கடவுளின் உரிமையின் முத்திரை

அக்டோபர் 19, 2018: எபேசியர் 1:11-14; லூக்கா 12: 1-7

சில நேரங்களில் நான் சிலரை கண்டு வியந்தது உண்டு... இவர்கள் உண்மையிலேயே மகிழ்ச்சியாய் இருக்க வேண்டுமென விரும்புகிறார்களா இல்லையா என்று! மகிழ்ச்சியாயிருக்க காரணமும் வழியும் ஆயிரம் இருக்க, தவறாக செல்லும் ஓரிரு காரணங்கங்களை மட்டும் பிடித்து கொண்டு தங்கள் வாழ்வையும் தங்களை சுற்றி இருப்போர் வாழ்வையும் நரகமாக்கி அதிலேயே இருந்துவிட எண்ணும் இவர்களது போக்கு உண்மையிலேயே வியப்பும் வருத்தமும் தரக்கூடியது! உண்மையில் நான் கடவுளின் மகனாய் மகளாய் இருந்தால், எனக்குள் இருக்கும் இந்த மனநிலையை நான் முதலில் களைய வேண்டும். 

கிறிஸ்து இன்று கூறும் அச்சமற்ற மனநிலை என்பது இதை சார்ந்ததே. அஞ்சாதீர்கள், அஞ்சாதீர்கள் என்று திரும்ப திரும்ப கூறும் கிறிஸ்துவின் மனதை புரிந்து கொள்ள முயற்சிப்போம்... உண்மையான நிலைபாடுகளும், சரியான சிந்தனையும், நேர்மறையான வாழ்வியல் முறையும் இருந்துவிட்டால் நாம் யாரையும் எதையும் குறித்து அஞ்ச வேண்டும் என்ற அவசியமே இல்லை. நான் கடவுளுக்கு சொந்தமானவன், கடவுள் எனக்கென ஒரு திட்டத்தை வைத்துள்ளார், அதை நான் அறிவேன், படி படியாய் அதை எனக்கு உணர்த்தியும் வருகின்றார், அவரது வழிகளில் நான் நடக்கும் போது எந்த இருளும் என்னை மேற்கொள்ளாது, எந்த இழிநிலையும் எனக்கு வந்து விடாது ஏனெனில் அவரே எனக்கு கேடயமும் பலமுமாய் இருக்கிறார், அவரே என்னை காக்கின்றார், ஏனெனில் நான் அவருக்கே சொந்தமானவன், சொந்தமானவள் - இதுவே உண்மை, இந்த உண்மையே நம்மை விடுதலையாகும்!

இந்த உண்மையை நமக்கு விளங்கச்செய்பவர் தூய ஆவியானவரே... அவரே இறைவன் என் மீது கொண்டுள்ள உரிமையின் முத்திரை ஆவார், என்கிறார் பவுலடிகளார். இந்த தூய ஆவியார் என் உள்ளத்திலே பொழியப்பட்டுள்ளார், குடிகொண்டுள்ளார், தொடர்ந்து என்னை வழி நடத்துகின்றார். அவரது உரிமையின் முத்திரையை நான் உணர்கின்றேனா, அதற்கு கட்டுப்பட்டு வாழ்கின்றேனா... அவ்வாறு வாழ்ந்தால் எனக்குள்ளிருக்கும் மகிழ்ச்சியை யாராலும் எந்நேரத்திலும் எடுத்துவிட முடியாது!

Friday, 28th week in Ordinary time

October 19, 2018: Ephesians 1: 11-14; Luke 12: 1-7.

At times I wonder, do people really wish to be happy? One moment they are happy and the very next moment they are down in spirits, with concerns that they alone know. It gives me an idea that people choose to be unhappy and choose to make others unhappy! While there are thousand reasons to thank God for, we choose those few things that can make us feel miserable. While there are myriads of ways to create joy around us, we choose to make life so despicable for ourselves and all others around! If I have to be a child of God, I have to be beware of this tendency within me and people around me with such a tendency!

But I have nothing to fear! Do not fear, do not be afraid... Jesus repeatedly assures us not to be guided by fear. When we are filled with true convictions and not convenient compromises, when we are taken up with absolute commitment to the life task entrusted to us, we will be truthful to God who has created us, who has chosen us in Christ, sealed us in the Spirit and commissioned us to be the people of God, wherever and to whomever we are sent. That truth will indeed set us free (cf. Jn 8:32). 

When we live by truth, we will not fear anyone or anything. Whereas when we have teachings of our own making or forces that operate us from the dark, then we will struggling and striving to prove ourselves and dominate others: it may look like we are having power, but it is actually slavery! 

We will be enabled to make the choice that Jesus asks of us today, only by the power of the Spirit of Ownership that God has poured into our hearts, that which we need to hold on to as the mark of our belonging to God. I need to desire and wish that God owns me, directs me, controls me, uses me and holds me! Only then can I truly be glad and happy! 

இறையரசின் நற்செய்தியாளர்களாவோம்

அக்டோபர் 18, 2018: நற்செய்தியாளர் புனித லூக்கா - விழா 

2 தீமோத்தேயு 4: 10-17ஆ; லூக்கா 10:1-9

இன்று புனித லூக்காவின் திருவிழாவை கொண்டாடுகின்றோம்... நற்செய்தியாளர்களிலே லூக்கா இல்லாமலிருந்தால் பல இனிமையான பகுதிகளை நாம் இழந்திருப்போம்... இறைவனின் வல்ல செய்லகளை மரியன்னை புகழ்ந்துரைக்கும் வாழ்த்துப்பா, இறைவனின் வாக்குபிறழாமையை போற்றும் சக்கரியாவின் பாடல், கோவிலில் இறைவாக்கினர் சிமியோன் அன்னா ஆகியோரின் பாடல், திருமுழுக்கு யோவானின் பிறப்பு, கிறிஸ்துவின் விண்ணேற்பு... என எத்தனை நிகழ்வுகளை லூக்கா வழியாக இறைவார்த்தை நமக்கு தருகின்றது! இந்த நற்செய்தியாளருக்காக நாம் இறைவனுக்கு நன்றி கூறியே ஆகவேண்டும்.  

லூக்கா இல்லாமலிருந்தால் எரிக்கோவின் சக்கேயுவை சந்தித்திருக்கமாட்டோம், நடுவழியில் வந்த பத்து தொழுநோயாளிகளை சந்தித்திருக்கமாட்டோம், கிறிஸ்துவின் பெண் சீடர்களை அறிந்திருக்கமாட்டோம், கிறிஸ்துவிடம் வான்வீட்டை பரிசாய் பெற்ற நல்ல கள்வனையோ, உயிர்தப்பின் சீடர்களோடு வழியெல்லாம் பேசிக்கொண்டே நடந்த உயிர்த்த கிறிஸ்துவை எம்மாவூஸ் போகும் வழியில் சந்தித்திருக்க மாட்டோம். சாகாவரம் பெற்ற உவமைகளில் சிலவான ஊதாரி மைந்தன் உவமை, நல்ல சமாரியன், செல்வந்தனும் இலாசரும் போன்றவற்றை நாம் கேட்டிருக்க மாட்டோம்!

இவற்றையெல்லாம் காட்டிலும் லூக்காவுக்கு ஒரு தனிச்சிறப்பு உண்டு... இறையரசை பற்றி அவரது புரிதலே அது. மற்ற மூன்று நற்செய்திகளும் கூட இறையரசை குறித்து தெளிவாய் பேசினாலும், லூக்காவின் பார்வையில் இறையரசு சிந்தனைகள் கிறிஸ்துவின் மனதை  வேறு யாரையும் விட வெகு ஆழமாய் படம் பிடித்து காட்டுகிறது என்றால் அது மிகையாகாது. இறையரசு உங்கள் மத்தியில் உள்ளது (17:21), இறையரசு வெகு அருகில் உள்ளது (10:9), என்று இறையரசின் அருகிருப்பை லூக்காவே அதிகமாய் வலியுறுத்திகிறார். நாம் இருக்கும் இடத்திலே, நம்மை சுற்றி நடக்கும் நிகழ்வுகளில், துன்புறும் மனிதர்களில், போராடும் மனங்களில், உண்மையை உரைக்கும் உள்ளங்களில், பிறருக்காக சிந்திக்கும் சீராளர்களில் இறையரசின் அருகிருப்பையும் அதற்காக நமது பொறுப்பையும் உணர நம்மை அழைக்கிறார். 

இறைவார்த்தையால் தொடப்பட்டு, இறையரசின் கனவோடு, இறையரசின் முன்னெடுப்பகளோடு இறையரசின் நற்செய்தியாளர்களாக வாழ புனித லூக்கா நமக்கு உதவுவாராக!

The Evangelist of the Reign

Remembering the Evangelist St. Luke: 18th October, 2018

2 Timothy 4: 10-17b; Luke  10: 1-9

Today we celebrate St. Luke, an evangelist par excellence who has an irreplaceable contribution made to the Scriptures. If it were not for Luke, we would have no Magnificat -the song of praise sung by our Blessed Mother, no Benedictus -the song of praise by Zecharaiah, no prophecy of Simeon, no song of Anna, no account of John's birth or no account of the Ascension! 

But for St. Luke we would not have met Zachaeus in Jericho, the ten leprosy patients on the way, or the Women disciples who followed Jesus, or the good thief on the Cross or Jesus on the way to Emmaus. But for St. Luke we would have missed the greatest of stories ever told -the Prodigal Son and other inspiring stories of the Good Samaritan, the Rich man and Lazarus and Jesus' walk to Emmaus after resurrection.

There is yet another speciality of Luke, which is his way of making sense of the Reign of God. Though even the other Gospels, be it the synoptics or that of John, they speak of the Reign of God. Luke, in his turn speaks of the Reign of God as being amidst us. "Reign of God is amidst you", says Lk 17:21. The same is recorded in Lk 10:9, which we hear today: "the Reign of God has come near to you". This specific message of Luke invites us to recognise in action our call to be the agents of the Reign of God. It is a call to live our life as the people of the reign thus ushering in the reign of God here on earth. 

May St. Luke inspire us to get in touch with the Word of God more and more and help us towards making the reign of God felt, present and flourish wherever we are.

Remembering St. Ignatius of Antioch

The WORD and the Saint
October 17, 2018: Gal 5: 18-25; Lk 11: 42-46

Can one be justified by faith apart from the works of law - this was, is and will ever be a point of contention. In the Old Testament times it was a contention between the 'conservative' and the 'progressive' rabbinic schools; in Jesus' times between him and the Jewish religious heads; in the times of the early Christians it was a contention between those who followed the Pauline theology and those who believed the theology of James; today it continues between the Catholics and the non Catholics! 

Needless to say our point of reference is Jesus: 'Don't put your trust in your capacity to achieve things and to gain control or dominance', warns Jesus, 'become like children!' That is primacy of faith! He also declared, 'when you did this to one of these little ones, you did it to me!' That is the necessity of works! 

What Jesus taught against was, empty ritualism, legalistic spirituality and hypocritical religiosity! St. Ignatius of Antioch, whom we celebrate today says that in very simple words, "it is not that I want merely to be called a Christian, but to actually be one. Yes, if I prove to be one, then I can have the name."

How do I prove, unless through my life! That is why we need the gifts of the Holy Spirit to bear the fruits of the Holy Spirit. But these are not some kind of rules and regulations and protocol to be fulfilled in order to merit what is called salvation! These have to be the signs, fruits, indications and the fragrance of what I am deep inside of me!

எனக்குள் நான் யார்?

புனித அந்தியோக்கு இஞ்ஞாசியார் - நினைவு 

அக்டோபர் 17, 2018: கலா 5: 18-25; லூக் 11: 43-46

என்னை மீட்கப்போவது எது? எனது நம்பிக்கையா, எனது செயல்களா? இது என்றுமே இருந்துவந்துள்ள ஒரு விவாதம். இன்றும் உள்ள விவாதம்; என்றும் இருக்க போகின்ற விவாதம். பழைய ஏற்பாட்டு காலத்திலே பழமைவாதம் பேசிய யூதர்களுக்கும் மறுமலர்ச்சி வேண்டிய யூதர்களுக்கும் இடையே; கிறிஸ்துவின் காலத்திலே அவருக்கும் பரிசேயர் சதுசேயர்களுக்கும் இடையே, தொடக்க திருச்சபையில் பவுலடிகளாரின் இறையியலை பின் தொடர்ந்தவர்களுக்கும், யாக்கோபின் இறையியலை பின் தொடர்ந்தவர்களுக்கும் இடையே, இன்று  கத்தோலிக்கர்களுக்கும் பிரிவினை சபையினருக்கும் இடையே, என்று இந்த விவாதம் இல்லாத ஒரு காலகட்டத்தை நம்மால் காண முடியாது. 

இதில் பெரிய குழப்பம் ஏதும் இல்லை: நமது ஒரே உரைக்கல் கிறிஸ்துவே. உங்களது அதிகாரத்தையும் உங்களது முக்கியத்துவத்தையும் முன்னிறுத்துவது எது என்று தேடி அதை ஆதரிக்கும் ஆதிக்க சிந்தனையை கைவிடுங்கள்... மாறாக குழந்தைகளாக, குழந்தை மனம் படைத்தவர்களாக மாறுங்கள், என்று அழைப்பு விடுக்கிறார் கிறிஸ்து. இதுவே நம்பிக்கையின் ஆதாரம். இந்த சின்னஞ்சிறியோருள் ஒருவருக்கு நீங்கள் செய்தவை எல்லாம் எனக்கே செய்தீர்கள் என்று கிறிஸ்து  கூறுவதில்லையா! 

கிறிஸ்துவின் மனம் இதுவே: வெறும் சட்டம், வெற்று சம்பிரதாயம், ஆழமற்ற ஆன்மீகம், மனிதமற்ற மதக்கோட்பாடுகள் இவையெதுவும் உங்களை கடவுளின் பிள்ளைகளாக்க முடியாது! கடவுளின் பிள்ளைகளாகாமல் இறைவனின் மீட்பை நீங்கள் பெற முடியாது.இன்று நாம் நினைவு கூறும் அந்தியோக்கு நகர் இஞ்ஞாசியார் இதை மிக எளிமையாக கூறுவார்: "நான் வெறுமனே கிறிஸ்தவன் என்று அழைக்கப்பட விரும்பவில்லை, அப்படி வாழ நினைக்கிறேன். ஆம், நான் வாழும் வாழ்க்கையை பார்த்து மக்கள் என்னை கிறிஸ்தவன் என்று கூறுவதே முறையாகும்" என்கிறார்.

எப்படி நான் இதை வாழ்ந்து காட்ட முடியும்? தூய ஆவியாரின் கொடைகள் இதனாலேயே முக்கியத்துவம் பெறுகின்றன. ஆனால் இவை வெறும் சட்ட திட்டங்களோ, செய்ய வேண்டியது செய்ய கூடாதது என்னும் பட்டியலோ,  பாவம் புண்ணியம் என்ற வரையறையோ அல்ல... இவை, கிறிஸ்துவிலும் ஆவியிலும் நான் வாழும் வாழ்க்கையின் வெளிப்பாடு, என் உள்ளத்தின் ஆழத்தில் உள்ள சிந்தனைகள் என்ன, அடுத்தவரையும் இந்த உலகத்தையும் நான் நோக்கும் கண்ணோட்டம் எப்படியுள்ளது, சுருங்க கூறின் எனக்குள் உண்மையில் நான் யார் என்பதன் வெளிப்பாடுகளேயாகும்!

நம்பிக்கையும் அன்பும்

அக்டோபர் 16, 2018: கலா 5:1-6; லூக் 11:37-41

சுதந்திரமும் கீழ்ப்படிதலும் என்று நேற்று சிந்தித்தோம்... இன்று வேறு இரண்டு நற்கூறுகள் நம் சிந்தனைக்கு தரப்படுகின்றன. நம்பிக்கையும் அன்பும்! இவை இரண்டும் ஒன்றை ஒன்று பிரியாமல் இருக்க வேண்டியவை: அன்பில்லாத நம்பிக்கை வீண், நம்பிக்கையில்லாத அன்பு நிலையற்றது! 

பரிசேயர் ஒருவர் கிறிஸ்துவை வீட்டிற்கு அழைக்க, யார் எவர் ஏன் என்றெல்லாம் எண்ணாமல் இசைந்து அவரோடு செல்கிறார் கிறிஸ்து. ஆனால் அங்கு சென்ற போது, விருந்தோம்பலின் மகிழ்ச்சி குறை கூறுவதிலும், நட்பின் நெகிழ்ச்சி சட்ட சம்பிரதாயங்களிலும், அன்பின் மலர்ச்சி வெறும் வெளிவேடத்திலும் காணாமலே போகிறது! 

நம்பிக்கை என்பது கிறிஸ்து நம்மை விடுதலையாக்கியுள்ளார் என்பதை உணர்வதில் அடங்கியுள்ளது என்பதை பவுலடிகளார் நமக்கு தெளிவுபடுத்துகின்றார். இந்த விடுதலை வெறும் வாய் வார்த்தையிலோ அல்லது வெளி தோற்றத்திலோ உணரப்படுவது மட்டுமல்ல, உள்ளார்ந்த எனது சிந்தனையிலும், முடிவுகளை மதிப்பிடும் விதத்திலும் வெளிப்படுகிறது. சட்டதிட்டங்கள், அடுத்தவரின் அபிப்பிராயங்கள், பிறருக்கு நான் தரவிரும்பும் என்னை பற்றிய புரிதல்... இவையெல்லாம் என்னை இன்னும் சிறைபிடித்து வைக்கக்கூடிய கூறுகள் என்பதை நான் உணரவேண்டும். நம்பிக்கையிலே இறைவன் முன்னிலையில் நான் எப்படி இருக்கிறேன் என்பது மட்டுமே அவசியமானது, மாற்றம் தரக்கூடியது, என் அடையாளத்தை நிர்ணயிக்க கூடியது என்பதை நான் உணர்ந்திருக்கிறேனா, என்பதே இன்றைய வார்த்தை நம்மிடம் கேட்கும் கேள்வியாகும். 

உண்மையான அன்பு அடுத்தவரை தீர்ப்பிடாது ஏற்றுக்கொள்ளும் தன்மை; அது யார் என்று தரம் பிரிக்காது உணரப்படும் உள்ளார்ந்த நல்லெண்ணம். இந்த அன்பும் நம்பிக்கையும் ஒன்றையொன்று சந்திக்கும் இடத்தில கிறிஸ்து வாழ்கிறார்!  அன்பற்ற நம்பிக்கை வெறும் சட்டதிட்டங்கள் அடிமைகளை அடையாள படுத்தும். நம்பிக்கையற்ற அன்பு வெகு தூரம் செல்லாது, பாதியிலே அயர்ந்து உலர்ந்து போய்விடும்! உண்மை அன்பும் உள்ளார்ந்த நம்பிக்கையும் நம்மில் நிலைத்து விட்டால், கிறிஸ்து அங்கு உயிரோடு வாழ்வதை காணாமல் இருக்கமுடியாது!

Where faith and love meet, Christ is!

Tuesday, 28th week in Ordinary time

October 16, 2018: Gal 5: 1-6; Lk 11: 37-41

When the Pharisee invited Jesus to come home, Jesus did not mind at all going over and dining with him. In spite of feeling honoured by his invitation having been accepted, the Pharisee was more worried about Jesus washing or not washing his hands, rituals followed or not, circumcision or no circumcision, laws and fulfillment of laws... Jesus gets upset over it. The happiness of having a guest was lost in the judgements that the host was passing on the guests. The joy of togetherness is lost in the insistence of legality. True sense of love is lost when one picks and chooses whom to show his or her love. 

Paul redifines faith in Jesus' terms - it is to acknowledge that Christ has set us free! We are not under any yoke anymore. Nothing can bind us except the love of the Father made manifest in the Son and poured into our hearts through the Spirit. Why do we want to give into that yoke again by equating our faith to 'doing' something, 'performing rituals' instead of relating to God with a free heart. That freedom is born only out of love.

When a person does not possess that freedom, but has something inside and acts totally different for the sake of those who look on, he or she is wasting his or her life! There is a dichotomy in the person that ruins the very essence of that person's life. His or her life, thus lived, is not worth living at all. Dichotomìes and discrepancies between words and actions, between beliefs and life: they were immediate disqualifiers according to Jesus, in the pursuit of eternal life. 

Faith and love have to meet, they need to go together and where they meet Christ comes alive! If you and I wish to invite Christ into our lives, we need to prepare that space where our faith and love meet, without dichotomies or discrepancies! Where faith and love meet, Christ is!

சுதந்திரமும் கீழ்படிதலும்

அக்டோபர் 15, 2018: அவிலா தெரசம்மாள் - நினைவு 

கலா 4:22-24,26,27,31 - 5:1; லூக் 11: 29-32

தனி மனித சுதந்திரம் என்பது இறைவன் நமக்கு தரும் கொடைகளில் தனிச்சிறப்பு வாய்ந்ததாகும், ஏனெனில் இதுவே நம்மை மற்ற உயிரினங்களிடமிருந்து பிரித்து காட்டுகிறது. இதனாலேயே இது வெறும் கோடை மட்டுமல்ல, பெரும் பொறுப்பாகவும் விளங்குகிறது. நமது சொல் செயல் சிந்தனை அனைத்திற்கும் நாம் யார் மீதாவது பழிபோட நினைத்தாலும் இறுதியில் பொறுப்பு நாம் மட்டுமே! நமது நம்பிக்கை வாழ்விலும் அவ்வாறே நமது நல்வாழ்விற்கும் வரையறையற்ற வாழ்விற்கும் நாமே முழு பொறுப்பு ஏற்க வேண்டும்... சுதந்திரம், உரிமை என்றெல்லாம் இன்று பல வகைகளில் பிதற்றுபவர்கள், உண்மையிலே இந்த சுதந்திரத்தையும் உரிமையையும் புரிந்துகொண்டிருக்கிறார்களா என்பது ஐயமே! 

சுதந்திரத்தின் வசதிகள் வேண்டும் ஆனால் அதற்கு நாம் அளிக்க வேண்டிய விலையாம் நமது கடமையும் பொறுப்பும் வேண்டாம் என்று கூறுபவர்கள் தான் அதிகம்  காணப்படுகிறார்கள். நம்பிக்கை தரும் அருள் வேண்டும் ஆனால் அதற்காக நான் தர வேண்டிய கீழ்ப்படிதல் என்ற விலை எனக்கு வேண்டாம் என்று கூறும் மடமை இன்று அதிகரித்துக்கொண்டே போகிறது. 

இன்று நாம் கொண்டாடும் அவிலா தெரேசம்மாள் தன் காலத்திலே துறவற வாழ்வின் தன்மையை இறைவன் விரும்பிய நிலைக்கு மீண்டும் கொண்டுவர செய்த மாபெரும் செயல்கள் திருச்சபையின் வரலாற்றில் மறக்க முடியாதவை. அவரது செயல்களை எல்லாம் பெரும் செயல்களாய் மாற்றியது இறைவனின் பால் அவரது கீழ்ப்படிதலே... இது கட்டாயத்தின் பேரிலோ, வேறு வழியின்றியோ ஏற்பட்ட கீழ்படிதலென்றால் எந்த மாற்றத்தையும் உருவாக்கியிருக்காது. ஆனால் முழு சுதந்திரத்திலே பிள்ளைக்குரிய உரிமையில் பிறந்த கீழ்ப்படிதல் என்பதால் பல புதுமைகளை அது நிகழ்த்தியது!

நமது சுதந்திரத்தை உணர்வோம், நன்றி கூறுவோம், பிள்ளைகளுக்குரிய உரிமையோடு இறைவனுக்கு முற்றிலுமாய் கீழ்ப்படிய முன்வருவோம்!

Freedom is not free!

The Word and the Saint - October 15, 2018

Gal 4: 22-24,26,27,31 -5:1; Lk 11: 29-32

There is so much of craving for freedom in today's world but freedom understood in terms of doing what one likes. One is so attached to one's own wish and desire that it amounts actually to a slavery rather than freedom. The over dependence on the need of being affirmed and being recognised,  on the need to be respected and praised,  the need for the personal desires to be fulfilled make the generation today not only weak but also enslaved. 

Freedom, is not an all sweet gift. It was Jean Paul Sartre who made that provocative but profound statement, "we are condemned to be free". Freedom comes with the duty attached. We are free, free to choose and the responsibility of the choice is laid entirely upon us. It would be childish to clamour for freedom but shy away from responsibility. We are free children of God, declares Paul. With that comes the condition that we are to be held responsible for all the choices we make. Often speaking to the young, I raise a question: who decides I should be happy or not? And they, invariably all,refuse to answer, with a knotty smile on their faces! Yes, it is our choice, or rather our choices. The free choices we make amount to the consequence we face. 

St. Teresa has been a great inspiration down the centuries for many a girl or young woman, choosing God willingly and with all her heart! This choice made her different from the rest of the world. It is said she was a great reformer of Consecrated Life - in that time when the society hardly recognised women, there were no social networks like today and she was just a simple consecrated religious! She was able to achieve what she did, merely because of the absolute choice that she made for God and a life totally dedicated to God. That was her freedom at play! 

The Lord grants us the greatest gift of freedom, and leaves us with the responsibility for our choices. That is why, when we choose not to see the presence of God, when we choose not to find the moments of grace, when we choose not to realise the opportunities to do good, when we choose not to identify our brother or sister in the person next to us, we are choosing to rush towards a state that is so sad and so inhuman. We are free children of the promise (cf. Gal 4:22-24); yes we are given the great gift of freedom. But Freedom is not free; we have to pay for it with our personal responsibility!
