Revive the Choice for true Joy

Friday after Ash Wednesday: 16th February, 2018
Is 58: 1-9a; Mt 9: 14-15

What is the purpose of fasting in lent... what do you think? Some one remarked to me, I wish to come down by atleast 10 kilos at the end of the lent! Another one said, the next forty days will help my diabetes! What is your purpose...why do you fast?

What if you fasted the whole day and because of it you get irritated and frown on every one whom you come across? What if you prayed for a long three hours and on coming out you lose your head on the first person you meet! What if you went out of your way to help someone and took more efforts to let everyone around know that you did something like that!

Fasting cannot be for feeding one's ego and a means of self-justification. 

Fasting is not to make a statement to the others that I am better and they are less committed!

Fasting is not to fill my heart with that vain glory that I am doing a great big favour to God by my abstaining from food or from some delicacies...what good does that to God?

Fasting should make us more controlled; it should make us more detached; more calm and serene! It should fill us with joy that comes from the fact that we have participated in the sufferings of the Lord, not proud of it or haughty about it! 

Fasting is a choice, a choice for joy, a choice for true joy, a joy that comes from Christ, the joy that gave the apostles the courage to go on inspite of the threats and dangers. 

Let us revive our choice for true joy!

பிப்ரவரி 15: வாழ்வையே தேர்ந்துக்கொள்ளுங்கள்

தவக்காலம் 2018: வாழ்வா சாவா? நன்மையா தீமையா?

இதோ உங்கள் முன் வாழ்வையும் சாவையும் வைக்கிறேன், நன்மையையும் தீமையையும் முன் வைக்கிறேன் ... எதை நீங்கள் தேர்ந்துக்கொள்வீர்கள் என்பது உங்களை பொறுத்ததே! வாழ்வை தேர்ந்துக்கொள்வது வாழ்வின் இறைவனை தேர்ந்துகொள்ளவதாகும். ஆனால் வாழ்வின் சுகங்களையும், தேவைகளையும் முன்னிலைப்படுத்தும் போது வாழ்வின் இறைவனை மறந்துவிடும் அபாயம் இருப்பதை நாம் உணரவேண்டும். இன்று உலகில் நாம் காணும் நிலை இதுவே.   

வாழ்வை தேர்ந்துக்கொள்வது என்பது பெரும் காரியங்களில் மட்டுமல்ல... சின்னஞ்சிறு நிகழ்வுகளிலும், நமது சொற்களிலும், சிறு செயலகளிலும், அன்றாடம் எடுக்கும் முடிவுகளிலும், உள்மன சிந்தனைகளிலும், நாம் முன்னிறுத்தும் முக்கியத்துவங்களிலும் அடங்கியுள்ளது என்பதை நாம் உணரவேண்டும். இன்று உலகம் தேடிச்செல்லும் பரிமாணங்களை பார்த்தால் நாம் தேர்ந்துகொள்ளவது வாழ்வையா சாவையா என்ற வினா விஞ்சி நிற்கின்றது. பொருளும் பகட்டும், புகழும் பிறர் சொல்லும், சுற்றியுள்ளோரின் கண்ணோட்டமும் உலகத்தின் போக்கும் முக்கியமாக தோன்றும் போது நமது தேர்வு உண்மையிலேயே வாழ்வா சாவா என்று சிந்திக்க வேண்டியுள்ளது!

வாழ்வையே தேர்ந்துக்கொள்வோம்... வெளிபூச்ச்சுகளிலும் வெளியலங்காரங்களிலும், வெளித்தோற்றங்களிலும், அடுத்தவரின் கன்னூட்டங்களிலும் நம்மையே இழக்காது - வாழ்வையே தேர்ந்துக்கொள்வோம்!

Revive the Choice for Life

Thursday after Ash Wednesday: 15th February, 2018

Dt 30: 15-20;Lk 9: 22-25

The Word today invites us to choose life. Choosing life is to choose the author of life, instead of the spices of life. Those which add taste and colour to life are good but not essential to live. We would be highly mistaken if we give them the priority place in our life. Life is all about choices and choices are made at every instance in life... every word that I choose to say, every thought I entertain, every deed that I choose to do should manifest a will and a commitment to promote life, and life to the full for everyone!

Choosing life is a revival that we need to accentuate today! The world is confused in its choices - the ephemerals over essentials, the paraphernalia over the profound, and pleasing the world over placing oneself at the disposal of he almighty creator! The confusion does not stop with few or many individuals but diffuses itself as a culture and that is what Pope Benedict termed, 'the culture of death'. 

When we said yes at our baptism, or when our parents said that for us, and when we confirmed it at the Confirmation, we said yes to life! It is the Lord of Life who has called us and who continues to live with us and guide us! Let us not be deceived by external shows or outwardly opinions, whether we suffer or die, we are in safe hands as long as we choose the lord, as long as we choose Life!


Let this lenten journey inspire us to revive our choice for life!

பிப்ரவரி 14: அன்பின் தீ மூட்டுவோம்

தவக்காலம் 2018: சாம்பல் புதன் 

தவக்காலத்தை நாம் தொடங்குகின்றோம்... இத்தவக்காலம் முழுவதுமாக நமக்கு ஒரு பெரும் சவால் கொடுக்கப்படுகின்றது - அன்பின் தீ நம்மிலும், நம் திருச்சபையிலும், நம்மை சுற்றிலும் சுடர்விட்டெறிய நம்மால் முடிந்ததை செய்ய இறைவன் நம்மை அழைக்கின்றார். 

அன்பை கொண்டாடும் தினமாக பலராலும் குறிப்பாக இளைஞர்களால் சிறப்பிக்கப்படும் இன்றைய தினத்திலே நாம் இப்பயணத்தை தொடங்குவது மிக அழகானதொரு ஒன்றியமைதலாக தோன்றுகின்றது. 

நெறிகேடு பெருகுவதால் பலருடைய அன்பு தணிந்துபோகும் என்று எச்சரிக்கும் கிறிஸ்து, அவ்வன்பை மீண்டும் கொழுந்துவிட்டு எரியும்படி மூட்ட நம்மை அழைக்கிறார். 

இத்தவக்காலம் அன்பின் தீ மூட்டும் காலமாக அமையட்டும் என்ற வாழ்த்தோடும் செபத்தோடும் இறைவனின் அருளோடு இக்காலத்தை தொடங்குவோம், இணைந்து பயணிப்போம்.

RevivaLent 2018 - #1

Ash Wednesday: 14th February, 2018

Joel 2: 12-18; 2 Cor 5: 20 - 6:2; Mt 6: 1-6, 16-18

It's the holy season of Lent again: Happy Lent! 
Don't consider that a strange wish! Lent is meant to be a happy season: it is no season of mourning, but a happy season of a return to home, from all the wandering. If this season has to move towards a fruitful direction, then we have to heed to the four fold call that Lent has...

LISTEN to the Word: the first call is to listen to the Word. Harden not your hearts as at Meribah, says the Lord. We have to make it a habit of listening to the Word of the Lord on a daily basis. Lent can be a training, a tuning into that habit.

ENCOUNTER the Lord: In the Word, in the daily events, in the people whom we meet, in the people whom we don't like to meet, in those whom we avoid on purpose, we are called to encounter the Lord. An encounter is more than just a coming across; it is bouncing into someone, beholding the person in all entirety and building up a positive loving relationship!

NURTURE relationships: We believe that Lord Our God is fundamentally a unity of three persons. The season invites us to come in touch with the Lord, through various means -to nurture the relationships that we have received from the  Lord. By the very image and likeness we bear and by the gift we have received at our baptism, we are called to be people who value and treasure relationships, with God and with others.

TRANSFORM yourself: The ultimate call is transformation. Conversion, Repentance, Return, Reconcile, Change... we would hear these words more often these days. The Lord invites us to pass through this period of reflection and self evaluation, that we may come out with concrete plans of action that would transform our lives. 

We shall commence from today, a series of thoughts on "RevivaLent" ... a lent that calls us to a revival, revival of our love! Pope Francis sets us a task this lent: Because of the increase in iniquity, the love of many will grow cold...and we are called to revive that love, that love that is endangered today, the true Christian love!

It is curious that Lenten Journey begins on the Valentine's day this year...a hype about love, though we hardly are certain they know what the hype is all about! What is the kind of love to be revived? How can it be revived? And how I can be instrumental in that revival? These are the questions we shall set ourselves to think about.

May this lent be a blessed moment of Listening to the Word, Encountering the Lord on a daily basis, Nurture our relationship with the Lord and Transform our lives into those which become lovely offerings in the presence of the Lord. May these weeks of prayer and spiritual practices, mould and transform us into more convinced children of God.

Let us revive love this lent!

பிப்ரவரி 13: இன்னுமா உங்களுக்கு புரியவில்லை?

இறைவார்த்தைக்கும் இறையாட்சிக்கும் உட்பட்ட வாழ்வு...

தன் பொறுமையை இழக்கும் இயேசுவை இன்று நாம் சந்திக்கின்றோம். இங்கு  மட்டுமல்ல, வேறு சில இடங்களிலும் கூட இயேசு பொறுமை இழக்கிறார், அதை வெளிகாட்டவும் செய்கிறார். எதற்காக பொறுமை இழக்கிறார் என்பதே நாம் கவனிக்க வேண்டிய உண்மை. தான் நினைத்தது நடக்கவில்லை என்பதாலோ, தான் எண்ணியது கிடைக்கவில்லை என்பதாலோ அல்ல... அது நமது காரணங்கள். இயேசுவின் ஏமாற்றத்திற்கு காரணம் இவ்வளவு நாட்கள் தன்னோடு இருந்தவர்களும், இத்தனை பெரும் காரியங்கள் நிகழ்வதை கண்டவர்களும் கூட இன்னும் இறைவார்த்தைக்கும் இறையரசிற்கும் உட்பட்ட வாழ்க்கை என்றால் என்ன என்பதை புரிந்துகொள்ளவில்லையே என்பது தான். 

பழக்கம், வழக்கம், பாரம்பரியம், முறை, காலாகாலமாக செய்வது இதுவே என்றெல்லாம் நமக்கே இலக்கணம் கற்பித்துக்கொண்டு நாம் செய்யும் பல  செயல்களும், சிந்திக்கும் பல சிந்தனைகளும், இறைவார்த்தைக்கும் இறையாட்சிக்கும் நேர் எதிராய் இருப்பது நாம் அறிந்ததே. எனினும், அதையே நாம் வலிந்து பிடித்துக்கொண்டிருக்கும் போது நாம் கிறிஸ்துவின் இந்த ஏமாற்றத்திற்கு காரணமாகிறோம். 

இவையே பெரும் சோதனைகளாகும். சோதனைகள் இறைவனிடம் இருந்து வருவதில்லை... இவற்றை நாமாக தான் வருவித்துக்கொள்கிறோம் என்று யாக்கோபு தெளிவாக நமக்கு எடுத்துச்சொல்கிறார். நமது ஆசைகளும், சோதனைகளும், பாவங்களும், அதன் காரணமாய் வரும் இறப்பும் இறைவனுக்கு உகந்த வாழ்க்கை அல்ல என்பதை நாம் எப்போது புரிந்து கொள்ள போகிறோம் என்று கிறிஸ்து நம்மை இன்று வினவுகிறார். 

சிந்திக்காது, இறைவார்த்தையின் அழைப்புக்கு செவிமடுக்காது, இறையாட்சியின் மக்களாய் வாழ முடிவெடுக்காது நாம் வாழ்ந்துகொண்டிருந்தோம் என்றால், வெகு விரைவில் இதே கேள்வி நம்மை நோக்கியும் எழும்: இன்னுமா உங்களுக்கு புரியவில்லை?

Do you still not understand?

WORD 2day: 13th February, 2018

Tuesday, 6th week in Ordinary Time
Jas 1: 12-18; Mk 8: 14-21

How agitated Jesus gets today with his disciples! Jesus expects them to rise above the ordinary or the normal. As Jesus warned us elsewhere: if our perfection does not surpass those that of the scribes and the pharisees, that is if we do not rise above the 'usual' way the world looks at reality, we will not be considered fit for the Reign of God! 

The so-called normal attitudes of the world, the value systems propagated as "normal" by the world, the life style of the so called successful that stands counter to what the Gospel teaches... these are the temptations that we have today! 

Of course, they do not come from God, reiterates St.James. Our desires, temptations, sin and resultant death: this is the cycle that Jesus wants us to understand, resist, surpass, and triumph over. None of us can ever say after an act of unrighteousness, that we were not at all aware of its nature! 

Let us not deceive ourselves! We know what we are surrounded by, we know what we go through on  a daily basis and we know what is appreciable and what is not worthy of our call to be children of God. In spite of all the graces that we have received and the gratuitous gifts that we have received from the Lord, if we still insist on giving up on our call to commitment and righteous living, we will soon hear that question addressed to us by Jesus: do you still not understand?

பிப்ரவரி 12: இறைவா, நீ எந்தன் பாறை

பாறையாம் இறைவனை மட்டுமே நம்பி...

இயேசு கிறிஸ்து, தான் வாழ்ந்த போது மற்றனைவரும் தன்னை ஏற்றுக்கொள்ள வேண்டுமெனவோ பாராட்டவேண்டுமெனவோ நினைத்ததே இல்லை. தனக்கு சரி எனப்பட்டதை பேசினார், சரியில்லை எனத்தோன்றியதை சுட்டிக்காட்டினார். தான் யார் என்பதை அறிந்திருந்தார், அதையே வெளிப்படையாய் வாழ்ந்தும் வந்தார். எண்ணியதை பேசினார், பேசியதையே வாழ்ந்தும் காட்டினார்... தான் இழக்கவோ, பெற்றுக்கொள்ளவோ ஏதுமில்லை...இறைவனின் மகன் என்ற தற்புரிதலும் தன்னையும் தன் சொல்லையும் செயலையும் இறைவனே வழிநடத்துகின்றார் என்ற அசைக்க முடியாத நம்பிக்கையும் அவருக்கு அசாத்தியமான துணிச்சலை அளித்தது. அதனால் தான் அவரால்  நானும் தந்தையும் ஒன்றே என்று கூற முடிந்தது. பரிசேயர்களாலோ சதுசேயர்களாலோ இதை புரிந்துகொள்ளவே இயலவில்லை! இவரிடம் எதோ ஒன்று வேறுபட்டு உள்ளது என்பதை மட்டும் அவர்கள் தெளிவாக அறிந்திருந்தனர். 

நாம் பலவேளைகளில் நம்மையே நமது செல்வத்தோடும்,  அந்தஸ்து, கெளரவம், என்ற சமூகநிலைகளோடும், உலகம் தரும் பட்டங்கள் பதவிகளோடும், அடுத்தவரின் பாராட்டுகளோடும் அல்லது அவர்களது பார்வைகளோடும் அடையாளப்படுத்திக் கொள்கின்றோம். இவை உலரும் புல்லைப்போன்றும், வாடும் மலரைப்போன்றும் நொடி பொழுதில் நம்மை விட்டு அகலக்கூடியவை, என்று அப்போஸ்தலர் யாக்கோபு நமக்கு நினைவூட்டுகிறார்.

நமது அடையாளம் மாறாத ஒரு புள்ளியிலே நிலைத்து நிற்க வேண்டும் என்பதே இன்றைய வார்த்தையின் அழைப்பாகும்... அது நான் இறைவனின் மகன், இறைவனின் மகள் என்ற உண்மையே! அவரது உருவிலும் சாயலிலும் நாம் படைக்கப்பட்டுள்ளோம் என்ற தன்னுணர்வே. நம்மை அன்பு செய்யும் இறைவனை காட்டிலும் மேலானது வேறேதும் இல்லை என்ற அசைக்க முடியாத ஒரு நம்பிக்கை நம்மை வழிநடத்தவேண்டும். எந்த தீங்கு நம்மை நெருங்கினாலும் சூழ்ந்தாலும், 'இறைவா...நீ எந்தன் பாறை, என்னை யாரும் அசைக்க வியலாது' என்று துணிச்சலோடு வாழ முடிவெடுப்போமா?

The Lord, our Rock!

WORD 2day: 12th February, 2018

Monday, 6th week in Ordinary Time
Jas 1:1-11; Mk 8: 11-13

During his life and ministry, Jesus was convinced that he had nothing to prove! He was what he was - the Son of God, the Word Incarnate. He spoke what he believed and lived what he spoke. That gave him an authority that the Pharisees and the Scribes could never understand. It came from his holistic self-understanding, an understanding in terms of the ONE who had sent him: "For I and the Father are one", he declared (Jn 10:30). 

Many a times we identify ourselves with the riches we have, the social status we enjoy, the titles and the offices we hold, the adulation from others and the image that others have of us. These are like the drooping flowers and the fading beauty, reminds St.James. 

Our identity rests in one thing that never changes: the truth that we are sons and daughters of the One God, that we are created in the image and the likeness of that One God who has loved us into existence. When we get this fact imprinted in our hearts...no trial or doubt, no suffering or shock will ever affect our perseverance (Jas 1:4). 

Let our life be founded on that unshakable foundation, the Lord, our Rock!

Watch out or REACH OUT?

All for the Glory of God!

6th Sunday in Ordinary Time
Lev 13: 1-2, 44-46; 1 Cor 10:31-11:1; Mk 1: 40-45

Look at the world today - people suffering, people struggling, people frenetically searching to make their life more livable, in opposition to those hoarding wealth, securing power, attaining their wicked ends, manipulating people, twisting rules and oppressing humanity! In this when you come across a news, or a report, or witness a case of a suffering human person what would be your immediate response: to watch out or to reach out?
At times when sad and cruel things happen to some individuals - the society makes use of this an an opportunity to tell others, WATCH OUT. The others become a case study, a warning, an example to learn from, an object to be analysed and passed judgement upon. How many times we have seen people in real trouble suffering, but have passed on, have been inactive either thanking our stars or judging the person to deserve it all. Is that  a Christian attitude? I am reminded of Pastor Martin Niemoller's powerful words:
   First they came for the Communists
   And I did not speak out
   Because I was not a Communist
   Then they came for the Socialists
   And I did not speak out
   Because I was not a Socialist
   Then they came for the trade unionists
   And I did not speak out
   Because I was not a trade unionist
   Then they came for the Jews
   And I did not speak out
   Because I was not a Jew
   Then they came for me
   And there was no one left
   To speak out for me

When we come across an injustice done to a helpless person or a just cause, we move on today with a protest on the facebook and twitter... because we are all busy. And we teach ourselves to watch out that we may not get into the same problem...to be more careful and precautious. 

Jesus breaks all these precautions - when he saw the person with leprosy, he had compassion, did not stop with telling others how sad it is. He wished that this person be cured, he did not stop with a wishful thinking alone! He made it a point to REACH OUT... he spoke to him, stretched out his hand and touched him! He reached out! That is the challenge proposed to us: to wish well for the suffering, to stretch our hands (not merely thoughts) and to touch them, by our closeness, action and solidarity.

Today there are people who seem to reach out, or atleast claim to reach out...but the intentions: for their own popularity, gain, hidden agenda, making use of the poor, the marginalised, the oppressed as stepping stones to their fame, making them doubly oppressed - oppressed by the society at large and the oppressed by those who claim to be their saviour!

An experience from the life of Mother Teresa can never be forgotten in this context - when a reporter commented to Mother, looking at the dirtiest tasks that she was involved in, like washing the wounds and wiping the puss: 'Mother, even if they gave me a million dollars I would not be able to do this!', the Saint of Kolkata seemed to have said: 'Even for a couple of those million dollars, I would not do this. I do this for the Christ whom I see in these faces'. Not for me, not for what I gain, but for Christ whom I want to serve...what a life she lived.

Jesus teaches us the same: the purpose of reaching out is ALL FOR THE GLORY OF GOD. He strictly ordered him not to speak about what Jesus did, because what should be spoken of is the glory of God revealed in the healed person! St. Paul puts it so plainly: whether you eat or drink, whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God (1 Cor 10:31). Let us reach out to the suffering brothers and sisters, those who feel lost in their lives, those who are groping for meaning in a dark corner of this society, those who are gasping for fresh air in their personal lives and families...but reach out to them in silence, a loving silence, a divine silence, an active silence, the silence that makes the presence of God felt... Let us Reach out, for the Glory of God!
