TO BE PEOPLE OF THE LIGHT

The Feast of Epiphany : 6th January,  2018

Is 60: 1-6; Eph 3:2-3,5-6,  5-6; Mt 2: 1-12

The Light came to the earth; the Lord came unto His own but His own received him not! We are people of the Light and that is the feast we celebrate today! The feast which reminds us that we are the people of the Revelation. God has revealed Godself to us and awaits our response.

I still remember an experience that I had almost a decade back. Two of us were sent to pick up a priest from the railway station. This is no strange experience! How many times we would have received people in the airports and railway stations! But the twitch here was. ..we did not know the person we are going to pick up. All that we know was that we are going to pick up a middle aged priest from Mumbai who was coming to Chennai. We positioned ourselves in a prominent spot and awaited the guest as the crowd started spilling into the platform from the train. Crowds and crowds of people were passing by but we did not spot our guest. Many who were standing alongside with us waiting for their guests were gone. There was one standing beside me for quite sometime. A man with a dhoti and a white shirt with a long grey beard! He didn't even seem to be looking out for someone. The best surprise was when he asked us. ..'so are you waiting for someone from Mumbai?' We said in unison,  'yes'! And when he said. .."I am the one", we didn't know really how to react!

At times, the Lord reveals Godself but we have certain preconceived ideas that don't allow us to see the Lord. Today we are invited to be people of the light.,  that is people who live in light always,  people who are ready and prepared to receive the revelations that God wishes to give us.

The Lord reveals himself to us constantly. ..first of all through extraordinary means: let's pray that God gives that gift to many of us!  But there is another way God reveals,  the ordinary means: through prayer experiences,  spiritual direction,  liturgical celebrations, etc. Let's take care when we celebrate these moments in life so that we don't miss the revelations involved.

There is the third way which is more subtle and more challenging: the Daily means.  The fact is that the Lord constantly reveals himself through every day experiences...through people we encounter, through challenging situations we face,  through successful experiments we have, through people who come to us in need,  through persons who demand our responsibility and so on. Let's open our eyes, our ears,  our hearts. ..that we may receive the Light that encounters us daily in our life.

It takes a challenging faith to remain the people of light!

சனவரி 5: உள்ளார்ந்த வாழ்வே கடவுளில் வாழ்வு

கடவுளில் வாழ்தல் என்பது ...

கடவுளில் வாழ்தல் என்பது வெறும் சொல்லிலும் செயலிலும் வாழ்வதல்ல . அது மனச்சான்றிற்கு உரிய உள்ளார்ந்த வாழ்வாகும். அனைத்தையும் கடந்து உள் நோக்கக்கூடிய 'கட வுள் ' மட்டுமே அறியக்கூடிய வாழ்வு அது. ஆகையால் தான் எல்லா சாட்சியங்களையும் விட மேலானதொரு சாட்சியம் மனச்சான்றின் சாட்சியமாகும்.

வந்து பாருங்கள் என்று கிறிஸ்து கூறினார், அதையே தன்  சீடர்களுக்கு சவாலாகவும் தந்தார். அதை ஏற்றுக்கொண்டு அவர்களும், நேற்று அந்திரேயாவும் இன்று பிலிப்பும் துணிச்சலோடு வந்து பாரும் என்று அடுத்தவருக்கு அழைப்பு விடுகின்றனர். நமது உள்ளார்ந்த வாழ்வை இவ்வுலகம் காணும்படி  வாழ நாம் அழைக்கப்படுகிறோம்.

துணிச்சலோடு இவ்வழைப்பை ஏற்றுக்கொண்டு, அடுத்தவரின் பாராட்டுக்காகவோ அவர்களின் நன்மதிப்புக்காகவோ அல்லது அவர்களது எதிர்ப்புக்கு பயந்தோ அல்லது வேறு விளைவுகளுக்கு அஞ்சியோ அல்ல உள்ளார்ந்த வாழ்வுக்கு உண்மையுள்ளவர்களாய் கடவுளின் எண்ணத்திற்கு மட்டுமே கட்டுப்பட்டவர்களாய் வாழ முற்படுவோம்.

உள்ளார்ந்த வாழ்வே கடவுளில் வாழ்தல் என்பதை உலகறிய எடுத்துரைப்போம்.

THE INTERIOR CASTLE

WORD 2day: 5th January, 2018

1 Jn 3:11-21; Jn 1:43-51

Reflecting on the Word today, I was instantly reminded of the famous title written by St. Teresa of Avila - the Interior Castle. And I was also smiling to myself thinking of a spiritual friend of mine once asking me, "which mansion have you entered now?", referring to the interior spiritual progress as presented by the holy Carmelite nun. It is not about showing where we have reached and proving what we have achieved!

Our life of faith actually is a life lived at the interior castle of our beings! That is why we are required to invite people to 'come and see', as does Philip today. This is in continuation with the reflection we had yesterday, where Jesus invited the disciples to 'come and see' and challenged them to invited others! Andrew yesterday and Philip today took up that challenge and invited others! 

If we have to share our spiritual experience with others, it is not with words and proofs! Words and deeds speak much less than what our personal interior lives can speak. What we are called to dare is, to invite others to come and see our life, our innermost life. When our interior life is orderly, when our conscience is at peace, when our inner sanctuary is maintained with holiness and purity, our entire life can become a testimony to others: we can without fear say, "Come and See" my interior castle! 

The Interior Castle is where my Lord lives, let the whole world see the Lord dwelling there! 

சனவரி 4: வந்தனர், கண்டனர், தங்கினர்...

 அவரிடம் வந்தவர்கள் கண்டனர் தங்கினர்...

யார் இவர்? இவரை குறித்து ஏன் நமது குருவான யோவான் பேச வேண்டும்? இவரிடம் அப்படி என்ன சிறப்பாக உள்ளது? என்ன தான் செய்து வருகிறார்? இன்னும் பலப்பல கேள்விகள் அந்த சீடர்களின் மனதில் தொக்கி நின்றன. எல்லா வினாக்களுக்கும் ஒரே பதிலில் தெளிவளித்தார் இயேசு: வந்து பாருங்கள். 

தன் தனிப்பட்ட வாழ்வை எந்த ஒரு தயக்கமும் இன்றி திறந்த புத்தகமாக வாழ துணிந்தார் கிறிஸ்து. இன்று என்னால் அப்படி பட்ட வாழ்வை வாழ முடியுமா: நீங்கள் யாராக இருந்தாலும் சரி... நான் யாரென்று வந்து பாருங்கள் என்று துணிவோடு என்னால் அழைப்பு விடுக்க முடியுமா? முன்னால் பேசுவது ஒன்று, பின்னால் முனகுவது வேறொன்று; பொதுவில் வாழும் வாழ்க்கை ஒன்று, தனிப்பட்ட உலகம் வேறொன்று; வெளிப்படையாக பேசும் விழுமியங்கள் ஒன்று, உள்ளத்தில் ஊறியுள்ள மதிப்பீடுகள் வேறு என்று நான் வாழ்ந்து கொண்டிருந்தால், துணிவோடு, வந்து பாருங்கள் என்று என்னால் எப்படி சொல்ல இயலும்?

உள்ளும் புறமும், முன்னும் பின்னும், பொதுவிலும் தனிமையிலும், ஒரே வாழ்வியல் விழுமியங்களை கொண்டிருந்தால் கிறிஸ்துவை போலவே நானும் வந்து பாருங்கள் என்று எளிதில் கூற இயலும். அவர் அழைத்தார், வந்தனர், கண்டனர், அவரோடு தங்கினர். இன்று நான் அழைத்தால், வந்து கண்டு கிறிஸ்துவோடு தங்க தயாராய் இருப்பார்களா?

They came, they saw and they stayed!

WORD 2day: 4th January, 2018

1 Jn 3: 7-10; Jn 1: 35-42

Who is this? Where does he live? Why does our Master point to him as the 'One who is to come'? What is special about him? What has he to offer? - these were the scores of questions that were crisscrossing the minds of those two disciples. But Jesus answered them all with just one response: Come and See! Jesus just let them into his life, and allowed them to see who he was!

Will I be ready to let people into my life and see for themselves who I am? Will my daily life, my words and my thoughts, my choices and my values, manifest to even a casual onlooker, who I am? I have always been tickled by that question that one of our professors was used to ask us: if they arrested you for being a Christian, would they find enough reasons to prosecute you?

This is what John explains in his epistle too. Our life has to tell the world who we are: whether we are children of God or followers of the Enemy. If my life is filled with wrong choices and misfired priorities, will I be communicating Christ to the world? As the Church has been so vociferously teaching at least for the past half a century, the primary mode of evangelisation ought to be our personal lives. 

When those disciples were invited, they came, they saw and they stayed with Jesus! If someone comes, sees my life, will he or she today stay with Jesus?

சனவரி 3: அவரைப்போலவே

அவரைப்போலவே இருத்தல் என்பது...

அவரது தன்மையை கொண்டிருத்தல் - எதையும் எதிர்பாராது அன்பு செய்தல், குறைகளை தாண்டி குற்றங்களை மன்னித்தல், வேறுபாடுகள் பாராட்டாது ஏற்றுக்கொள்ளுதல், எந்த தயக்கமுமின்றி தாராளமாய் இருத்தல்... இவையே இறைத்தன்மையை கொண்டிருத்தல் என்று பொருள் படும். 

அவரது செயற்பாட்டினை கொண்டிருத்தல் 
அவரை போலவே சிந்திக்கும் மனம், அவரது வார்த்தைகளையே பேசும் குணம், அவரது செயல்களையே செய்யும் எண்ணம், சுருங்கக்கூறின், சிந்தனை சொல் செயல் அனைத்திலும் அவரை விட்டகலாமல் வாழும் வாழ்வு என்று பொருள் படும்.

அவரது மகனாய் மகளாய் வாழ்தல் 
தன் வாழ்விலே இதை வாழ்ந்து காட்டி நமக்கு வெறும் ஆசானாய் அல்ல முன்னோடியாய் முதற்பிள்ளையாய் மூத்த சகோதரனாய் விளங்கும் கிறிஸ்துவின் வழித்தோன்றல்கள் நாம் என்று சொல்லிக்கொள்ள நமக்கு தகுதி உள்ளதா என்று நம்மையே வினவ வேண்டியுள்ளது. 

இறைவன் அவருக்கு அருளிய எப்பெயருக்கும் மேலான பெயரை நம்மோடு பகிர்ந்து கொண்டுள்ள இறைமகனின் வழிநிற்கும் அழைப்பு பெற்றவர்கள் நாம். கிறிஸ்தவர்கள் என்று உண்மையிலேயே அடையாளப்படுத்தப்பட வேண்டுமானால் அவரைப்போலவே வாழ வேண்டிய சவால் நமக்கு உண்டு. அதை ஏற்றுள்ளோமா? உணர்ந்துள்ளோமா?

RESEMBLING GOD

WORD 2day: 3rd January, 2018

1 Jn 2:29 - 3:6; Jn 1: 29-34

The Holy Spirit,  in the form of the dove testified on behalf of Jesus that he was the Son of God. We are made the children of God and the same Spirit testifies for us too. We would be identified as children of God if and only if we resemble God our Father and Mother. That is what John says in his epistle today: we resemble God and that is what we are expected to be in this world.

Resembling God in our being: would mean being loving beyond all expectations, being forgiving beyond all grievances, being welcoming beyond all petty differences and being generous, beyond all calculations.

Resembling God in our doing: wound mean having thoughts that God would have, saying words that God would give, doing things that God would rather do, in short, remaining with the lord- in every thought,  word and deed.

Resembling God made easy: Christ had come to live amidst us to show us how we could resemble God in our lives. It is something that he did not just speak of but showed us in his person and life. Out choices and our values should begin to resemble those of Christ. It is a life long journey that our call as Christians proposes to us. Let us embark on that journey as firmly as possible.

Jesus has shared with us that name above all name that he was given by God - if we have to be worthy of that Holy name of His, let us resemble him. Let us resemble God!

சனவரி 2: உண்மை கிறிஸ்துவை கண்டுகொள்வோம்

கிறிஸ்து மனிதனா? கடவுளா?

இயேசு உண்மையில் மனிதரா கடவுளா என்ற வாக்குவாதம் தொடக்க கால திருச்சபையிலே பெரும் சர்ச்சையாய்  இருந்தது. அதற்கு  தெள்ளத்தெளிவான  ஒரு சான்று இன்றைய முதல் வாசகம். இயேசு மனித உருவம் மட்டுமே கொண்ட கடவுளின் மகன் என்று ஒரு தரப்பினரும், அவர் மனிதனாய் இருந்து பின்னர் கடவுளால் உயர்த்தப்பட்டவர் என்று ஒரு தரப்பினரும் வாதிட்டனர். ஆனால் திருச்சபை கிறிஸ்துவின் மனிதத்தையும் அவரது கடவுள் தன்மையையும் பிரித்து பார்த்தால் இயலாது என்பதை தொடக்கம் முதலே ஆழமாய் கற்பித்து வந்துள்ளது.

அவரது மனித தன்மையில் கடவுளின் மகனை காண இயலாதவர்கள், மனிதனில் உறையும் இறைவனை காண இயலாது என்ற உண்மை இன்றும் எதார்த்தமே. மனிதனாம்  கிறிஸ்துவில் கடவுளின் மகனையும்,  கடவுளில் மனிதனையும் முதலில் முழுமையாய் கண்டுகொண்டு அதை உலகிற்கு அறிவித்தவர் என்ற பெருமை திருமுழுக்கு யோவானையே சாரும்.

இன்று நமக்கு விடுக்கபடும் அழைப்பும் இதுவே: துன்பங்களில் துவண்டுகிடக்கும் மனிதர்களில், சமுதாயத்தால் புறக்கணிக்கப்படும் சகோதரர்களில் , ஏழ்மையாலும் சுயநல ஏய்ப்பாலும் வாவிழந்த உள்ளங்களில் உண்மை கடவுளின் உருவை காண முயலுவோம், இதோ கிறிஸ்து என்று பறைசாற்ற துணிவோம்.

ENCOUNTERING CHRIST TODAY

WORD 2day: 2nd January, 2018

1 Jn 2:22-28; Jn 1: 19-28

The identity of Jesus as both God and Human was a major node of controversies in the early Church. The first reading we have today is an indication to such feuds that existed. What matters, as John so rightly points out there, is not the philosophical and theological justification of who Jesus is,  but the personal experience of the person of Christ.

John the Baptist foretold the coming of Christ and pointed out when Christ really came. His prophetic gift have him the privilege of understanding Jesus and identifying Jesus when he came. Today we would do well to pray for this grace... To identify Jesus when he comes so that the encounter may enrich our life and bring meaning to it. 

In varied ways, in our neighbours, in our brothers and sisters, very specially in those who are in dire need and helplessness,  we are challenged to encounter Christ who is God, but deigned to assume our nature and live in the poor and the oppressed! 

How provident it is that Pope Francis has given a four point programme this year to care for the strangers, the migrants, the refugees, those who are at a loss in the lives. He calls us to Welcome them, Protect them, Promote their wellbeing and Integrate them into the mainstream life of the society! May Christ our Lord give us a love that sees beyond dichotomies and divisions towards an authentic celebration of difference!

சனவரி 1: மரியன்னை இறைவனின் தாய் பெருவிழா

மரியன்னையின் இறைத்தாய்மை என்பது நமக்கு ...

ஒரு கொடை ... 

காலம் நிறைவேறிய போது ஒரு பெண்ணின் வயிற்றில் பிறந்தவராய் நமது மீட்பர் வந்தார் என்பது இறைவார்த்தை. நம் மீட்பை நமக்கு தர இறைவனின் முதல் தயாரிப்பே  இவ்வன்னை.

ஒரு நினைவுறுத்தல்...

அன்று மீட்பரை மண்ணிற்கு ஈன்ற அவளது தாய்மையை எண்ணி வாயால் போற்றுபவர்களாய் மட்டுமே நாம் இருந்துவிடலாகாது. அவளை போன்றே நம் சிந்தையிலும் சொல்லிலும் செயற்களிலும் இறைவார்த்தையை கருத்தாங்கி இம்மண்ணிற்கு ஈன்றளிக்க நாம் அழைக்க பட்டிருக்கிறோம் என்பதன் நினைவூட்டல் இவ்வன்னை.

ஒரு சவால்...

தன்னையே அளித்தாள், தன் வாழ்வை அளித்தாள், தன் ஒரே மகனை அளித்தாள், தன் கனவுகள் ஆசைகள் ஏக்கங்கள் என அனைத்தையும் அளித்தாள். தான் அளிப்பது இன்னது என்று எண்ணாமலே கூட அளித்தாள். நாம் நம்மிடம் உள்ளதை அளிக்கவே இத்தனை சிந்திக்கும் போது நம்மையே அளிக்க எத்துணை சிந்திப்போம் என்று நம்மையே வினவ வைக்கும் அன்னை இவள். அவளது தன்னளிப்பு நமக்கு மாபெரும் சவாலே.
