THE LORD GOES... TO BE!

Ascension of the Lord: 10th May, 2018

Acts 1:1-11; Eph 4: 1-13; Mk 16:15-20

Ascension. The Lord goes up, the Lord goes up to his Father, to the One who sent him, to the one who had given him a mission to accomplish! The Lord goes up, but has he accomplished?

The Lord goes up, with the PROMISE OF THE FATHER: I am going, but you remain! 

I am going says the Lord; but assures that he will not abandon us totally. The Lord will give us an helper who would fill us with the same passion and fire that was in the Son of God. The promise is so concrete and sure, that the next step depends on that. They would be told to do what they have to do. And then it happens...the promise of the Father, crying out to the apostles, to us: you are my beloved sons and daughters, today I have begotten you in my Son! It is the promise of the Father as we read in the Book of Joel (chapter 2) that the Father will fill us with the Spirit!

The Lord goes up, with a PARTING MESSAGE: I am going, You too go!

Go and be my witnesses! Go proclaim my message! Go continue my task! It is like the famous relay race! The Lord has done his rounds, and now the baton is in our hands. It depends on us to take it forward, says the Lord, as he gives his parting message to the Apostles. Go all over the world; Go to all people; Go to take my message!

The Lord goes up, into a PRESENCE BEYOND: I am going, but I am with your forever. 

This going of the Lord is not a going in the literal sense of the word, because if the Lord were to be gone, we would not exist. The Lord goes, to be with us ever more powerfully, ever more closely and ever more unceasingly. As the Lord promises, the Lord have overcome the World (Jn 16: 33). The Lord goes, precisely that he could be with us always and everywhere, till the end of times, as a conqueror, as the power that enlivens us, as a person who has gone before us showing us the way.

The Lord Goes... to be with us...forever, always and everywhere!

மே 9: ஆவியார் ஒளியாவார்

உண்மையை உணர்த்துவார்; அனைத்தையும் அறிவிப்பார்!

தி.ப. 17:15,22 -18:1; யோ 16: 12-15

ஆவியார் அனலாவார் என்று நேற்று நமக்கு எடுத்துரைத்த கிறிஸ்து, அவர் ஒளியாவார் என்று இன்று உணர்த்த விழைகிறார். உண்மையை உணர்த்துபவராக, இறைவனிடமிருந்து அனைத்தையும் நமக்கு அறிவிப்பவராக தூய ஆவியை நமக்கு அறிமுக படுத்துகிறார். ஆம்... நாம் யார், நமது அழைப்பு என்ன, இறைவன் யார், அவரோடு நமக்கு உள்ள உறவு என்ன, இந்த குறிப்பிட்ட நேரத்தில் இறைவன் நம்மிடமிருந்து எதிர்பார்ப்பது என்ன... என்று அனைத்தையும் நமக்கு அறிவுறுத்துபவராக, இறைவனிடமிருந்து பெற்று நமக்கு அறிவிப்பவராக இருக்கிறார் தூய ஆவியார். எனவே, இந்த ஆவியாரின் ஒளியை பெற்ற எவரும் அனைத்தும் அறிந்தவராய் வாழ்வில் தெளிவு பெற்றவராய் இருக்கிறோம்.

உண்மையனைத்தையும் தூய ஆவி நமக்கு உணர்த்தினாலும், நாம் பல வேளைகளில் அதை உணராமலேயே இருக்கிறோம்: ஒன்று, நமது அறியாமையால், அல்லது அறியாமல் இருந்துவிடலாம் என்ற சோதனையால் அல்லது இதை அறிய எனக்கு விருப்பமில்லை என்ற நமது பிடிவாதத்தால். 

அறியாமை இருப்பின், பெரும் தடை இல்லை ஏனெனில் ஒளியாம் ஆவியானவர் வரும்போது அனைத்தும் தெளிவு பெற்றுவிடுகிறது, நமது அறியாமை என்னும் இருள் விலகிவிடுகின்றது. பவுல் மற்றும் பலரை போல அறியாதிருந்தவர்களின் அகக்கண்களை திறந்த ஆவியாரை நாம் இறைவார்த்தையில்  சந்திக்கிறோம்.

அறிந்துகொள்வதால் பல பிரச்சனைகளும் பொறுப்புக்களும் வருகின்றனவே, ஆகையால் அறியாதவண்ணமே இருந்து விடலாமா என்ற ஒரு சோதனை நம்மை மேற்கொள்ள வாய்ப்பு உண்டு! சீடர்களுக்கு அது நேர்ந்தது - காரணம், பயம்! ஆனால் துணிச்சலின் ஆவி, மனதிடத்தின் ஆவி நம்மை மேற்கொள்ளும் போது இந்த சோதனை காலைப்பணியாய் மறைந்துவிடுகிறது. 

எதையும் நான் அறிந்துகொள்ள தயாராக இல்லை என்று முடிவெடுத்து இறைவனின் வார்த்தையை தள்ளி வைக்கும்போது நாம் வேண்டுமென இருளை தேடிச்செல்கிறோம்! ஏதென்சு நகர மக்கள் இதை தான் இன்றைய முதல் வாசகத்தில் செய்கிறார்கள்... இறைவார்த்தை அறிவிக்கப்பட்டபோது, அதை பார்த்து சிரிக்கிறார்கள், ஏற்க மட்டுமல்ல அதை புரிந்துகொள்ளவே மறுக்கிறார்கள்: அவர்களது தற்பெருமை அவர்களை உண்மையை அறிய இயலாது செய்துவிடுகிறது. 

வார்த்தையை கேட்கவும், புரிந்துகொள்ளவும் திறந்த மனதோடு நாம் தூய ஆவியாரை ஏற்றுக்கொள்ளவில்லை என்றால், உண்மையை இழப்பது நாமே! ஒளியை இழப்பது நாமே! தெளிவை, வாழ்க்கைக்கு வழியை இழப்பது நாமே! 

உணர்வோம், வார்த்தையையும், அதை அறிவிக்கும் இறை ஆவியாரையும் ஏற்க தயாராவோம்!

Wednesday, 6th week in Eastertide

9th May, 2018: Acts 17:15,22 -18:1; Jn 16: 12-15

The Spirit of the Lord convicts because the Spirit leads us to the truth. We have all the truth right in front of us. Either we fail to see them and understand them, or we are tempted not to see them or understand them, or worse still we deliberately choose not to see them and understand them!

When we fail to see, the Spirit gives us the wisdom and leads us to see it, leading us to light, as St Paul tries to lead the Athenians. It is not a tough job for the Spirit, for the Spirit by nature is enlightening and the very presence of the Spirit makes things visible!

When we are tempted not to see, the Spirit fills us with the courage to see it, making us free and bold as children of God, to fight the tempter, the prince of lies, the force of darkness. This is what Jesus promises his disciples... you will be my witness, bold and courageous witnesses says Jesus!

When we deliberately choose not to see, the Spirit convicts us, as we heard yesterday and makes us understand how mistaken we are. Peter, Paul, the other apostles and everyone who owes his or her rapport with God to a dramatic conversion, would vouch for this role of the Spirit. 

But for all of these, I need to open my mind to the Word. If not I will laugh at the Word or postpone listening to it, to another convenient moment, as the people do in the first reading today. Am I ready to receive the Word and the Spirit?

மே 8: ஆவியார் அனலாவார்!

ஆறுதலாளிக்கும் ஆவி, அனலாய் வரும் ஆவி!

தி.ப. 16: 22-34; யோ 16: 5-11

இன்று காலை பேருந்து நிறுத்தத்தில் காத்திருந்த போது ஒரு அம்மா தன்  சிறுபிள்ளையை கைபிடித்து ஏறக்குறைய தர தரவென இழுத்து செல்வதை கண்டேன். அழுதுகொண்டே அந்த சிறுவன் தன்னால் முடிந்தவரை போராடிக்கொண்டிருந்தான். எங்கும் காண்கின்ற காட்சிதான்... பள்ளிக்கு செல்லும் காட்சி. தன் தாயோடே இருக்க வேண்டும் என்று விரும்பும் அந்த சிறுவனும் தவறல்ல, படித்து முன்னேற வேண்டும் என துடிக்கும் தாயும் தவறல்ல...இது வாழ்க்கையின் எதார்த்தம்!

தன் சீடர்கள் அடுத்த நிலைக்கு முன்னேறவேண்டுமென துடிக்கிறார் இயேசு. அவர்களோ அவர் பிரிந்து செல்கிறார் என்று வருத்தம் கொள்கின்றனர். முன்னேற அவரே ஒரு திட்டமும் வைத்திருக்கிறார்... ஆவியானவர்! இறைவார்த்தை நம்மை இவ்வாரத்தின் இறுதியில் வரும் பெருவிழாவுக்கு  தயார் செய்ய தொடங்கிவிட்டது. ஆவியாரை சந்திக்க நாம் தயாரா?

தூய ஆவியானவர் வெறும் ஆறுதலின் ஆவியல்ல, அவர் அனலாவார்! சுட்டெரிக்கும் அனல், தூய்மைப்படுத்தும் அனல், புடமிடும் அனல்... அதனால் தான் அவரை சந்தித்த முதல் தருணத்திலேயே, அனைவரும் கேட்கும் முதல் கேள்வி... நான் என்ன செய்ய வேண்டும்? என்னையே மாற்றிக்கொள்ள நான் என்ன செய்ய வேண்டும்? மீட்பு பெற நான் என்ன செய்ய வேண்டும்? 

அதே கேள்வியை கேட்க நாமும் தயாராவோமா?... இறைவனுக்கு ஏற்றவனாக, ஏற்றவளாக வளர நான் என்ன செய்ய வேண்டும்: ஆவியே அனலாய் வா... என் வாழ்வு தூய்மைபெற ஒளிசேர்க்க வா!

Tuesday, 6th week in Eastertide

8th May,  2018: Acts 16: 22-34; Jn 16: 5-11

Jesus wishes that his disciples moved on to the next level. He is trying his best to introduce them to the Advocate,  the Divine Counselor!  Today's readings bring out one important aspect of this advocate: the aspect of the Spirit which convicts the individuals,  communities and all those who truly believe. When the Advocate comes, he will show the world how wrong it was!

When we truly meet the Spirit: it can be a challenging experience! The Spirit is not only the Spirit of consolation but also of conviction. Because, the Spirit is the Spirit of truth and justice! We would do well to listen to the Spirit or we shall grow obstinate and obsolete. 

Receiving the Spirit is not an ordinary task. It is a divine mission that the Lord promised to those who sincerely ask for it. For when the spirit comes... the Spirit would convict the person. What should we do to be saved. ..that is the question that would fill our hearts.

The Word has begun to prepare us these days to celebrate the coming of the Spirit at the end of this week... let us take focus our attention on the Spirit of the Lord. Let us ask that all important question:  What should I do to be acceptable in the eyes of God? 

Love that Prevails

Monday, 6th week in Eastertide

7th May, 2018: Acts 16: 11-15; Jn 15:26 - 16:4a

Speaking of the new believer in the Lord, a lady of considerable renown, Paul says she prevailed over us! It is true love that prevails, a selfless love inspired by the newly accepted good news! The Lord opened her mind to listen to the Word and her heart to be the consolation for the messengers of the Word. The Lord provides through her.

Today, providing for the messengers of the Word, in ways truly numerous, is one way that we can make love prevail. We may have troubles from every corner, opposition from all sides and forces waiting to devour us - as we say Jesus telling us in the Gospel today. But nothing of this will block us from going ahead in our task and the challenge entrusted to us. 

The Lord will open minds, inspire hearts and remove blocks, that we may have all the back up needed to take the message far and wide. This has been, just as it is at this present moment, my experience too, personally! How many times I would have felt the providence of God, at the exact right moment! Persons coming to my aid, friends pitching in their bit, and so many other unbelievable ways in which the Lord has provided, or numerous ways in which Love has prevailed!

Let us surrender ourselves into the hands of God, the love that prevails over everything and be formed into that love ourselves!

WE ARE CHOSEN

6th Sunday of Easter: 6th May, 2018

Acts 10: 25-26,34-35,44-48; 1 Jn 4:7-10; Jn 15: 9-17

We are Chosen, we are chosen people of God, we are a chosen race: this is a truth that is repeatedly stressed in the Word today. We are given a sign that we are chosen and there is a reason for having been chosen and there is a fruit that is expected of us because we are chosen. Let us understand them one by one.

We are chosen: that needs two clarities. One, we did not choose, but we are chosen! So it is none of our merit that we are within the count of the chosen! If we are here, it is because we are chosen! It not only fills us with a feeling of being special, but it should also fill us with an awe of the inner nature offered unto us. The second clarity is the same as what we said finally here: being chosen is not merely a privilege, but a burden too!

The Sign of being Chosen: Spirit. The sign of being chosen is given in the third person of the Trinity - the Holy Spirit who comes to dwell in us! We become dwelling places of the Spirit, chosen dwelling places of the Spirit (1Cor 3:16 & 6:19). That means our being chosen necessitates two self understandings within us: One, that we are the people of the Spirit and secondly, we belong to God! (1st Reading)

The Reason for being Chosen: Joy. A joy that is complete, is what the Lord wants to offer us. That is the reason for which the Lord has chosen us. A joy that does not fade with time, a joy that does not depend on external conditions and fulfillment of one's desires, a joy that is eternal because the source of it is eternal, timeless: it comes from the Lord! It resides in our hearts and comes from the Spirit who is within; no external conditions can take it away! The Lord fills us with a joy that is not like what the world gives, not like the joy that our possessions give, unlike the joy that our pleasures give... this is the joy that the Lord alone can give! (Gospel Reading)

The Fruit of being Chosen: Love. That you may bear fruit, and bear it abundantly! The fruit is love, the outcome of being chosen is the love that we hold out to every person around us. To love as God loved; without counting the cost, without thinking whether the other deserves it or not; without losing any chance of forgiving and enduring. That is true love and that is the love that we are called to live. (2nd Reading)

We are Chosen... chosen by the Spirit, chosen to be joyful, chosen to love! If we do not love, we do not see the fruits of having been chosen; if we do not have the fruits, it means we do not have the joy of having been chosen; if we do not have the joy of having been chosen, it means we have not allowed the Spirit of the Lord to dwell within us! 

Let us remember! we are the people of the Spirit, we are the Chosen people of God.

We, the Holy Spirit and Love!

Friday, 5th week in Eastertide 

4th May, 2018 - Acts 15: 22-31; Jn 15: 12-17

I have always been fascinated by that formulation we see in the first reading today; the apostles when they communicate their decision after a crisis, they say, "it has seemed good to us and to the holy spirit"... It amuses me to see the spontaneity with which they related to and referred to the Holy Spirit.

When the Holy Spirit takes hold of us, all that we do, all that we choose, all that we decide will be guided by love and love alone! They were ready to give up their tradition, their heritage, their laws, all because they loved their new brothers and sisters in Christ. They did not want to over burden them. 

And Christ goes a step further and says: not just traditions and laws, but even your life, you should be ready to lay down! That is true love. If the Son of God has given up everything for the love that he has for us, why do we hesitate to give up anything...especially our ego, our selfishness, our vain glory!!!

We and the Holy Spirit, if we are in constant rapport, we will be filled with true love! If we are filled with true love, then we would make true disciples to Christ, the Son of God who is Love! We, the Holy Spirit and Love, we will make a wonderful "Christ"ian Community. Shall we?

மே 4: ஆவியும் நாங்களும்

நீ, நான், ஆவியார் மற்றும் அன்பு 

தி.ப. 15: 22-31; யோ 15: 12-17

தூய ஆவியாரும் நாங்களும் தீர்மானித்துள்ளோம்... என்று அப்போஸ்தலர்கள் கூறுகின்ற இன்றைய முதல் வாசகத்தின்  பகுதி  இறைவார்த்தையில் என்னை மிகவும் ஆட்கொண்ட பகுதிகளில் ஒன்றாகும். தூய ஆவியாரை  அவர்கள் உணர்ந்த விதமும் அவரோடு அவர்கள் உறவாடிய விதமும் எவ்வளவு எதார்த்தமாய் இருந்தது என்பது இதில் தெளிவாய் வெளிவருகிறது. இது போன்ற உண்மையான எதார்த்தமான ஆழமான அழுத்தமான உறவு ஒன்றை தூய ஆவியோடு கொண்டிருக்கும் போது அது நமது பேச்சிலும், வழக்கத்திலும், அனைத்து பரிமானங்களிலும் அது வெளிப்படும் என்பது உறுதி. 

தூய ஆவி நம்மை ஆட்கொள்ளும் போது நாம் செய்வது அனைத்திலும், நாம் எடுக்கும் முடிவுகளிலும், நாம் அளிக்கும் முக்கியத்துவங்களிலும் முற்றிலும் முழுமையானதொரு உணர்வை நாம் பெறுவோம். அந்த முழுமையின் ஊற்று அன்பு. ஆவியானவர் அன்பின் ஆவியானவராவார்...ஏனெனில் அவர் கடவுளின் ஆவி, கிறிஸ்துவின் ஆவி, தந்தைக்கும் மகனுக்கும் இடையே உள்ள அன்புறவின் ஆவி... 

இதனால் தான் அப்போஸ்தலர்கள், பிரச்சனைகளை சந்திக்கும் போது, அவற்றை ஒரே திருச்சபையாய்  அலசிய போது, எதையும் விட்டுக்கொடுக்க முன் வந்தனர்... அவர்களது பாரம்பரியம், அவர்களது யூத நம்பிக்கையின் அடையாளம், அனைத்தையும் துறக்க அவர்கள் தயாராய் இருந்தனர்... ஒரே காரணம்: மக்கள் மீதிருந்த அன்பு, சகோதர சகோதரிகள் மீதிருந்த அன்பு, ஆவியின் உறவில் அவர்களில் நிறைந்திருந்த அன்பு. 

கிறிஸ்துவோ தன் வாழ்விலே, சட்டங்களையும், பாரம்பரியங்களையும் மட்டும் அல்ல, தன் உயிரையே அடுத்தவருக்காக கொடுக்க முன்வருவது தான் உண்மை அன்பு என்று எண்பித்தார். நாமும் தூய ஆவியால் நிரப்பப்படும் போது.. நமது சுயநலன்கள், விருப்பு வெறுப்புக்களையெல்லாம் தாண்டி, அன்பினால் மட்டுமே இயக்கப்படுவோம்!

இன்று கிறிஸ்து நமக்கு விடுக்கும் அழைப்பு இதுவே: என் சகோதரனே சகோதரியே, நீ, நான், மற்றும் தூய ஆவியானவர் இணையும் போது அங்கு உண்மை அன்பு பிறக்கிறது! இணைய நீ தயாரா?

Believe and live

Celebrating Apostles Philip and James

3rd May, 2018 - 1 Cor 15:1-8; Jn 14:6-14

Today we celebrate two great apostles, both of them find a prominent place among the list of apostles and have something memorable about them. 

James was the first Bishop of Jerusalem and he along with his brother Jude, was called the brother of Jesus. We find the practical wisdom of James, so imbued with the Spirit of Jesus in his epistle. His insistence on integral living, his predilection for the poor, his advocacy for a life of self-control, are eminently Christian themes that we need to highlight even today.

Philip was a person who brought a lot of people to Jesus, including Nathanael. Philip imbibed the life style of Jesus very quickly as we see him in the Gospels already, speaking like Jesus, using the phrases that Jesus used and reaching out to people as Jesus did and bringing people to Jesus, which Jesus so much loved.

One who believes in me will do things that I do and even more than what i do - this has been the repeated message that Jesus has been giving us these days in the Word. Yes, believing is living. Philip and James, give us this message today: to Beleive in Jesus and live like Jesus, only then can you be worthy of Jesus. Only then will you be able to say (just as Jesus said of his father): 'One who has seen me, has seen Jesus'.
