UNITY OCTAVE 2018 - DAY 2

No longer as a slave, but a beloved brother

Readings:

Happening Today: Human trafficking is a form of modern-day slavery in which victims are forced or tricked into sex work, child labour and the harvesting of organs for the profit of the exploiters. It is a global, multimillion-dollar industry. Churches in various regions have formed networks against this trafficking but there should be more concerted effort at the local levels, where we need to get into solidarity with the humanity that is being deprived of its true dignity.

Reflection: 

One of the first things we learn about God in the Hebrew and Christian Bible is that God created humankind in his own image. However, this profound and beautiful truth has often been obscured or denied throughout human history. For instance, in the Roman Empire, the dignity of those enslaved was denied. The Gospel message is entirely different to this. Jesus challenged the social norms that devalued the human dignity of Samaritans, describing the Samaritan as the ‘neighbour’ of the man who had been attacked on the road to Jericho – a neighbour to be loved, according to the Law.  And Paul, made bold in Christ, describes the once-enslaved Onesimus as ‘a beloved brother’, transgressing the norms of his society and affirming Onesimus’s humanity.

Christian love must always be a courageous love that dares to cross borders, recognising in others a dignity equal to our own. Like St Paul, Christians must be ‘bold enough in Christ’ to raise a united voice in clearly recognising trafficked persons as their neighbours and their beloved brothers and sisters, and so work together to end modern-day slavery.

Prayer: 
Gracious God,
draw near to those who are victims of human trafficking,
assuring them that you see their plight and hear their cry.
May your Church be united in compassion and courage to work for that day
when no one will be exploited
and all will be free to live lives of dignity and peace.
This we pray in the name of the Triune God
who can do immeasurably more than we can ask or imagine.
Amen.

UNITY OCTAVE 2018 - DAY 1

18th January, 2018

You shall also love the stranger, 

for you were strangers in the land of Egypt

Matthew 25:31-46    I was a stranger and you welcomed me

Happening Today: After becoming the first independent black republic, Haiti extended hospitality to other enslaved peoples in search of freedom. Recent times have brought severe economic hardship to Haitians, many of whom have left home, making perilous journeys in hope of a better life. In many instances they have been met with inhospitality and legal barriers. The Caribbean Council of Churches has been involved in advocacy to challenge those nations that are restricting or stripping Haitians of citizenship rights.

Reflection

The Israelites’ memory of being strangers in the land of Egypt lay behind the Law’s instruction that God’s people were to welcome the stranger in their midst. The memory of their own exile was expected to prompt empathy and solidarity with contemporary exiles and strangers. Like Israel, our common Christian experience of God’s saving action goes together with remembering both alienation and estrangement - in the sense of estrangement from God and from his kingdom. This kind of Christian remembering has ethical implications. God has restored our dignity in Christ, and made us citizens of his kingdom, not because of anything we did to deserve it but by his own free gift in love. We are called to do likewise, freely and motivated by love. Christian love is to love like the Father, that is to recognize dignity and to give dignity, and thereby to help bring healing to the broken human family.

Prayer
Eternal God,
You belong to no culture and land but are Lord of all,
you call us to welcome the stranger in our midst.
Help us by your Spirit,
to live as brothers and sisters,
welcoming all in your name,
and living in the justice of your kingdom.
This we pray in Jesus’ name, Amen.
The right hand of God
is planting in our land,
planting seeds of freedom, hope and love;
in these many-peopled lands,
let his children all join hands,
and be one with the right hand of God.

சனவரி 18: எல்லா புகழும் இறைவன் ஒருவருக்கே!

போற்றுவாரும்  தூற்றுவாரும் நிறைந்ததே உலகு 

நமது மனத்திற்குள் அழிவின் எண்ணங்களை புகுத்துவது நம் எதிரியாம் தீயோனுக்கு அவ்வளவு கடினமான காரியமல்ல. நம்மையே அறியாமல் இவ்வெண்ணங்களை புகுத்துவதிலே அவன் வல்லவன். அதை செய்ய அவனுக்கு உதவும் மாபெரும் கருவி - நான் என்ற அகந்தை. இந்த அழிவின் தொடக்கத்தில் தான் சவுலை இன்று நாம் சந்திக்கின்றோம். அதுவரை இறைவனால் தேர்ந்துகொள்ளப்பட்டவனாய் இஸ்ரயேல் மக்களிடையே பெரும் வரவேற்பு பெற்றவனாய் இருந்த சவுல் தனது அழிவை நோக்கி இன்று முதலடி வைக்கிறார் - பொறாமையின் வழியாக. தன்னை விட தாவீதை அதிகமாக புகழ்ந்துவிட்டார்கள் என்ற உண்மை அவரது கண்களை மறைத்து, தான் பெற்ற ஆசீர்வாதங்களையெல்லாம் இழக்க செய்கிறது. 

கடவுளிலேயே நான் என் நம்பிக்கையை வைத்துள்ளேன் என்று வாயளவிலே கூறினால் மட்டும் போதாது. அதை வாழ்வாக்க நாம் அன்றாடம் என்ன செய்கின்றோம் என்று சிந்தித்து பார்க்கவேண்டியுள்ளது. பிறரின் பாராட்டும் அவர்களின் விமர்சனமும் எந்த அளவுக்கு நம்மை அடிமைகளாக்கி வைத்துள்ளன என்று உணர்ந்துகொள்ளுதல் நலம். புகழிலே மூழ்கிப்போவதும், விமர்சனங்களில் நொடிந்து போவதும் இயற்கையான எதிரிலிகள் என்றாலும், இறைவனின் சித்தத்தை மட்டுமே மனதில் கொண்டு செயல்படும் ஒருவருக்கு இவைகளை அப்பாற்பட்டு சிந்திக்க முடியும். 

போற்றுவோரும் தூற்றுவோரும் அல்ல, என்னை படைத்து அழைத்திருக்கிற இறைவனே என் ஆதாரம். அவரின் சித்தப்படி என் வாழ்வை வாழ எனக்கு தெரியுமென வாழும் ஒவ்வொருவரும் உண்மையில் கிறிஸ்துவின் சீடர்களே! எல்லா புகழும் இறைவன் ஒருவருக்கே!

HUMAN APPROVAL OR GOD'S WILL

WORD 2day: 18th January, 2018 

Thursday, 2nd week in Ordinary Time

1 Sam 18:6-9, 19:1-7; Mk 3: 7-12

The evil one makes its entry into our lives in subtle ways! One of the easiest entry points is our ego; and that is what happens to Saul today in the first reading. This was the beginning of his end. Looking for the approval of those around makes us slaves to others! It is not enough to write on our logos and our mottos, In God we Trust, as we pray in the responsorial today... we need to learn to do it - truly allowing God to run our lives! 

Human approval is the first enemy to doing God's holy will. Jesus knew this so well and that is why when people were in awe, admiring his healing and miracles, he withdrew to the mountains to unite with God. When the evil spirits try the same trick, affirming him that he was the Son of God, Jesus does nothing but command them to silence. 

Jesus teaches us today, to be alert regarding the evil spirits and their tactics! As St. Peter instructs us in his letter, "Be calm, but vigilant; your enemy, the devil is prowling round like a roaring lion, looking for someone to eat!" (1 Pet 5:8). The entry is slow and subtle...at every point of time, everything will look reasonable, and that is the way we are deceived to giving in. 

Let us live every day of our life, as mere instruments of God and we will see the serenity and peace that we will enjoy. To God alone be praise, honour and adoration!

சனவரி 17: இறைவனை தேர்ந்துகொள் நிறைவினை தெரிந்துகொள்

தூய வனத்து அந்தோனியார் - நினைவு நாள் 

உலகின் எல்லா சமயங்களிலும் ஒரு சிந்தனை ஓத்திருக்குமேயானால் அது இதுவே: நன்மைக்கும் தீமைக்கும் இடையே ஒரு போர் நடந்தவண்ணமே உள்ளது. இதில் நன்மை வெல்லுமா தீமை வெல்லுமா என்பது ஒரு முக்கியமான கேள்வியே என்றாலும், நான் எதை தேர்ந்துகொள்கின்றேன் என்பது அனைத்தையும் விட முக்கியமான கேள்வியாகும். நம்பிக்கையின் பார்வையில் காணும்போது என் வாழ்வில் ஒவ்வொவரு தருணமும் இரு வேறு தேர்வுகள் என் கண் முன் நின்றுகொண்டே இருக்கின்றன: கடவுளுக்கு உரியதா? கடவுளுக்கு எதிரானதா?

என் சொல் செயல் சிந்தனை இவற்றில் ஏதிலானாலும் சரி, நான் எதை தேர்ந்துகொள்ளுகின்றேனோ அதுவாகவே மாறுகின்றேன். கடவுளுக்கு உரியதை தேர்ந்து கொண்டால்  கடவுளுக்கு உரியவனாகவும், கடவுளுக்கு எதிரானதை தெரிந்துகொண்டால் கடவுளுக்கு எதிரானவனாகவும் என்னையே நான் உருவாக்கிக்கொள்கிறேன். 

நீ வாளோடும் எரிகம்போடும் வருகிறாய் நானோ என் ஆண்டவராம் கடவுளின் பெயரால் வருகிறேன் என்று முரசறைந்து மாவலிமை வாய்ந்த பிலிஸ்தியரின் போர்வீரணை எதிர்கொள்ளும் சிறுவன் தாவீதை பாருங்கள். எங்கிருந்து வந்தது அந்த துணிச்சல் - நான் கடவுளை மட்டுமே நம்பி உள்ளேன் என்ற ஒருமணப்பட்ட நிலையினின்று வருகிறது.

சின்னஞ்சிறு கற்களை தேர்ந்துகொள்ளும் தாவிதாட்டும்,  கை சூம்பியவர், பாவிகள் என சின்னஞ்சிறியோரை தேர்ந்துகொள்ளும் கிறிஸ்துவாகட்டும்...அவர்களது தேர்வு ஒன்றேயொன்றாக இருந்தது - அதுவே கடவுளுக்கு உரியது! 

இன்று நாம் சிறப்பிக்கும் புனிதரின் வாழ்விலும், உண்மையிலேயே இறைவனை தேர்ந்துகொண்ட தருணங்கள் அதிகமாயிருந்தது. தனக்குள்ள பெரும் சொத்தை தனக்கென விட்டு தனது பெற்றோர் இறந்தபோது, தான் என்பது அகந்தை என்றும் தனது என்பது வெறுமை என்றும் உணர்ந்த அந்தோணி தனக்கென விட்டு சென்ற சொத்தை விற்று ஏழைகளுக்கு கொடுத்துவிட்டு, நாளையை குறித்த கவலை தனக்கு இருக்க கூடாது என்ற மனநிலையோடு துறவற வாழ்வை தோற்றுவிக்கிறார். 

உண்மையிலேயே இறைவனை முழுமையாக தேர்ந்துகொள்ளும்போது தான் அவரே எனது பாறை, என் மீட்பு, என் அரண், என் ஆற்றல் என்று நாம் கூறும் வார்த்தைகள் உண்மையில் பொருள்படும்.

THE WORD AND THE SAINT: 17th January, 2018

Wednesday, 2nd week in Ordinary Time - St. Anthony the Abbot

1 Sam 17: 32-33,37,40-51; Mk 3:1-6

If there is one thing that all religions and philosophies agree upon, it is this: that there is a constant conflict between the good and the evil in the world! We are part of the story whether we like it or not. From the eyes of faith, we can say, we are constantly posed with two options at any point of time: to choose something 'Godly" or to choose something 'ungodly'! 

Be it in our words, our actions or our attitudes... we become what we choose! If we choose our ego, our self-image, our selfish cravings, our prejudices or our selfish goals - we are lost forever. The giant sized philistine or the self righteous pharisees, this what they chose! Young David instead chose God: I come in the name of the Lord of hosts! 

Jesus chose God too, the loving God who cares for God's children. When St. Paul acclaims, 'I can do all things in Him who strengthens me!' (Phil 4:13), it was not pride but an outlook on life, an outlook that always chose whatever was Godly. "Finally beloved, whatever is true, whatever is honourable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is pleasing, whatever is commendable,...think about these things" say Paul (Phil 4:8). 

We celebrate St. Anthony the Abbot today, who inherited a huge property early in life, as his parents died, leaving him with his younger sister. But for Anthony what mattered was not the wealth, but the Word of the Lord. He sold everything and gave it to the poor and chose to become a hermit, living a life of austerity and holiness. A choice that was tremendous!

Only these choices can prove the claim, that 'God is our rock, our fortress, our stronghold, our deliverer, our shield in whom we take refuge'.

சனவரி 16: கடவுள் மட்டுமே

மாற்றம் காணாதது என்று வரலாற்றில் உண்டோ?

மாற்றம் காணாதது என்று ஏதேனும் வரலாற்றில் உண்டா என்று ஆய்ந்து பார்த்தோமேயானால், வெறுமையே மிஞ்சும். ஏனெனில் எல்லாம் மாறும்... இன்றுள்ள ஆட்சிகள் நாளை இருக்கமாட்டா. இன்றுள்ள ஆதிக்கங்கள் நாளை மறைந்து போவன. புகழும் பாராட்டும் காற்றில் கலந்துவிடுவன. ஆனால் அனைத்தையும் மாற்றக்கூடியவராய், தன்னிலே எந்த மாற்றமும் இல்லாதவராய் இருப்பவர் கடவுள் மட்டுமே. 

முதல் வாசகத்தில் இஸ்ராயேல் மக்களின் இரண்டாம் அரசனுக்கான தேர்வு தொடங்குவதை நாம் கேட்கின்றோம். அத்தனை ஆரவாரங்களுடன் அரசனான சவுல்  வரலாற்றிலே நகர்ந்து செல்லும் நேரம் வெகு விரைவில் வந்துவிட்டது. நம் வாழ்விலும் நிலையானதொன்றும் இல்லை என்பதை புரிந்து வாழும்போது உண்மைகள் நமக்கு விளங்க ஆரம்பிக்கின்றன. 

கடவுளால் தேர்ந்துகொள்ளப்பட்டவன் தான் சவுல்...எனினும் கடவுள் அவனை மாற்றுகிறார் - மாற்றியது கடவுள் என்பதை விட மாறியது அவன் என்பதே சரி. மாறாத கடவுளின் மனதின் படி வாழும் போது நமது வாழ்வும் மாறாத அர்த்தம் பெரும். மாறக்கூடியவைகளில் நமது ஆதாரம் அமைந்தால், நமது வாழ்வும் அதன் பொருளும் கூட மாறிக்கொண்டே இருக்கும். 

ஆழமான பொருள்மிக்க கொடை நமது வாழ்வு. இவ்வாழ்வை இறைவனை ஆதாரமாய் கொண்டு அமைத்தோமேயானால், அதன் உண்மை பொருள் துலங்குகின்றது. நிலையில்லாத உலக போக்கின்படியும், மாறக்கூடிய சமுதாய அளவைகளின்படியும் அமைத்தோமேயானால் வெகு விறைவில் வெறுமையாகிவிடும்.  வாழ்வின் உண்மை ஆதாரமாய் அமைய கூடிய ஒரே உண்மை கடவுள் மட்டுமே என்பதை புரிந்து கொள்வோம். நம் வாழ்வை காத்துக்கொள்வோம். 

GOD THE LORD OF HISTORY IS WITH US

Tuesday, 2nd week in Ordinary Time

1 Sam 16: 1-13; Mk 2: 23-28

God's choice of David is a typical indication of a fact that is repeatedly accentuated in the Old Testament - that God is the Lord of history! When the people of Israel were adamant of having a king of their own, they soon learnt how mistaken they were, with their experience of Saul. But God alone knew to write straight through those crooked lines, he chose a little shepherd boy and raised him to be God's beloved king and in his lineage brought the Saviour into the world. 

God broke conventions, the way the world saw things, the way the world judged things, the way the world prioritised values. God proved that God was beyond all laws and conventions and that God was the real Lord of the world and its history! 

Jesus, the Son of God, had to do the same to prove to those around him that there was something new happening in history...that God has visited them! Being prisoners of our own conventions and petty rules and regulations, and our prejudiced ideas and prefixed thinking, let us not miss the Lord who is present with us, every day and every moment, sharing every ordinary moment of our life - because, God, the Lord of history, is with us! 

சனவரி 15: அன்பும் உறவும் தவிர

உண்மை கிறிஸ்துவனை அடையாளம் காட்டுவது எது?

கட்டளைகளை கீழ்ப்படிதல், கடமைகளை தவறாமல் செய்தல், ஒறுத்தல் ஒடுக்கமென இறைவனுக்காக துன்பங்கள் ஏற்றல், தியாகங்கள் செய்தல் பல வகைகளில் இறைவார்த்தையை அறிவித்தல்.... இதில் எது உண்மை கிறிஸ்தவனை அடையாளப்படுத்தும் என்று நினைக்கிறீர்கள்? 

கட்டளைகள் கடமைகள் என்று சொன்னால் அதில் தவறு ஏதும் இல்லை ஆனால், நாம் இன்னும் பழைய எண்ணங்களிலேயே மூழ்கி இருக்க கூடும் என்று இன்றைய இறைவார்த்தை நமக்கு எடுத்து கூறுகிறது. 

கிறிஸ்துவில் உள்ளவர்கள் புது வாழ்வு அடைந்துவிட்டவர்கள் என்று பவுல் அடிகளார் கூறுவார். அவ்வாறு புதுமை அடைந்துவிட்டவர்கள், புது சிந்தனைக்குள்ளும் வரவேண்டாமா என்று கிறிஸ்து நம்மை அழைக்கிறார். புது தோற்பைகளில் புது இரசம் என்பது போல, நமது சிந்தனை கிறிஸ்துவில் புதுமை அடைந்ததை, புது வாழ்வை அணிந்ததாய் இருத்தல் வேண்டும் - புது அடையாளம், கிறிஸ்துவுக்குரிய அடையாளம், அன்பும் உறவும் தவிர வேறு  எது இருக்க முடியும்?

உண்மை கிறிஸ்தவ அடையாளம் என்பது அன்பும் உறவும் மட்டுமே. இவையின்றி பாராட்டப்படும் கடமைகளோ, தியாகங்களோ, வெறும் சட்டங்களோ உண்மை கிறிஸ்துவின் அடையாளம் ஆகா!

WHAT MATTERS IS LOVE AND RELATIONSHIP

WORD 2day: 15th January, 2018

Monday, 2nd week in Ordinary Time

1 Sam 15: 16-23; Mk 2: 18-22

The readings today present to us a few binaries... obedience-sacrifice; new wine - old wine; new wine skin - old skin... the message is clear: we have choices to make and each of those choices has its own consequences! New wine is not better than the old wine (ofcourse, those who are familiar with wine will know it better) but the new wine is "new" and needs a new skin that can hold it. If not, the nature of the new wine will pierce through the skin and spill out... wasting itself and tearing the skin. 

Christ's teaching invites us to a new outlook on the world, on relationships, on God, on faith, on our daily life and commitment -an outlook that is integral, holistic and complete. That which makes it complete is LOVE - love for God and love for one's brothers and sisters! 

Ritualism and Legalism are decisively transcended by an understanding of our Christian life in terms of love and relationship! It is not in keeping thousand and one laws that we are truly regarded "Christian"; it is not in the numerous practices of rigour and asceticism that we become true Christians...but it is in Love. When I love, I am from God for God is love! When there is love in me, I am far from God and I am far from being a Christian. 

Hence, what really matters is not who is more ascetic or who is more observant with religious rules, but who is truly loving, loving from the depth of one's being! What really matters is love and relationship, true love and authentic relationships!
