Jesus - an Experience!

Wednesday, 3rd week in Eastertide

18th April,  2018: Acts 8: 1b-8; Jn 6: 35-40

When things were getting worse the believers were getting stronger. They were scattered, but once in diaspora they continued their witnessing. There was something in them that made them just reckless about their new experience. That experience was so gripping that it made them forget all the pain they had to go through.

We keep receiving news after news of people who are troubled, tortured, maltreated and threatened at the hands of the mindless and irrational fanatics these days. These brothers and sisters too are capable of it because they are gripped by the experience they have had of the Risen one.

Just yesterday we were discussing about some youngsters who have expressed their willingness to go to Syria, to be of assistance and consolation to the people who are suffering due to inhumanity there. What a radical choice -  will it be possible without being gripped by a life changing experience? 

Jesus cannot remain for me an idea to be discussed, nor a principle to be fought for, but a person to be loved, a person to be experienced! For me today Jesus has to become that experience,  that experience which grips me to a total transformation that I will fear nothing, for I know my Lord will raise me up on the last day, come what may!

ஏப்ரல் 18: கிறிஸ்து ஒரு அனுபவம்

கருத்தியல் உண்மைகளும் வாழ்வியல் அனுபவமும் 

இந்த நாட்களிலே தொடக்க கால திருச்சபையை பற்றி நாம் படித்து கொண்டு வருகிறோம். நாம் அறியும் ஒரு தெளிவான உண்மை... அவர்களை சுற்றியிருந்த சூழல் கடுமை ஆக ஆக, அவர்களும் மேலும் மேலும் வலிமை பெற்றவர்களாய் மாறிக்கொண்டே வந்தனர்! காரணம்... அவர்களது அனுபவம், உயிர்த்த கிறிஸ்துவின் அனுபவம்! அந்த அனுபவம் அவர்களை முற்றிலுமாய் மாற்றியிருந்தது. 

இன்று பல இடங்களிலிருந்து கிறிஸ்தவ சகோதர சகோதரிகள் துன்புறுத்தப்படுவது பற்றியும், தாக்கப்படுவது பற்றியும், அச்சுறுத்தப்படுவது பற்றியும், மிரட்டப்படுவது பற்றியும் செய்திகள் நமக்கு வந்த வண்ணமே உள்ளன. சிந்திக்க தயாரில்லாத அடிப்படைவாதிகளின் எந்த அச்சுறுத்தலுக்கும் அஞ்சாது துணிந்து தங்கள் கிறிஸ்தவ வாழ்வையும் சாட்சியத்தையும் தொடரும் இந்த சகோதர சகோதரிகளும் கூட, அதே அனுபவத்தால் ஆட்கொள்ளப்பட்டவர்களே. 

நேற்று நாங்கள் சிலர் பேசிக்கொண்டிருந்த போது  ஒருவர் சில இளைஞர்களை பற்றி பகிர்ந்துகொண்டார்... அந்த இளைஞர்கள் சிரியாவுக்கு செல்ல தாங்கள் தயாராய் இருப்பதாகவும், அங்குள்ள போராலும் அமைதியின்மையாலும் பாதிக்கப்பட்ட மக்களுக்கு ஆறுதல் கூறவும் உதவவும் வேண்டுமென ஆவலாய் இருப்பதாகவும் கூறியுள்ளார்கள். இவர்களும் உயிர்த்த கிறிஸ்துவின் அனுபவத்தால் ஆட்கொள்ளப்பட்டவர்களே!

கிறிஸ்து வெறும் கருத்தியலாய் இருந்துவிட்டால் போதாது, நாம் தாங்கிப்பிடிக்கும் உண்மையாய் இருந்துவிட்டால் போதாது...நம்மை ஆட்கொள்ளும் அனுபவமாக அவர் மாற வேண்டும். கிறிஸ்து யார் என்று நான் எனது அனுபவத்தால் பிறரோடு பகிர வேண்டும். அப்போது மட்டுமே என் வாழ்வு இந்த உலகிற்கும் எனக்கும் ஒரு மாற்றத்தை ஏற்படுத்தும்.

Tuesday, 3rd week in Eastertide

17th April, 2018: Acts 7:51-8:1a; Jn 6: 30-35

Sometimes when I counsel persons to look at Christ and the suffering that he underwent, at the endurance he had and at his capacity to surrender himself into the hands of God, at his capacity to forgive etc.,  they tend to retort saying: 'but he was son of God!" That is a heretic way of thinking,  I threaten them with a smile.

Yes, Jesus was the Son of God but he was a human person and fully so. He was not just appearing to be a human being, he was a human being. As the letter to the Hebrews says,  he was like us,  a human being in everything! That is infact the most challenging part of our faith. That Jesus lived our life,  he went through all that we experience ourselves: feelings and temptations, sufferings and anxieties, irritations and all of human realities. We tend to overlook that because, if we accept it we have to accept also the challenge of we ourselves living in his footsteps.  

The early Church was highly conscious of this call and we have today in the first reading the fruit of this - Stephen. Stephen was a chip from the same block as Christ. Luke while recounting the scene of Stephen's martyrdom, makes it a point to record those words that he said at the end: those were the very words that Jesus said when he died. Luke repeats it here to impress upon us that this is what we are called to be: a chip from that same block.

Do not be carried away by things that you apparently see - the people thought Moses gave them bread - it was God who gave it to them. It is easy for us to be satisfied with the apparent superficial mode of living our Christian life. The Lord says, No - you are challenged to become like Him, like Christ, a chip from that very same block!

ஏப்ரல் 17: அவரை கண்டு, அவராக...

கிறிஸ்தவ வாழ்வு என்பது கிறிஸ்துவாக மாறுவதே 

மனதில் பாரங்களோடு சிலர் வந்து பகிரும்போது, அந்த கவலைகளுக்கு உண்மையிலேயே பொருள் தெரியாத போது, அவர்களை பார்த்து சிலுவையை பாருங்கள், அதில் தொங்கும் கிறிஸ்துவை பாருங்கள், அவர் பட்ட துன்பங்களை பாருங்கள், அனைத்தையும் தாண்டி அவர் தன்னையே தந்தையின் கரங்களில் ஒப்புக்கொடுத்த விதத்தை பாருங்கள், என்று நான் சொல்வதுண்டு... உடனே அவர்கள், "என்னதான் இருந்தாலும் அவர் கடவுளின் மகன்; அவரால் முடியும்" என்பார்கள். உடனே நான் அவர்களை பார்த்து, "நீங்கள் இப்போது சொன்னது ஒரு தப்பறை, இதற்காக திருச்சபையிலிருந்து கூட உங்களை விலக்கி வைக்க முடியும்" என்று பயமுறுத்தி சிரிப்பதுண்டு!

ஆம், கிறிஸ்து மனிதனாக வாழ்ந்தார், அந்த துன்பங்களை எதிர்கொண்டார்... அவர் மனிதனை போல் வாழவில்லை, ஒரு மனிதனாக வாழ்ந்தார்.  எபிரேயருக்கு எழுதப்பட்ட திருமுகம் நமக்கு கூறுவதுபோல, பாவம் தவிர மற்றனைத்திலும் அவர் மனிதனாகவே வாழ்ந்தார். பல முறை நாம் இதை பொருட்படுத்துவதே இல்லை, ஏனெனில், இதை நாம் ஏற்றுக்கொண்டால், வேறொரு சவாலையும் நாம் ஏற்க வேண்டியிருக்கும்... அவரை கண்டு அவராகவே வாழ்வதே அந்த சவால் - அதுவே கிறிஸ்தவர் என்ற பெயருக்கு உண்மை பொருளாகும். தொடக்க கால திருச்சபை இதை தெளிவாய் உணர்ந்திருந்தது.

அதை வாழ்ந்து காட்டிய  ஒருவரை தான் இன்று முதல் வாசகத்தில் சந்திக்கிறோம் - ஸ்தேவான். ஸ்தேவான் கொல்லப்பட்ட காட்சியை விளக்கும் போது லூக்கா மறவாமல் ஸ்தேவான் இறந்தபோது கூறிய வார்த்தைகளை குறிப்பிடுகிறார், அதற்கு ஒரு காரணமுண்டு. அதென்னவென்றால், கிறிஸ்து சாகும் போது சிலுவையில் கூறிய அதே வார்த்தைகளை ஸ்தேவானும் கூறுகிறார்... கிறிஸ்துவின் அதே மனநிலையோடு அவர் உயிர்துறக்கிறார், ஏனெனில் கிறிஸ்துவின் அதே மனநிலையோடு அவர் வாழ்ந்துவந்தார்.

தங்களுக்கு வானிலிருந்து மன்னா அளித்தது மோசே தான் என்று மேலோட்டமாகவே தங்கள் நம்பிக்கை வாழ்வை வாழ்ந்து கொண்டிருந்த அந்த மக்களை சிந்திக்க வைக்கிறார் கிறிஸ்து. வெளியடையாளங்களையும், புறத்தோற்றங்களையும் தாண்டி நமது நம்பிக்கை வாழ்வு வாழப்பட வேண்டும். ஆழமாக கிறிஸ்துவை கண்டு, அவரை புரிந்துகொண்டு, அவராகவே நாம் வாழ்வது தான் உண்மையான கிறிஸ்தவ வாழ்வு என்பதை நாம் எப்போது உணரப்போகிறோம்?

To See and Side the right Priorities!

Monday, 3rd week in Eastertide

16th April, 2018: Acts 6:8-15; Jn 6: 22-29

His face shone like an angel. But they decided to kill him all the same! They saw the great works and words that Jesus had but they ran after him only for the food they could get. At times we kill the things that pertain to God not only by being against them but by even not being attentive to the true spirit of it.

It is easier to ward off dangers from the quarters that are known to be contrary to us. But the more dangerous ones are those that seem to take a neutral stand within us and amidst us,  they can be real spirit dampeners and blind leaders.

First of all the call today is to make it clear to the world what my priority is! In order that I do it, I should know it first - what are those things on which I act? What are those things that really matter to me? What are those criteria or events that move me to action immediately... are they pertaining to my own good or to the common good or to Truth! Once I am clear of the priority I have, I need to see how close to or how far from God it is! If God and God's word is my priority, there could be nothing better than that!

The Second call  that I have is, to be alert to people  and their priorities, so that we do not side the wrong faction! Here is where we need to have the clarity to know the priority of people - appreciate it when right and denounce it when wrong! Fearlessly! Because we see the heavens open and the Son of God seated at the right hand of the Father!

ஏப்ரல் 16: உன் முக்கியத்துவங்கள் என்ன?

எதை நீ முன்னிறுத்துகிறாய் - உலகம் உன்னை கேட்கிறது!

ஸ்தேவானின் முகம் ஒளிர்வதை அவர்கள் கண்டார்கள்... எனினும் அவரை கொன்றார்கள். கிறிஸ்து செய்த அனைத்து புதுமைகளையும் அவர்கள் கண்டார்கள், எனினும் அவர் தந்த வெறும் உணவுக்காக அவரை பின்தொடர்ந்தார்கள்! எதிர்த்து நிற்பதாலோ, நிராகரிப்பதாலோ மட்டுமல்ல சரியான முக்கியத்துவத்தை தராமலிருப்பதாலும் இறைவனை விட்டு நாம் அகன்று போகலாம். எதிர்த்து நிற்பது என்பதோ, நிராகரிப்பது என்பதோ தெளிவான ஒரு நிலைப்பாடாகும்; ஆனால் உடனிருப்பது போன்றே இருப்பதும் அதே சமயம், உரிய இடத்தையும் முக்கியத்துவத்தையும் தராமலிருப்பதும் நமது வாழ்க்கையின் தரத்தையே குறைத்துவிடுகிறது. 

இறைவனின் பிள்ளைகள், கடவுளின் மக்கள் என்றால், நமது வாழ்வில் எது முக்கியத்துவம் பெறுகிறது என்று இந்த உலகிற்கு நாம்  தெளிவாக எடுத்து சொல்லியாக வேண்டும். உலகிற்கு எடுத்து சொல்லவேண்டுமென்றால், அது எனக்கு தெரிந்திருக்கவேண்டும். உண்மையிலேயே என் வாழ்வின் முக்கியத்துவம் என்ன? எதை நான் முதன்மை படுத்துகிறேன்? எது எனது கவனத்தையும் நேரத்தையும் அதிகம் எடுத்துக்கொள்கிறது...என்று நான் ஆழமாக சிந்திக்க வேண்டியுள்ளது. 

இறைவனையும் இறைவனுக்கு உரியதையும் நான் முன்னிறுத்தும் போது, எனது வாழ்வும் ஒளிர்கின்றது, அதை உலகும் காண்கின்றது. காண்பதனால் மட்டுமே அதை உலகு ஏற்கப்போவதும் இல்லை, என்னை கொண்டாடப்போவதும் இல்லை... எனினும் என் நிலைப்பாடுகள் மாறாமலிருக்கவேண்டும்... அப்படி இருப்பின், நானும் விண்ணகம் திறந்திருப்பதையும், மனுமகன் தந்தையின் வலப்பக்கம் விற்றிருப்பதையும் காண்பேன்!

கிறிஸ்துவே காலத்தின் நிறைவு

பாஸ்கா காலத்தின் மூன்றாம் ஞாயிறு - 15.04.2018

வாழ்வின் பல வேளைகளில் நாம் நமது துன்பங்களையும், சோதனைகளையும் முன்னிறுத்தி ஐயம் கொள்வதுண்டு... இந்த மண்ணக வாழ்விற்கு உண்மையிலேயே பொருள் உள்ளதா? எதை நோக்கி நான் பயணித்துக்கொண்டிருக்கிறேன்? நிகழும் அனைத்திற்கும் ஏதாவது காரணமுள்ளதா? என்றெல்லாம் கேள்விகள் எழும். அனைத்திற்கும் பதில் ஒருவரே..அது கிறிஸ்து மட்டுமே, அவரே காலத்தின் நிறைவு... 

அவரில் என் வாழ்வு வாழப்படும் போது அந்த நிறைவு என்னை ஆட்கொள்ளுகிறது... அவரை தவிர்த்து என் வாழ்வை வாழ நினைக்கும் போது அந்த நிறைவு என்னை விட்டு விலகி போகின்றது. இன்று பொருளின்றி வாழ்வோர் எத்தனை பேர், அவர்கள் மனதில் இருக்கும் கேள்விகளும் ஐயங்களும் எத்தனை... நாமறிந்ததே!

இந்நிறைவை நாமடைய இயல்பைமீறிய செயல்கள் ஏதும் செய்யவேண்டிய அவசியமில்லை! என் அன்றாட வாழ்வே இந்நிறைவை நோக்கிய பயணம் தான் என்பதை நான் உணர்ந்துகொள்ள வேண்டும். என் அன்றாட தேர்வுகள் என்ன? நான் பேச தெரிந்துகொள்ளும் சொற்கள், நான் சிந்திக்க முதன்மைப்படுத்தும் எண்ணங்கள், என் வாழ்வில் நான் கொடுக்கும் முக்கியத்துவங்கள்...இவையே என் வாழ்வை நிர்ணயிக்கின்றன. இவை கிறிஸ்துவை நோக்கி இருக்கும் போது... என் அன்றாட வாழ்வே நிறைவை நோக்கிய பயணமாகிறது!

Christ, We and Everyday!

III Sunday of Easter: 15th April, 2018

Acts 3: 13-15, 17-19; 1 Jn 2: 1-5a; Lk 24: 35-48

What am I upto? What is happening in my life? Why am I going through all that I am going through in life? I have always been very obedient to the Lord and in spite of that I am through so many things in life...but why? - these are some questions we often come up with or listen from people. 

What is the meaning of suffering? What is the ultimate purpose of life? Will I be totally certain of it at any point of time within my lifetime? If yes, then where is the element of mystery that makes my life so rich?

Very rarely does a Sunday Liturgy lack any reading from the Old Testament. If you notice today, all the three readings are from the New Testament. And there seems to be a logical reason behind it. The readings are all taken from the new testament to draw home to us the fact that Jesus Christ,the Son of God, is the fulfillment of the promises from the initial promise at the Garden of Eden right through the law and the prophets! The first reading and the Gospel establishes that in clear terms. When the fullness of time had come (Gal 4:4), God sent the fulfillment of God's promises.

If Christ is the fulfillment, we are called to be fulfillments too. It is true that Christ is the fullness of Revelation, the climax of God's revelation and the entirety of all that is to be revealed about God. But that Revelation to the world is going on,in progress even today, continuously, in and through you and me. That is what God wished and Jesus initiated. that we become the continued fulfillments of God's salvific plan. Jesus made us living testimonies of the unfolding plan of God. We are not finished products and God's salvation plan is not a closed chapter. The salvation is wrought by the blood of Christ, but that salvation history is being written, chapter by chapter, a page a day!

Yes, our everyday is a page of our salvation history. Our choices, our lifestyle, our decisions, our assents and our negations - everything is part of the holisitic salvation history being written by God, in and through my life. The question is, how flexible am I in the hands of God; how faithful am I to the mind of God; how freely do I submit myself to the plan of God? The teachings of the Lord, that comes our way through the various elements of our faith life, like the commandments, the traditional expressions of faith, the need to find time and space for God in one's life, the obligation to express that importance of that time and space, through our thoughts, words and deeds of love towards our neighbours, the invitation to live our daily life with the perspective of eternity always before our eyes: that everything finds its fulfillment only in God... these are those elements which make our everyday a fulfillment of God's plan and project. 

Christ, the fulfillment of all the promises so far, invites us to be the continued fulfillments of the salvation history that he brought to its perfection, on a daily basis by knowing, recognising and submitting to God and God's designs!

ஏப்ரல் 14: புயல் நடுவே ஒரு குரல்

நான் தான் அஞ்சாதீர்கள்! 

உயிர்த்த கிறிஸ்துவின் செய்தி ஏற்று சில காலத்திற்குள்ளாக ஒரு குழப்பம்... கிரேக்கர்கள் மதியிலுருந்து ஒரு குமுறல் எபிரேயர்களுக்கு எதிராக... உரிமைகள், தேவைகள், எங்கள் மக்கள், மற்றவர்கள்... என தொடக்க காலமுதலே திருச்சபையில் குழப்பங்கள் இருந்தேவருகின்றன. ஆனால் அதை அப்போஸ்தலர்கள் எதிர்கொண்ட விதம் தான் நம்மை வியக்க வைக்கிறன்றது! எந்த சலனமுமின்றி, நிதானமாய், சரியான கண்ணோட்டத்தோடு, ஒளிவு மறைவின்றி, சார்பு நிலைப்பாடுகளின்றி, உண்மையை உண்மையாய் எதிர்கொள்ளும் பாங்கு நமக்கு பல பாடங்களை கற்பிக்கின்றன. 

புயலும் இருளும் ஒன்றாய் வந்து மிரட்டும் சூழலில், இறந்துவிடுவோமா என்ற கலக்கத்தின் மத்தியில், எதோ ஒரு உருவம் அவர்களை தொடர்வதை கண்டு மிரளுகின்றனர் அப்போஸ்தலர்கள்... அஞ்சாதீர்கள்... நான் தான் என்று உயிர்த்த கிறிஸ்துவின் குரல் கேட்க, சாந்தமாய் கரைசேருகின்றனர்! இது அவர்களுக்கு ஒரு பாடமாய் அமைந்தது, பிற்காலத்தில் எழும் குழப்பங்களை எப்படி சந்திக்கவேண்டும் என்பதற்கு. 

நமக்கும் இது ஒரு பாடமே! குழப்பங்கள், கவலைகள், கேள்விகள், வேள்விகள் எத்தனை வந்தாலும், உயிர்த்த என் இறைவன் என்னோடு உள்ளார் என்பதை நான் ஆழமாக உணரும் போது எனக்குள் தோன்றும் அமைதியும், சாந்தமும் என்னை கரைசேர்த்துவிடும் என்பதே அப்பாடம். உண்மையில் உயிர்த்த கிறிஸ்துவின் மக்களென்றால், நம் வாழ்வில் வீசும் புயலின் மத்தியில் ஒரு குரல் நமக்கு கேட்க வேண்டும்; கேட்கும்! 

அஞ்சாதே... நான் தான். உன்னோடே இருக்கிறேன். அமைதியாய் எதிர்கொள், கரைகாணும் நேரம் வெகு தொலைவில் இல்லை!

Confusion and Crisis: BE CALM AND FEEL THE LORD

Saturday, 2nd week in Eastertide 

14th April, 2018: Acts 6: 1-6; Jn 6: 16-21

When we live and work together, we are sure to have misgivings and clash of opinions, unless we cease to think freely and forget our individuality. We see in the first reading today the earliest of misunderstandings and complaints that arose in the new born church! The way the apostles dealt with it, was so Christ-like.

When the sea was stirred with the storm that arose, the hearts of those in the boat were disturbed too, and Jesus walked up to them and said: It is I; do not be afraid! He assured them, the stirring will cause no damage, if you understand the Lord is with you. The storm will not upset the boat, until you know that it is the Lord who is in charge! 

When a complaint arose, the Apostles were not alarmed, they were not reacting to the complaint. They knew that it was a sign the Lord was giving them for their own growth. Confusions, complaints and contradictory opinions were instrumental moments through which the Lord effected a splendid consolidation in the Christian faith experience post resurrection. 

Today in parish communities, or in basic christian communities or in families or in Religious communities, how do we look at differences of opinions? Is there a true freedom of expression? Are we matured enough to look at these as experiences of growth? That requires a true mindset of faith - to realise the presence of the Lord at all times, even during moments of crisis and confusion.
