, let's join the band too... proclaiming in our own way everyday the Gospel of love and hope, compassion and understanding. 

Can the Church be lost in a crisis?

Ways to belong to the Flock: Find the hand of God

4th week in Eastertide: 24th April, 2018
Acts 11: 19-26; Jn 10: 22-30

The hand of God was with them, we read in the first reading today. And Jesus says in the Gospel that no one can take his sheep away from his hand or from his Father's hand! The hand of God is that which gives us protection in times of trials and victory in times of struggle. The Word invites us to live with the confidence that the hand of God is always with us. 

Very easily we hear people say, what is the use of being with the Lord...I am facing so many problems? Or others who say, is this how I am repaid for my faithfulness to God? As a Church or as individual persons of God, we cannot be lost in a moment of crisis. The moments of difficulty has to strengthen us further. My sheep will never be lost; they know me and listen to me, says Jesus.

When we embark upon a journey that is in keeping with the will of God, when we take up projects that glorify the name of God, and when we start the good things that we are upto in the name of God, we are called to count on the hand of God. And not just then, but very specificall along that journey when situations turn trying and difficult, we are called to hold firm to the hand of God.

We see great feats achieved by people that transform the world and enhance humanity, they are done with the hand of God. When selfishness and self glory dominates, the great things may happen but its efficacy will not last long! As St. Paul would say, "whether we eat or drink, or whatever we do, let us do everything for the glory of God" (cf. 1 Cor 10:31). Then we will dare to count on the hand of God!
