Revive your sense of belonging to God

Wednesday, 4th week in Lent: 14th Mar, 2018

Isa 49: 8-15; Jn 5: 17-30

My father is working and so I should be working too...these words of Jesus make the fellow Jews angry. They accuse Jesus of equating himself with the Father, with God! Jesus affirms it yet again and tells us too...you too are! You too are just like God, bearing the image and likeness of God, children of God, chosen ones of God - this is not a privilege but a responsibility. It is a task, a challenge to make God present to the world that constantly distances itself from God! But God's love never distances itself, it reaches out. It reaches out to every one, the whole world, the entire universe!

Does God love all in the same manner? Of course, God is never partial but what would love mean if it is the same with everyone, everywhere! God's love is specific says the Word today. God's love comes to respond to the need of each one proper to the void he or she experiences in life. 

A mother's expression of love to a hungry child is feeding it; her reaching out to a frightened child is to caress it reassuringly!  God's love is such, declares the Word today: even if that mother were to forsake, God would never forsake us! it takes special effort to respond to each one proper to their need, at times the needs of each persons vary, at times even clash one against the other! 

God alone knows the trick of reconciling them and making the right thing happen at the right time. After all, is it not true that, all things work together for good to them that love God, to those who are called according to God's purpose (cf Rom 8:28)? Let us revive our sense of belonging to God, our child like attachment to God and the world will soon be set right!

மார்ச் 14: அவர் கரங்களில்...

இறைவனுக்கு சொந்தமானவர்கள் என்பது பெருமையா?

என் தந்தை செயலாற்றுவதால் நானும் செயலாற்றுவேன் என்று இயேசு கூறும் அந்த வார்த்தைகள் அவரது சக யூதர்களை கோபப்படுத்தியது. நீ உன்னையே கடவுளுக்கு நிகரானவனாக அழைத்துக் கொள்கிறாய் என்று அவரை கடிந்துக் கொண்டார்கள். இயேசுவோ நீங்கள் சொல்வது தான் உண்மை, நானும் என் தந்தையும் ஒன்றே என்று கூறுவதோடு, நம்மை பார்த்தும் அதையே கூறுகிறார். உங்கள் விண்ணகத் தந்தையும் தாயுமான இறைவனின் பிள்ளைகள் நீங்கள், அவரது உருவையும் சாயலையும் தாங்கியவர்கள் நீங்கள், அவரை போன்றே வாழ அழைக்கப்பட்டவர்கள். அவருக்கே சொந்தமானவர்கள் - இது வெறும் பெருமை மட்டுமல்ல, பெரும் கடமையும் கூட!

இறைவனை மதியாது விலகி செல்லும் இன்றைய உலகில், இறைவனுக்கு சொந்தமானவர்களாய் வாழ்ந்து அந்த இறைவனின் அன்பை உலகம் உணருமாறு செய்ய வேண்டிய கடமை அது. உங்கள் சொல்லிலும் செயலிலும் இறைவனின் அன்பை முன்னிறுத்தி உங்களை சுற்றி உள்ள அனைவரும் அதை உண்மையாய் உணரும்படி செய்ய அழைக்கப்பட்டவர்கள் நீங்கள். இறைவனின் அன்பு அனைவருக்குமான அன்பு மட்டுமல்ல, ஒவ்வொருவருக்குமான அன்பு.

ஒரு தாய் தன குழந்தையை அன்பு செய்யும் போது அதை எப்படி வெளிப்படுத்துகிறாள்? தன் எல்லா குழந்தைகளுக்கும் ஒரே அன்பா? இல்லை, ஒவ்வொரு குழந்தைக்கும் தேவையான அன்பு. பசியென்று அழும் குழந்தைக்கு உணவாக வெளிப்படும் அன்பு, பயமென்று அழும் குழந்தைக்கு அரவணைப்பில் வெளிப்படும் அன்பு, ஏதோ ஒரு இழப்பினால் அழும் குழந்தைக்கு நானுள்ளவரை நீ எதையும் இழந்துவிடவில்லை என்று ஆறுதலாய் வெளிப்படும் அன்பு... இப்படி ஒருவரின் உண்மையான உள்ள உணர்வை தெரிந்து வெளிப்படும் அன்பே தாயின் அன்பு. அந்த தாயின் அன்பு அற்றுப்போனாலும், நான் உன்னை கைவிடுவதில்லை என்று கூறும் இறைவனின் அன்பு இன்னும் எத்தனை மடங்கு ஆழமானதாய் இருக்கும் என்று சற்று சிந்தித்து பார்ப்போமா!

அவர் கரங்களில் நாம் இருக்கிறோம் என்ற துணிவோடு, அவர் கரங்களில் நம் வாழ்வு இருக்கிறது என்ற மகிழ்வோடு, அவரது அன்பு நமக்கு என்றும் உள்ளது என்ற மனதிடத்தோடு... அவரது பணியை இவ்வுலகில் ஆற்ற நாம் துணிய கிறிஸ்து நம்மை அழைக்கிறார். நாம் எங்கிருந்தாலும், எதை செய்தாலும், அவர் கரங்களில் உள்ளோம் என்பதை மறவாது செயல்படுவோம்!

மார்ச் 13: நீரோடையாய் பயணிக்க... பாய்ந்தோட...

அருளின் நீரோடைகள்  நம்மை சுற்றி பாய்கின்றன! 

உயிரோட்டமுள்ள வாழ்வை குறிக்கும் அழகானதொரு உருவகத்தை நம்முன் வைக்கிறது இன்றைய இறைவார்த்தை: உயிரளிக்கும் நீரோடைகள்! இறைவனின் இல்லத்திலிருந்து பாய்ந்தோடும் நீரோடையை எசேக்கியேலும், அந்த உயிரளிக்கும் நீரோடையே கிறிஸ்துவாய் லூக்காவும் இன்று நம்மை ஆழ்ந்து தியானிக்க அழைக்கிறார்கள்... அருளின் நீரோடைகள் நம்மை சுற்றி பாய்ந்தோடுவதை நாம் உணர்ந்திருக்கிறோமா? 

முப்பத்தெட்டு ஆண்டுகளாய் அந்த நீருக்குள் இறங்கவேண்டும் என காத்திருந்தவருக்கு இயேசுவே சென்று நீ நலம் பெற விரும்புகிறாயா என்று கேட்டது, அவர் நீரோடைக்கு செல்வதற்கு பதிலாக நீரோடையே அவரிடம் வந்தது போல் இருந்திருக்கவேண்டும்!  ஆனால் நீரோடை பாய்ந்தோடுவது என்பது எப்போதுமே விரும்பத்தக்க ஒன்றாகவே இருக்கும் என்பது உறுதி அல்ல.  அதனால் தான் கிறிஸ்து அவரிடமே கேட்கிறார்: நீ நலம் பெற விரும்புகிறாயா? 

இதெல்லாம் ஒரு கேள்வியா என்று நாம் எண்ணலாம்! ஆனால் இது மிக தேவையான ஒரு கேள்வி தான்... நடக்க இயலாதவராக போவோர் வருவோரின் இரக்கத்திற்கு பாத்திரமாக இருப்பதே நல்லது என்று அம்மனிதன் நினைத்துவிட்டால்? அப்படி படுத்திருந்து பிறரின் ஈகையிலேயே வாழ்க்கை நடத்துவது தொல்லையற்றது என்று அவர் நினைத்துவிட்டால்? ஆகையால் தான் இயேசு அவரிடமே கேட்கிறார்...நீ நலமடைய விரும்புகிறாயா?

நமது வாழ்விலும், இறைவனின் குணமளிக்கும் நீரோடைகள் நம்மை சுற்றி ஓடிய வண்ணமே உள்ளன... அதில் இறங்கவோ, அவற்றினால் குணமடையவோ நாம் விரும்புகிறோமா என்பதே கேள்வி. ஆம் என்றால்... உன் படுக்கையை எடுத்துக்கொண்டு எழுந்து நட என்று அவரிடம் சொன்னதுபோல இறைவன் நம்மிடமும் கூறுவார் - அவர் கூறுவதை செய்ய நாம் தயாரா? நமது பழகிவிட்ட வாழ்க்கையில் சில மாற்றங்களை ஏற்படுத்த நாம் தயாரா? பிறரின் நிழலிலும், அடுத்தவரின் இரக்கத்திலும்,  பழிபோடுவதிலும், குற்றங்கூறுவதிலும் நமது வாழ்வு கடந்துவிடாமல், ஒவ்வொரு நாளும் புத்துணர்வோடும், புது முடிவுகளோடும், முழுமையை நோக்கி நீரோடையாய் பயணிக்க பாய்ந்தோட நாம் தயாரா?

Revive your willingness to flow on!

Tuesday, 4th week in Lent: 13th Mar, 2018
Ezek 47:1-3,9-12; Lk 5: 1-3a,5-6

We have a wonderful imagery today to ponder over: the flowing water that enlivens! Ezekiel speaks of it and Luke presents it; Ezekiel underlines the presence of the flowing water by the Temple while Luke points out the very presence of Christ as the life giving spring! 

For that man who had been waiting for years to get into that life giving water, the fact that Jesus approached him was like the waters came to him, instead of he going to the waters. But it is not all that comfortable, when the waters really flow! That is why Jesus asks him that question: do you want to be well again? 

We may think it is a dumb question to ask - but it matters! What if the man was comfortable drawing pity from the others? What if the man gained much more than what he could have with his limbs alright? Hence, the need for Jesus to ask him, if he really wanted to be healed! It is our choice to be healed, to be well, to be wholesome!

We may blame people around, the situation around, the events and experiences and remain in self pity! That will never lead us to wellness, health or wholeness. If we really want to live our life to the full, we need to receive the flowing grace willingly. It might require of us certain changes...which may not be comfortable - the man was asked to pick up his mat and walk..all this while people were carrying him around! Are we prepared for the inconveniences of grace?

The Lord reaches out to us, flows into our lives to enliven us and Jesus invites us to become the waters that enliven people around us, that we reach out to others and flow into their lives, enlivening them! Let us revive our willingness to be healed, the willingness to flow on!

மார்ச் 12: நம்பிக்கையோடு திரும்பி நட

ஒளியை நோக்கி, மகிழ்ச்சியை நோக்கி, திரும்பி நட 

நேற்றைய தினம் தவக்காலத்தின் நான்காம் ஞாயிறன்று இறைவார்த்தை நம்மை மகிழ்ந்து களிக்கூற அழைத்திருந்தது... நாம் பாவிகளாய் இருந்தாலும், தவறியவர்களாய் தடமாறுகிறவர்களாய் இருந்தாலும், இறைவன் நமது தவறுகளை கணக்கில் கொள்வதில்லை, அன்புடன் நம்மை தம் பிள்ளைகளாகவே நேசிக்கிறார்! இதைவிட நாம் மகிழ்ந்து களிக்கூற வேறு காரணங்கள் நமக்கு தேவையா என்ன! அதே அழைப்பு இவ்வார தொடக்கத்திலும் தொடர்கிறது!

துக்கத்திலிருந்து சந்தோஷத்திற்கு, துன்பத்திலிருந்து இன்பத்திற்கு, இருளிலிருந்து ஒளிக்கு, வழியறியா நிலையிலிருந்து ஒளிமிகு வாழ்விற்கு இறைவன் நம்மை அழைக்கிறார் - அந்த அழைப்பை ஏற்க நாம் தயாரா? நம்மில் பலர் துன்பங்களோடே, துக்கங்களோடே, மனதில் புலம்பல்களோடே வாழ பழகிவிட்டிருக்கிறோம்! அங்கிருந்து புறப்படுவது என்பதே நமக்கு அரிதாய் இருக்க மகிழ்ச்சியை நோக்கி, ஒளியை நோக்கி நாம் எங்கு பயணிக்க போகிறோம்?

உண்மையிலேயே இப்பயணத்தின் பெரும்பகுதி பயணிக்க எடுக்கும் முடிவில் தான் இருக்கிறது...இன்றைய நற்செய்தியில் நாம் காணும் அந்த அரச அலுவலரைப்போல நாம் இறைவனின் குரல் கேட்டவுடனேயே முடிவெடுத்து திரும்பி பயணிக்க தொடங்க வேண்டும் என்று இறைவார்த்தை நமக்கு பணிக்கிறது. நீ செல், உனது மகன் வாழ்வான் என்று கிறிஸ்து கூறியவுடன், திரும்பி செல்லும் அந்த நம்பிக்கை - அதுவே அவரது அசீர்மிகு வாழ்வுக்கு அடிக்கல் ஆனது. 

சில வேளைகளில் சிலர் தங்கள் வாழ்வின் துன்பங்களை பகிர வரும்போது, அவர்கள் செய்யவேண்டியது என்று எதை நாம் கூறினாலும் அதற்கு எதிராய் ஏதாவது ஒன்றை கூற அவர்கள் தயாராகவே இருப்பார்கள்; அவர்களது சிக்கல்களிலிருந்து வெளியேற நாம் கூறும் எந்த ஒரு வழியும் அவர்களுக்கு உதவக்கூடியதாகவே தோன்றாது! அவர்கள் பகிரும் விதத்திலிருந்தே அவர்கள் அந்த சிக்கலில் இருந்து வெளிப்படும் சிந்தனையிலேயே இல்லை என்பது தெள்ளத்தெளிவாக நமக்கு புரிந்துவிடும்!

இவர்களை பார்த்தே இறைவன் இன்று கூறுகிறார்... நம்பிக்கையோடு திரும்பி நட... உன் வாழ்வில் ஓளி பிறக்கும், உன் துன்பங்கள் இன்பங்களாய் மாறும், உன் சோகங்கள் மகிழ்ச்சியாய் மலரும், உன் சோதனைகள் சாதனைகளாய் மிளிரும்... நம்பிக்கையோடு திரும்பி நட. இறைவனை, இறைவனின் வார்த்தையை மனதில் கொண்டு நம்பிக்கையோடு திரும்பி நட!

Revive your Journey from sadness to gladness

Monday, 4th week in Lent: 12th Mar, 2018

Is 65:17-21; Jn 4: 43-54

Yesterday we celebrated the fourth sunday in Lent which had the call to Rejoice! Yes we are sinful, we have fallen and failed, we are unworthy but inspite of that the Lord loves us and that is a great reason to Rejoice. The call continues into the week!

From sadness to gladness is the journey the Lord invites us to. It is surprising that many a persons find it a journey either unnecessary or unrealistic. They feel they can remain with sadness and that they are destined to remain with such sadnesses. They don't wish to embark upon that journey so easily. 

Interestingly, a major part of  the journey consists in making the decision to turn and walk,  as did the royal official in the Gospel account today. How long are we going to stand staring at problems and confusions and misgivings and misunderstandings in life?  

At times, there are people who share their problems. From the very sharing of the problems we can sense the fact that they have not even thought of leaving those problems and walking ahead - every suggestion you give meets with multiple reasons why it is not workable; every challenge you pose against the problem is judges as an insensitive approach to the person! If you have to walk out of your problems, first you have to decided to stop, turn and walk away from it!

The Lord tells us today: just believe and turn and walk towards the peace and serenity that I offer. Are we ready to set off with faith and hope,  on that journey: from sadness to gladness!

THE IGNITING LOVE

Re-ignite the world

4th Sunday of Lent: 11th March, 2018

2 Chr 36: 14-16, 19-23; Eph 2: 4-10; Jn 3: 14-21

For God so loved the world that God gave God's only Son, that everyone who believes in him might have eternal life (Jn 3:16)... the Word presents in this verse, the crux of the mystery of God's love! St. Paul would elaborate on this when he says, "God who did not spare God's own son, will not withhold anything from us!" (Cf. Rom 8:32). God's love for us has been so undeservedly deep! Have we ever been so worthy as to say, we deserved all the love that God holds out to us?

This undeservedly Deep Love of God, can be called an Igniting Love! It is an igniting love because God loves us, that we may love each other! The Lord does not only burn with love for us, but ignites us with that love that we may burn in turn. We will do so only when we realise that this Igniting love of God is a gift, a grace and a gamble!

A Gift, because I have not worked for it, I have not merited it, I have not earned it! It is given to me! It is poured into my heart. At times when we love, we expect that love in return; we are disappointed and discouraged when we do not get it in return atleast to some measure. But look at God: in the first reading we have the situation where it is said, people added infidelity to infidelity, but still God raises up a situation where people feel the amazing love of God, walking back to their freedom.

A Grace, because it is totally unexpected, illogical and beyond all rational calculations. As St. Paul expresses in the second reading, 'even when we were dead,  God raised us up to be with God's son, in eternal life...by grace we have been saved' (cf. Eph 2:5). I am reminded of an experience I had in the earliest year of my formation to priesthood, my novitiate days. During one of the morning meditations, I looked out of the window and saw a big tree cut down and the mighty bark lying dry and dead. Those were a bit trying days for me and I said to myself, I am lying around like that bark, so lifeless! Merely a fortnight later, through the same window and during a similar meditation hour, I looked out and the same bark caught my eye. What a surprise, in the dry bark from nowhere, a couple of tender leaves had sprouted! After all, I said, the Lord is able to raise a life from the lifeless! Elsewhere St. Paul would say, 'while we were still weak, Christ died for us' (cf Rom 5:6). It is totally an unexpected doing of the Lord, that I am loved! That love is indeed a grace!

A Gamble, because it is totally unconditional. God loved me not expecting that I will repay that love, not even knowing if I would choose to remain worthy of such deep love. The light is here, and it is upto us to choose the light. Not just choose the light, but be lighted up by that light... to be ignited by the love that is personified! The salvation is near and it is upto me to subscribe to it for myself. God dares take a gamble on me, God invests all the love that God has for me, knowing well the risk involved: that I may totally turn against God. In his Lenten message Pope Francis has given us a tremendous task: to revive love, to re-ignite this world with love, not to let love grow cold! But God's love will never be surprised even if it is rejected,  crushed and wounded. So deep is that love,  so incredibly deep! 

How deeply does God wish that we be truly ignited by the Love of God and Ignite this world with the same love! 

மார்ச் 10: அவரது மனம் அறிவோம்!

இறைவனை அறிவோம், அவருக்கு ஏற்புடையவராவோம்! 

அறிவடைவோமாக, ஆண்டவரை பற்றி அறிய முனைந்திடுவோமாக என்று அழைக்கிறது இன்றைய வார்த்தை. பலிகளை அல்ல இரக்கத்தையே விரும்புகிறேன் என்று கூறும் இறைவனின் மனதை அறிய நாம் அழைக்கப் படுகிறோம்! நான் செய்யும் நற்செயல்களும் எனது பலிகளும் தியாகங்களும் ஒருவேளை என் அகந்தையை கூட்டுமெனில் அது இறைவனை அடைய அல்ல அவரை விட்டு விலகிப்போகவே வழிவகுக்கும் என்று நான் உணரவேண்டும். 

'நான்' என்ற அகந்தையும், என்னைவிட யாரும் சிறந்துவிட முடியாது என்ற சிந்தனையும், நான் தான் இறைவனுக்கு நெருக்கமாய் இருக்கிறேன் மற்றவர் அனைவரும் எனக்கு கீழ் தான் உள்ளார்கள் என்றெல்லாம் நான் நினைத்தேன் என்றால், இறைவனை விட்டு வெகு தொலைவில் நான் இருக்கிறேன் என்பதை நான் உணர வேண்டும்!

இறைவனை போற்றுகிறேன் என்று சொல்லிக்கொண்டு யாரொருவர் தனது சகோதர சகோதரிகளை சிறுமை படுத்துகிறாரோ, மதியாதிருக்கிறாரோ, அவர் இறைவனை அறியாதிருக்கிறார் என்பதை தெள்ளத்தெளிவாக எடுத்து சொல்லுகிறது இன்றைய வார்த்தை! கிறிஸ்தவ நம்பிக்கைகுள்ளே சாதியம் என்னும் பேய்த்தன்மை, கிறிஸ்தவ வாழ்க்கைகுள்ளே அடுத்தவரை ஏய்த்து பிழைக்கும் அரசியல் தன்மை, என் ஆதாயத்திற்காக அடுத்தவரின் பெயரை கெடுக்கும் போக்குகள்... இவையெல்லாம் இறைவனை அறியாதவர்கள் செய்யும் செயல்கள். 

தன்னை உண்மையாக அறிய இறைவன் நம்மை அழைக்கிறார்... உண்மை அன்பு எங்கு இருக்கிறதோ, உண்மையான மனித நேயம் எங்கு இருக்கிறதோ, ஒருவர் மற்றவர் மீதான உண்மையான மதிப்பும் மரியாதையும் எங்கு இருக்கிறதோ, அங்கே இறைவன் இருக்கிறார், இறைவனுக்கு ஏற்புடையோர் வாழுகின்றனர். 

இறைவனை அறிய முற்படுவோம்... வெறும் வெளித்தோற்றங்களில் அல்ல, உள்ளார்ந்த உணர்வில் இறைவனை அறிய முற்படுவோம். இறைவனை உண்மையாய் அறிந்தால் மட்டுமே அவருக்கு ஏற்புடையோராய் நம்மால் வாழ முடியும் என்பதை உணர்ந்துகொள்வோம்!

RevivaLent 2018 - #25

Revive your faithfulness to God

Saturday, 3rd week in Lent: 10th, Mar 2018
Hos 6: 1-6; Lk 18: 9-14

What I want is love, not sacrifice- says the Word. Sacrifices, after all,  are for the sake of humbling ourselves in front of the Lord that we may grow closer and closer to the Lord. If the same sacrifice puffs up my ego and takes me to a higher plane, making me think of myself as being better than my brothers and sisters and from there, look down on them,  then that sacrifice not only fails to serve its purpose but takes me away from the Lord.

The Lord invites us to understand that our wish and effort to remain faithful to the Lord who has called us,  is much better than all sacrifices. Remaining faithful to that call would mean, becoming more and more like God. ... loving, compassionate and humble in our spirit... not self-glorifying, self-righteous and self-magnifying!

Look at the politicians who claim to serve the society and the people... majority of them are from a higher economic class or they reach there as soon as their career picks up. There is really no "service" rendered to people, rather they look at themselves as VIPs, as celebrities, almost as royals! Where is the so-called  purpose that was said for having entered that way of life? 

Easy to point a finger at them, but before doing that, let us take a look at our own life! When we begin to understand that we are people of God - is it for judging the other? Is it for telling the other that he or she is not saved, or is not worthy of being called People of God? 

The more humble I become the more Godly I am; the more I serve the other the more divine I shall be; the more sincere I am in my respect for the other, the more acceptable I become in the eyes of the Lord! Let us strive to be justified in the eyes of the Lord; not merely in the eyes of the world. Let us revive our desire to be faithful to God and God alone!

மார்ச் 9: இறையாட்சியை நெருங்கி வா!

இறைவனையும் இறையாட்சியையும் நெருங்க ஒரே வழி

உமது ஆட்சி வருக என்று நாம் செபிக்க கற்றுக்கொண்டுள்ளோம். அந்த ஆட்சி வர வேண்டுமென்றால் வெறும் ஆசையும் செபமும் போதாது, நம் வாழ்வு அதற்கேற்றாற்போல் மாற வேண்டும் என இன்று இறைவார்த்தை நம்மை அழைக்கின்றது. தன்னலத்திலும் சுகவிருப்பிலும் நெடுந்தூரம் தன்னையே இழந்து நிற்கின்ற மனிதத்தை பார்த்து இறைவன் இன்று, "திரும்பி வா" என்று அழைக்கிறார். ஆம்... திரும்பி வா! இறையாட்சியை நெருங்கி வா... அதற்கு ஒரே வழி தான் உண்டு.

உண்மையான உறவுகளை வளர்த்துக்கொள்... உனக்கு ஆதாயமான உறவுகள் அல்ல, உன் தேவைகளை நிறைவேற்றும் உறவுகள் அல்ல, உண்மையோடு பகிர்ந்துகொள்ளப்படும் உறவுகளை வளர்த்துக்கொள். 

உன்னையும் உனக்குள்ளது அனைத்தையும் படைத்தவரோடு உண்மையான உறவை வளர்த்துக்கொள். பூக்கள் தோறும் தேனை தேடும் வண்டு போல எல்லா இடத்திலும் தேடிவிட்டு வேறு வழியே இன்றி இறைவனை நாடும் அவலத்தை மேற்கொள்ளாதே! உண்மையான உறவு, நம்பிக்கையில் நிலைபெறும் உறவு, எதையும் எதிர்பார்க்காத உறவு ஒன்றை இறைவனோடு வளர்த்துக்கொள்.
