Living our life from the Core of our Being

Wednesday, 12th week in Ordinary time

June 27, 2018: 2 Kgs 22: 8-13, 23: 1-3; Mt 7: 15-20

By the fruits will the trees be known; by our actions will we be known! Let your actions speak for what you believe and stand witness for what you say! That was not merely the way that Jesus taught, but it was the way Jesus lived. He had no dichotomy of words and deeds, of beliefs and expressions, or of principles and priorities. He himself was able to say, even if you don't believe in me, believe in my works (cf. Jn 10:38). This was possible because Jesus lived his life from the core of his being. 

In the core of his being he knew how he and the Father were united in their vision and their mission. Hence, living from that core of his being he was able to live a life that was absolutely divine amidst all challenges. He dared even say, 'The Father and I are one' (Jn 10:30). 

The first reading has a wonderful symbolism to offer us, in this regard: we too possess what it takes to live such a life as that of Jesus! We have to go to the core of our being, unearth the image and likeness of God that we possess at the core, and bring it to the fore, proclaiming it to the world and installing it on a pedestal from where it rules our life and shines and glows for the others! 

Living our lives from the core of our being: that is the key! As St. Augustine would often say, 'an unreflected life is a wasted life'. Let us accept today the invitation to journey to the core of our being, and begin to live our life from there, bearing fruits worthy of the One who has created, called and commissioned us!

ஜூன் 27: மூலக்கருவிலிருந்து வாழ்ந்திட முற்படு

உன் மூலம், உன் கரு, உன் உரு, உன் பலம் - அறிவாயா?

2 அரசர் 22: 8-13, 23: 1-3; மத் 7: 15-20

கனிகளிலிருந்தே மரத்தை அடையாளம் காண முடியும்... இலையும் பூவும் காயும் கூட கனிகளே, நாம் காணும் மரத்தின் குணத்தை பொருத்து! மகிழம் மரத்தில் யாரும் மாம்பழம் தேடுவதில்லை. வேங்கை மரத்திடம் யாரும் மயக்கும் வாசம் கொண்ட மலர்கள் கேட்பதில்லை. நமது வாழ்வின் உண்மை பயனும், முழு பொருளும் நமக்கும் உலகிற்கும் விளங்க வேண்டும் என்றால் அது நமது சொல்லிலும், செயலிலும், நமது வாழ்வின் முறையிலும் வெளிப்படவேண்டும். அதற்கு நாம் முதலில் நமது மூலத்தையும், கருவையும், நமது உருவையும், பலத்தையும் உணர்ந்திருக்க வேண்டும்! ஆகையால் தான் கிறிஸ்து 'என்னை நீங்கள் நம்பாவிட்டாலும், என் செயல்களையாவது நம்புங்கள்' (யோ 10:38) என்றார். இது கிறிஸ்துவால் முடிந்தது ஏனெனில் அவர் தனது மூலக்கருவிலிருந்தே தனது வாழ்வை வாழ்ந்தார்! 

தனது மூலம், தனது மையம், தனது வாழ்வின் உட்கரு இவற்றை ஆழமாய் உணர்ந்திருந்தார் கிறிஸ்து. அந்த உள்ளார்ந்த நிலையில் தனக்கும் தன் தந்தைக்கும் இருந்த பிரிக்க முடியாத உறவை உணர்ந்தார், நம்பினார், அதையே தன் வாழ்வாக்கினார். அதனால் தான் அவரது வாழ்வே ஒரு மாபெரும் வெளிப்பாடாய், மகிமை நிறைந்த அனுபவமாய் மாறியது. 'நானும் என் தந்தையும் ஒன்றே' (யோ 10:30) என்று கூறுமளவுக்கு அவருக்கு துணிச்சல் இருந்தது.

இன்றைய முதல் வாசகம் அழகானதொரு அடையாள நிகழ்வை நமக்கு தருகிறது... கிறிஸ்துவை போன்றே நமது மூலக்கருவிலிருந்து வாழ்வதற்கான திறன் நமது உள்ளத்தின் ஆழத்தில் நமக்கு தரப்பட்டுள்ளது - நாம் இறைவனின் உருவிலும் சாயலிலும் படைக்கப்பட்டவர்கள் அல்லவா? ஆனால் அந்த ஆழத்திற்கு, அந்த மூலத்திற்கு நாம் சென்று அதை அகழ்வாராய்ந்து வெளிக்கொணர வேண்டும், உலகிற்கு வெளிப்படுத்திட வேண்டும், நமது வாழ்விற்கு வழிகாட்டியாக்கிட வேண்டும், அடுத்தவரின் வாழ்விற்கு விளக்காக்கிட வேண்டும். 

மூலக்கருவிலிருந்து நம் வாழ்வை வாழ்வது என்பது நமது உண்மையான மூலம், கரு , உரு, பலம் அறிந்து வாழ்வதாகும். நமது மூலம் இறைவன், நமது கரு இறைவார்த்தை, நமது உரு தூய ஆவி, நமது பலம் இறைவனோடு நமக்குள்ள உறவு... இவற்றை உணர்ந்து வாழ்ந்திட முற்படுவோம்!

ஜூன் 26: குறுகிய வாயில் ஆன்மிகம்

கண்டறிவோர் சிலர், தேர்ந்துகொள்வோர் வெகு சிலரே! 

2 அரசர் 19: 9-11,14-21,31-36; மத் 7: 6, 12-14

வாழ்வில் நெருக்கடி மிகுந்த சூழல்கள் வரும் போது, இதற்கு மேல் என்னால் சமாளிக்க முடியாது என்ற நிலை ஏற்படும் போது நாம் அனைவருமே கேள்வி: எங்கே அந்த கடவுள்? கடவுளே என்று ஒருவர் கதறுகிறார் என்றால் அவர் தன் ஆற்றலின் விளிம்புக்கு வந்துவிட்டார் என்று உலகம் அறிந்து கொள்கிறது... அல்லது, தனது ஆற்றலின்  விளிம்புக்கு வரும்போது தான் கடவுளை அணுக வேண்டும் என்று இந்த உலகம் கற்பிக்கின்றது. இன்று நாம் முதல் வாசகத்தில் காணும் நிலையும் அதுவே. அதுவரை இறைவாக்கினரும், இறைவாக்கும் பலமுறை அவர்களை தொடர்ந்து எச்சரித்திருந்தாலும், தங்கள் மனம் போன போக்கில் வாழ்ந்த மக்களுக்கு ஒரு பெரும் நெருக்கடி என்று வந்ததும், மக்களும், மக்கள் பிரதிநிதியாயிருந்த அரசனும் கடவுளிடம் கூக்குரலிடுகின்றனர். 

நம்மை பார்த்து இன்றைய வார்த்தை கேட்கும் கேள்வி இதுவே: வாழ்வில் நெருக்கடியோ, வேறு வழியறியாத நிலையோ, பெரும் பாரமோ வரும்போது தான் கடவுளை நினைக்கவோ, அழைக்கவோ, அவரை பற்றி சிந்திக்கவோ வேண்டும் என்று உங்களுக்கு கற்று தந்தது யார்? தொடக்கம் முதலே, சரியான, நிறைவான, முறையான, தெளிவான, கடவுளுக்கு உரிய, இறையரசுக்கு உகந்த தெரிவுகளையே நீங்கள் மேற்கொண்டால், நெருக்கடி வரும்போது அதை சந்திப்பதற்கும், இறைவனின் உடனிருப்பை ஆழ உணர்வதற்கும் ஏதுவாய் இருக்குமல்லவா?

சில வேளைகளில் நமது வாழ்வில் சிறு சிறு நிகழ்வுகளிலும் நிலைகளிலும் சில சமரசங்கள் தேவை படுகின்றன, அவற்றை நாம் செய்தே ஆக வேண்டும் என்று இன்றைய உலகம் நமக்கு அறிவுறுத்துகின்றது, நம்மை நம்பவும் வைத்திருக்கின்றது. இந்த சமரசங்களை நாம் உடன்படும் பபோது சில நெருக்கடிகள் உடனே விலகுகின்றன, மன நிம்மதி நமக்கு வந்து சேருகின்றது. அதனோடே வேறு பலவும் நமது வாழ்க்கையில் நுழைகின்றன, நமது வாழ்க்கையை வலுவற்றதாய், எதிர்ப்பாற்றல் அற்ற ஒன்றாய் நம்மை அறியாமலே மாற்றிவிடுகின்றன... நாம் எதிர்பாராத ஒரு தருணத்தில் நம்மை பெரும் நேரும் நெருக்கடி ஒன்றில் கொண்டு நிறுத்திவிடுகின்றன! அந்த நெருக்கடியிலிருந்து நாம் கூக்குரலிட்டு என்ன பயன்!

இதற்கு தீர்வு என்ன? குறுகிய வாயில் ஆன்மிகத்தை தேர்ந்துகொள்ளுங்கள் என்கிறது இன்றைய வார்த்தை. முடிவெடுக்க வேண்டிய எந்த ஒரு சூழலிலும், எது எளிதானது, எது வசதியானது, எது தொல்லையற்றது, எது அனைவரும் தேர்ந்துகொள்வது என்பது போன்ற எந்த கேள்வியும் எழுப்பாதீர்கள். நாம் எழுப்பவேண்டிய கேள்வி ஒன்று மட்டுமே: கடவுள் என்னிடமிருந்து எதிர்பார்க்கும் அந்த ஒரு முடிவு, அந்த ஒரு தேர்வு, அந்த  ஒரு செயல்பாடு எது? நான் நுழைய வேண்டிய அந்த ஒரே குறுகிய வாயில்... நான் என்னையே சற்று குறுக்கி நெளித்து நுழைய வேண்டிய அந்த ஒரே குறுகிய வாயில் எது? இதை கண்டறிபவர்களோ சிலர், கண்டறிந்தபின் அதை தேர்ந்துகொள்பவர்களோ வெகு சிலர்!

The Narrow Gate Spirituality

Tuesday, 12th week in Ordinary time

June 26: 2 Kgs 19: 9-11,14-21,31-36; Mt 7: 6, 12-14

At times when we have problems that overwhelm us, in front of which we have nothing that we can actually do, we are constricted to a choice which is not actually a choice at that point, but a point of no other choice! This is what we see in the first reading today. Hezekiah appeals to God and surrenders himself in the Temple when he has absolutely nothing else he can do, faced with a situation so grave. 

The Lord asks us, why do you wait till that crucial moment when there is no other go, when you are constricted to absolute straits, when you find yourself at a moment of no other choice? Right from the beginning why don't you make the absolute choices, choices that are fundamental, choices that involve absolutely no compromise, choices that take you nowhere else but towards that point that is right! In short, why don't you choose, right from the beginning, all your life, even at the most casual moments and not merely at crucial moments, just God and God alone!

The world would say, a bit of compromise is no issue! And that 'bit' is what will determine everything finally. Giving in that bit will enlarge the room gradually until the space make our life so comfortable and cozy, enjoyable and easy! But it will also let so many other things right into our lives, making it vulnerable and weak even without our notice! When crisis arises as a result of it, we might be caught unaware and cry inconsolably, finding fault with God and every thing that is godly in our life. 

The best solution: switch to the Narrow Gate Spirituality - don't ask yourself at any moment of choice which is easier, which is more convenient, which is more common, which is the way the whole world goes about. Ask just one question: what is that one thing that God want of me, just one thing, just one choice, just that narrow gate that exists through which you would have to squeeze yourself... only a few will find it and fewer will choose it.

ஜூன் 25: தீர்ப்பிடுதலும் தன்னுணர்வும்

தன்னுணர்வு நிறைந்த உண்மையின் மனநிலை

2 அரசர் 17: 5-8, 13-15, 18; மத் 7: 1-5

தீர்ப்பிடாதீர்கள் தீர்ப்புக்குள்ளாகமாட்டீர்கள். கிறிஸ்துவின் இன்றைய பாடம் இது. அடுத்தவரை தீர்ப்பிடாதிருத்தல் என்பதும் அவர்கள் செய்யும் அனைத்தையும் நியாயப்படுத்துதல் என்பதும் ஒன்றல்ல. இவ்விரண்டிற்கும் இடையே உள்ள வேறுபாட்டை உணர்தலே இறையரசிற்கு உகந்த மனநிலையாகும்- அதையே தன்னுணர்தல் நிறைந்த உண்மையின் மனநிலை என்போம். 

பல நேரங்களில் உண்மையை பேசுதல் என்ற பெயரில் அடுத்தவரை காயப்படுத்துவதும், தன்னிடம் உள்ள குறையை உணராது அடுத்தவரிடமே குறை காண விழைதலும், தன்னை பற்றி யாரும் குறைகூற முடியாத தற்புரிதலை வைத்துக்கொண்டு அனைவரையும் அலட்சியத்தோடு பார்த்தலும் பல விதமான பிரச்சனைகளுக்கும் குழப்பங்களுக்கும் அமைதியற்ற நிலைகளுக்கும் வழிவகுக்கிறது. இவற்றிலிருந்து நாம் விலகி நிற்கவேண்டுமென்றால் நமக்கு தேவையான மனநிலை: தன்னுணர்தல் நிறைந்த மனநிலை. 

அடுத்தவரில் நான் ஒரு குறை கண்டேன் என்றால் முதலில் நான் செய்ய வேண்டியது, அது அவர்களிடம் உள்ள குறையா, நான் காண்பதில் உள்ள குறையா என்று நடுநிலையோடு சிந்திப்பதே. அவர்களிடமே அந்த குறை இருந்தாலும், இந்த நடுநிலை பார்வை என்னிடம் உள்ள குறைகளை எனக்கு நினைவுபடுத்தி, குறையுள்ள அடுத்தவரிடம் உண்மையான இரக்கத்தோடும், மதிப்போடும் உறவுகொள்ளவும் உரையாடவும் எனக்கு கற்றுத் தரும். 

இரண்டாவதாக நான் செய்ய வேண்டியது, என் முற்றத்தை நான் தூய்மைப்படுத்துவது! பிறர் செய்வது போலவே நீங்களும் செய்யாதீர்கள் என்று நாடோடிகளாக இருந்த தன் மக்களுக்கு ஆண்டவர் அறிவுறுத்தினார். இதை தான் பவுலடிகளாரும் உரோமையருக்கு எழுதிய திருமுகத்தில், 'உலகத்தின் போக்கின் படி ஒழுகாதீர்கள்' என்று தெளிவுபடுத்துகிறார். எது சரி, எது இறைவனுக்கு உகந்தது என்பதை உணர்ந்து உண்மையான இரக்கத்தோடு அதை பற்றிக்கொண்டு உண்மையான அன்போடு இறைவழி நடக்க நாம் வழிகாண வேண்டும். 

சுருங்க கூறின், இன்றைய வார்த்தை நம்மை தன்னுணர்வு பெற அழைக்கின்றது, தெளிவுடன் நடைபோட பணிக்கின்றது. நமது ஆண்டவரின் அழைப்பிற்கு செவிமடுப்போம், தன்னுணர்வு நிறைந்த உண்மையின் மக்களாய் வாழ முயற்சிப்போம், முடிவெடுப்போம். இறைவார்த்தையே நம் பாதைக்கு விளக்காகட்டும். 

A Self-critical Conscious Choice

Monday, 12th week in Ordinary time

June 25, 2018: 2 Kgs 17: 5-8, 13-15, 18; Mt 7: 1-5

Judge not, and you shall not be judged, instructs Jesus today. Not to judge others does not mean justifying whatever he or she does. Between judging the other and justifying the other there is an attitude that Jesus deems Reign-worthy and it is a Self-critical Conscious Choice.

The first need is to be self critical. When I find something wrong in the other, charity requires that I first become critical of myself... it is seeing the log that is in your eye before offering to remove the splinter from your neighbour's. Once I am aware that I too possess the same, or a similar, or a bigger weakness, my attitude changes completely. I am in a  position to act with prudence and humility.

The second need is to set the home tidy first. "Do not do like they do" ... that was the instruction that the Lord had given the people when they come into contact with other people in their wanderings. St. Paul too has a similar warning for us, isn't it? Writing to the Romans, he tells us: do not be conformed to the world, instead be transformed in the Lord (cf. Rom 12).

In short, the Word invites us today to live our daily lives conscious of who we are, what we are called for and where we are bound to! Let us take our faith seriously and live on a daily basis by sound self-critical conscious choices... the Word shall be the lamp to that path!

Life - a Miracle and a Mystery

The Nativity of St. John the Baptist

Sunday, June 24, 2018: Is 49:1-6; Acts 13:22-26; Lk1: 57-66, 80

I always insist, there are no coincidences. There are only miracles! One constant and incomparable miracle in human life is birth! Just imagine, before you were born your father, mother, home, family, everything was determined and prepared for.  All that you had to do was be there and insert yourself into that reality. Everybody would be wondering what would become of you, but God had definitive plans. If only you cooperated with those plans, you would achieve the purpose of your life... which is not merely a pretty long life for its own sake. 

Many have gone rather early but that "early" is highly relative to the purposes achieved by those persons: for St. Francis it was 45 years, for St. Anthony it  was 36 and for St.  Dominic Savio it was just 14 plus! The Miracle is how things happen in such succession and correspondence that you can hardly account for. When we are mindful of a divine hand guiding us, we would find a great peace and serenity even amidst raging troubles and persistent problems. 

The readings today summarise in a perfect sense who John was - the Voice, the Servant and the Blessed of all born of women. The first reading describes his identity, the second his self-understanding and the Gospel, his blessedness in the eyes of God.

The Voice: his identity. 

He stands out as a prophet, a prophet who ensures the continuity between the Old Testaments prophets and Jesus, the prophet par excellence. His identity as a voice explains also his priority to make God's Word known. The Word is announced by the Voice: the call for us... to make present to the Word in the world.

The Servant of God: his  self-identity.

John was filled with a sense of his mission. He was sent to prepare the way of the Lord, as a precursor to run before the Lord and get the spirit of the Lord's people up and awake. He challenged people to conversion as a foretaste of the Reign of God that Jesus wanted to establish. The challenge for us, is to recognise God's will at work in our lives

Blessed from the Womb: God's chosen one.

John becomes a proximate witness to us for the words that Isaiah, Jeremiah and other prophets always insist upon: the Lord chooses us before we were ever formed in the womb and the Lord has a specific plan for each of us. In God's wisdom lies our true happiness. The invitation for us, is to understand the purpose of our lives from the perspective of God.

John's birth today is painted in a manner that vividly brings out the miracle that every person is and every life is. What is important here is to be mindful of the call and be open to its ways. Learn to look at yourself with a sense of mystery. Open the eyes of your soul to see the mystery in others. Keep your faith alive to realise and experience the Mystery present always with you - the Lord who is leading you by your hand!

To whom is my allegiance?

Saturday, 11th week in Ordinary time

June 23, 2018 - 2 Chr 24: 17-25; Mt 6: 24-34

Infidelity, compromises, transgressions, forsaking and tryst with the unholy...these were characteristic traits of the so-called 'chosen people', the people with whom the Lord made the covenant: I will be your God and you shall be my people. However unfaithful and treacherous they got, the Lord ever remained faithful and true to the covenant that was made. Coming across passages such as we find in today's first reading, we are prone to judge the people of Israel, but let us wait!

Looking at our own life, the Lord has chosen us before the foundations of the world (Eph 1:4) and has made a covenant with us right at our baptism: you shall be my child and I shall be your God. And ever since, how many compromises and transgressions, how many moments of failures and negligences... the Lord however has always been faithful (cf.2 Tim 2:13). 

In the light of today's readings let us raise a fundamental question to ourselves: To whom is my allegiance in my daily concrete living? And how absolute is that allegiance? Integrity demands that only each of us can be our own judge. Analysing each and every little choice that we make and the priorities we act on will give us a fair picture of our level of fidelity to the One who has called us. 

ஜூன் 23: நான் யார் பக்கம்?

சுற்றியுள்ள உலகமா? சுட்டிக்காட்டும் உண்மையா?

2 குறிப்பேடு 24: 17-25; மத் 6: 24-34

புறக்கணிப்பு, பாவம், மாற்றுக்கடவுள்களை நாடி செல்லுதல், ஏமாற்றம், புனிதமற்ற வாழ்க்கை, உண்மையான பக்தியற்ற வழிபாடுகள், இறைவனுக்கு செவிகொடாத பிடிவாதம் என இறைவனின் "தேர்ந்துகொள்ளப்பட்ட மக்கள்" அவருக்கு தந்த பதில் பெரும்பாலும் ஏமாற்றம் தரக்கூடியதாகவே இருந்தது. நான் உங்கள் கடவுளாய் இருப்பேன், நீங்கள் என் மக்களாய் இருப்பீர்கள் என்று கடவுள் அவர்களோடு மேற்கொண்ட உடன்படிக்கையை மக்கள் ஒவ்வொரு முறையும் உடைத்தார்கள் எனினும், கடவுள் அவர்கள் மீது வைத்திருந்த அன்பு குறையவே இல்லை, அவரது உடன்படிக்கையை குறித்த நம்பகத்தன்மை எந்த நிலையிலும் மாறவும் இல்லை. இன்றைய முதல் வாசகத்தில் வரும் நிகழ்வை போன்று எத்தனையோ நிகழ்வுகளை காணும்போதெல்லாம், இந்த இஸ்ராயேல் மக்கள் ஏன் இப்படி செய்கிரார்கள் என்று அவர்களை நொந்துக்கொள்ள தோன்றும்... ஆனால் ஒரு வினாடி பொறுங்கள்...

நமது வாழ்க்கையை எண்ணி பார்ப்போமே... இந்த உலகம் தோன்றுவதற்கு முன்பே முன்குறித்து நம்மை தேர்ந்துகொண்டார் இறைவன் (எபே 1:4). நமது திருமுழுக்கின் போது நம்மோடு ஒரு உடன்படிக்கையை மேற்கொண்டுள்ளார்: நீங்கள் என் பிள்ளைகளாய் இருப்பீர்கள், நான் உங்கள் கடவுளாய் இருப்பேன். நமது திருமுழுக்கு முதல், நாம் அவருக்கு முழுமையாக உண்மையுள்ளவர்களாய் வாழ்ந்திருக்கிறோமா? எத்தனை வகையான பாவங்கள், எத்தனை முறை அவருக்கு எதிரானவற்றை தேர்ந்துகொள்ளும் போக்குகள், சாதி, குலம், வர்கம் என்று பிரிவு மனப்பான்மைகளோடு உண்மையாகவே ஒரே இறைவனின் பிள்ளைகள் என்ற மனநிலை அற்றுப்போய் வாழும் நிலை - இவை எல்லாம் இறைவனின் மக்களுக்கு அழகா?

இன்றைய இறைவார்த்தையின் வெளிச்சத்திலே நம் வாழ்வை சற்று சீர்தூக்கி பாப்போம்... நான் யார் பக்கம்? ஊரோடு ஒத்துப்போகும் மனநிலையோடு இந்த உலகத்தின் பக்கமா? உண்மை மட்டுமே என்னை விடுதலையாக்கும் என்று எனக்கு சுட்டிக்காட்டும் ஒரே தாயும் தந்தையுமான கடவுளின் பக்கமா? நான் யார் பக்கம்?

True Greatness in Utter Simplicity

Thursday, 11th week in Ordinary Time

June 21, 2018: Sir 48: 1-14; Mt 6: 7-15

Elijah is singled out in the book of Sirach, among the 27 great persons of God praised for their life and accomplishments. Elijah wins that place in his simplicity, in the simplicity with which he trusted in the Lord, the simplicity with which he carried out every single command or wish  of the Lord, that simplicity with which he endured his hardships, knowing certainly that the Lord is in control of everything. That was his true greatness.

It is said Elijah was taken up in the whirlwind of fire...he could not die! His life was so simple that he could have died. This is what Jesus says, when you truly believe in Christ, you would not die, you would have eternal life, the endless life that belongs to God alone! It is all in the simplicity with which you live, believe and behold God.

This is the very same simplicity that Jesus lived and taught us...the Our Father is an epitome of simplicity prescribed to us not only as a prayer, but as a way of life, as a Spirituality that comes very close to the mind of Christ. How simple are our prayers? How simple is our faithful trust in the Lord? How simple is our relationship with God on a daily basis...that would be our way to true greatness!
