செவி கொடு... உணர்ந்திடு... புகழ்ந்திடு

அக்டோபர் 9, 2018: கலா 1:13-24; லூக் 10:38-42

இன்றைய இறைவார்த்தை இறைவனுக்கு செவிமடுக்கும் திறனை முன்னிறுத்துகிறது. சவுல் பவுலான கதை நமக்கு தெறியும், அதில் வெளிப்படும் பவுலடிகளாரின் முதன்மையான திறன், அவர் கடவுளின் குரலுக்கு செவிசாய்த்ததே ஆகும். அவருக்கே உரிய தற்புகழ்ச்சியோடும், இறுக்கமான சிந்தனைகளோடும் இருந்திருந்தால் அவர் இறைவனின் மாபெரும் அப்போஸ்தலராய் உருவாகியே இருக்கமுடியாது என்பது தான் எதார்த்தம். தான் அப்போஸ்தலனாய் உருவானதன் வரலாற்றை கூறும் அவரே அதில் பெரும் பங்கை தான் இறைவனுக்கு செவிகொடுக்க முன்வந்ததற்கே அளிப்பது இந்த ஆழமான உண்மையை நாம் உணர செய்கிறது. 

பெத்தானியாவை சார்ந்த மரியாவும் செவிகொடுப்பதில் நமக்கு மேலுமொரு முன்னோடியாய் தரப்படுகிறார். வாழ்வு தரும் வார்த்தைகள் உம்மிடமன்றோ உள்ளன என்று பேதுரு கூறியது போல, அந்த வாழ்வு தரும் வார்த்தைகளுக்கே முதல் இடம் கொடுத்து அனைத்தையும் விட்டுவிட தயாராய் இருக்கும் மரியா நாம் நமது உள்ளத்தில் முன்னெடுக்க வேண்டிய மாற்றத்தை நமக்கு குறித்து காட்டுகிறார். 

இவர்கள் அனைவருக்கும், உள்ள முன்னோடிகள் அனைவருக்கும் முத்தாய்ப்பாய் விளங்குபவர் அன்னை மரியாள். இவரை விட இறைவார்த்தைக்கு செவிமடுத்து அதன்படி வாழ முன்வந்தவர்கள் யாரும் இருக்க முடியாது. நிகழ்ந்தவை அனைத்தையும் தன் மனதில் நிறுத்தி தியானித்து வந்தாள், என்று நற்செய்தி நமக்கு குறித்துக்காட்டுகிறது. கடந்த ஞாயிறன்று இவ்வன்னையை செபமாலையின் அன்னை என நாம் நினைவு கூர்ந்தோம். செபமாலை என்பது இறைவனுக்கு செவிகொடுக்க மாபெரும் துணையாகும். கபிரியேல் தூதர் மரியன்னைக்கு இறைவார்த்தையை அறிவித்தது முதல் மரியன்னை விண்ணுக்கும் மண்ணுக்கும் அரசியாய் முடிசூட்டப்பட்டது வரை நாம் செபமாலையில் தியானிக்கும் நிகழ்வுகள் ஒவ்வொன்றும் இறைவனின் திட்டம் மனித வரலாற்றில் எவ்வாறு படிப்படியாய் வெளிப்பட்டது என்பதை நமக்கு எடுத்துக்கூறுகிறது. இந்நிகழ்வுகள் ஒவ்வொன்றிற்கும் விவிலியத்தில் சான்று தேட முடியாது எனினும், உள்ளத்தின் ஆழத்தில் இவற்றை தியானிக்கும் போது இறைவனின் மீட்பு திட்டம் தொடர்ந்து வெளிப்படுவதை நம்மால் உணரமுடிகிறது. 

நம் வாழ்வில் இன்றும் இறைவனின் திட்டம் தொடர்ந்து வெளிப்பட்டுக்கொண்டே இருக்கிறது. கிடைக்கும் வாய்ப்புக்களை எல்லாம் பயன்படுத்தி அமைதியில், உள்ளத்தின் ஆழத்தில், இறைவனுக்கு செவிகொடுக்க நாம் முன் வந்தால், இதை உணரமுடியும், இறைவனை புகழ தூண்டும். 

Listen and Give Glory!

Tuesday, 27th week in Ordinary time

October 9, 2018: Gal 1: 13-24; Lk 10: 38-42

The Readings today insist on our need to listen to God. The credit that has to be given to Saul, in his turning into Paul is fundamentally his readiness to listen to God. If he were as stubborn as he always were, he would not have heard the Lord's voice from his horse! He himself reiterates his capacity to listen to God, by narrating his initial journey in the Lord, preparing himself to be an apostle: that was to the major part, an attentive listening to the Lord and to all that the Lord wanted to reveal.  

Mary at Bethany, is yet another icon of listening to God. She knew where the life giving source was: "to whom shall we go Lord, while you have the words of eternal life" were the words of Peter to the Word made flesh. Today we are called to discover the life giving Spirit in the Word that comes across to us on a daily basis. 

Our Blessed mother is the epitome of silent listening, for she kept everything in her heart and pondered, says the Gospel. We are in the month of the holy rosary and we missed celebrating our Our Lady of Rosary, the Sunday that passed! The practice of the Holy Rosary, is a wonderful lesson that Mary teaches us, to listen to God. Yes in praying the rosary, we listen to God speaking, God speaking in and through the sacred mysteries that are contemplated. From annunciation to coronation, true that we cannot find proofs from the Bible for every one of them, but in silent contemplation, we will come to realise the Divine Plan of salvation unfolding slowly but steadily.

Even in our lives, there is this profound plan of God that is gradually unfolding... If only we listen we shall become aware of it, and give glory to God for it!

நற்செய்தியின் உண்மை சாரம்

ஒரு முறை கத்தோலிக்கர்களும் கத்தோலிக்கரல்லாதவர்களும் சரிசமமாய் இருந்த ஒரு குழுவிடம் உரையாற்ற நேர்ந்தது... முதலில் தொடங்கிய நான் இந்த கலப்பை எண்ணி சற்று எச்சரிக்கையோடு பேசத்தொடங்கினேன். ஒரு சில நிமிடங்கள் சென்றதும் என் மனத்திற்குள்ளாக இந்த தயக்கத்தை சரிசெய்துகொண்டு, நான் எப்போதும் பேசுவதை போல் மனம்விட்டு பேச ஆரம்பித்தேன். அந்த உரையின் முடிவில் கத்தோலிக்கரல்லாதவர்கள் பலரும் என்னிடம் தனிப்பட்ட முறையில் வந்து நான் பகிர்ந்து கொண்ட கருத்துக்களுக்காக நன்றி கூறி சென்றனர். யாரிடம் பேசினால் என்ன, நற்செய்தியை சரியாக முறையாக பற்றிக்கொண்டால் போதும் என்ற உண்மையை மீண்டும் ஒருமுறையாக நான் உணர்ந்த தருணம் அது!

நற்செய்தியின் உண்மை சாரம் அன்பே! கடவுள் நம்மை அன்பு செய்கிறார், நாம் அன்பு செய்தோமாகில் அவருக்கு சொந்தமானவர்கள் ஆகிறோம். இதை தவிர மற்றனைத்தும் நற்செய்தியை திரிப்பதாகவே அமைகிறது - பிரிவினை, பகை, தன்னலம், ஏமாற்று, அடுத்தவரை பயன்படுத்துதல், அடுத்தவர் பெயரை கெடுத்தல், தீர்ப்பிடுதல், ஏற்றத்தாழ்வு போற்றுதல்... என இவை அனைத்துமே நற்செய்திக்கு எதிரானவை தானே! 

சில நேரங்களில் துன்பம், சிலுவை, தியாகம் என இவை தான் நற்செய்தியின் பேருண்மைகளாக நமக்கு தோன்றலாம், ஆனால் உண்மை அதுவல்ல... இவற்றிற்கும் பொருள் தரக்கூடியதாய் அன்பேயுள்ளது என்பதை நாம் அறிய வேண்டும்.  துன்பமே வாழ்க்கை, என்பது நேர்மறையான சிந்தனையே அல்ல. ஆனால் அன்பிற்காக துன்பம் ஏற்றல் என்பது ஆழ்ந்த பொருள் தருகிறது. சிலுவையும் கூட அன்பின் பார்வையில் காணப்படாவிட்டால், அது வெறும் தோல்வியின், அவமானத்தின் சின்னமே; ஆனால் அன்பு அந்த சிலுவையை வெற்றியின் சின்னமாக்குகிறது. தியாகமும் கூட அன்பு இல்லையேல் வெறும் தற்புகழ்ச்சியாக, என்னையே நான் முன்னிறுத்துவதற்கான கருவியாக மாறிவிடும். இதுவே கிறிஸ்தவ வாழ்வின் பாடங்களாகும் - இதைக்காட்டிலும் வேறு நற்செய்தி என்று ஒன்றில்லை என்கிறார் பவுலடிகளார். 

தேவையில் இருக்கும், துன்பப்படும், யாருமின்றி நிற்கும் ஒவ்வொருவரும் என் அயலானாகிறார்; சகோதரராகின்றார். அடுத்தவரின் தேவையும், துன்பமும் அறிந்து கரம் நீட்டும் மனம் என்னில் உள்ளதா? அல்லது யார், எவர், ஏன், எனக்கென்ன பயன் என்ற எண்ணங்களே என்னில் மேலோங்கி நிற்கின்றனவா? நற்செய்தியின் உண்மை சாரம் உணர்வோம், அன்பை கொண்டாடுவோம், அன்பில் ஒன்றாகுவோம்!

October 8, 2018: Gal 1: 6-12; Lk 10: 25-31

I remember once when I had an opportunity to speak to a group which had equal number of Catholics and Non Catholics making up its total.  At the beginning I was a bit conscious of that fact but within a few minutes I resolved the issue within me and stuck to my spontaneity and finally there were so many of those Non Catholic friends who came up to express their gratitude for the insights shared. It was an experience that taught me recently that getting our Gospel right is what truly matters, after all.

The true Gospel of Christ is love: that God loves us and that we belong to God when we love each other. Anything other than this is a deviation... division, hatred, selfishness, exploitation, cheating, manipulation, party politics, false propaganda, character assassinations, judgments, prejudices, categorising persons, branding people...anything that is against love, is against the Gospel of Christ. 

At times suffering, cross and sacrifice are presented as typical traits of Christ's gospel. They could be, provided they are taken within the framework of love. It is not suffering in itself: it would become sadistic! It is not cross in isolation:it would still remain a symbol of shame! It is not sacrifice for its own sake: it would lead to unnecessary ego trips! Suffering out of love one has for the other, Cross as an expression of God's love, Sacrifice as a language of genuine love - those are CHRISTian and those are gospels (good news!).

There is no other Gospel than this, says St. Paul today! Anything that teaches anything contrary would be unchristian. Anyone who needs me, becomes my neighbour. Irrespective of whether I need him (or her) or not, I am expected to play the neighbour. Am I really ready to reach out to the other without considerations of whether or not I know him, or whether or not I like her, or whether or not the other has done anything good to me in the past?

The challenge, call and the Mission today

7th October, 2018: 27th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Gen 2: 18-24; Heb 2: 9-11; Mk 10: 2-16

FAMILY is the basic unit of a holistic humanity, not the individual. Where this fact is gainsaid, we see the genesis of every problem the world is infested with today. The Word today invites us to dwell on this theme of Family. This Sunday was chosen in 2015 to begin the 14th Ordinary Synod of Bishops, which reflected on the theme: The Vocation and Mission of the Family in the Church and the Contemporary World. 

Listening to Challenges: In a world that is filled with individualism, materialism and consumerism, the family has become an entity that is seen as an hindrance, a block, a burden that slows down one's personal progress towards self fulfillment. In the Gospel, Jesus underlines the problems of infidelity and unchastity around the reality of marriage. With the increasing numbers of divorce, reducing numbers of marriages, growing justification of co-habitation, newer claims to the nature of marriage, we are called to listen to the times and understand the challenges involved in building a family today. As a true disciple of Christ, what do you think of Marriage? How do you look at your Family? Listen to yourself... listen to yourself against the background of the Word of God, not just going with the trends of the world. It is important to listen to yourself, because from your thoughts are born your choices!

Discerning Vocations: The First reading highlights an indelible nature of marriage and family. Being a Family or a Marriage is a vocation. It is not a phenomenon that happens by default. It has to be a conscious choice, well discerned and taken up with absolute commitment. Discerning Vocations here would mean the need for persons to make a choice and the role of the community in helping a person make that choice with ease and seriousness. It would mean also the need of the pastors and those who play that role in some manner or degree, to accompany individuals within this context. Right now there is a Synod going on too: Youth, Faith and Vocational Discernment. It is important that the young are led to think, reflect, listen to God speaking in and through them, discern the right modes of living with conviction and joy! 

Exploring the Mission of the Family Today: In the second reading we see that the Word reminds us of the most fundamental function of a family: it makes us brothers and sisters in the Lord. Though every person is an individual, each with his or her interests and motives, dreams and vision, desires and ambitions, we are never islands. We are called to live in a family, to begin with and that family is required to become the basic building block of a humanity that is loving, respectful and caring towards everyone else around us.Today a Christian family specially has an enormous responsibility, a mission to accomplish - Evangelisation. To evangelise is to share the love of God to the world today. A family is a lived experience of God's love on a daily basis - to share that love with everyone around and with the world at large is simply what Evangelisation means today. Specially against the background of war and injustice, exploitation and domination, violence and crime, terrorism and fanaticism, the Christian families have to become beacons that bear out true love and compassion reminding the world of the Lord who is ever present in our midst and the Lord who is madly in love with you and me.

We are created as families, to live in families and to call this entire humanity to become one great, big, loving family of the children of God. Shall we begin it at home and begin it today?

Lord that I may see!

Saturday, 26th week in Ordinary time

October 6, 2018: Job 42:1-3,5-6,12-17; Lk 10:17-24

Job lived on to see his children and the children of his children, upto the fourth generation, says the first reading. Happy the eyes that see what you see, exclaims Jesus in the Gospel to the disciples, indicating to them how blessed they were! The message of the Word today is: what we see is not merely what we see, but what we are given to see!

As Job observes so clearly what he came to see (now that I have seen you with my own eyes), we are given to see certain things in life which we would never see otherwise. It is a gift we need to ask from the Lord to see - to see what we need to see, to see what would give us the true repentance of heart, to see that which will offer us the fullness of the sense of our life, to see that which will clarify to us the true vocation we have from God.

Jesus explains it further. Not every one can see, but those who are destined to see, those to whom God reveals it - the children, the humble, the obedient, the gentle, the true children of God - only they would be able to see what they have to see. Not that it is not there, but the aggressive, the haughty and the self-centered will never get to see it.

At times I wish the people who think of themselves too high, who look down on others, who think they can manipulate everything for their good, who take people for granted and oppress others without conscience, get to see truly what reality is and what their destiny would be! However, it doesn't depend on our wish, but God's will to reveal.

The call for us is, to be attentive to what God wants us to see, to see what God reveals to us and to be able to see what would give us the right sense of our life, here and now. Let our prayer today be, 'Lord, that I may see!'

நான் காணும்படி செய்யும்!

அக்டோபர் 6, 2018: யோபு 42: 1-3,5-6,12-17; லூக் 10:17-24

யோபு தன் பிள்ளைகளையும் பிள்ளைகளின் பிள்ளைகளையும் நான்காம் தலைமுறைவரை கண்டார் என்று முதல் வாசகம் நமக்கு தெரிவிக்கிறது. நீங்கள் காண்பவற்றை காண்பவர்கள் பேறுபெற்றோர் என்று கிறிஸ்து தன் சீடர்கள் எவ்வளவு பேறுபெற்றவர்கள் என்பதை நற்செய்தியில்  தெளிவுபடுத்துகிறார். இன்றைய வார்த்தை நமக்கு தரும் பாடம் இதுவே: நாம் காண்பவை நாம் காண்பவை மட்டுமல்ல, நாம் காண நமக்கு கொடுக்கப்பட்டவை என்பதை நாம் உணரவேண்டும் என்பதே. 

நான் உம்மை கண்கூடாக காண்கின்றேன் என்று யோபு கூறும்போது, அதுவரை அவர் காண தவறியதை இறைவன் அவருக்கு வெளிப்படுத்தியதை நம்மோடு பகிர்ந்துகொள்கின்றார்.  நாம் இறைவனிடம் கேட்கக்கூடிய வரம் இதுவே, நாம் காணாமலே விட்டுவிடும் பலவற்றை காணும் பேற்றை இறைவன் தரவேண்டும் என்று கேட்போம் - அவர் நாம் காணவேண்டும் என்று விரும்புவதை, நம் வாழ்க்கையை முற்றிலுமாய் மாற்றியமைக்க கூடியவற்றை, நம் வாழ்க்கையின் உண்மை பொருளை முழுமையாய் நாம் உணரசெய்வனவற்றை நாம் காண நமக்கு வரம் தர வேண்டுவோம். 

பல வேளைகளில் நான் நினைத்தது உண்டு. மற்றவரை துன்புறுத்தும் மரத்துப்போன இதயம் உள்ளவர்கள், தான் என்ற அகந்தையோடு அடுத்தவரை அலட்சியப்படுத்துபவர்கள், தன்னல போக்கோடு யாரையும் பற்றி கவலைப்படாமல் தான் மட்டுமே வாழ சிந்திப்பவர்கள், தன் வசதிக்காகவும் வாய்ப்பிற்காகவும் யாருக்கும் எதுவும் செய்ய துணிபவர்கள் என்று இதுபோன்ற மனிதர்கள் உண்மையில் தாங்கள் யார், தங்களுக்கு என்ன நேரப்போகிறது, தாங்கள் எப்படிப்பட்டவர்கள் என்பதை கண்ணெதிரே கண்டால் எப்படியிருக்கும் என்று. ஆனால் அதை வெளிப்படுத்துவது இறைவன் அல்லவா, நாம் சிந்தித்து என்ன பயன்!

ஆம் அனைவரும் அனைத்தையும் காண்பது கிடையாது. இறைவன் யார் எதை காணவேண்டும் என்று சித்தமாயிருக்கிறாரோ அவர்களே காண முடிகிறது. குழந்தைகளுக்கும், எளியோருக்கும், தாழ்சியுள்ளோருக்கும், கீழ்படிவோருக்கும், கனிவுள்ளோருக்கும், உண்மையுள்ளோருக்கும் மட்டுமே கடவுள் தன்னையே வெளிப்படுத்துகிறார்; காணச்செய்கிறார். இன்று நமது செபமும் இப்படியே அமையட்டும்: இறைவா, நீர் விரும்புவதை, நீர் திட்டமிட்டுள்ளதை, உம்பால் என்னை ஈர்க்கக்கூடியதை, என் வாழ்விற்கு பொருள் தரக்கூடியதை, நீர் தரும் அமைதியையும் உளநிறைவையும் தரக்கூடியதை நான் காணும்படி செய்யும்! ஆமென்.

Grasping the sense of God's plan

Friday, 26th week in Ordinary time

5th October, 2018: Job 38: 1, 12-21, 40: 3-5; Lk 10: 13-16

'From Knowledge to Ignorance' is one of the famous titles from one of the Spiritual gurus of India. It may sound a bit odd but there is deep truth in the perspective and that is the message of the readings today. We run the risk of getting too used to the great things that God keeps doing for us. At times, due to some setbacks that we could possibly experience, or due to some troublesome moments, we tend to forget all that has gone by so well.

I have indeed noticed in day to day relationships too: when there is a misunderstanding or a trouble to be faced, the individuals involved are so oblivious of the great moments that they have shared together. The present trouble becomes so occupying that the words that they use, the sentiments they reveal and the decisions that they make are so conditioned by that passing trouble, however trying it could be at the moment. There is a bigger picture to everything that happens and that is, God's eternal plan!

In the first reading, God challenges the attitude of questioning the eternal designs of God. We lack the Wisdom to understand the plans of God in all its details but with the little that we are capable of, we pretend to be masters of everything! It is important that we realise our limitedness inspite of our great acomplishments, that we acknowledge the wisdom in God's plan inspite of our nothingness. 

If our eyes are truly open to what is happening around, if our ears  are genuinely open to the Words that come from above, if our hearts are absolutely open to the promptings of the Spirit of the Lord, then we would open our lives to the Lord and we would grasp the profound sense of the eternal plan of God.

இறைசித்தத்திற்கு சரணாவோம்; புதுமைகள் காண்போம்!

அக்டோபர் 5, 2018 - யோபு 38: 1, 12-21, 40; லூக் 10: 13-16

கடவுள் நமக்காக செய்யும் அரும்பெரும் செயல்களை நாம் பொதுவாக காண்பதே இல்லை, கண்டாலும் அதன் அருமையை நாம் உணர்வதே இல்லை. பெரிய நிகழ்வுகள், உயிர் காக்கும் அனுபவங்கள், வாழ்க்கையை புரட்டி போட்ட நிகழ்வுகள் என்று சிலவற்றை மட்டுமே நாம் நினைவில் வைத்துக் கொள்ள முன் வருகிறோமே தவிர அன்றாடம் நடக்கும் புதுமைகள், அன்றாடம் நமக்கு கிடைக்கும் பல கொடைகள், சத்தமின்றி நிகழும் சாதாரண அனுபவங்களிலெல்லாம் இறைவன் நம்மை எப்படியெல்லாம் வழி நடத்துகிறார் என்பதை நாம் காண தவறிவிடுகிறோம். இதனால் தான் ஒரு பிரச்சனையோ துன்பமோ வரும் போது அதுவரை நாம் அனுபவித்த எந்த ஆசீரையும் மனத்திற்கொள்ளாமல் புலம்ப தொடங்கிவிடுகிறோம். 

மனிதர்களுக்கு இடையேயான அன்றாட உறவுகளிலும் இந்த அனுபவத்தை நான் கண்டதுண்டு... ஒரு மனத்தாங்களோ புரிதலின்மையோ வந்துவிட்டால் தொடக்க காலத்திலிருந்தே எதிரிகளை போல சண்டையிட்டுக்கொள்ளும் இருவர், தாங்கள் பகிர்ந்துகொண்ட அழகான தருணங்களை நினைத்து பார்ப்பதே இல்லை. அதை நினைத்துக்கொண்டாலே  பாதிக்கும் மேலான பிரச்சனைகள் தீர்ந்துவிடும் என்பதே உண்மை. 

இறைவனோடு நமது உறவிலும் அவ்வாறே, நாம் ஒரு சோதனைக்குரிய தருணத்தை தாண்டி செல்லும் போது, வலுவிழக்கச்செய்யும் நேரத்தை கடந்துசெல்லும்போது, நமது வாழ்வின் அருமையான நேரங்களை, இறைவனோடு நாம் அனுபவித்த அற்புதங்களை நினைத்துக்கொண்டோமேயானால், அந்த நேரத்திற்கான ஒளி பிறக்கும். குறுகிய கண்ணோக்கோடு, புரிதலற்ற மனதோடு இறைவனை குறை சொல்வதும், அவரது சித்தத்தை எதிர்த்து சிந்திப்பதும், நமது அறிவீனத்தையே காட்டுகிறது என்று யோபு தனது அனுபவத்திலிருந்து நம்மை உணரச்செய்கிறார்.

இறைவன் நமக்கு செய்த நன்மைகள், அவர் நமக்கு காட்டிய வழிகள், நமது நலனுக்காக அவர் செய்த பெரும் செயல்கள், நாம் அவரிடமிருந்து பெற்றுக்கொண்ட ஆசீர்வாதங்கள் என இவற்றையெல்லாம் நாம் மனதிற்கொண்டு வாழும் போது நமது வாழ்வு இறைசித்தம் என்னும் பரந்த எல்லைக்குள் தெளிவு பெறுகிறது. இல்லையேல் நான், எனது எண்ணம், எனது திட்டங்கள் என்ற குறுகிய வட்டத்திற்குள் சிக்கி திணறுகிறது.

Celebrating the Apostle of Peace, St. Francis of Assisi

October 4, 2018: Job 19: 21-27; Lk 10: 1-12

Francis of Assisi is considered a man who managed the maximum resemblance to Christ in his life, not so much due to the marks of the stigmata that he received from the Lord, but more due to the gift of Christ that he offered the world all his life - that is Peace. When you enter a house, greet them: Peace be with you, instructs Jesus in the Gospel today. 

Especially today, with the rising fanaticism around the world, we are called to be truly instruments of peace that comes from the self emptying Christ. Don't think I am referring only to the fanatic terrorists who are threatening the peace of the world, those who are threatening to destroy the Church from outside but more to the fanatics in the garb of Christians, people who are insisting on rules and rubrics, legalities and orthodoxy, the ego and hierarchy, to such an extent that mercy and understanding, dialogue and compassion find no place within the practice of faith and religion. People are thrown into confusion and frustration more by these than by those from outside!  

Francis came at a time when the  Church was wounded due to various spiritual calamities within the Church in the 10th and the 11th century and he treated those wounds with the compassion of the Lord, the humility of the Son of God and the peace of the Prince of Peace. He showed us that the marks of Christ that all of us can bear in our life, are exactly these: to be instruments of peace, through love, pardon, faith, hope, light, joy, consolation and new life. Today, as Pope Francis says, the Church is somewhat in a similar situation beaten and bruised from within and from without, however the accuser, the avenger is ruthlessly rampant against the Church.

May St. Francis assist us to understand the difference between true holiness and self righteousness, the distance between love and legalism and the need to move from being Christians to becoming Christ ourselves! Let us be true instruments of Peace, the true gift of Christ.
