Lord that I may see!

Saturday, 26th week in Ordinary time

October 6, 2018: Job 42:1-3,5-6,12-17; Lk 10:17-24

Job lived on to see his children and the children of his children, upto the fourth generation, says the first reading. Happy the eyes that see what you see, exclaims Jesus in the Gospel to the disciples, indicating to them how blessed they were! The message of the Word today is: what we see is not merely what we see, but what we are given to see!

As Job observes so clearly what he came to see (now that I have seen you with my own eyes), we are given to see certain things in life which we would never see otherwise. It is a gift we need to ask from the Lord to see - to see what we need to see, to see what would give us the true repentance of heart, to see that which will offer us the fullness of the sense of our life, to see that which will clarify to us the true vocation we have from God.

Jesus explains it further. Not every one can see, but those who are destined to see, those to whom God reveals it - the children, the humble, the obedient, the gentle, the true children of God - only they would be able to see what they have to see. Not that it is not there, but the aggressive, the haughty and the self-centered will never get to see it.

At times I wish the people who think of themselves too high, who look down on others, who think they can manipulate everything for their good, who take people for granted and oppress others without conscience, get to see truly what reality is and what their destiny would be! However, it doesn't depend on our wish, but God's will to reveal.

The call for us is, to be attentive to what God wants us to see, to see what God reveals to us and to be able to see what would give us the right sense of our life, here and now. Let our prayer today be, 'Lord, that I may see!'

நான் காணும்படி செய்யும்!

அக்டோபர் 6, 2018: யோபு 42: 1-3,5-6,12-17; லூக் 10:17-24

யோபு தன் பிள்ளைகளையும் பிள்ளைகளின் பிள்ளைகளையும் நான்காம் தலைமுறைவரை கண்டார் என்று முதல் வாசகம் நமக்கு தெரிவிக்கிறது. நீங்கள் காண்பவற்றை காண்பவர்கள் பேறுபெற்றோர் என்று கிறிஸ்து தன் சீடர்கள் எவ்வளவு பேறுபெற்றவர்கள் என்பதை நற்செய்தியில்  தெளிவுபடுத்துகிறார். இன்றைய வார்த்தை நமக்கு தரும் பாடம் இதுவே: நாம் காண்பவை நாம் காண்பவை மட்டுமல்ல, நாம் காண நமக்கு கொடுக்கப்பட்டவை என்பதை நாம் உணரவேண்டும் என்பதே. 

நான் உம்மை கண்கூடாக காண்கின்றேன் என்று யோபு கூறும்போது, அதுவரை அவர் காண தவறியதை இறைவன் அவருக்கு வெளிப்படுத்தியதை நம்மோடு பகிர்ந்துகொள்கின்றார்.  நாம் இறைவனிடம் கேட்கக்கூடிய வரம் இதுவே, நாம் காணாமலே விட்டுவிடும் பலவற்றை காணும் பேற்றை இறைவன் தரவேண்டும் என்று கேட்போம் - அவர் நாம் காணவேண்டும் என்று விரும்புவதை, நம் வாழ்க்கையை முற்றிலுமாய் மாற்றியமைக்க கூடியவற்றை, நம் வாழ்க்கையின் உண்மை பொருளை முழுமையாய் நாம் உணரசெய்வனவற்றை நாம் காண நமக்கு வரம் தர வேண்டுவோம். 

பல வேளைகளில் நான் நினைத்தது உண்டு. மற்றவரை துன்புறுத்தும் மரத்துப்போன இதயம் உள்ளவர்கள், தான் என்ற அகந்தையோடு அடுத்தவரை அலட்சியப்படுத்துபவர்கள், தன்னல போக்கோடு யாரையும் பற்றி கவலைப்படாமல் தான் மட்டுமே வாழ சிந்திப்பவர்கள், தன் வசதிக்காகவும் வாய்ப்பிற்காகவும் யாருக்கும் எதுவும் செய்ய துணிபவர்கள் என்று இதுபோன்ற மனிதர்கள் உண்மையில் தாங்கள் யார், தங்களுக்கு என்ன நேரப்போகிறது, தாங்கள் எப்படிப்பட்டவர்கள் என்பதை கண்ணெதிரே கண்டால் எப்படியிருக்கும் என்று. ஆனால் அதை வெளிப்படுத்துவது இறைவன் அல்லவா, நாம் சிந்தித்து என்ன பயன்!

ஆம் அனைவரும் அனைத்தையும் காண்பது கிடையாது. இறைவன் யார் எதை காணவேண்டும் என்று சித்தமாயிருக்கிறாரோ அவர்களே காண முடிகிறது. குழந்தைகளுக்கும், எளியோருக்கும், தாழ்சியுள்ளோருக்கும், கீழ்படிவோருக்கும், கனிவுள்ளோருக்கும், உண்மையுள்ளோருக்கும் மட்டுமே கடவுள் தன்னையே வெளிப்படுத்துகிறார்; காணச்செய்கிறார். இன்று நமது செபமும் இப்படியே அமையட்டும்: இறைவா, நீர் விரும்புவதை, நீர் திட்டமிட்டுள்ளதை, உம்பால் என்னை ஈர்க்கக்கூடியதை, என் வாழ்விற்கு பொருள் தரக்கூடியதை, நீர் தரும் அமைதியையும் உளநிறைவையும் தரக்கூடியதை நான் காணும்படி செய்யும்! ஆமென்.

Grasping the sense of God's plan

5th October, 2018: Job 38: 1, 12-21, 40: 3-5; Lk 10: 13-16

'From Knowledge to Ignorance' is one of the famous titles from one of the Spiritual gurus of India. It may sound a bit odd but there is deep truth in the perspective and that is the message of the readings today. We run the risk of getting too used to the great things that God keeps doing for us. At times, due to some setbacks that we could possibly experience, or due to some troublesome moments, we tend to forget all that has gone by so well.

I have indeed noticed in day to day relationships too: when there is a misunderstanding or a trouble to be faced, the individuals involved are so oblivious of the great moments that they have shared together. The present trouble becomes so occupying that the words that they use, the sentiments they reveal and the decisions that they make are so conditioned by that passing trouble, however trying it could be at the moment. There is a bigger picture to everything that happens and that is, God's eternal plan!

In the first reading, God challenges the attitude of questioning the eternal designs of God. We lack the Wisdom to understand the plans of God in all its details but with the little that we are capable of, we pretend to be masters of everything! It is important that we realise our limitedness inspite of our great acomplishments, that we acknowledge the wisdom in God's plan inspite of our nothingness. 

If our eyes are truly open to what is happening around, if our ears  are genuinely open to the Words that come from above, if our hearts are absolutely open to the promptings of the Spirit of the Lord, then we would open our lives to the Lord and we would grasp the profound sense of the eternal plan of God.

இறைசித்தத்திற்கு சரணாவோம்; புதுமைகள் காண்போம்!

அக்டோபர் 5, 2018 - யோபு 38: 1, 12-21, 40; லூக் 10: 13-16

கடவுள் நமக்காக செய்யும் அரும்பெரும் செயல்களை நாம் பொதுவாக காண்பதே இல்லை, கண்டாலும் அதன் அருமையை நாம் உணர்வதே இல்லை. பெரிய நிகழ்வுகள், உயிர் காக்கும் அனுபவங்கள், வாழ்க்கையை புரட்டி போட்ட நிகழ்வுகள் என்று சிலவற்றை மட்டுமே நாம் நினைவில் வைத்துக் கொள்ள முன் வருகிறோமே தவிர அன்றாடம் நடக்கும் புதுமைகள், அன்றாடம் நமக்கு கிடைக்கும் பல கொடைகள், சத்தமின்றி நிகழும் சாதாரண அனுபவங்களிலெல்லாம் இறைவன் நம்மை எப்படியெல்லாம் வழி நடத்துகிறார் என்பதை நாம் காண தவறிவிடுகிறோம். இதனால் தான் ஒரு பிரச்சனையோ துன்பமோ வரும் போது அதுவரை நாம் அனுபவித்த எந்த ஆசீரையும் மனத்திற்கொள்ளாமல் புலம்ப தொடங்கிவிடுகிறோம். 

மனிதர்களுக்கு இடையேயான அன்றாட உறவுகளிலும் இந்த அனுபவத்தை நான் கண்டதுண்டு... ஒரு மனத்தாங்களோ புரிதலின்மையோ வந்துவிட்டால் தொடக்க காலத்திலிருந்தே எதிரிகளை போல சண்டையிட்டுக்கொள்ளும் இருவர், தாங்கள் பகிர்ந்துகொண்ட அழகான தருணங்களை நினைத்து பார்ப்பதே இல்லை. அதை நினைத்துக்கொண்டாலே  பாதிக்கும் மேலான பிரச்சனைகள் தீர்ந்துவிடும் என்பதே உண்மை. 

இறைவனோடு நமது உறவிலும் அவ்வாறே, நாம் ஒரு சோதனைக்குரிய தருணத்தை தாண்டி செல்லும் போது, வலுவிழக்கச்செய்யும் நேரத்தை கடந்துசெல்லும்போது, நமது வாழ்வின் அருமையான நேரங்களை, இறைவனோடு நாம் அனுபவித்த அற்புதங்களை நினைத்துக்கொண்டோமேயானால், அந்த நேரத்திற்கான ஒளி பிறக்கும். குறுகிய கண்ணோக்கோடு, புரிதலற்ற மனதோடு இறைவனை குறை சொல்வதும், அவரது சித்தத்தை எதிர்த்து சிந்திப்பதும், நமது அறிவீனத்தையே காட்டுகிறது என்று யோபு தனது அனுபவத்திலிருந்து நம்மை உணரச்செய்கிறார்.

இறைவன் நமக்கு செய்த நன்மைகள், அவர் நமக்கு காட்டிய வழிகள், நமது நலனுக்காக அவர் செய்த பெரும் செயல்கள், நாம் அவரிடமிருந்து பெற்றுக்கொண்ட ஆசீர்வாதங்கள் என இவற்றையெல்லாம் நாம் மனதிற்கொண்டு வாழும் போது நமது வாழ்வு இறைசித்தம் என்னும் பரந்த எல்லைக்குள் தெளிவு பெறுகிறது. இல்லையேல் நான், எனது எண்ணம், எனது திட்டங்கள் என்ற குறுகிய வட்டத்திற்குள் சிக்கி திணறுகிறது.

The Gift of Christ: Peace

Celebrating the Apostle of Peace, St. Francis of Assisi

October 4, 2018: Job 19: 21-27; Lk 10: 1-12

Francis of Assisi is considered a man who managed the maximum resemblance to Christ in his life, not so much due to the marks of the stigmata that he received from the Lord, but more due to the gift of Christ that he offered the world all his life - that is Peace. When you enter a house, greet them: Peace be with you, instructs Jesus in the Gospel today. 

Especially today, with the rising fanaticism around the world, we are called to be truly instruments of peace that comes from the self emptying Christ. Don't think I am referring only to the fanatic terrorists who are threatening the peace of the world, those who are threatening to destroy the Church from outside but more to the fanatics in the garb of Christians, people who are insisting on rules and rubrics, legalities and orthodoxy, the ego and hierarchy, to such an extent that mercy and understanding, dialogue and compassion find no place within the practice of faith and religion. People are thrown into confusion and frustration more by these than by those from outside!  

Francis came at a time when the  Church was wounded due to various spiritual calamities within the Church in the 10th and the 11th century and he treated those wounds with the compassion of the Lord, the humility of the Son of God and the peace of the Prince of Peace. He showed us that the marks of Christ that all of us can bear in our life, are exactly these: to be instruments of peace, through love, pardon, faith, hope, light, joy, consolation and new life. Today, as Pope Francis says, the Church is somewhat in a similar situation beaten and bruised from within and from without, however the accuser, the avenger is ruthlessly rampant against the Church.

May St. Francis assist us to understand the difference between true holiness and self righteousness, the distance between love and legalism and the need to move from being Christians to becoming Christ ourselves! Let us be true instruments of Peace, the true gift of Christ.

அமைதி தரும் அமைதி

புனித பிரான்சிஸ்கு அசிசியார் நினைவு 

அக்டோபர் 4, 2018: யோபு 19:21-27; லூக் 10: 1-12

வரலாற்றிலே கிறிஸ்துவை மிக நெருக்கமாய் பிரதிபலித்தவர்களில் முதன்மையான புனிதர் தூய பிரான்சிஸ்கு அசிசியார் என்பார்கள். கிறிஸ்துவின் ஐந்து காயங்களை இவர் பெற்றிருந்த காரணத்தினால் மட்டுமல்ல, மாறாக கிறிஸ்து மட்டுமே தரக்கூடிய மாபெரும் கொடையான உண்மையான அமைதியை இவர் தன் வாழ்நாள் முழுதும் உலகிற்கு அறிவுறுத்தியமையாலே. நீங்கள் எந்த வீட்டிற்குள் சென்றாலும், 'இந்த வீட்டிற்கு அமைதி உண்டாகுக' என்று கூறுங்கள், என்று கிறிஸ்து தன் திருத்தூதர்களிடம் கூறுவதை நாம் இன்றைய நற்செய்தியில் காண்கின்றோம். 

சிறப்பாக அடிப்படைவாதமும் தீவிரவாதமும் கோலோச்சிவரும் இந்த நாட்களிலே, வெறும் அரசியல் அல்லது சமய தீவிரவாதம் அல்ல, ஆனால் எல்லா நிலைகளிலும், தரப்பிலும், சூழலிலும் நாம் காண்கின்ற அடிப்படைவாத  பிரிவினைவாத சுயநலவாத ஆற்றல்களை நாம் எதிர்கொள்ள வேண்டியுள்ளது. அன்று புனித பிரான்சிஸ் பத்தாம் பதினோறாம் நூற்றாண்டில் வந்தபோது இருந்தது போலவே, இன்று திருச்சபை பல சோதனைகளை, சவால்களை, காயங்களை, இடறல்களை, இழுக்குகளை எதிர்கொண்டவண்ணமே இருக்கிறது. என்ன செய்யப்போகிறோம்? கசப்போடும், பழிவாங்கும் எண்ணத்தோடும், வஞ்சம் தீற்கும் உள்ளத்தோடும் செயல்பட போகிறோமா? அல்லது கிறிஸ்துவை போன்று நம்பிக்கை தரும் ஆழ்ந்த அமைதியில் உண்மையை சந்திக்கப்போகிறோமா? அது நம் கைகளிலேயே உள்ளது என்கிறார் திருத்தந்தை பிரான்சிஸ்.

இந்த உலகை, தன் மக்களாகிய நம்மை தேடி வந்த அமைதியாம் இறையேசு தரும் அமைதியை நம் உள்ளத்தின் ஆழத்தில் உணர்வோம்; அமைதி தரும் அதே அமைதியை உலகோடு பகிர்வோம் , அமைதியின் கருவிகளாவோம்.

Man Proposes, God Disposes - Is it true?!!!

October 3, 2018: Job 9: 1-12, 14-16; Lk 9: 57-62 

Lord's ways are unique and the best thing that can happen to us is God's plan. Job today explains how a radical surrender into the hands of God is the best way or the only sound way of living human life. Man proposes; God disposes - we have heard this often. Don't you think it is unfair to state it that way, because it is God who is the Master; God proposes! The best thing for us is to accept that proposal, without minding the momentary inconvenience it may cause.

At times we act too smart, questioning God and suggesting improvements to God's ways! Job makes it clear today, how foolish we seem when we try that on our part. The best thing that can happen to us is what God has planned for us - all that we need to do is dispose ourselves to what God proposes!

We see a collection of episodes in the Gospel today, which illustrate this truth. What we are called to do is not great work, but God's work. It is the Lord who created us and it is the Lord who commissions us! At times we think we are the masters of the things that we are involved in, but it is the Lord who is using us and if only we become aware of it, great will be our happiness! Job's life and Christ's demands to his disciples: these are just different ways of saying the same thing: be attentive when God proposes and that is the best thing that can happen to you!

உண்மையறிந்தால், நீ உண்மையறிந்தால்...

அக்டோபர் 3, 2018: யோபு 9:1-12,14-16; லூக் 9: 57-62 

இறைவனின் வழிகளோ வியப்பானவை, நமது புரிதலுக்கு அப்பாற்பட்டவை. ஆனால் நம் வாழ்வில் நமக்கு நேரக்கூடியவற்றில் சிறந்தவை அவையே! தன் வாழ்வின் கண்ணோட்டத்தின் வழியாய் யோபு நமக்கு இன்று இந்த அழகானதொரு பாடத்தை தருகின்றார். இறைவனின் சித்தத்திற்கும் அவரது திட்டத்திற்கும் சரணாவதை காட்டிலும் மேலானதொரு வாழ்வியல் வேறு எதுவும் இருக்க முடியாது என்பதை தனது எடுத்துக்காட்டின் வழியாய் நமக்கு எண்பிக்கிறார். 

நாம் ஒன்று நினைக்க இறைவன் ஒன்று நினைக்கிறார், என்று நமது வழக்கத்தில் சொல்வதுண்டு...ஆனால், இது எவ்வளவு தவறானது என்பதை நாம் அறிந்திருக்கிறோமா? நமது வாழ்வு குறித்தோ நமது இலக்குகள் குறித்தோ சிந்திக்க நாம் யார்? நாம் நினைத்தா இவ்வுலகிற்கு வந்து பிறந்தோம்? நாம் முடிவு செய்தா இவ்வுலகை விட்டு செல்லவிருக்கிறோம்? நம்மை படைத்தவருக்கு தெரிவதை காட்டிலுமா நமக்கு நம்மையே தெரிந்துவிட போகிறது? இது உண்மையெனில், அவரது சித்தமும் திட்டமும் அல்லவா உண்மை நிறைவை நமக்கு தர இயலும்! இதை நாம் உணர்ந்துவிட்டால் நமது வாழ்க்கை முறையே மாறிவிடும், தெளிவு பெறும்.  

இதை அறியாதபோதே, நாம் அனைத்தும் தெரிந்தவர்கள் போல இறைவனுக்கு அறிவுரை கூற விழைகிறோம், அவரது திட்டங்களில் சிலவற்றை மாற்றி அமைக்க அவரிடமே ஆலோசனை தருகிறோம்... நமக்கு எது நன்மை என்று அவருக்கு தெரியாதா? அவரது சித்தமும் திட்டமுமே நமது வாழ்வில் நடக்க கூடியவற்றில் சிறந்தவையாகும்.

இன்றைய நற்செய்தியில் நாம் காண்பதும் இதுவே! பின்தொடர விரும்பும் ஒருவரை வேண்டாம் என்கிறார், தாமதிக்கும் ஒருவரை உடனே பின்செல் என்கிறார்... காரணம் என்ன - அது அவருக்கு மட்டுமே தெரியும். நமக்கென ஒரு திட்டத்தை அவர் வகுத்திருக்கிறார், அதன் படி நமது வாழ்வு அமையும் போது அது நிறைவு காண்கிறது, இல்லையெனில் ஏதோ ஒன்று தொக்கியே நிற்கின்றது. இந்த உண்மையறிந்தால், நீ இந்த உண்மையை அறிந்துவிட்டாயானால், உன் மனம் தெளிவு பெறும், உன் உள்ளம் அமைதி பெறும், உன் வாழ்வு நிறைவு பெறும்!

உடனிருக்கும் இறைவன்

கண்டுகொள்வோம் கொண்டாடுவோம்

அக்டோபர் 2: யோபு 3:1-3,11-17,20-23; மத் 18:1-5,10

காவல் தூதர்களின் நினைவு என்பது இறைவனின் உடனிருப்பை காண, உணர, கொண்டாட ஒரு அழைப்பாகும். நம் வாழ்வின் ஒவ்வொரு தருணத்திலும் நம்மை இறைவன் காண்கிறார், காக்கிறார், கரம் பிடித்து வழிநடத்துகிறார். நம் இறைவன் இந்த உலகம் முடியும் மட்டும் நம்மை விட்டு விலகுவதுமில்லை, கை விடுவதுமில்லை என்று நமக்கு வாக்களித்த இறைவன், உடனிருக்கும் இறைவன், தொடர்ந்து வரும் இறைவன். 

நமது கத்தோலிக்க பாரம்பரியத்தில் நமக்கு கற்று தரப்படும் பாடங்களில் முதலானவைகளில் ஒன்று நமது காவல் தூதர்களை பற்றிய நம்பிக்கையாகும். தனிப்பட்ட முறையில் இது குறித்து நான் கேட்டபோதெல்லாம் எனக்குள்ளாக ஒரு குழந்தையை போன்ற மனநிலை உருவாவதை நான் உணர்ந்திருக்கிறேன். உண்மை தான்... இந்த குழந்தையின் மனநிலை நம்மில் இல்லையென்றால், எப்போதும் உடன் இருக்கும் ஒருவரை தொல்லையாக, தொந்தரவாக, தடையாக தான் நாம் பாப்போம்! ஆனால் ஒரு குழந்தையாய் மாறிவிடும் போது அந்த உடனிருப்பிற்காக ஏங்குவோம், அந்த உடனிருப்பை முழுவதுமாக உணர்ந்து ஏற்றுக்கொள்வோம். இறைவனோடு நமக்குள்ள உறவும் இதை போன்றதே!

முதல் வாசகத்தில் யோபு தன் துயர் கண்டு வருந்தி புலம்புவதை நாம் கேட்கின்றோம்... ஆனால் வெகு விரைவில், தன் இறைவன் தன்னை கை விட்டுவிடவில்லை, தன்னிடமிருந்து வெகு தொலைவில் அவரில்லை, தன்னருகே தருணம் தப்பாமல் தன்னோடே இருந்திருக்கிறார் என்பதை அவர் புரிந்துகொள்வார். உடனிருக்கும் இறைவனை நாம் உடனே உணர்வதில்லை, நேரம் செல்லச்செல்லவே உணருகின்றோம். நம்மை சுற்றி நிகழ்வுகள் நடக்க நடக்க உடனிருக்கும் இறைவன் நமக்கு வெளிப்படுகின்றார். நம்மோடு உள்ள இறைவன் ஒவ்வொருவரோடும் இருக்கின்றார் என்பதையும் நாம் உணர வேண்டும் என்று இன்றைய நற்செய்தி நம்மை அழைக்கின்றது. யாரையும் எளிதில் எதற்காகவும் குறைத்து மதிப்பிட வேண்டாம் என்று இறைவன் நம்மை எச்சரிக்கிறார்.

நம் ஒவ்வொருவரோடும் உடனிருக்கிறார் இறைவன்! இந்த உடனிருக்கும் இறைவனையே நாம் இன்று சிறப்பிக்கின்றோம். அவரை கண்டுகொள்ளவும், கொண்டாடவும் நாம் அழைக்கப்பட்டுள்ளோம்... நம் வாழ்க்கையின் ஒவ்வொரு நாளும், ஒவ்வொரு தருணமும், அவரை கண்டுகொள்வோம், கொண்டாடுவோம்!

Memoria of the Guardian Angels!

October 2, 2018: Job 3: 1-3, 11-17, 20-23; Mt 18: 1-5, 10

The memory of the Guardian Angels is an invitation to see, to see and perceive, to see and acknowledge, to see and experience the accompaniment of the Lord in a concrete manner. Every moment of our lives, we are being watched over and protected in love. We believe in an accompanying God, a God who has promised, never to leave us and to be with us till the end of this world. 

One of the earliest things we are taught as children is the presence and the guidance of the Guardian Angel. Somehow, personally, every time that I have heard of the guardian angels since childhood, I have felt a kind of childlike sentiment within me! It is not childish but childlike! Without a childlike simplicity, a constant presence of someone may look like an interference, an intrusion, a policing! But when we sport a disposition as that of a child, we will find ourselves longing for that presence, we will hang on every word from the Lord and remain faithful to the Lord in obedience.

The first reading presents Job crying out in pain, but soon he will realise that the Lord exists, and has always existed, right beside him! The fact is we become aware of it only progressively, we begin to believe in it as we experience things that happen around us. We learn to see, to see God present with us unceasingly. The Gospel instructs us against taking anyone for granted; because no one is alone! Every one is accompanied, by none less than our God. We celebrate today the accompanying God; may we grow to be more and more perceptive to the presence of God with us and see God accompanying us on our life journey.
