THE FAITH-GROWTH MANUAL

11th Sunday in Ordinary Time: 17th June, 2018

Eze 17: 22-24; 2 Cor 5: 6-10; Mk 4: 26-34

The Word today invites us to reflect on a theme that is central to our Christian Living: Faith! Infact, the readings together present to us a Faith-Growth Manual.

The Faith-Growth Manual invites us to change our style of thinking, knowing and living, all based on the faith that we have. Faith is not merely a set of beliefs that we hold on to, but it is fundamentally a way of life, the way I live my life in relation to the One who has called me. 

Let us begin with this: 

How do we understand faith? Try a definition in your hearts for faith... 

A theologically sound definition should come somewhere close to this: Faith is my personal response to a Self-revealing God. God continues to reveal Godself to me in various ways, and this revelation comes to me continuously, eliciting from me a spontaneous and conscious response and that precisely is Faith. When I experience God as the almighty creator out there, I spontaneously am filled with an awe and I am inspired to surrender as a response. When I experience the presence of God in a moment of trial personally and feel delivered from it, I am moved to proclaim God as my Saviour. At times when I am directed in ways so marvelous, I thankfully acknowledge a God who dwells with me and moreover, within me! This is faith. Beliefs are merely expressions of this faith. Formulations like the Creed and the Act of Faith are just ways in which the experience from a tradition is consolidated.

Faith, therefore, is a personal relationship with the One who is the cause of my very being. And this relationship has to grow; it has to gradually mature! 

First step is to understand that we WALK BY FAITH and not by sight. That is, we are convinced that something is right to do or not right to do, directed by our relationship with God. It is to say that we have God as our guiding principle, our compass, our route map, our GPS to say in today's terminology! What is right at a moment to do can easily be defined: what God wants of me at that juncture. 

Look at what is happening today - while the whole world seems to be sliding into what they acclaim to be scientific mentality, manipulating life and ruining lives, the Church stands tall and stays put upholding LIFE... that is walking by faith, not going by what we apparently see and being swayed by what is presented to the eyes! There is a deeper meaning to life, we will know it only when we walk by faith.

Second step is to judge a situation from God's perspective, that is what it means to KNOW BY FAITH. To know what is valuable and what is not; what is desirable and what is not; what is wholesome and what is not; it has to be decided from God's perspective. What my relationship with God permits to be good, is good for me. What my relationship with God deems improper, would remain far from my life. 

Conscience is one of the most affected facet of humanity today. It is either blunt or ill-formed due to the kind of knowledge that is authorised by the society today. Can we abide by it, if we are truly sons and daughters of God? The ethical choices and my value system has to be determined by the relationship I have with my God. Which tree is big or high and which tree is small or low, depends on how God wants to have it!

Thirdly, when I begin to walk by faith and know by faith, I actually begin to LIVE BY FAITH! We shall receive a recompense according to what we do: good or evil, reminds the second reading. What we do, will be determined by what we are. When we live by faith, our choices will show it. We need not pay any undue attention to gaining the mercy of God, or contriving to win God's favour. 

Many of us fail to live - with our memories of the past conditioning us too much in the present  or with our expectations of the future that makes us more and more dependent on the returns or with our obsession to be acceptable in the eyes of everyone around us, we fail to truly live! All that we need to do is live, live by faith, live with our relationship with God at the centre of our lives. That will automatically take care of every other aspect of our life.

A simple but demanding programme presented to us by the manual today: Walk by faith, Know by faith and Live by faith!

Speaking in Action!

Saturday, 10th week in Ordinary time

June 16, 2018 - I Kgs 19: 19-21; Mt 5: 33-37

Do not swear at all; just act! Do not just promise; be righteous and noble! Do not just speak; but live! If at all you wish to speak, let it be your actions that speak, let your lives speak before your words, your promises and your propaganda.

Elisha speaks in action, just like Elijah did while he figuratively communicated that he passes on the mandate given to him, to Elisha. Elisha responds in concrete by burning the plow and slaughtering the bulls... that was a response in action, commitment made visible, readiness made absolute. 

The episode reminds us of the famous phrase, "burning the boats". It is attached to a famous experience of the Spanish conquest of Mexico in 1519 when the Spanish Commander Hernan Cortes commanded his soldiers to literally burn the boats that the soldiers would have to either win the war or die in defeat! Another famous expression in history from 49 BC: 'Crossing the Rubicon' - Rubicon was the river that Julius Caesar, who was a mere commander of a regiment, crossed over rising to power as the Roman Emperor to rewrite history forever!

Each of us is invited specifically at a moment in history to live a call that is specific to each of us. Realising this call and responding to it with a sense of absolute commitment at a specific time in our life, is the message that the readings present to us: not to reflect and come up with some sound and sweet interpretation; but to look for a way of living our faith concretely on a daily basis.

Let our actions speak louder than our words; let our commitment to truth and justice and all the pertains to God be truly alive and concrete, not mere words and descriptions! Let our yes be an YES!

ஜூன் 16: உங்கள் வாழ்வு பேசட்டும்

வார்த்தை வாழ்வாகும் போது வார்த்தையே வாழ்வாகிறார் 

I அரசர் 19: 19-21; மத் 5: 33-37

ஆணையிடவே வேண்டாம்; ஆம் என்றால் ஆம் என்றும், இல்லையென்றால் இல்லையென்றும் மட்டும் சொல்லுங்கள். இதற்கு மேல் வருவதெல்லாம் தீயோனிடமிருந்தே வருகிறது என்று உணர்ந்துகொள்ளுங்கள். பாதி உண்மைகள், அரைகுறை உண்மைகள், பாதிப் பொய்கள், அளக்கப்பட்ட வார்த்தைகள், சோடிக்கப்பட்ட உண்மைகள்... என்று எத்தனை வகையான தீமைகள் நமது சொற்களில் அடங்கியுள்ளன. உங்கள் சொற்கள் உங்கள் வாழ்க்கையாக வேண்டும் என்று அழைக்கிறார் இறைவன். 

எலிசேயு இன்றைய வாசகத்தில் தனது சொற்களால் பேசாமல் தனது செயலால் பேசுகிறார். தந்து துண்டை அவர் மீது எலியாசு போட்டபோது ஆண்டவருடைய அழைப்பு அவருக்கு தரப்பட்டது. அந்த அழைப்பிற்கு ஆம் என்பதோ இல்லை என்பதோ எலிசேயுவிடமே இருந்தது - நான் என்ன செய்ய வேண்டும் என்று எலியாஸிடம் கேட்கும் போது அவர் தெளிவாக என்னை ஏன் கேட்கிறாய் என்று கூறிவிட்டு நகர்கிறார். அழைத்தது இறைவன் அல்லவா. நமது வாழ்விலும் சூழல்கள் பல வரலாம் என்ன செய்ய வேண்டும் என்று நாம் பலரிடம் கேட்போம் - மறந்துவிட வேண்டாம்... நம்மை அழைப்பது இறைவன். அவருக்கே நாம் பதிலிறுக்க வேண்டும். 

நமது பதில் வெறும் வார்த்தையாக இல்லாமல் வாழ்வாக இருக்க வேண்டும் என்று அழைக்கிறார் கிறிஸ்து. எலிசேயு அதையே செய்கிறார்... தன் அழைப்பிற்கு தனது செயலால் பதிலிறுக்கிறார். தன்னிடமிருந்த இரண்டு காளைகளை வெட்டி பலியிட்டு தன் ஏரினையே விறகாக்கி சமைத்து தன்னை சுற்றியிருந்தவர்களுக்கு விருந்தளித்து அனைத்தையும் துறந்து இறைவனை பின்செல்கிறார். இது வரலாற்றின் ஒரு அறிய நிகழ்வை நமக்கு நினைவூட்டுகிறது. 1519ல் மெக்சிகோ மீது ஸ்பெயின் படையெடுத்தபோது எர்னான் கோர்தேஸ் என்ற ஸ்பெயினின் படை தலைவன் தன வீரர்கள் தாங்கள் வந்த கப்பல்களை எரிக்க கட்டளையிட்டான். செய் அல்லது செத்து மடி என்ற சொல்லாடல் அங்கு பிறந்தது.

இறைவனுக்கு நாம் கூறும் "ஆம்" முழுமையான ஆமாக இருக்க வேண்டும். இறைவனுக்காக, அவரது அரசிற்காக, அவரது சித்தத்திற்காக வாழ நாம் முன் வரவேண்டும். நம் வாழ்வின் பொருள் என்னவென்று நம் வாழ்வே பேசவேண்டும். நமது வார்த்தைகள் வாழ்வாகும் போது வாழ்வான வார்த்தை நம்மோடு வந்து வாழ்வார் என்பதில் எந்த வியப்பும் இல்லை!

Silence: the voice of a sound soul

Friday, 10th week in Ordinary Time

1 Kgs 19: 9a,11-16; Mt 5: 27-32

The Lord speaks not so much in a loud thunder or in a raging fire, but in the silent whisper in the depth of one's heart, where one knows for oneself whether he or she is right or wrong, virtuous or not, authentic or not! That is the moment of truth when one encounters the Lord in the sound of sheer silence. 

Making noise is the way of the world today! Even if you have no stuff, make noise to an extent that people believe, or at the least, are forced to accept what you have to say. Just look at the political scene today: those who make more noise and go around threatening others have a lot to hide and safeguard themselves from. Or look at the media today: making more noise makes one more powerful, or at least that is what they imagine!

The Word is bringing this tendency of the world to question: where is the truth, in shouting at the top of your voice or going to the depth of things? Who is right: one who proclaims himself or herself as true and goes about recklessly proving and defending oneself or in remaining calm and allowing your integrity to speak for itself?

I can proclaim something and live something totally different, I might preach something and believe in something totally opposite, I might profess something but internally be absolutely without any conviction...my heart is my judge, my soul is my mirror, my Lord is the only one who scrutinises me in Silence, in Silence which is the voice of a sound soul!

ஜூன் 15: அமைதி - ஆன்மாவின் குரல்

அமைதியின் தெய்வம், அருகிருக்கும் தெய்வம் 

1 அரசர் 19: 9a,11-16; மத் 5: 27-32

அஞ்சவைக்கும் இடியை விட, அலற வைக்கும் நெருப்பை விட, ஆழ்மனதில் ஒலிக்கும் அமைதியில் அதிகம் உறைபவர் நம் ஆண்டவர். அமைதியில் என் ஆன்மாவின் குரல் ஒலிக்கிறது - நன்மை தீமை, சரி தவறு, புனிதம் பாவம், நேர்மை அநீதி - என்று அனைத்தையும் தொடர்ந்து எனக்குள் உணர்த்திக்கொண்டே இருப்பது இந்த ஆன்மாவின் குரலே! அதுவே உண்மையின் குரல், அதுவே அமைதியின் தெய்வத்தின் குரல், அதுவே அருகிருக்கும் தெய்வத்தின் குரல். 

கூச்சலிடுவதே இன்றைய உலகத்தின் கலாச்சாரமாகிவிட்டது - எங்கு நோக்கினும் கூச்சல். வெறும் பானைகள் அதிகம் ஓசையிடும் என்பதை போல, அதிகம் கூச்சலிட்டு தன்னிடம் உண்மை இல்லை என்னும் நிலையை மறைத்துவிட எத்தனிக்கின்றது இன்றைய உலகம். இன்றைய அரசியலை பாருங்கள்: உரக்க பேசுபவர்களே அதிகம், உண்மை பேசுபவர்கள் இல்லை. இன்றைய ஊடகங்களும் அதையே தான் முன்னிறுத்துகிறது - யார் உரக்க சொல்கிறார்கள், யார் முதலில் சொல்கிறார்கள் என்று தான் பார்க்கிறார்களே ஒழிய, யார் உண்மையை சொல்கிறார்கள் என்று யாரும் தேடுவதில்லை. 

இன்றைய இறைவார்த்தை கேள்விக்குள்ளாக்கும் போக்கு இதுவே! உண்மை எங்கிருக்கிறது - உச்சத்தில் ஒலிக்கும் உன் குரலிலா அல்லது உள்ளத்தின் உண்மையான ஆழத்திலா? யார் சரி - தன்னையே முன்னிறுத்திக்கொண்டு தான் சொல்வதெல்லாம் உண்மை என்றும் தான் மட்டுமே நேர்மையாளன் என்றும் தம்பட்டம் அடிக்கும் பலரா அல்லது ஆழ சிந்தித்து உள்ளார்ந்து உணர்ந்து உண்மைக்காக உயிர்கொடுக்கவும் தயாராகும் ஒருசிலரா?

நான் ஆயிரம் பேசலாம் ஆனால் என் வாழ்வு எதை பேசுகிறது? மற்றவருக்கு உலகிற்கு சமூகத்திற்கு என பல போதனைகள் செய்யலாம் ஆனால் ஆழ்மனதில் நான் நம்பும் உண்மை எது? என் ஆழ்மனமே எனது நீதிபதி. என் ஆன்மாவே எனது உண்மையின் குரல். அந்த ஆழ்மனதின், ஆன்மாவின் அமைதியே இறைவனின் குரல்! 

While you are still on the way!

Thursday, 10th week in Ordinary Time

14 June, 2018 - 1 Kgs 18: 41-46; Mt 5: 20-26

The connecting thread between the first reading and the Gospel today is what one can do while he or she is still on the way! While you still have the time and the opportunity, better reform your life, warns the Word today. At times we keep postponing our decision to turn good, and finally find there is no time or possibility, or that things have gone too far or we have already started facing the consequences of the erstwhile mistakes!

Why waste time while you know it is not going to help in the long run? Unnecessary cravings, unrealistic dreams, uncharitable priorities, ungodly presumptions, unfriendly attitudes, unholy practices...everything has to end! It is important to read the small signs that the Lord gives on our horizon and not wait until some terrible reminder comes our way.

Every one of us has some little point in life to be touched and transformed, reworked and reframed, deepened or levelled. At times we may set aside some signs as too small, (as small as the palm of the hand) or waste a precious moment blinded by our ego. It can happen to any of us: even the ones who consider themselves the most righteous.  Let us not waste time in our petty ego games!

The Lord wants us to make a choice, clear and concrete, for the sake of the Reign. Seek ye first the Reign of God... hasten to choose the Reign, lest you fail to belong to the Reign. Decide and Stand up for the Reign, while you are still on the way!

ஜூன் 13: பதுவை நகர் புனித அந்தோணியார்

இறைவனின் மகிமையை உணர்த்திய மாபெரும் புனிதர் 

சிறப்பான சில தகவல்கள்:

• பிறப்பு: 15, ஆகஸ்ட், 1195. பிறந்த இடம் போர்ச்சுகலில் உள்ள லிஸ்பன். உண்மையில் இவர் லிஸ்பன் நகர் அந்தோனியார் என்று அழைக்கப்படவேண்டும் எனினும் அவர் இத்தாலியிலுள்ள  பதுவை நகரில் ஆற்றிய பணியும் அதன் வழியாய் வெளிப்பட்ட இறைவனின் மகிமையும் மறக்க முடியாதவை ஆதலால் மக்கள் இவரை பதுவை நகர் அந்தோனியார் என்று அழைக்கலாயினர்.
• இறப்பு: 13, ஜூன், 1231. இறக்கும் போது அவருக்கு வயது வெறும் 36 மட்டுமே!
• புனிதர்: அவர் திருத்தந்தை ஒன்பதாம் கிரகோரி அவர்களால் 30, மே 1232 அன்று புனிதராக அறிவிக்கப்பட்டபோது அவருக்கு வயது 37 கூட நிரம்பவில்லை. இறந்து ஒரு வருடத்திற்குள்ளாகவே அவரை புனிதராய் அறிவிக்க வேண்டியதாயிற்று. ஏனெனில் மக்கள் அவர் இறந்தவுடனேயே, அவர் புனிதர் என்பதை கண்டுகொண்டனர். அவர் வாழும்போதே அவரது வாழ்வில் வெளிப்பட்ட இறை மகிமை, தொடர்ந்து அவரது இறப்பின் பிறகும் அவரது பரிந்துரையால் வெளிப்பட்ட வண்ணமே இருந்தது. 
• அவரது திருமுழுக்கு பெயர் பெர்தினாந்து மார்ட்டீன்ஸ் தே புலோஸ் என்பதாகும். அவர் துறவியாக பிரான்சிஸ்குவின் சபையில் சேர்ந்த போது தனது பெயரை அந்தோணி என்று மாற்றிக்கொண்டார்.
• அவரது வாழ்நாட்களிலேயே நடந்த சில புதுமைகளால் அவர் காணாமற்போன ஆட்களையோ பொருட்களையோ தேடி கொடுக்கும் புனிதராக கருதப்படுகிறார்.
• இன்று அவரது பேராலயம் இருக்கும் பதுவையில் அவரிடம் நல்ல வரன் கிடைக்கவும், அல்லது திருமண வாழ்வில் பிரச்சனைகளில் இருக்கும் தம்பதியினர் தொல்லைகள் தீரவும் பரிந்துரை கேட்கின்றனர்.
• இப்பேராலயத்தில் அவரது நாவு இன்றும் அழியாது இறைவனின் அரும்செயலாய் நமக்கு காட்சியளிக்கின்றது.  
• புனித பிரான்சிஸ்கு அசிசியாரின் காலத்திலேயே வாழ்ந்தவர் என்று எண்ணும் போது இரு பெரும் புனிதர்கள் ஒரே சபையில் ஒரே நேரத்தில் உருவாகிக்கொண்டிருந்தனர் என்பது நம்மை வியப்பில் ஆழ்த்துகிறது. 
• மரியன்னைக்கும் யோசேப்புக்கும் அடுத்து அதிகமாய் அன்பு செய்யப்படு புனிதர் என்றால் அது புனித அந்தோணியாரே! அதேபோல் மரியன்னையையும் யோசேப்பையும் தவிர குழந்தை இயேசுவை கையில் சுமந்தவாறு இருக்கும் புனிதர் இவர் ஒருவரே! இதற்கு பல விளக்கங்கள் உண்டு: அவர் ஒருமுறை செபித்துக்கொண்டிருந்த போது குழந்தை இயேசு அவருக்கு காட்சியளித்தார் என்பது ஒரு விளக்கம். 17ம் நூற்றாண்டில் ஒரு பிரான்சிஸ்கன் துறவி புனித அந்தோனியார் குழந்தை இயேசுவை சுமந்தவாரு ஒரு காட்சி கண்டார் என்பது மற்றொரு விளக்கம். ஆனால்...
• இந்த விளக்கங்களில் எல்லாம் சிறந்தது இதுவே: அவர் இறைவார்த்தையை எந்த அளவுக்கு நேசித்தார் அறிவித்தார் என்றால், அந்த இறைவார்த்தையே தான் மனுவுருவான நிலையில் அவரது கரங்களில் வந்து தாங்கினார்!
• நமது உள்ளங்களிலும் இறைவார்த்தையை நாம் நெருக்கமாய் உணர்ந்தோம் என்றால், அந்தோணியாரை போன்றே இறைவார்த்தையை நாமும் நமது கரங்களில் ஏந்துவோம்!
• கோடி அற்புதராம் பதுவை நகர் புனித அந்தோனியாரே - எங்களுக்காக வேண்டிக்கொள்ளும். 

Anthony of Padua - a Saint of True Grandeur!

Some interesting facts

• Born: 15, August, 1195. He was actually born in Lisbon, Portugal. Though he should be called St. Anthony of Lisbon, due to the great prophetic ministry he carried out in the city of Padua in Italy, he is called St. Anthony of Padua to distinguish him from St. Anthony of Egypt, who belongs to the fourth century!
• Died: 13, June, 1231. He was just 36 when he died. 
• Saint: He was not even 37 when he was canonised - on 30, May, 1232 by Pope Gregory IX.
• His Baptismal name was Ferdinand Martins de Bulhŏes. He took the name Anthony when he became a religious.
• He was elected Provincial of his region of Franciscan friars, but he resigned very shortly  just to be able to carryout his preaching mission.
• Patron of missing things and missing persons!
• In Padua, where the Basilica stands today, he is also prayed to, by those who are looking for the right spouse to marry, or by those married couples who have problems in their marriage. 
• The Basilica treasures the incorrupt tongue of the saint, as a relic venerated till today, as a testimony to his gift of breaking the Word.
• He was a contemporary to St. Francis of Assisi and one of the best ones at that.
• A survey reports that after the Blessed Mother and St.Joseph, St. Anthony may be the most loved saint in the Catholic World today.
• Apart from Our Blessed Mother and St. Joseph, St. Anthony is the only other saint who is depicted with Child Jesus in his hands. The reasons are varied: one, because there was a legend that the Infant Jesus appeared to him during his prayer and meditation; another because in the 17th century a franciscan friar had a vision as such. The best of all reasons however is...
• He was so close to the Word of God, that the Word made flesh, the Son of God who was born into this world came to be with him, to be carried by him as he did all his life. 
• We too can hold the person of Jesus Christ in our hands, if we hold the Word close to our hearts. St. Anthony ...Pray for Us.

ஜூன் 12: ஒளியாய் கொடுத்திட...

தியாக தீபங்கள் அணையா விளக்குகள் 

1அரசர் 17: 7-16; மத் 5: 13-16

நாம் ஒளி கொடுக்க மட்டுமல்ல, ஒளியை போலவே கொடுத்திட அழைக்கப்பட்டுள்ளோம் என்பதை விளக்குகிறது இன்றைய இறைவார்த்தை. கொடுப்பதன் இன்பம் பெறுவதில் இல்லை என்பது நாம் அறிந்ததே, வாழ்வில் உணர்ந்ததே. ஆனால் கொடுப்பது அனைத்துமே இறைவன் நம்மிடம் எதிர்பார்க்கும் கொடுத்தலுக்கு இணையாவதில்லை. இன்றைய முதல் வாசகத்தில் ஒரு கைம்பெண்ணை சந்திக்கின்றோம்... அவர் கொடுத்தார். தன்னிடம் உள்ளவற்றிலிருந்து மட்டுமல்ல, தன்னிடம் உள்ள அனைத்தையும் கொடுத்தார்! இருந்தது சிறிதே ஆயினும் உள்ளது அனைத்தையும் கொடுத்தார். அதனால் தான் அவரிடம் இருந்தது தீரவே இல்லை... தியாக தீபங்கள் அனைவதில்லையல்லவா! 

கிறிஸ்து உள்ளவற்றிலிருந்து கொடுத்தல், உள்ள அனைத்தையும் கொடுத்தல் எனும் இவற்றை தாண்டியதொரு கொடுத்தலை குறித்து நம்மிடம் பேசுகிறார்... அதற்கு அழகானதொரு குறியீடையும் நமக்கு தருகிறார் - ஒளி! உலகிற்கு ஒளி நீங்கள்... ஒளியாய் கொடுத்திடுங்கள். ஒளி தன்னிடம் உள்ளதிலிருந்தோ, யாருக்கு தருகிறோம் என்று தரம்பிரித்தோ, தருவது சரியா இல்லையா என்று சீர்த்தூக்கியோ தருவதில்லை. தான் அணையும் வரை தருகிறது, உள்ள அனைவருக்கும் தருகிறது, எதையும் எதிர்பாராது தருகிறது. 

உள்ளவற்றிலிருந்து மட்டுமல்ல, உள்ள அனைத்தையும் மட்டுமல்ல, உங்களையே கொடுத்திடுங்கள், இறைவனுக்காய், இறை சித்தத்திற்காய் உங்களையே கொடுத்திடுங்கள்... ஒளியாய் கொடுத்திடுங்கள். தியாக தீபங்களாய், அணையா விளக்குகளாய் என்றென்றைக்கும் சுடர்விடுங்கள்!

The unspent jar and the unquenchable light

Tuesday, 10th week in Ordinary Time

1 Kgs 17: 7-16; Mt 5: 13-16

In the Word Today we hear an episode so interesting and fabulous...the jar that would never be spent! That was because the widow was ready to give even the little she had, knowing well what it would cost her and her little son. She gave and she was blessed. She gave not merely from what she had, but all that she had, even the little that she had - does it ring a bell and remind you of another widow, who too gave all of the little that she had and was noticed by Jesus, in the Gospels? Yes, Jesus wanted to draw a loud parallel between the two to ensure that the disciples understood that suck kind of persons do continue to exist and continue to challenge us!

Jesus teaches us today, of another type of giving... giving not merely from what we have and not even giving all that we have, but giving what we are! He uses the imagery of light to impress this spirituality on to our hearts. We are called to be light and to share that light with the world. We are called to shine, to enlighten the lives of people, to show them the path to the Lord... to be light in all ways possible. 

Being light and sharing that light is not merely giving of what we have and being done with it - it is giving others, giving the world, giving everyone regardless of who they are, giving all of them from what we ARE. 

Our light should shine for others, not for ourselves. It should shine certainly not to showcase our own greatness and so called achievements! Let us remember - when it shines for others, it will never be quenched, just like that jar that would never be spent!
